From the Library

Why do we need a new library? Library use survey
Since the advent of the Internet, and particularly since there is now an increasing use of laptops in classrooms, some computer users are quite convinced that there is no further rationale for the existence of school libraries. In fact some newer parents in our school are wondering why Sydney Boys High parents have bothered to raise $800,000 over the last 5 years to upgrade our tiny 1960s library and at least $365,000 to improve library resources – Library Fund donations, a $1,195,000 fundraising effort in total of which our parents can be justifiably proud. (Fundraising is quite a new concept to State Schools)

One reason of course is that our library for gifted and talented boys is very successfully used. We do know from past surveys that at least 850 students pass through the door counter every day - not bad out of a school of 1200 boys. Also from a recent survey of our own students we know that students who achieve better HSC results and prize winners on Speech Night borrow from the library more often than less successful students. This year students and staff have printed nearly 21,000 pages on library printers and teachers have booked in and taught 711 hours in the library this year. The total of class library booked hours in 2007 was 1020 hours. So we are not talking about a white elephant here.

The internet and computers have now been part of school education for the last 11 years. North Sydney Girls and Rose Bay Secondary College have introduced total laptop computer use into junior classrooms in the last year or so. Does this mean that libraries in these schools have become a thing of the past? In fact is our school library just a big lounge room, an escape from the windy asphalt at lunchtime?

In order to answer these concerns and to update our own knowledge of the usefulness of our library I am undertaking a month long library use survey. I will be rotating through the different library areas. I will be endeavouring to categorize use into: fun reading, homework, assignments, ASX, socialising, chess, laptops, printing and photocopying. I will be looking at the amount of group work v individual effort. I will be interested in senior use of the library in study periods.

I will report the results of this survey in High Notes.

This survey’s results so far: 141 student users surveyed. Not too many are wasting time or space.

SHS Old Boys' Union

Did you know?
Did you know that the Fairland Pavilion at the McKay Sportsground in Centennial Park was named in honour of Charles Adnam Fairland (1877-1955; enrolled SHS, 1891). An engineer by profession, he was also an Alderman of Hunters Hill for a record number of years (he is commemorated there in the C A Fairland Hall in Church St, Hunters Hill), President of the Metropolitan Junior Rugby Union for many years and was a guiding force in the City and Suburban Cricket Association.

He was President of the OBU in 1909-1910 and held a number of executive positions, including those of Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer during the succeeding 45 years. The establishment of the P&C Association at Sydney High, in 1925, resulted from the suggestions of Charles Fairland and the Headmaster, George Saxby.

Charles worked with R T McKay in the establishment of the McKay Sportsground. Charles' brother, Sid, was manager of the Sydney Cricket Ground and he was no doubt of assistance to Charles when Charles arranged for the laying of the cricket pitch at McKay.

The dressing sheds at McKay, originally a single-storey structure built in 1933, were extended and a new floor added in 1952. Charles Fairland officially opened the resulting "Fairland Pavilion" on 29 November 1952. He is also commemorated in the Charles A Fairland Memorial Lectern which the OBU presented to the School on his behalf on 1 October 1958.

Meditation for kids

The physiological benefits of meditation have long been recognised, but several research studies worldwide have recently confirmed the powerful effects of this ancient practice. These studies show that regular meditation helps to reduce stress and boost the body’s immune system along with a variety of other positive effects.

However, the benefits of meditation are not exclusive to adults. With so much emphasis placed on academic learning, the pressures during childhood and teenage years can be tough. Regular exams, peer-group pressures, family conflicts and high expectations for success can all result in levels of stress and anxiety that can have a significant impact on a young person’s life.

The authors of Teaching Meditation to Children, David Fontana and Ingrid Slack, two UK-based psychologists who specialise in working with children, believe that meditation is a natural and effective means of overcoming a wide variety of psychological and behavioural problems, such as anxiety, hyperactivity and aggression. “Meditation gives children a tool to control their own minds and their emotions and to better understand themselves,” they say.

Other advocates of meditation for young people also believe that regular practice helps them to improve their concentration and memory, increase their awareness and alertness of mind, be more self confident and also be more relaxed.

A one-day meditation course for students from Years 10, 11 and 12 will be held in the Great Hall at Sydney Boys High School on Sunday 28th September between 8.30 am and 4.00 pm. There is no charge for this course. For more details, visit or see Mr Kesting in the Industrial Arts staffroom.

Gifted and Talented Directive in Visual Arts -Year 7 at Sydney Boys- Term 3/4
Mrs. Isaacs began the new ART CLUB for year 7 budding artists several weeks ago on Tuesday afternoons. It takes place after school and is sponsored by the Gifted and Talented Program at Sydney Boys High.

