High Talent
What a great effort from the first and second grade basketball teams to defeat the strong Shore school in both grades last Saturday! I am informed High has not achieved this outcome for 15 years. Dr Wright, Headmaster of Shore, graciously telephoned me after the game to congratulate the boys for their great teamwork and persistence. The boys really played for each other – a tribute to their commitment and to the coaching staff who have trained them. Encore nominations were earned this year for the HSC by Brian Lau (Music 2), Zhi Zu (Music extension) and Dominic Wong (Music 2 and extension). Congratulations, boys! It is very rewarding when members of the public take the time to ring the school to congratulate it for the behaviour of its students. Beryl S. rang this week talking about the great behaviour and manners displayed by David Tran (10) and his friends. She said I ought to be proud of my students. I assured her that I was and that I would publish her comments. Well done boys! William Clegg (2005) recently won a University of Sydney Academic Merit Prize and a Public Service Association of NSW Prize in the University of Sydney Government and International Relations Awards.

Back to the Sheds Day
It was most gratifying to see the High Old Boy VIII competing against two current student VIIIs on a beautifully sunny morning at the Outterside Centre last Saturday. It is in the nature of these things that the Old Boys won the contest by 2 races to 1. Old Boy John Croll was in the crew in an eight fittingly named ‘John Croll’. I was pleased to present the ceremonial oar to Jack Singleton, crew convener and dietician. It was a friendly atmosphere with rowers and their families, Old Boys from various past crews, parents and staff, joining in the rather festive occasion. I hope that the Rowing Committee is inspired to organise more of these days to involve the wider school community and to advertise the professionalism of the High rowing program. It was also an opportunity for a dedication to be celebrated. The ‘Commander Callaway’ name plate from the boat named after a famous Old Boy rower, coach and Olympian, was presented to the school by John Croll who had ‘come by’ it. Thank you to David Daish who mounted and framed the keepsake. It was unveiled on the day by the donor who recounted some of the deeds of coach Callaway and told the story of how the name plate was acquired.

Tennis Courts Dedication Stone
A dedication stone has now been laid next to the gates to the refurbished tennis courts, acknowledging the contributions by the 探花视频 Foundation and the Parents and Citizens Association to the project, jointly financed by them in 2006. The loan is scheduled to be repaid by 2010. Thereafter, the tennis courts will be operated for another five years by the Foundation with free access to them by the tennis program.

School Uniform
Students and their parents are reminded that this school is a full uniform school. Students in Years 10-12 must wear the senior school tie. I have had numerous reports of students not purchasing a senior school tie despite being in Year 10. Juniors (Years 7-9) wear brown ties with a blue stripe. Seniors (Years 10-12) wear a brown tie with a school crest on it. Please comply with the school dress code. Similarly, boys going into Year 10 in 2008 were requested to purchase a white shirt with school crest from the High Store. That is the official school uniform. Next year students in Years 10 and 11 will be expected to wear the crested shirt. Similarly, Year 7 boys were asked to purchase a crested blue shirt when enrolling. In 2009, students in Years 7 and 8 will be expected to be wearing crested shirts. Teachers are asked again to raise their expectations in respect of school dress, to request boys to comply and to report on SAD those who do not comply, despite being asked to do so.

School Contributions
This school runs out of cash at the end of October each year. We rely on parents paying their school contributions to get us through until the end of November. Please do not let down the vast majority who support us enthusiastically! We need everyone’s financial support to continue delivering such a wide range of services in a context of professional organisation of activities.

SBHS / SGHS 125th Anniversary Cabaret Night
Time is running out to join in an historic evening of entertainment and conviviality. It will be another 25 years before a similar opportunity to be a part of High’s history will be possible. Get together a table of 10 and make the night a social and more affordable occasion. Please support our joint celebration!

