Science at Sydney Boys High School develops students’ curiosity about the world and equips them with the knowledge, skills and scientific thinking needed to understand and shape the future.

Our programs encourage students to ask questions, investigate evidence, solve problems and communicate scientific ideas with clarity and precision. Through a combination of explicit teaching, practical investigations and experimentation, students develop a strong understanding of the scientific principles that underpin the world around them.

Our goal is to develop scientifically literate young men who are not only knowledgeable in science, but who can think scientifically, evaluate evidence critically and use science to understand and contribute to an increasingly complex world.

Topics:
Year 7
- Science topics are Working Scientifically, Observing the Universe, Solutions and Mixtures, Cells and Classification and Forces and Fields.

Year 8 - Topics include Living Systems (including a Depth Study assessment), Periodic Table and Atomic Structure, Change (including Chemical, Energy and Geological changes).

Year 9 - Students study Disease (including a Depth Study assessment), Energy, Materials and Sustainability.

Year 10 - The course covers Genetics, Motion (including SUVAT equations) and Waves, Chemical Reactions and Reaction Rates (including Mole theory), Evolution and Biotechnology as well as discussing Pseudoscience.

Year 11 & 12 - 2 Unit Biology, 2 Unit Chemistry, 2 Unit Physics.

Resources:

  • 8 wet/chemical labs – fitted to ensure students are able to collect reliable and accurate first-hand data to support their understanding of theoretical concepts.
  • 3D-Printed Science Apparatus – A growing collection of custom-designed apparatus that can be produced using a 3D printer, providing students with intuitive, hands-on ways to explore scientific concepts.
  • Biological specimens, preserved microscope slides, light microscopes
  • Electronic, online and interactive textbook systems.
  • Science Workbooks – Structured resources supporting learning across Years 7–12.
  • Practical Investigation Resources – Guides, templates and resources to support scientific investigations, experimental design and data analysis.
  • Revision and Study Resources – Revision materials, practice questions, worked examples and exam preparation resources.

Additional special opportunities include

  • Excursions: Year 7 (Taronga Zoo), Year 8 (Australian Museum and the Botanical Gardens), Year 9 (Long Reef) and Year 10 (Luna Park).
  • Competitions: Junior and Senior Science Olympiads, University Run Science and Engineering Challenges.