The boys involved have created large clay heads so far and will be painting large portraits soon. The students involved are Nicholas Vlatko, Nicholas Costa, Markus James, Daniel Wei, Simon Luong , Andrew Vu, River Le, David Zhang and Dennis Wong so far which is a small and creative group.

They work in Room 609 and will receive one merit point for six weeks' participation and a certificate at the end of the six weeks' session in Term 3 and hopefully repeated in Term 4.

Students have demonstrated commitment to their art development and are enjoying the freer studio atmosphere created by Mrs. Isaacs. Any boys who would like to join us need to bring a note from their parent or guardian to Mrs. Isaacs to be considered for membership to the Tuesday afternoon art club in Term 4.

The Portrait Painting Workshop with Katarina Sakkas
Over the past four weeks a group of Art students has been introduced to the complexities of portrait painting and colour mixing by portrait painter Katarina Sakkas. Students were challenged with drawing and painting “live” from a model, learning the methods of colour layering, techniques for building forms and analysing and creating the colour tones in the face. Katarina was impressed by the ability emerging from the group and students have indicated the experience was rewarding. Thanks to the SBHS Talent Development team who made it possible to engage the services of Katarina. We look forward to securing another artist in a different medium to run another afterschool workshop in term 4. Thanks to Ms Reemst for making the experience possible. Students will be advised when they can finalise their paintings..

Athletics

CHS Athletics Report
If you stepped outside each morning from the 4th – 6th of September, you would’ve experienced conditions that were unpleasant enough if you were wearing a jumper with a blazer – think torrential rain and wind. Now imagine having to don short shorts and a singlet to compete at the annual CHS athletics carnival. That’s what 31 determined athletes had to endure in order to stake their claim at a state championship, and the results were the best the school has seen for many a year. Over three days, Sydney High was able to win eight medals in total, improving on all recent performances, and showing that our success at GPS was not a one hit wonder by any means. To top it all off the school can now proudly boast two CHS Open Champions in Michael Denny-Smith (400m Hurdles - 57.63) and Ding Xiao (Shot Putt – 15.94m). Michael also scored a second CHS Championship as a member of the winning Sydney East 4x400m Relay team. Ding also added to his medal collection with a 2nd in the Discus with a throw of 48.56m breaking the school record by over 9 meters, a record which stood since 1965. High finished with 2 Gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze medal which was a great effort and a reward for all the hard work that the athletics team has put in over the season. Thanks to Mr Devlin, Mr Ayre and all the coaches and congratulations to all members of the team.

Other highlights from the carnival were:

  • Our relay teams making the finals in the 12 years, 13 years, 14 years, 16 years and Open age groups. The 12 years (53.75) and open (44.79) teams turned in terrific performances to finish 2nd in their respective finals.
  • Chris Morrow backing up his GPS win with a second in the 15 years High Jump (1.80m).
  • Josh Tassell running strongly to finish 3rd in the 16 years 200 in 23.41.
  • Nine other individual top ten finishes

The other Top ten finishes were:
Anton Brokman – 5th 12 years 800m – 2:25.6 and broke the school record in the heats with a time of 2.33.66
Amarbir Singh – 8th 12 years High Jump – 1.35m
David Nguyen – 7th 14 years Shot Putt – 11.39m
Sam Lane – 7th 15 years 3000m – 9:58.19
Chris Morrow – 4th 15 years Triple Jump – 12.04m, 5th 15 years 200m Hurdles – 28.99
Josh Tassell – 8th 16 years 100m – 12.13 (11.61 in the heat)
Max Kite – 6th 16 years Discus – 35.67m, 10th 16 years Shot Putt – 11.93m