English report

As always there are many exciting things going on in English. Year 8 are studying the play version of Morris Gleitzman’s novel BOY OVERBOARD, the story of Jamal and Bibi who are Afghani refugees making the dangerous journey to Australia. The wonderful Johnny Lieu, one of the original performers in the play, is one of our Year 11 students. He has been generous with his time and skills, teaching a master class to every Year 8 group. In the class, students have listened to Johnny describe his experiences in the play – from the nerve-wracking first audition, through blocking, tech run throughs, weeks of intensive rehearsal and a demanding performance schedule at the Parramatta Riverside Theatre and later, the invitation to perform at the Adelaide Fringe Festival.

He has also taken the students through a number of drama activities in class, so students have had some experience at physical theatre and developed some of the skills needed to perform.

It’s been a pleasure to have Johnny in classes and we know how much the students have appreciated his input. Thanks so much Johnny, from all of us.

Write a review, win a prize!
We had another successful drama experience last week, when we took all of Year 7 to see Just Macbeth! It was a wonderful introduction to Shakespeare – we absolutely loved it! We’d like to announce here a competition for all Year 7 students. Write a 200 word review of the play. Each class will judge the best one submitted, and then teachers will submit this for the final cull by next Tuesday. The best review in the year will be published in next week’s High Notes and the winner will receive a whole multipack of WizzFizz, which ought to be enough to make a decent potion of some sort. Look out for the winner next week!

SHS Old Boys' Union

Headmasters of Sydney Boys High School
The final series of historical items for this, the School’s 125th-anniversary year, will be biographies of past Headmasters. The biography of the first Headmaster, Joseph Coates, was published in Term 1 as part of the history of the School at Castlereagh St. The series, therefore, commences with the School’s second Headmaster, John Waterhouse.

John Waterhouse
John Waterhouse was born in Campbelltown, Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), 3 March 1852, the second son of a Wesleyan (Methodist) minister the Rev Jabez Bunting Waterhouse. His father's ministry took the young John Waterhouse around Australia in his early life. He commenced schooling in a small country school in South Australia and then enrolled in St Peter's College, Adelaide in 1860.

In 1864 he enrolled for a short period in Dr Frazer's Grammar School at Maitland, but then transferred to Newington College as a boarder. He soon returned to Newington as a student teacher and studied at Sydney University at night, obtaining a BA in 1873 and MA in 1875. He finished at Newington as assistant to the Headmaster, Joseph Coates and, in October 1883, it was Mr Waterhouse who stood in place of Coates as Headmaster of 探花视频 because Coates' contract with Newington would not release him until the end of 1883. In January 1884, Mr Waterhouse went on to be Headmaster of the newly-opened Maitland Boys High School. Maitland Boys High commenced operations in Saucie House, which Mr Waterhouse had attended 20 years before when it was occupied by Dr Frazer's Grammar School. Alone of all the country high schools established in 1883-1884, the Maitland High Schools survived the 1880s. Numerous factors contributed to their success when others failed but one of the factors was, no doubt, having John Waterhouse as Headmaster.

In 1889, he was appointed Inspector of Schools in the Dungog region. His period at Dungog was marked by tragedy for, in October 1894, his wife and one daughter (one of his six children) lost their lives in the wreck of the "Wairarapa" while visiting family in New Zealand. In January 1896, Mr Waterhouse transferred to the Lithgow district, but this position was to be short-lived. In July 1896, he was appointed headmaster of 探花视频 at the age of 44. He took on a school that had suffered as a result of the 1890s economic crisis and the degenerative illness of its first Headmaster, Joseph Coates. Mr Waterhouse himself reported to the Department that he had found Mr Coates "not only a wreck physically but [with] his mental powers impaired".

Over the next nineteen years, Mr Waterhouse was to lead the revitalisation of 探花视频. The enrolment increased from just over 100 in 1896 to 350 in 1906 and 422 in 1915.

Academic results at the public examinations during Mr Waterhouse’s time were outstanding.

