High Notes, Vol 27 No 20, July 03 2026From the PrincipalCareers ExpoThank you to Careers Prefect, Ryan Allen, and Careers Adviser, Mr Cotton, for working with the OBU to facilitate this wonderful event on Friday June 26. With over 1000 attendees I am sure it will be repeated for years to come. Why Exercise Matters – Especially During the HolidaysRegular exercise is important for all students. It supports learning, wellbeing, and personal growth. It is not just about fitness. It directly impacts how students think, feel, and perform at school. Exercise improves cognitive function. Memory, attention, and problem solving all benefit. These are the core skills students rely on every day. Physical activity also supports the development of new neural pathways, strengthening learning and recall. Students who are active are better prepared to meet academic demands. Exercise also plays a critical role in mental health. Adolescence brings pressure. Stress, anxiety, and low mood are common. Regular physical activity helps manage these. It improves mood, reduces stress, and builds self-esteem. Students who feel better are more engaged in their learning. There are also simple physical benefits that matter. Exercise helps regulate sleep. It gives students an outlet for energy. This leads to better focus and consistency in their work. Just as important as exercise itself is routine. During the school term, students benefit from structure. They know when they train, when they study, and when they rest. That routine supports both their academic and personal habits. The holidays present a risk. Without structure, routines can quickly fall away. Sleep patterns shift. Activity drops. Motivation declines. Once routine is lost, it is hard to regain. The start of term becomes harder. Students often struggle to reset. Maintaining exercise during the holidays helps protect routine. It does not need to be complex. Regular activity and consistent habits. This keeps the body active and the mind disciplined. Exercise also reinforces key life skills as it builds discipline. It teaches students to show up, even when it is difficult. These habits transfer directly to school and beyond. Students who maintain routine over the holidays return ready and they re-engage with the schoolwork faster.
Exercise is not optional. It is a foundation. During the holidays, it becomes even more
important. |
