From the Principal

High Talent
Well done to the first grade GPS debaters for sticking to their task after a disheartening opening decision against Riverview. The boys fought back to finish the season as well deserved GPS co-premiers and co-holders of the Louat Shield. The team comprised: Lucian Tan, Dominic Bowes and Zid Mancenido. Congratulations again to Andrew Chan who has been selected as a finalist in the Young Workers graphic design competition. High volleyball continues to excel with first grade as co-premiers with Sydney Grammar and second grade as premiers. Well done again boys! Athletics continues to notch up impressive results such as our bronze medal (against sports high schools) in the NSW School Knockout competition indicates. Congratulations to all involved. Ishan Nadkarni was placed first in ‘C’ grade at the recent Queen’s Shoot. He was second in the U-21 section. Congratulations Ishan. Well done to the fencers for their performances in the Schools League finals. The Mini A team won their division and Shaun Pak, Matthew Chan and Frank Li won gold medals. The Senior A team were 4th in their division. Congratulations to Andrew Hau (9) who won a medal for the highest score in his Year in the state for the 2008 ICAS English Competition.

Football Dinner
The end of season football dinner was well attended and the atmosphere congenial. In my remarks I again lamented the underperformance of football, given the great depth High possesses in the sport. I alluded to my speech in 2007 when I outlined: Five steps to improve our underachievement in football. Regrettably, we have made little progress in developing a disciplined training culture in the A-C teams. We have resourced more coaching but we still need a Junior School Coordinator to develop skills across the board in Years 7-9. We still need parent participation in our Football Committee. We have set up pathways links via Sydney University Sports for talented players to continue playing while at university. Our recruitment drive in Years 9 and 11 for 2009 has been quite successful.

This year, after thanking Richard Gifford, Peter Loizou, Edd Pearson, Andrew Bennie and the staff and coaches who supported the 2008 teams, I proposed: Three pillars of a successful football program. The training log will be compulsory of all A-C players. [I would like the training log compliance for first and second grade to be recorded on a spreadsheet and emailed to me weekly during the season]. To be successful we need more kilometres in our teams’ legs; high attendance rates at Monday afternoon speed and agility sessions; repetitive basic drills for trapping and passing the football and weights work for strength. The second pillar is Parental Support. We need interested and committed parents to help school and coaching staff to manage what has become a large organisation. The third pillar is an embedded coaching structure. We need Coordinators for Junior High Football 7-9 and Senior High Football 10-12. We need to attract coaches so that the A-C teams have expert coaches and D-F teams have competent coaches. We need to develop a coaching manual to set out basic skills and drills in a sequential fashion to be developed through the program. We need coaches inheriting a team to know what their players have been exposed to and what the collective expectations are.

Rugby Dinner
The rugby dinner was well organised and attended. Given the disappointments suffered by the senior rugby players, the atmosphere remained encouragingly optimistic. In my speech, after thanking Geoff Stein, Paul Scrivener, Serdar Bolen, Tony Hannon and the many staff, coaches and parents who make High Rugby possible, I alluded to my 2007 address where I had proposed: Six steps to a better future in rugby. In respect of the steps that I thought the school could take (increased coaching presence, establishing connections with NSWRU and SUS, recruiting players via the Year 9 intake program and promoting High Rugby Friends) there has been significant progress in the intervening year. As for the vital steps that the boys needed to take - improving their attitude to the game, encouraging their friends to play and accepting a disciplined training culture – little change was apparent with the exception of the 16As team. There is no grade available to play social rugby any more. Our opposing GPS teams down to 6th grade are taking training seriously. High boys can no longer expect to run on the field unprepared. This year I reiterated Five steps to a better rugby future. The training log is now compulsory for all A-C players. I appreciated the training log compliance for first and second grade being recorded on a spreadsheet and emailed to me weekly by Mr Scrivener during the season. I would like this practice extended to all teams in the High Senior School program for 2009. The second step is for the rugby personnel to use the connections that have been established with Mike Green at NSWRU and Ian Evans at SUS to promote our players and recruit new students. We need to provide attractive pathways from Year 7 or 9 to university graduation, to attract sportsmen-scholars. The third step is to build recruiting connections in places were rugby players gather to compete to let them know about our program. The fourth step is to embed the ‘High Way’ rugby coaching program. Serdar Bolen’s manual for the program needs to be built upon each year for three years to maximise skill development. We need to develop rugby skills in our players 7-9 and to nurture a style of play in which our rehearsed moves utilise multiple players to minimise turnovers and strips. We have to deliver players with higher levels of strength, skill and fitness to the senior school program. I am pleased to confirm the reappointment of Mr Paul Scrivener as first XV rugby coach for 2009, with technical assistance to be provided by Tony Hannon and Mick Aldous. The senior squad will be in good hands. I hope we can build up to three 16s teams for 2009. The final step is for the GPS Heads to make. The GPS rugby competition needs to be restructured to allow the GPS Rugby Committee to provide better matching and organising of fixtures. While it is true that the GPS competition is only about first and second grade, there are up to 38 other fixtures in a round that need to be organised. Whether as a two-tiered or three-tiered arrangement, the pool of schools competing in the Saturday round of fixtures needs to be expanded formally (instead of the ad hoc informality that currently exists) and protocols established for teams of evenly matched players to play against one another.