Sport was also revitalised with the formation of a sports union in 1905 (eventually merging into the School Union in 1913), admission to the AAGPS in 1906 and participation in the Combined High Schools Competition from its inception in 1913.

The school's second magazine, The Record, commenced publication in 1909 and the prefect system was established in 1910. The School Union was formed in 1913 to co-ordinate all extra-curricular activities.

The School's achievements in this period are all the more impressive when it is considered that the building and location in the industrial setting of Mary Ann Street, Ultimo were far from ideal; it was said in an official report that "the clang of the hammer is too often an accompaniment to the teacher's efforts and the student's thoughts".

On his departure from the School, a contributor to The Record summed Mr Waterhouse up thus:

"He was cautious without being conservative, progressive without being adventurous, sound in judgment and able to take a comprehensive view of the a whole situation where enthusiasts were liable to be dominated by a sectional view."

Mr Waterhouse retired as Headmaster of Sydney High in 1915 on medical advice. His doctors had given him only two years to live. He lived to spend 25 years in retirement. One of his retirement hobbies was fossils and his name is perpetuated in the Nuculana Waterhousei which he discovered.

He died on 19 March 1940. One of his children was Walter Lawry Waterhouse (1887-1969, SHS: 1903) who became Professor of Agriculture at Sydney University, 1946-1952.

Welfare Resources in the Library
When the new Welfare Department got started about 7 years ago now a special Welfare stand was set up to point out to the boys the wonderful new Self Help books the library had been asked to buy. As these books are no longer new welfare books are now relegated to the 300 numbers (for the most part) – put in “Welfare” as a subject into the catalogue computer. To get to the point I have just been doing a final check on some new resources and feel that teachers, students and parents can find some really helpful items under “Welfare”. For example, the new resources are for teachers, students and their families who may suffer from Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, Language and communications difficulties, Emotional and behavioural difficulties or ADHD. Other resources include works on Asperger’s Syndrome and of course books for parents of Gifted and Talented children and the children themselves for whom talents are not always heavenly.

OBU Author
The installation of the honour board for Order of Australia recipients last week brought our Old Boys Collection to the attention of a number of Old Boys and many of them are also authors. As a result I had a very welcome phone call from Graeme Mann (class of mid to late 60s) who, though a civilian, ended up maintaining the American Army’s mainframe computers in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. His book – The Vietnam War on a Tourist Visa – is an indictment of employer duplicity, workplace bullying and all of the latter which is endemic in army bureaucracy. I will give it a fuller review when I finish it. Many thanks, Graeme.

I thought I might draw our students’ attention to the fabulous illustrations in some of our very expensive books including our wonderful art collection. Music Notices

Outstanding Achievements
Congratulations to the following students for their outstanding achievement in their HSC music performances and prestigious Encore nomination: Brian Lau (Music 2), Zhi Zu (Music Extension) and Dominic Wong (Music 2 and Extension).

Congratulations also to Jeremy Ireland who achieved his Licentiate award in his AMEB piano examination last week.

Tapas and Jazz in the Courtyard Concert
We would like to invite you to our Tapas and Jazz Concert in the Courtyard on Sunday the 16th of November at 5pm. There will be a an all day workshop on Friday the 14th of November culminating to the concert with a cost of $15 for students involved to help cover the costs of professional tutors. (Please disregard the misprint from last week’s music notes). Boys will need to be at school by 4pm on Sunday to set up and warm-up on their instruments.

The cost of the concert is FREE and we ask that you please bring along a picnic basket to enjoy with your family and friends. We look forward to your company for a wonderful afternoon of fantastic music by our Jazz ensembles.

Music Awards Assembly
Our Annual Music Awards Assembly will be held on Monday the 17th of November 2008 in the Great Hall at 11am. The assembly is to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our music students involved in our Ensemble Program, our Music Prefects, Encore nominations and Piano competition recipients.

We would like to extend a warm invitation to all parents to come and join us at the assembly.

