High Talent
The NSW Junior Chess League held the NSW Schools Senior Chess Championships finals last week. Congratulations to the High team of Joseph Nguyen, Jason Cohn, Anthony Hopkins and Richard Hua who triumphed in a clean sweep. Thank you to their coach Alex Feldman who has done so much for our chess program over recent years. Congratulations to Matthew Fsadni, Arthur Kourtesis and Samuel (Ka) Wan, whose major works have been nominated for inclusion in the DesignTech annual exhibition of outstanding Major Design Projects developed by HSC Design and Technology students. Alasdair Brown (Performing Arts Unit Symphony Orchestra member) has been invited to perform in an ensemble at the opening ceremony of the Australian Youth Olympic festival in January next year. Well done, Alasdair. Congratulations Matthew Tong and Plini Roessler-Holgate (music accelerants) for their Encore nominations. It was a great team effort by the first XI in a game against Scots that went down to the wire. The boys held on for a victory, ensuring a clean sweep in the top three teams, an excellent result for the cricket program.

Lak Saviya Foundation – Year 10 Communities Project
Since the Tsunami ravaged Sri Lanka in December, 2004, we have been supporting the reconstruction of a coastal government school, Kahawa Rathnasara Maha Vidyalaya (KRMV), through the Lak Saviya Foundation, run by a group of Australian businessmen with Sri Lankan heritage. They have received our latest donation of $1641.40 and will send a selection of projects to utilise the funds for our approval. The school has now an ADSL connection. SBHS has financed additional English language classes at the school and more students have the necessary communication skills to start a dialogue between our two schools. I would like a small group of current Year 9 students to work with your Year Adviser, Ms Crothers, to set up contact with KRMV during 2009. Mr Liyanage, the President of the Foundation, will arrange the link. Volunteers should contact Ms Crothers in the first instance and I will pass on the information to the Lak Saviya Foundation.

Sydney High Cadet Unit 25th Anniversary Annual Dinner
Last Friday, the cadets held a special annual unit dinner to mark the 125th year of Cadet Unit activity at 探花视频. A good representation of serving Old Boys and former Old Boy Defence personnel joined High cadets and parents at the occasion, hosted in the established military fashion, by Dining President CUO Ho and Dining Vice President CC Michael Do. Cadets were awarded recognition for Leadership, Dress and Bearing and for Outstanding Contribution to the Unit. The most prestigious prize, because it carries an Honour Board commemoration was the Major General James Norrie Prize for Military Skills, which was well earned by CUO Jack Wachsmann.

Music Assembly 2008
Ashley Townshend (1996-2001) was the Special Guest at our Music Awards Assembly this week. He spoke of the influence music had on his life at High and on the directions he has taken since. He praised the life and social skills that participation in the program engendered. Encore nominees – Brian Lau, Dominic Wong and Zhi Zu – played pieces and a surprised Matthew Tong was informed about his Encore nomination for Composition. Paul Pang (2006 - Piano Legend) presented prizes for the SBS Piano Competition, with Zhi Zu taking out the senior division and William Baxter, the Junior Division. Awards were presented for the Marching Band, Music Prefects, and Music. The most prestigious Award, Musician of the Year, went to Thomas Wilson. My address is reprinted below.

Special guests, members of the Music Committee, staff and students, welcome to our 3rd annual Music Awards Assembly. This morning’s assembly recognises and acknowledges the participation and excellence of our performance music program students. Music as a co-curricular activity has a respected status in GPS schools because musical performances are integral to many assemblies, formal occasions and special events that define and build school culture. The combination of academic and performance music consumes large budgets and employs many people in our schools. At High, musical performance ensembles are determined by talent. The elite ensembles are frequently vertically integrated. Music is an inclusive activity and it provides opportunities for students to perform for an audience. Musical performance showcases the talents of our students to the wider community. Our Marching Band has built up an enviable reputation at Anzac Day marches for its size and playing ability.

Each year we assemble to honour the important part that music plays in the life of our school. The number of students studying music to the HSC level has continued to be strong, with several musicians nominated for Encore each year. Ensembles are operating well.

Thank you to the Music Staff and Ms Louise Graul for their work in administering the music program this year. Debra Gilmore, Rita Miller and Suzanna Lim have put in a great deal of effort to support both the academic and performance music programs this year. Dr Deborah Street has led the Music Sub-Committee of the P & C energetically with the help of Treasurer, Anne Aylmer and Secretary, Debbie Dukes. I thank the Music Committee on your behalf for their support.

I must extend a special thank you to the 探花视频 Foundation for their recent donation of $35,000 to replace our grand piano that has graced the Great Hall stage for at least 35 years but last term played its last tune.