Sydney East Secondary Athletics Carnival 2008
This year a strong Sydney High athletics team went out to the Homebush Athletics Centre on the 11th and 12th of August to compete at the Sydney East Area Athletics Carnival. Expectations were high as there were many athletes in this team who had competed successfully at the GPS carnival in May. In the 12s Dominic Mah had some very strong performances, coming second in the 100m, second in the 200m and first in his 80m hurdles. Anton Brokman placed second in both of his events (800m and long jump) while Amarbir Singh capped it off for the 12s by winning the high jump with a jump of 1.4m. The 12s 4x100m relay team also came first, beating Kingsgrove North High by almost a second. In the 13s Patrick Krakovsky finished third overall in the 90m hurdles and the 13s 4x100m relay team also scraped into first place after edging out the very competitive James Cook Tech. Our 14s 4x100m relay team was just edged out by less than half a second to come second in their race, and David Nguyen kept up High’s winnings by winning the 14s shot put with a throw of 12.65m. Brian Kelly has improved his times dramatically this year, becoming one of the premier 400m runners in the school, and he managed to run his way into second place in the 15s 400m behind a very talented runner from Lucas Heights High. Samuel Lane was beaten to the line in the 15s 1500m by the same runner from Lucas Heights High and finished in second place and also placed second in the 15 and under 3000m, while Chris Morrow and Andrew Ye came first and third respectively in the 15s 100m hurdles, a strong showing of the hurdling program currently in place at the school. Chris continued his winning ways into the 15s high jump where he secured first place with his jump of 1.75m and also gained first place in the 15 and under 200m hurdles and triple jump. Congratulations on your four wins, Chris.

In the 16s Josh Tassel was again heart-breakingly edged out of first place in both the 100m and 200m after winning both his heats comfortably. Jeremy Ireland finished a strong to come third in his 1500m and our 16s relay team continued the trend of second place after being overtaken by Endeavour on the second last leg of the 4x100m relay. Max Kite was also beaten out of first place in the 16s shot put and discus to come second, however, it was a very strong performance from our 16s and we have a lot to look forward to next year. Our fast men in the 17+ events ran well, with Kogulan Srianjan placing third in both his 100m and 200m events. Our athletics veteran 400m runner, Michael Denny-Smith called on all his experience to overtake the runner from Port Hacking in the final 100m to come second, however, he showed us all how to do the 400m hurdles running in first place as he strives to make his way to nationals again. The 17+ 4x100m relay team continued High’s good fortune in the relays by coming first by nearly a second. In the field our seniors also performed strongly, Lachlan Street placing third in the 17+ high jump and Ding Xiao coming third and second respectively in the 17+ shot put and discus. These were fantastic results, with all our 4x100m relay teams going through to state with the exception of our 15s who were edged out of contention.

Sydney High beat Endeavour Sports High to take the point score at regional. These results reflect the effort put into the training from both the athletes and coaches, and special thanks must go to all the coaches who have helped make 2008 such a great year for athletics, especially Mr. Devlin, who is the driving force behind the recent success of the athletics team and who works tirelessly to make sure everything runs smoothly. Without these coaches, nothing can happen.

SHS football held its second annual football dinner last Thursday night to celebrate the achievements of the players and to acknowledge the efforts and support from coaches and parents. Over 230 people attended, which pleasingly, was a significant increase from last year. As usual the night was made possible by the hard work of the dinner organising team, Sachiyo James, Masako Campion, Alice Paul, Barbara Taylor.

Highlight of the night was the attendance of current Sydney FC defender, Nic Tsatalios. Nic was kind enough to present the player of the year awards and to give an insight into his experiences as a professional footballer. I would like to thank Penny Hancock for arranging for Nic to be with us on the night.

15A v Grammar Won 3-1
The 15 A's faced Grammar on Saturday and had a gruelling game of football which produced a 3-1 victory. Thanks to good solid teamwork in the second half we kept possession of the ball and fired in 3 winners. Thanks goes to Max Kobras who has put up his hand on several occasions now to save poor team numbers. He is a valuable asset and fights every minute of the game.
Great placement shots from wing to set up scoring opportunities and as usual brilliant work from Sam and Gabby. Great defence by Nakul Bhagwat who on many occasions in the game saved the team from the Grammar front Line.
A wonderful way to end the official season. Thanks to our coach Frank Caetano who never raises his voice and gives us his time and commitment.
Gianni Romeo for the 15A's

15C v Grammar Drew 1-1
The last week of winter sport finally arrived, a much anticipated final game against Grammar. Much of the first ten minutes was played in our half with the backs working hard, clearing the ball time and time again. After 10-15 minutes, Grammar broke clear and scored a well-earned goal. From that point onwards, a tight contest ensued, with both teams jockeying to propose opportunities for their forwards.
With Coach Steve Sheldon’s encouraging words, we started the second half with a new found physicality. Iftiar Khan took a trademark big throw from halfway which provided a great through ball for Vincent Wang who comfortably converted a goal. Leon Sheldon showed great reflexes by making several saves from corners which could have lost us the game. The match ended in a draw but it was pleasing to see all the boys put in a great effort to draw level with Grammar.
Many thanks must go to Steve Sheldon who has tirelessly trained us on Thursdays and put in a great amount of work into his coaching. Commendations go to Marcell Rocsa for his sustained performance all throughout the season. I hope to play with the same great guys, this has been a great season of thrilling highs and fun.
Iftiar Khan, Captain of 15C’s

