High Talent
Oliver Kirk has been invited to participate in the AMOC NSW Extension
Program, conducted at the University of Sydney for talented Year 7 students in mathematics. Well
done, Oliver! To the students who waited to catch a bus on Cleveland St and who stepped back to
allow a member of the public to get on a crowded bus, while they had to wait longer, well done!
The gentleman was very impressed and rang the school specifically to praise all the boys at the
stop for their demeanour and generosity. To the Music Staff, music students and Mr Hannon and his
multimedia team, thank you for coordinating such a complex and interesting music in films
multimedia concert on Saturday last. The spectacular finale had four conductors (including Thomas
Wilson) synchronising their ensembles with the action on the three screens. Congratulations to
the first grade basketball team for its historic win against Sydney Grammar last weekend. The
first quarter defence was awesome and the outside shooting all game was really first class! Brian
Lau (Year 11) has been nominated for Encore for composition. Well done Brian. Congratulations
also to Zhi Zu (Year 12) for his selection to play in Encore, a concert of outstanding
performances and compositions from Higher School Certificate Music students.
Explaining Absences
As I read through student reports I find a disturbing number of
unexplained absences. Students do not seem to appreciate clearly that when they are away from
school for any reason, that absence must be explained. There are various ways that this
explanation can be communicated: handwritten note, email, phone call, text message or fax. Doing
nothing is not an option. I am writing negatively on reports where I see half a dozen unexplained
absences or more. Please comply with school policy and either call the school before the absence
or explain it ex post facto by email, letter or otherwise.
Electrical Substation Progress
Since 2004 we have been trying to secure an upgrade
of our power supply. There was a productive visit this week in respect of the proposed electrical
substation to be built on our Cleveland Street frontage. The Project Manager and Electrical
Engineer were here to source a suitable site for the projected substation. It will bring high
voltage power directly onsite from the other side of Cleveland Street. There are steps to be
taken before design drawings are finalised and budgets are decided. Energy Australia and the
Department of Commerce will establish a timeline for the project. I am assured it will be done in
calendar year 2009. If so, the customary 6 year wait for such projects will have run its course.
Much delayed projects like air conditioning the Junior Library will become possible once adequate
power supply is assured.
Collection of Reports
Students in Years 7 and 10 should be completing their
Clearance Forms and putting their names down on the appointment sheets outside the
Principal’s Office to discuss their academic progress for the year. It is each boy’s
responsibility to manage the signing off of the Form. There are still a few parents out there
wondering why no Year 11 report has come home. Ask your sons!

Year 7 Immunisation Program 2008
The second Vaccination Clinic for Year 7 students will take place on
Tuesday 16 December
when a team of specially trained registered nurses will be visiting the school.
On this day the following vaccines will be offered to Year 7 students only -
- Hepatitis B – the second of two doses for those students who received the first dose on
11 June this year.
- Varicella [chickenpox] for any Year 7 student who was absent during the first vaccination
clinic on 11 June this year.
If you would like your son to be vaccinated, please complete the Consent Forms which will
be distributed to the boys in Week 9 and return completed forms to the collection box in the Main
Office. Alternatively, boys can bring the forms with them on Tuesday 16th. Boys who do not
bring the completed consent forms will not be able to take advantage of this free service.
What to do if your son missed the first dose of Hepatitis vaccine at school: Any Year 7
student who missed the first dose of Hepatitis vaccine at school can attend his GP to receive a
free three-dose course of paediatric Hepatitis B vaccine over a six-month period.
What to do if your son misses the second dose of Hepatitis vaccine at school: Any Year 7
student who misses their second dose at school should attend his GP to complete the course with a
further two doses of free paediatric Hepatitis B Vaccine [each dose given five months apart].

After the boys have been vaccinated they will be given a Record of Vaccination to take home so
that you can keep their immunisation records up to date.