High produces many outstanding musicians. I congratulate those boys being recognised and awarded today and urge as many boys as possible to engage in musical training and performance.

Letters Re Absence/Lateness/ Early Leave

When your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required.

If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Beringer, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school. Return to Index

News From Latin

In August this year, a group of Year 9 Latin students entered the Latin Reading Competition organised by the Classical Languages Teachers’ Association of NSW. The event was held at St Aloysius College, North Sydney. The boys received an excellent report from the judges, praising their enunciation of Vergil’s rather complex poetry piece, taken from The Aeneid. The boys were encouraged to enter next year’s competition.

Recently, these Year 9 students were presented with Certificates for their performance on the night. Here you see the boys with their Certificates (photo in PDF version of the High Notes).

International Latin Competition In other Latin news, boys in next year’s Year 9 and 10 Latin classes are advised of two events that will involve them: The Latin Reading Competition and the International Classical Languages Certificates.

The International Languages Certificates is a world-wide competition which looks at a student’s knowledge in Classical History and Culture, as well as the Latin language. The questions are multiple-choice, and the examination papers are brought in from America. Sydney Boys High will be entering this international competition for the first time in 2009.

Students who gain outstanding results are awarded with medals. Excursions are also being organised for these classes.

Trivia Night (for want of a better word, since there is nothing trivial about Latin…) with teams of students showing their deep knowledge of all things Roman. This event is hosted by a member school of the Classical Association.

With 2008 drawing to a close, all Latin students can now reflect on the past year, marked with considerable achievements for many, and look forward to another productive year of their Classical studies.

SHS Old Boys Union

Headmasters of Sydney Boys High School
George Campbell Saxby, the School’s fifth Headmaster (1925-1933), was born on 5 February 1869, the son of Jacob Saxby, a Public School Headmaster.

He enrolled at Sydney Boys High in January 1884, as part of the second intake of students following the foundation of the School in October 1883. He became dux of the School in 1885 and 1886 and was first among the 探花视频 candidates at the Senior University Examination in 1887.

After completing a BA at Sydney University in 1891, he taught for two years at All Saints’ College, Bathurst before being appointed to the soon-to-close Bathurst Girls High School at the beginning of 1893. He returned to Sydney High as a mathematics teacher in August 1893, became master in charge of mathematics in 1902 and then Deputy Headmaster for one year in 1912.

During this time, he was President of the Old Boys’ Union in 1908 and 1912, and a Vice President in 1909-1910. He was also a Vice President in 1914-1917.

He became Headmaster of the newly-opened Orange High School in 1914 before moving to Maitland in 1916 and Newcastle High School in 1919. While at Maitland, he introduced the prefect system, no doubt influenced by the introduction of prefects at Sydney High in 1910.

He returned to 探花视频 as Headmaster in 1925. The next eight years saw the establishment of the Parents and Citizens Association in 1925, the move from Ultimo to new accommodation at Moore Park in 1928 and the establishment of the McKay Sportsground in 1932. The period was also characterised by continuing success at rowing (the 1st VIII were Head of the River in 1925, 1926, 1927 and 1929) and new success at athletics (the athletics team won the Senior GPS championship in 1930) and cricket (the 1st XI were GPS premiers for the first time in 1933).

The current badge and motto (“veritate et virtute”) were instituted at Mr Saxby’s suggestion in 1928 as he disapproved of the old School motto, “extremos pudeat rediisse” (“be ye ashamed to come in last”) which he knew the boys translated as “last home lousy”.

He retired at the end of 1933, the School’s golden jubilee year, and died on 25 May 1954. Saxby House in the intra-school sporting competition commemorates his contribution to Sydney Boys High School.

Do you find yourself killing time in the car park, before heading off to work yourself? Why not spend that half hour or hour in the Canteen chopping veg or serving breakfast with Karen and Tracey!

ASX Sharemarket Game

Well done to everyone who participated in the ASX Schools Share Market Game 2.This period has been extremely challenging as a result of a significant downturn in financial markets. In the whole competition only 2.55% of syndicates finished with their portfolios in profit. Over this time the All Ordinaries (AOX) lost 21.76%. In comparison the top three national winning syndicates grew their portfolios by up to 18%. The winning national syndicate finished with $59,084. Sydney High had 91 participating syndicates, comprising over 200 students. 8.8% of High Syndicates finished with their portfolios in profit. The successful and not so successful syndicates are featured below.

Once again the Yr 9 students outperformed the more senior students. The ASX Game will be up and running again next year. It is compulsory for all Yr 9 Commerce students, but it is open to all other students either individually or in a group.

• Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy only when others are fearful.
• Much success can be attributed to inactivity. Most investors cannot resist the temptation to constantly buy and sell.

SHS Cricket

A day to remember for High with the 1st XI, 2nd XI and 3rd XI all with victories over Scots which is the first time we have achieved this top three result since 1991 (from the past records available that I could find). Two first innings wins and an outright win by the 3rd XI. Congratulations to all concerned especially to the 1st XIs rendition of the School Song. Reports reaching us from the North Shore confirm this was audible!!!

Last Saturday there was confusion in respect to turning up to matches because of rain and many players let down teams by either assuming cricket was off, or not checking recorded wet weather messages at competing schools. Not only did they let the players down who know the rules and attend, but they also left HIGH with the embarrassing position of having to apologize to our opponents for the 5th XI, 15C and14C lack of numbers. Unfortunately many tried the School Website but could not click onto it which is a problem that we have already addressed with our site.

CRICKET WEBSITE - WET WEATHER ADVICE: From Sat 22nd NOVEMBER 2008
By 7-30am on Saturdays (Match Days) on ALL GPS Competition dates, the CRICKET WEBSITE will have a message indicating either ALL games are “ON” or “OFF”(including other school locations), OR which games and grounds have been cancelled. The Cricket Website address is shown at the Header of these High Notes. Commencing this Saturday 22nd Nov.

LATE UNAVAILABILTY ADVICES
I am constantly required to ask extra of participating players to make up positions for players who are not doing the right thing by their teams in pulling out late on Fridays. If you are aware of commitments to other than your sport, it should be advised to us on Sport Afternoons so we can address the situation at that time. Recently two boys representing Group 1 teams (Two Day fixtures) advised they were not available for Day 2 of the matches when they were aware of the commitment the previous week. This did three things. Left us short, cost the team a chance of victory, and denied another boy a chance to play a match in a Group 1 team.

1st XI (Day 2) FIRST INNINGS WIN
HIGH 10-289 defeated- SCOTS 10–272
Day 2 saw a thrilling hard fought game which got down to the last 18 runs. The victory can be attributed to a solid batting performance from Nakul PEDNEKAR (88), Avindu VITHANAGE (55), Alisdair BROWN (26) and worthwhile contributions from the rest of the team. This performance was backed by a tight bowling performance from Neeraj VYAS 4/37 (18), Razeen AHMED 3/51 (22) and Alisdair BROWN 1/13 (9) the main wicket takers. Thanks to our scorer Lachlan BROWN and upcoming cricketer Tom CONNOLLY (14As) who played a large role in our victory when they fielded for the injured Avindu. See Website- full Match Report

2nd XI (Day 2) FIRST INNING WIN
HIGH 10–105 & 4-105 (decl.) defeated SCOTS 10-34 & 6-13
In an outstanding start to Day 2 High applied pressure to Scots achieving the last 4 wickets for 8 runs with Hashan SUBASINGHE taking 5/13, Sam LANE (on debut) 3/0 and Saif HAQUE 2/10 producing great returns. High batting a second time got off to a sound start by openers Ryan McDONALD (24) and Nafiz CHOWDHURY (28) and High then declared at 4-105. Scots batting a second time with 13 overs left to play were immediately in trouble and finished at 6-13. Wicket takers for the Match overall were Hashan SUBASINGHE with 7/18 (incl. 5 wkts in an innings), Saif HAQUE 7/12. Congratulations to all players on a great effort. See Website - full match Report.

3rd XI (Day 2) OUTRIGHT WIN
HIGH 10-163 defeated SCOTS 10-78 & 10-82
Avish SHARMA (45 n.o) and Arun KRISHNAN (43) added a quick 26 runs during the morning to leave High with an 85 run lead. Scots batting a second time lost quick wkts with Timmy LIM 2/24 and Shejil KUMAR pushing through the overs while trying to secure wickets and with a change of bowling Balraj OUGRA 5/9 and Siva VALLIAPPAN 2/22 ripped through the remaining batsmen to bowl Scots out to win by an innings and 3 runs. 16A (Day 2) CONTROVERSY
SCOTS 10-164 defeated HIGH 10-156
As the close scores depict, a cracker of a game was played against Scots where it came down to the line. Henry SIT (42), Nathan KOK (22) and Leon LI (14) batted well for the home team which suffered some close umpiring decisions which would have reversed the result. Despite the disappointment High embraced the spirit of the GPS congratulating the Scots team members. See Website - full Match Report.