'Night at the Movies' Spring Music Festival
This year's Spring Music Festival will be held on Saturday the 29th of November at 6:30pm in the school's Great Hall. Our theme this year is Night at the Movies featuring selected works from film music. The concert will showcase all of our ensembles except for Stage Bands and promises to be a fun-filled evening.

There will be popcorn and drinks on sale and a surprise finale.

Tickets will be sold on the night, but we encourage you to buy them prior to the performance to ensure a smooth running of the evening. Please make payments at the main office and collect tickets from the music staff. We look forward to this magical evening of quality performances by our talented musicians and hope you are able to attend to support their efforts and hard work.

Hayman Cup
The 15D’s are leading the Hayman Cup this week on 16 points, with 1st Grade just behind on 14 points. Remember wins are 2 points, draws and byes 1. Bonus points are only received for wins greater than 20 points and the amount of bonus points depends on your team. Anything can change at this stage, so practise hard as a team! SHS Cricket

With a rare opportunity away from all-day umpiring/scoring, due to lack of parental support available to our teams I was able to see many of our teams in action at some time during their games on the opening day on Saturday last.

Initially our problem was team shortages due to confusion over grounds indicated by Shore’s Location map, AND through players not checking their team selection on the Cricket Website. On Friday last I had to make 21 changes due to late advice of “commitments and reasons” for being unavailable, and if players are not available for Saturday matches they will have to select another sport with the advice of the Head Teacher Sport.

Adding to this problem is that our coaches involved in University exams were not with teams which would have overcome some of the problems. Thankfully team coaches will be returning over the next two Saturdays.

However, our results were promising particularly with our junior teams, some of whom were making their debuts and some good performances from individuals in our intermediate teams. We finished the day with 2 victories and in promising positions with the 3rd XI, 16A and 15A in Group 1.

Overall our biggest problem was poor fielding and lack of fitness particularly by players in Year 9 and upwards which needs to see a lot more attending the Fitness session arranged by the Principal and conducted every Monday afternoon. This factor basically has led to teams concerned having to chase an extra 35-50 runs per innings, through the lack of application by our bowlers and slowness in the field. If anyone has aspirations of achieving selection in the 1st or 2nd XIs they will need to demonstrate their fitness to gain or maintain selection in the current and future seasons.

GROUP 1. TEAMS (Two Day fixtures)

1st XI (Day 1) HIGH 10 – 124 -V- SHORE 1 - 81
High batting first were sent in by Shore and after a steady start with runs at a premium wickets were regularly lost due to players not valuing their wickets. Best batting performances came from Avindu VITHANAGE (23) and Brian KELLY (24). See Cricket Website for full match report

2nd XI (Day 1) HIGH 3 – 39 -V- SHORE 3 -301
A captain’s nightmare on a day in the field when his bowlers offered half trackers, full tosses, bowling both side of the stumps and fieldsmen being caught flat footed , lack of fitness condition in the pursuit of the ball contributing to Shore’s final total. The pick of the bowlers, Saif HAQUE took 1-43 (11) with Ashwin RAMESH and Hashan SUBASINGHE taking one wkt each. In reply High have the job in front of them and it will now test the batting skills of the team in patience, shot selection and total application.

3rd XI (Day 1) HIGH 10 - 118 -V- SHORE 3 – 61
After a promising start and being in a position to post a big team total, after the “the wicket taker drink break” saw High capitulate losing 8 -24 in a mere 13 overs in a display lacking application and coupled with undisciplined batting and soft dismissals. Main run scorers were Balraj OUGRA (35 –on debut), Seijil KUMAR and William LIN (20). In reply Shore lost wickets but kept the score ticking over to be 3 – 61 at the close of play. Wicket takers were Avish SHARMA 2-8 (6) and Seijil KUMAR 1 – 17(4) who also took 3 catches. See Cricket Website full Match Report.