14As v Grammar Won 1-0
The 14A’s came to the game knowing that they needed a win. This was the last game of the season and it meant everything. After a very good start, High dominated possession in the 1st half, and at the conclusion of the half, it was 0-0. We gathered round and ran back out onto the park, showing very good potential with our defence, midfield and attack. With 5 minutes left, the hard work of the season finally paid off. Scott threw the ball in to Slava down the line, who then, beat a defender and put in a cross, to Al who was the only man in the box, with two other grammar defenders, he leapt high above them and headed the ball over the keeper into the top of the goal. The parents went up, the players ran towards the goal scorer and excitement was rushing from everyone. We had beaten Grammar! Man of the Match: Anton Brokman
Al Hughes

13As v Grammar Won 3-1
The boys played fantastically in their last game. High were down 1-0 at half-time although we had missed a number of good chances and should have led 2-1. However the boys rallied with a team performance equal to last week and stormed home with 3 lovely goals to win 3-1.
A great performance from Kavan Chen in his new stellar role as centre back repeatedly cleared the ball and our tiny goalkeeper Agnish Nayak made a number of heroic second half saves to protect our lead. There were the 2 goals by our leading goal scorer Jaan Pallandi that were the result of exceptional determination to beat several defenders and a magnificent left footed goal from Arjun Punekar rounded off a great game. The boys have finally moulded into a hard working and talented team which should produce better results next year above the 2 wins and a draw this year.

SHS Cricket

The 2008-2009 summer season is now upon us and this week we saw the commencement of the season programme with the first sessions of Wednesday and Thursday sport days where most of the season’s administration and player contact details were put together. This will be advantageous to us throughout the season and from this point when teams are settled, copies of player profiles will be issued to team managers which will assist in communications and also car pooling elements for away games.

BRISBANE TOUR
Brisbane Boys High School has confirmed that they will take on our under 14 and Under 15 Representative teams and our teams will depart Sydney on Sunday 30th NOVEMBER play Monday 1st and Tuesday 2nd DECEMBER and return to Sydney at the completion of the matches and presentations on Tuesday. Please put these dates in your diaries

BARBERIS CUP TEAM
The new schedule for the Cup has now been confirmed and Melbourne high School will arrive in Sydney on Thursday 4th DECEMBER, play on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th and return to Melbourne on the Saturday night after the match and presentations.

Players selected in the Barberis Cup team will be required to billet the Melbourne boys, or arrange with other parents to provide a billet in support of the Sydney Team. We will be chasing our third consecutive victory in this interstate competition.

SELECTIONS IN UNDER 14 and 15 REPRESENTATIVE TEAMS
The Under 15 Representative team when selected will be required to play in 2 matches against visiting New Zealand School Teams on Tuesday 7th and Thursday 9th OCTOBER which is in the second week of the third term vacation. The group will train as a Team with six (6) “in form’ reserve players who will be eligible for the final 12 that will travel to Brisbane in December. All players will be required to declare that they are available if selected, to play on all of the dates in the Under 15 commitment.

The Under 14 team will also need declare their availability for the December dates to tour to Brisbane. A squad of 18 players will be selected initially with a final 12 being named in the first week in November to train as a Team prior to our departure

DRESS and EQUIPMENT - SPORT DAYS
Cricket will be conducted from 1-0pm to 3-0pm on Wednesday and Thursday Sport afternoons, with all attendance rolls being called at 1-0pm Sharp. Too often students are arriving late which delays roll call and the commencement of training. Those not in attendance at roll call will be marked absent. The 2 hours we have available for training are the most important element to our preparation for matches and we must make the most of these hours in a team environment.

Dress for sport days is Gym shirts / or cricket shirts, school or black shorts and rubber soled footwear. Players will not be permitted to net in their school day wear.

All players must have a personal Protector with them at all times and specifically at training sessions when in nets to avoid injury. Any player who does not have one available will not be permitted to net.

DRESS - MATCH DAYS
A well dressed team that presents each Saturday indicates that they care about and are proud to represent the school in the AAGPS competitions and as such I would ask the support of parents to ensure that they have a school cricket shirt and cap for matches. These can be obtained from the High Clothing Store and Michelle has advised that she has plenty of stock to cater for our cricketers.