Year 12 Reports, References and Scholarships
Year 12 boys should have received their reports this week. Many have already made appointments on the sheets outside my office and discussed their reports with me. I urge all students in Year 12 to make an appointment to see me before September 26. Scholarship applications that require estimates of UAI by the Principal need to be handed in urgently. Reference paragraphs in digital form, as well as in hard copy, need to be emailed to: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

SHS Old Boys' Union

Did you know?
Did you know that the K J Andrews Library was named in honour of Kenneth John Andrews (1902-1999) who was Headmaster of Sydney High 1955-1963? He also taught English and History at Sydney High in 1932-1943.

It was during his headmastership that the need was identified for a new wing to provide the School with science laboratories and a library. Mr Andrews advocated for additional library space, in the face of inadequate provision in the Department of Education’s original plans for the Killip Wing.

Following Mr Andrews’ retirement, in 1963, the Department of Education granted the P&C’s request to name the library “in recognition of the wonderful work done by Mr Andrews for the school as a whole and particularly for the library”.

From the Canteen

We have nearly come to the end of Term 3 and our Year 12 students are about to leave us.

We’d like to wish Year 12 the very best of luck in the exams ahead.

We’d also like to call on all Year 12 parents currently volunteering in Canteen, to keep on coming until the end of Term 4, even though your sons are no longer at school.

You see, we won’t have your replacements on board until Term 1, 2009, so we are still very much in need of your assistance. For most of you, this will mean only 2 or 3 more shifts.

And for all other parents, although we really appreciate your help each and every time you turn up for duty, we understand that fitting Canteen into a busy schedule can often be very difficult. Remember, when you just can’t make your shift, it is a huge help to the Canteen staff if you can use the roster to find someone to swap with and advise staff of the change.

Thank you

SHS Cricket

The pre season got off to a low key start last week at sport on Wednesday and Thursday due to the lack of grounds in support of the advanced days allocated to summer sports, but allowed us an opportunity to complete player profiles and brief on the season’s programme and the opportunities it will provide players. Then last Saturday from 10-am to 2-0pm we started in earnest when 41 boys attended the Year 9 trials at the school cricket nets and had the opportunity to bat and bowl for the first time, as assessments and team selections were recorded by selectors and coaches. Well done to all who attended and particularly for the enthusiasm displayed throughout the whole session.

OPEN TEAMS SQUADS
It is pleasing to see that 21 Year 9 cricketers forwarded expressions of interest to trial and seek selection in our premier 1st and 2nd Xis in addition to the boys in Years 10 and 11. The upside of this enthusiasm is that our development programme and policy has broadened the number of players available each season and makes them aware of the need to develop their skills in the junior teams, to successfully move forward. The result of this last season saw 11 players move through the senior team’s ranks with 5 In the 1st XI and the remainder moving through the 2nd XI. This season these boys will be considered as the nucleus of the new teams which of course will leave limited places for Year 9 boys trialling, so competition for those places is building. Not all will make it of course!! But the fact that they will be exposed to the level that is required for the premier teams, gives them the opportunity to play within their age group, develop their skills, score runs, take wickets where applicable and keep the pressure on for consideration for selection in those teams. The bottom line this season is that to be selected you have to earn your place.

YEAR 7 TRIALS - TEAM SELECTIONS – U.14 BRISBANE TOUR SQUAD
Due to the number of boys nominating for cricket and to ensure a fair assessment in the final selection of teams we do not have sufficient time at Thursday sport to see everyone bat and bowl. As a result we are conducting the Year 7 trials this coming Saturday 20th SEPTEMBER from 10-0am – 2-0pm at the school cricket nets where assessments and selections will be recorded for the AAGPS Teams and players who will join Year 8 players to be considered for the Brisbane Tour in December. All players are required to have their personal protectors, batting gloves and a drink bottle with them. Players will not need to bring their cricket kits as we will have plenty of batting pads, thigh guards and some school bats available for use and those who yet do not have their own bats. It is essential that all arrive on time as a net batting order with time slots will be on display.