16A (Day 1) HIGH 10 – 165 -V- SHORE 0 – 0
In a promising start to the innings lack of experience saw a solid foundation for a match winning score evaporate when with 10 overs to complete the innings the words ‘have-a-tonk” were produced which is the result for poor application and undisciplined batting. As a result at the end of the day Shore were left to chase an achievable 2,75 runs per over on day 2 to cement a victory. Run scorers were Kumudika GUMARATNE (52), Oliver PIERCE (42)

15A (Day 1) HIGH 0 – 0 -V- SHORE 10 - 239
After having Shore struggling with 5 wkts down in the early session, after drinks in the last session of play, saw High produce untidy bowling giving Shore easy runs to finish with 239, which should have been no more than 170. Wicket takers were Derek WEI 3 – 21, Caspar PRICE 2 – 23, Ishman BARI 2 – 43 and 3 bowlers took one wicket each. 5th XI HIGH 10 – 88 -Defeated- SHORE 10 – 87
Led by the “dynamic duo” Mark (LIB) LUCCHITTI and Tasneem CHOUDHURY, this composite team recorded a remarkable victory backed by 16As and tennis stars to even get on the field. This was commitment and school pride at its best!! Congratulations to all who contributed.

14B HIGH 7 – 84 (25) - Defeated- SHORE (15C) 11 – 42 (17)
A remarkable match result!! High were short of players and Shore allowed 4 of our team to bat again to ensure a match. They also supplied substitute fieldsmen when we bowled. Our thanks for the sportsmanship of their coach and team. However, the result would have been the same with or without the support with runs being scored by all in the initial innings and a magnificent bowling effort by the team’s “Dhruv Duo” had Shore 4-10 within 4 overs and 8 - 35 at drinks. Wicket takers Dhruv GUPTA who took 5 –2, Dhruv SABHARWAL 3 –1, Allen FU and Zafar MOHAMED took one wkt each. Run scorers were Dhruv GUPTA (19 & 16), Dhruv SABHARWAL (6 & 6) and Shi FENG (7). 13 A SHORE (14.B) 5 - 85 -Defeated- HIGH (13.A) 10 – 84
A great effort by this young team in their first ever match for their school. After being 0-38 High collapsed losing 6 wkts for 13 runs to finish on 84 (including many extras by Shore). Christopher OEI (15) and Thilan SUBASINGHE (12) were the main run scorers. Wicket takers were Kritman DHAMOON and Tushar JOSHI with 2 wkts each. Well done to all concerned. SATURDAY 1st NOVEMBER
Parents and players are advised to check the Cricket Website as team selections, team promotions and acting captains will change. Advice on these changes will also be outlined to all players at roll calls at sport on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.

Final team selections will be confirmed at sport, so they can be placed on the cricket Website Thursday evenings. All commitments (where applicable) must be advised on sport days.

Team Kits are to remain with teams and team captains will be responsible to monitor who is transporting the kit to their match and supervise the packing and transport at the end of play. Kits cannot be delivered to locations on Saturdays due to fixture timings and varying locations.

SHS Rowing Committee

We’ve had an exciting week at SHS rowing. Melbourne High was here on their annual exchange to compete against our Year 10 VIIIs. Our crews dominated and Melbourne suffered the ignominy of having one of our boats destroyed by the perils of the weather on the Parramatta River. Still a great experience was enjoyed by both schools in this enriching interaction. High boys will visit Melbourne early next year to experience rowing on the calmer waters of the Yarra. Thank you to all the Year 10 families (Petrie, Gollan, Ovadia, Caetano, Liao, Lu, Stefanidis, Gorey, Zhai, Tran, Eveleigh, Fang) who billeted the Melbourne High boys.