Music Notes
HSC Encore Nomination
Congratulations to Matthew Tong, Brian Lau and Plini
Roessler-Holgate who received an HSC Music Encore nomination for outstanding composition in Music
2 and Music 1 respectively. A wonderful achievement from both boys. Well done!
Tapas and Jazz Concert
Our Annual Jazz in the Courtyard concert held on Sunday 16
November featured two eminent Jazz musicians; Judy Bailey and Dave Panichi who workshopped and
directed the Stage Bands. The Jazz ensemble members were involved in an all day workshop on the
Friday before the concert which showcased our Junior Stage Band, Senior Stage Band, Junior Jazz
Ensemble and Senior Jazz Ensemble with guest James Mackay (OB 2007) and Mike Gubb.
Music Awards Assembly
Our Third Annual Music Assembly was held on Monday 17 November
acknowledging the wonderful accomplishments of our talented music students, from ANZAC Day
Marching Band and Performance Program musicians to Encore nominees. Congratulations especially to
our Music Prefects for 2009: Alexander Belokopytov, Christian Katsikaros, Brian Lau, Daniel Lo,
Johan Santoso, Matthew Tong and Thomas Wilson and our musician of the year; Thomas Wilson. Well
done to all our musicians for their outstanding achievements throughout the year.
125th Anniversary Cabaret
The Senior String Ensemble rehearsed and performed in
collaboration with SGHS Orchestra at the 125th Anniversary Cabaret on Friday 21 November at the
Randwick Racecourse. This delightful evening showcased our talented musicians, thank you and well
done on all your efforts!
Spring Music Festival - A Night at the Movies
A Night at the Movies was a huge success with over 300 people in attendance and drinks and
popcorn sold on the night to highlight the theme of the concert.
Many thanks to all those who helped out especially to Tony Hannon, Wen Jia Liu and Brendan Leo
for all the visuals, Anirban Ghose for the lighting and stage set up, the wonderfully fabulous
MCs for the evening; Jason Nguyen and Arun Krishnan, the Music Support Group, all the families
who came along to support the boys and of course the musicians who played with such energy and
style.
The evening kicked off with a grand rendition of the 20th Century Fox opening followed by the
Senior Concert Band performing music to Fantasia and Mission Impossible.
An impressive boxing dual by Max Jones and Harry Heo introduced the Guitar Ensemble playing the
theme to Rocky followed by The Simpsons.
The Junior Percussion Ensemble added a lovely touch with their matching T-shirts of the
‘Evolution of the Drummer’ and performed to The Lion King followed by the
Training Strings and Concert Band playing the theme to Star Wars and well known hit
'I’m a Believer' from Shrek.
The Senior Strings dazzled the audience with their sweet and lyrical performance followed by the
Symphony Orchestra concluding the first half of the evening with Bugs Bunny’s Barber of
Seville and The Ant Bully.
Intermediate Concert Band opened the second half with their exciting performance of Pirates of
the Caribbean followed by the groovy Senior Percussion Ensemble and Philharmonic Orchestra
playing to Superfly and Lord of the Rings respectively.
The Chamber Choir sung 'In Dreams' from Lord of the Rings before bringing down the house
with Queen’s medley where the sopranos high Bb in 'Bohemian Rhapsody' wowed the audience.
Senior Stage band stunningly performed the theme to Shaft followed by the Senior Concert
Band making another appearance performing Raiders of the Lost Ark. The magnificent finale
was a culmination of all the ensembles featuring the year 7 cohort performing 'All Star' from
Shrek which concluded the fun-filled evening.
Congratulations to the following families on winning the movie prizes at the concert: Fletcher,
Costa and Chiam family.
High Tide
Sydney Boys High School Sailing
Sydney Boys High Sailing squad have, for the second year running, been invited to assist the
Woollahra Sailing club in hosing the International Sailing Regatta. A number of our students will
get the chance to meet and assist Olympic sailors from all over the world. The International
Regatta will run from the 6-9th December 2008.
Sailing Rule of the Week: Rule 14
A boat shall avoid contact with another boat if
reasonably possible. However, a right-of -way boat or one entitled to room
(a) need not act to avoid contact until it is clear that the other boat is not keeping clear or
giving room.
(b) shall not be penalized under this rule unless there is contact that causes damage or injury.

The annual Art Exhibition is run in conjunction with the P&C. Food and drinks are provided.
All Art, Music, Design and Film students are especially invited. Without their fantastic work
there would be no show.
Art students are invited to offer their work for sale as an opportunity to experience the artist
and agent world. They will need to organise this with their art teacher.
The Art teachers really hope to see our students and families on the night be it for a brief or
longer visit.