WHAT EQUIPMENT YOU NEED TO HAVE THIS SEASON
Other than your cricket whites (pants), we urge you to obtain a school cricket shirt (with logo) so that you feel a member of the team as well being in a well presented team when you face the opposition.

All players must provide their own BATTING GLOVES and PROTECTOR and where possible we encourage parents to consider a personal bat for their son. Contrary to some of the information ‘enthusiastically” brought home by your son about the price paid for bats by their friends many good serviceable bats can be bought for between $40 - $75. Based on the average size of players in each of the age groups, for the Year 7 players, the range suitable is a Sizes 3, 4 and 5 bats (PUMA GILCHRIST ) For Year 8 players Size 4,5,6 (WOODWORM BRONZE SATELLITE – Brett LEE) and Year 9 average Size 5,6 , Harrow and Men’s (SLAZENGER V389 PANTHER). None of the bats mentioned exceed $75 each.

If you consider purchasing your bat at Kingsgrove Sports Centre and tell them you are from Sydney Boys High Cricket, there’s every chance you will get a better price. Remember when buying get a bat that is not too heavy, not too big (you can’t “grow into” it in one season!!) and protect it by having a “clear sleeve”fitted on the face and edges.

SQUADS SUPPORT -ANY VOLUNTEERS?
We have a busy week 2 of the Term 3 vacation period where we need support to conduct barbecues, prepare lunches and support our Open and Under 15 teams trialling against visiting New Zealand schools. The response from previous requests for assistance, to say the least, has been disappointing considering the good lead-up time to assess one’s availability. If you can assist please email your details to me, or call, and I can provide you details of how you could assist our boys during this period. Contact details on the Cricket Website at

NSW Queen’s Shoot 2008

From 12th to the 14th of September; last weekend, the 2008 NSW Queen’s competition was held at ANZAC rifle range at Malabar. Representing Sydney High were five promising shooters hoping to gain experience, training and have a bit of good old fun.

The competition began quite well for Sydney High with relatively strong scores across the board. As the day wore on however, due to dehydration, heat and 20-30km winds the scores began to slowly decline. The first day ended without any medallions for High, however the next day bore better fortune. Starting off the next day at 600m Ishan Nadkarni scored a perfect 50.5 to take out the gold medallion and as the ranges began to increase in distance High began to distance them from the rest of the pack. The only other school students there were representing The Grammar School. Ending the day Sydney High took out the day aggregate winning for the clubhouse an outdoor LPG cooker. The third day of the Queen’s competition was in stark contrast to the first two days. After the sweltering dry heat this final day of shooting was marked by gale force winds and pounding rain. It was in this weather that the shooters began to make mistakes and the best shooters were separated from the mediocre. Judging both wind, elevation and managing body temperature due to the cold our shooters bravely put up a fight, unable however, to take out any range prizes. The competition though was not in vain; with Ishan Nadkarni taking out the “C” Grade aggregate as well the Cadet prize, the junior prize and the TYRO Prize. Along with medallions and prizes he also received a Parker pen, a J.W. Sweet guide to better shooting and an outdoor LPG Gas Lamp for the clubhouse. This competition was a great experience for all the shooters competing with exposure to some of the very best shooters from around the country and bettering their understanding of judging difficult and varying shooting conditions. All the shooters involved would like to thank Justin Hill and Kevin Chan for their continued coaching and help as well as our dedicated MIC Cathy Meaney for her support.

Athletics

School Knockout Competition
Sydney Boys High School entered the NSW schools knockout Athletics competition for a chance to travel to Melbourne for the National schools knockout. Realising that many sports schools were against us, we thought we didn’t have much of a chance.

In the senior team, Kogulan Sriranjan came 3rd in a very fast Gold 100m. Joshua Tassel ran the senior green 100m to receive 3rd. Michael Denny-Smith ran a speedy 52.95 to come 2nd in the gold 400m and a 29.56 to finish 3rd in the 200m Hurdles. Joshua Tassel ran 2nd in the green 400m with a 54.03 time. A brave Samuel Lane filled in for the senior team in the Green 1500m with an amazing result of 2nd. Lachlan Street jumped an 11.92 to finish 4th in the Gold triple jump, Danny Fu came 4th in the Green. Dinghua Xiao won the Gold shot put and Matt Rusli came 2nd in the Green. Matt Rusli came 4th in the Green javelin and Michael Myronenko 4th in the Gold. The senior team finished 4th in the 4 by 400m.