Saturday was Back-to-the-Sheds for the Old Boys and their families with the inaugural ‘Old Boys VIII Challenge’ being held. The seats were bought at the rowing reunion dinner earlier this year, as a donation to High rowing, and they raced the High 1st and 2nd VIIIs. The crews were -

The Old Boys enjoyed the lead up program of 5 early Saturday morning rows and the result of this was an impressive performance in the three races against the High crews. The first race saw the High 1st VIII disqualified for attempting to row the Old Boys off the river. The second race was a convincing win to the High 1st VIII, and the final row was a lesson in how to get a good start for the school crews. The mature crew grabbed an early lead from a jump start and held this to the line with impressive rhythm, power and plenty of weight added to the argument.

The post race festivities were highlighted by the unveiling of the ‘Commander Callaway’ nameplate. John Croll (1981) and James Ritchie (1960) donated the plate and John explained the history of the boat it came from. Alan Callaway rowed in the first VIII in 1935 and coached winning SHS Head of the River crews in the late 1950s. He then went on to coach the Australian VIII at the Mexico Olympics winning a silver medal. The ‘green boat’ was commissioned in 1978 for the World Championships and then used by the Sydney Rowing Club with the reputation of being undefeated, until it met a barn door on the Parramatta River. Like the Melbourne crew it was damaged beyond repair and John Croll souvenired the nameplate in 1983. It has now been lovingly mounted with photo and story by David Daish and hangs at the Outterside Centre. The Old Boys enjoyed the barbeque and a ‘Bondi Blonde’ or two and I hope a tradition has started for the future.

Thank you to the committee Katharine Deacon, Anita Bezjak, Bernie Desmond, Peter Ambrose, Steve Whiting, Geoff Andrews, Tailoi Chan-Ling, Tanya Arsenova, Maya Iyer who kept the catering going all morning and made our guests, including Melbourne High, feel welcome.

SHS: Foundation Years

Sydney Boys' Hgih School has had three homes in its 125-year histroy. This new publication celebrates the 125th anniversaty of Sydney Boys' High School by revisiting the years spent in the School's original home in Castlereagh Street- the foundation of State secondary education in New South Wales.

This 56-page work relies on first-hand accounts and original documents, and images to provide a fascinating account of the School's earliest pupils and masters, and their activities at the School and beyond.

Orientation Afternoon

Parent volunteers needed for Orientation Afternoon
On Tuesday November 18, there will be an Orientation Afternoon for new students entering Sydney Boys High School in 2009.

From 3:00 pm until 3:50 pm, refreshments will be served in the Courtyard for our new students and their families. Refreshments will also be available after the Assembly from 4.45pm until approximately 5.30pm.

School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS)

School Student Code of Conduct: Students travelling on buses must:-

• Dip school bus pass or pay the fare when joining the bus. This is particularly important as the data collected from the on bus fare collection system may be used for service planning purposes
• Use school specials when provided
• Vacate seats for adults when requested
• Follow the driver's instructions about safety on the bus
• Respect the needs and comfort of other passengers
• Behave appropriately at all times (e.g. no offensive language, no throwing things)
• Protect bus property (e.g. no vandalism)

Students are reminded to:-

• Only use the school bus pass for its intended purpose i.e. for travel between home and school (does not include travel to and from sporting activities)
• Maintain possession of the school bus pass at all times.

During 2008, authorised officers will be deployed to inspect Code of Conduct compliance on school bus services in the Eastern Region. Students who are found to have breached their obligations may lose their travel entitlement and possibly incur an infringement.

SBHS & SGHS 125th Anniversary Cabaret Night

Sydney Girls High School & Sydney Boys High School have great delight in inviting you to the Anniversary Cabaret to celebrate 125 years of education for both schools.

Friday 21st November 2008, 7:00pm - 12:00am. The Shannon Room, AJC Function Centre at Randwick Racecourse

Come and dance to the Shy Guys band, MCs Jessica Rowe and Jack Singleton. Featuring Little Pattie and other performs.

Tickets: $150 per person. This includes dinner, pre-dinner drinks in the Panorama Room, drinks from 7pm until 12am, parking and entertainment.

Dress: cocktail/lounge suit