Sydney Boys High Cricket
It has been a busy 2 weeks with the completion of the GPS competitions and the lead up to the
Brisbane Tour, the Barberis Cup Challenge, and the departure of our 1st XI for the 5 Highs
Carnival, and now we plan for the matches against Mount Albert (NZ) and the Cheltenham College
(UK) Tours next week.
Full Match Reports will be posted on the Cricket Website this weekend (6 and 7 Dec) the delay due
to the many changes in teams and acting captains. Please take the time to check the reports as
they give you the players’ perspective of their matches.
Some items we need your assistance with:
RETURN OF TEAM CRICKET KITS
The kits from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th XIs are OVERDUE for
return Plus Team Kits from the 16A, 16B, 15A, 15C, 14A and 14C Teams. Please ensure that these
kits are delivered to school during school hours or left in the Gymnasium foyer for pick-up the
next morning. Remember to include the used match balls, boundary markers and all batting gloves.
SUPER EIGHTS ROUND ROBIN COMPETITION – Wednesday 10 DEC
This is a great
cricketing day when everyone gets to participate in the match where teams of eight (8) players
all bowl one over, as the other tries to frantically score runs and then the positions are
reversed. Each Match lasts approx 1 hour and 15 minutes
And you proceed to the next ground and opponent. A barbecue supported by drinks will operate on
the day as a section fund-raiser. or team nominations and full details check the Cricket Website
after 7-0pm Sat 6th Dec.
MOUNT ALBERT BOYS H.S (NZ) – U.15 and U. 14 Tour MATCHES - FRIDAY 12 DEC
Two
representative teams will be selected to compete against the visitors and posted on the Cricket
Website on Friday evening 5 Dec after 8-30 pm. Confirmation of your availability will be required
by email returns. Players selected will be entitled to purchase 2008 Representative Shirts. All
additional Information will be via the Website and Daily News Sheet.
CHELTENHAM COLLEGE (UK) – TOUR MATCH Thursday 18 DEC
A combined Senior XI will
be selected to play in this fixture against a regular visiting College team who always like to
have Sydney Boys High on their itinerary. The senior coaches will make these final selections for
this match and the teams will be announced on Monday 15 Dec and appear on the Cricket Website.
3rd XI CHALLENGE ISSUED TO THE 2nd XI
Officially at sport on Wednesday 3 DEC the 3rd
XI put a challenge in front of the 2nd XI captain for a “winner takes all” (including
their spots in the 2nd XI!!!). The challenge has not yet been taken up by the 2nds. Watch the

Due to rain during the week the match was played on a synthetic wicket in place of the previous
week’s turf wicket with King’s making the decision to play a 20/20 match. High batted
first due to the non arrival of the coach and several players and with the help of two Year 8
cricketers, finally fielded 10 players. We got off to a poor start due to the assistance of the
officiating umpire with a pair of LBWs and from there the score gradually improved by a series of
partnerships with Henry SIT 78n.o.(60 balls), Shuman HOQUE 23 (16) and Shimon DANZIGER 14 (8) the
main run scorers.
16B SHORE 8/103 (17) -defeated- HIGH 8/54 (19)
Short of players Shore offered 2 substitutes to give us 8 in the field and then proceeded to take
advantage of our shortage of fielders. However we regularly got wickets and they finished with
103 from 17 overs. We then batted with Vivian LE batting twice for (6) and (12), Lee MING also
batted twice for (4) and (4n.o.) as we scratched together a total of 54 runs off our 25 overs
15A, 15B and 15C

14A 1st INNINGS LOSS on DAY 1. KINGS 3-120 (16) -defeated- HIGH 5-111 (25)
After a loss on Day 1 of this fixture, a shortened Day 1 match was played on Day 2 due to wet
weather and pitch condition. High got off to a good start against the opening bowlers but with
the introduction of spin saw the run rate slow due to consistent bowling by King’s. Run
scorers were Owen DUFFY (50 ret.), Alexander HUGHES (32) and Lahiru KATUPITIYA (8). Our wkt
takers were Lahiru KATUPITIYA !/15. Ahdil ANSAREEN 1/6 and Dhruv GUPTAA 1/22.
14B ANOTHER VICTORY HIGH 6/154 -defeated- GRAMMAR 10/102
Grammar won the toss and batted first and with High bowling tightly backed up by great fielding
including 2 great run-outs saw them struggle to be all out for 102. Wicket takers were Agnish
NAYAK 3/19 (5), Thilan SUBASINGHE 2/15(5) and Anirudh RAMESH 1/20(5). High then batted and
produced our highest team score for the Term with Anirudh RAMESH (42), Michael LIU (28) and
Thilan SUBASINGHE (19) the main run scorers.
14C CLOSE AGAIN, BUT? GRAMMAR 10-115 -defeated HIGH 10-103
Grammar batted first and our bowling was great with everyone trying to minimize their score. The
fielding was good with great stops and throws in the field and a spectacular run-out by Vincent
CHEN and stumping by keeper Shuman QUAZI. High batted and all tried hard but we failed by 12 runs
in the end when we lost our last wicket. Run scorers were Abhi DUTTA ( 21), Jeremy YAO (14) and
Vincent CHEN (12). Our wicket takers were Victor HO 2/10 (5), Jeremy YAO 2/16 (5) and Vincent
CHEN 1/20 (5).

2nd Grade Success!
While 1st Grade had a massive win on Saturday, we must not forget that this season 2nd Grade has
been extremely consistent and also had a huge win! They are now 2nd place on GPS 2nd Grade table!
It is an outstanding feat which would never have been possible without Mr Hayman as well as the