In the junior team, Shad came 2nd in the Gold 100m and Brian Kelly came 2nd Green 100m. Brian Kelly also came 2nd in the Green 200m. Samuel Lane finished 2nd in the 800m with a time of 2.19.07. Prashan Prabaharan finished 3rd with a 2.18.18 in extremely fast Green heat. Chris Morrow showed his athletic talents, winning the Gold 200m hurdles and 2nd in the Gold high jump. Andrew Ye came 2nd in the green 200m hurdles and 1st in the triple jump. Junior team finished 4th in the 4 by 200m.

All of the boys put in a great effort with the junior and senior team coming 3rd. The junior team had 92 points, just 7.5 points behind 2nd place and the senior team had 106 points, just 13 points behind 2nd. Altogether this was a great result for the school participating in the competition for the first time, defeating many Sports high schools. Next year the boys will be ready to perform again brilliantly.

Schools League Fencing Competition Finals – High seizes gold!
Last weekend three teams participated in the finals of Schools League after fighting hard to get through to the final – these were the Firsts, the Seconds and the Under 13 As.

The Under 13 As took the gold medal for their division, in an exciting match against an Aloysius team. Our boys were calm throughout the entire match, and they inexorably led the way to victory. The team was able to easily deal with the Aloysius fencer with a very good disengage action whom I had previously watched while judging. Congratulations to the Under 13 As on their victory – we’re expecting more from Frank, Matthew and Shaun.

Our U13 As fenced at our best last Saturday. Our team achieved gold medals both as a team and individually. Shaun Pak put in an outstanding performance, winning the Best Boy award for the U13s. This victory has achieved our school our first Gold medal in five years. – Matthew Chan

The Seconds were knocked out in the first round 5-4 after a close-fought match.

This week’s finals round at Newington College proved to be the sourest bout the 2nd Grade team has ever faced. Max was our most effective fencer wining 2 out of three of his bouts and Caillin and I both only won one. There was a Newington fencer who got yellow carded for repeatedly running into us, but the bout came down to the line, with me fencing the last bout. Sadly I lost knocking us out of a very successful season of fencing. – Anirban Ghose

The Firsts won their first match against Aloysius easily, with a score of 5-2. We advanced to the semi-final and lost to Oxley, who won the competition just as easily, 5-0. We faced off against St Patrick’s for the bronze medal match. St Patrick’s had previously beaten us 5-4 in the round matches. We fought hard and the match went to all nine bouts. I (Julian Byrnes) was fencing. The last bout was tight. The score was 4-3 against me with 45 seconds remaining – in 10 seconds, I equalised. At the last point, we both lunged – and only I missed. There were 15 seconds remaining on the clock. We lost the bronze 4-5.

The NSWFA also awards individual medals and awards to fencers who do particularly well individually. The Under 13 As all received gold medals, and Shaun Pak was declared Best Boy. In the Seconds, Caillin Mckay won a bronze medal for his consistent performance.

SHS Basketball: Shootin' Hoops

Shootin’ Hoops Is Back With New Editors
That’s right Shootin’ Hoops is finally back and hopefully will be better than ever! You’ve probably noticed from the slight changes that have occurred such as ‘Edition 63’ in a new style but more changes will soon be heading your way. From now on Chris Chiam (Year 8) and David Li Wang (Year 9) will take over as the new editors, as Johny Shih (Year 12), who has worked on Shootin’ Hoops since 2005, will be unable to fulfill his position as editor as he is completing Year 12.

If you have any comments, feedback or ideas send them to the new email address for Shootin’ Hoops This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Old Boys' Game
The annual Old Boys Game held on Sunday the 31st of August had a large turn out of Old Boys, parents, players and supporters of High Basketball. 2nd Grade beat Old Boys 44 – 34 but seemed undersized in their rebounding. 1st Grade had what Mr Hayman described as a ‘rusty performance’ however they shared a similar score, winning 43 – 33. This meant that the school won the trophy back from the Old Boys! Justin Chow was delighted to announce that "whilst the Old Boys were bigger, we were more athletic". With some weeks left before the season, I believe if 1st and 2nd grade train hard enough in the following weeks, they will definitely be difficult to beat in the GPS.

House Basketball Results
Senior house basketball has been a success this year due to the great organisational skills of Miss Ward and she must be congratulated. The results are:

Pool A
Torrington defeated Eedy (Forfeit)
Torrington defeated Fairland 36 – 14
Fairland defeated Eedy 26 – 21
Pool Winner Torrington

Pool B
Mackay defeated Rubie (Forfeit)
Saxby defeated Mackay 23 – 7
Saxby defeated Rubie 19 – 11
Pool Winner Saxby

Senior House Basketball was won by Saxby for the third year straight!