15A (Day 2) MISSED OPPORTUNITY
SCOTS 3 -108 (35) -defeated- HIGH 7 -107
High let Scots get away early and put them in a position to take the points although, after drinks, High got back in the game but couldn’t capitalize and finally passed our 107 only 3 wkts down. Well done to all players for tuning up ready to play in the wet. Run scorers Krishnendu DUTTA (45 no), Caspar PRICE (15) and Ishman BARI (12). 14A (Day 2) GREAT RECOVERY
SCOTS 10-272 -defeated- HIGH 9-170 & 4-164
What could have been is the question team members are asking themselves with this remarkable comeback by High to save an outright loss and with the emergence of some of our young batting potentials in Owen DUFFY (29 & 92), Tom CONNOLLY (46 & 0), Alexander HUGHES (25 & 39) and Sudam DIAS (25 no). In addition all members contributed with 10s and 15s in the fight back which indicates this team is on the verge of a great season. Wicket takers were Ahdil ANSAREEN 2/43 (10), Christopher PINTO 2/27 (6) and Sudam DIAS 2/26 (7). This is “true grit” and illustrates the level that High Spirit generates in a team that is determined to achieve successful teams and is an example that other teams could well do with. Report from Lee Ming advised High won the toss and batted losing runs through poor elementary cricket skills but the drinks break allowed us to regroup and finish with 82. We missed too many runs through poor communications and silly run-outs. Run scorers were Lee MING (36), Rahib AZWAD (18) and Vivian LE (11). The acting Captain Aman Saksena reported that unfortunately several players let them down and they were short in the field and when batting. High lost the toss and struggled to get an earl wicket until Allen FU pulled out an excellent run-out from square leg but our bowlers were not supported due to several catches being dropped. When High batted we were disadvantaged through some key batting players not attending but did the best we could against a good attack. Based on the performance of the ‘A’ grade games I saw on the weekend, I would like to see all the boys from these teams at junior firsts this week. (3:30pm Thursdays in the gym)

HAYMAN CUP UPDATE! – WEEK 5
This week the 15Ds have shot to the lead clear of 3rd and 8th grade with another 20 point win. It is extremely surprising that someone like M Zhu who scored 19 out of their team’s 37 points is in a D team. Any player, who is consistently scoring high double figures, should try to play for the best team possible. The High Basketball Program gives a lot to you, and you in return should try to play for the best team possible.

SHS Sailing: High Tide

Sydney Boys High School Sailing
Sydney Boys High Sailing are looking for interested students who are going into Year 9, 10, 11 or 12 in 2009 to join an Accelerated Sailing program in Term 1, 2009. No prior experience in Sailing will be required. Join up and you too could be spending your hot Wednesday sport afternoons in summer learning to sail on Sydney Harbour. For more information, see Mrs Collignon in the Visual Arts Department.

16.1 When a right-of-way boat changes course, she shall give the other boat room to keep clear.

When did you start sailing? Why?

Term 4 Year 7, because I’ve always wanted to learn the skill of sailing – I was very intrigued by how great a speed can be reached using only the wind.

What are some of your GOALS in Sailing?

To improve my tactical knowledge in racing.

What has been your best Sailing experience?

Sailing in reasonably high winds, and hiking out. It is quite exhilarating.

Rifle Shooting Dinner

Mr Geoffrey Blinkhorne, President of the 探花视频 Rifle Club cordially invites club members and supporters to a dinner to commemorate 125 Years of Target Rifle Shooting at Sydney High to be held in the Great Hall, Sydney Boys High School, Moore Park, Surry Hills.

Saturday, 13th December, 2008, tickets on sale until 28th November 2008

Doors open 7pm for dinner at 7.30pm Cost: $45 per head (Students $30)

Parent Mentors

We are looking for new Parent Mentors
A Parent Mentor is an informal contact person who will welcome New Parents into the School Community and is available to them to help them through the difficulties encountered in their first year at the School. The aim is to have every parent of a new boy starting at the School matched up with a mentoring parent already at the School.

The role of the Mentoring Parent is:

• To actively contact the new parent and make them welcome and be a friendly face in a big organisation.
• To make themselves available to the new parent by phone or in person or by email as they see fit.
• To help the new parent with any simple query about the education system and the way the school works.
• To be a point of contact for all the trivial questions that might plague a new high school family.
• To advise the new parent of the appropriate channels of communication at the school for serious matters e.g Year Adviser, School Counsellor etc
• To act as a propagandist for the School and the great benefits of being involved in all the facets of their son's education.

The scheme is informal, without a lot of structure and depends for its success on the enthusiasm of the Mentors.

The scheme has worked extremely well for three years and has not been at all onerous.

All the Mentor Parents this year have enjoyed it tremendously and the New Parents have been extremely receptive and grateful for the contact.

As there is an attrition rate every year we need new Mentor Parents.

Please join us as the more parents we have the easier is the task.