TRANS HARBOUR COMPETITION
I have received nominations for two (2) teams interested in the Trans Harbour competitions and have spoken to the organizer re our entry. Unfortunately, our nomination is dependent on at least two (2) adults or coaches to be available on each match day in a duty of care role and as such I can only pass this back to the teams, to seek parent support in this condition of entry. The role is simple, and that is to be with the team whilst they are playing and ensuring that the conduct of our players is maintained. A roster system where parents could do one session would see the need for 10 people to give one (1) day in the 10 week period of the competition. If you can assist the team will you please advise of your willingness to assist, a phone /or mobile contact, the approx date you can be free, and pass it your son who can then let the group leaders know and I will assist them in publishing a roster with contact numbers.

PHOTOGRAPHS
Over the period of the season we see many photographs of cricketers mainly at State and National levels, but rarely do we see someone from High on the front page or in the sports section of the paper. This season during the course of matches where snapshots are taken by parents or players we would like them submitted so that we can put together a collage for The Record publication. I am also seeking a volunteer to take on the role of our publication officer. If you are interested please contact the MIC Cricket.

Run for OASIS

Go to where you can see how much our school has raised for OASIS so far. Lots of you need to get your act together NOW – the run is only two weeks away and you need to get sponsors and collect your kit. For those of you who missed out the first time, here’s a recap...

Sydney High was recently visited by journalist Jessica Rowe, and top Sydney Roosters players, Nate Myles and Anthony Minichiello. They came as ambassadors for the OASIS project run by the Salvos in Surry Hills. Everyone who attended this assembly would have seen the excerpt from this very moving documentary which tracked the life of Darren, a young homeless man who has benefited from the care and support offered by OASIS. You can learn more about the project on

The Community Service team is currently exploring ways in which Sydney High boys can help Captain Moulds in Crown Street, but one way in which we can all help is to register to participate in the Sydney Running Festival on September 21. You can enlist in the 4 kilometre Sunday telegraph family fun run, or the 9 km Sunday telegraph body & soul run over the Harbour Bridge: you can run or walk, or a bit of both: you can even elect to do the half marathon, or the full marathon if you are one of High’s marvellous long distance runners. Once you’ve registered, you will receive an email showing you how to ask your friends and family to sponsor you so you can raise much needed funds for the OASIS team. It’s so easy even Ms Kaye can do it! Registration is simple:

  1. Log onto
  2. Click on ENTER and then ENTER ONLINE.
  3. Choose the event in which you want to participate. A drop down menu will appear, where you can click on the sort of entry you need – e.g. Child - Aus & NZ - Walker or jog/walker
  4. On the next page fill in your details and select team type -> school -> Sydney Boys High School.
  5. Follow the rest of the prompts to the end where you need to pay the registration fee. 6. If you enter before August 31 school aged students are $25 for the 4 km family fun run, and $35 for the 9km bridge run; from September 1 these fees increase by $5. Parents and staff wanting to participate cost slightly more. The good news is, if you reach your event category’s fundraising target you get back your entry fee!

Be quick! Online entries close Friday 19 September 2008 at 5pm

East Timor Collection Campaign

In this day and age I believe charity donating has become detached as it has been reduced to an exercise of merely digging deep into one’s pockets. Although it’s all well and good making monetary contributions, it is the practical donations that seem to go a long way.

Edouard Cousins (2002) stationed as a soldier with the ADF in East Timor came into contact with a school in the town of Maliana. He informed me through Facebook that students in this particular town were eager to receive an education but what they lacked were basic resources such as pens, paper and pencils. Donation boxes were set up around the school for students to contribute to this worthy cause. The collection was initially slow but it eventually picked up, culminating in the compilation of almost five boxes or 10kg worth of stationery sent to East Timor, free of charge. We also collected money from teachers and students and with this money we bought stationery from Officeworks to send over as well.

The success of this campaign could not have been achieved without the support of all the boys digging deep into their pencil cases. Furthermore, all the SRC boys who helped with the collection campaign were pivotal for this accomplishment. Finally, I’d like to especially thank Ms Cradock, the Office Ladies and the Ireland family for donating generously.

School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS)

School Student Code of Conduct: Students travelling on buses must:-

  • Dip school bus pass or pay the fare when joining the bus. This is particularly important as the data collected from the on bus fare collection system may be used for service planning purposes
  • Use school specials when provided
  • Vacate seats for adults when requested
  • Follow the driver's instructions about safety on the bus
  • Respect the needs and comfort of other passengers
  • Behave appropriately at all times (e.g. no offensive language, no throwing things)
  • Protect bus property (e.g. no vandalism)

Students are reminded to:-

  • Only use the school bus pass for its intended purpose i.e. for travel between home and school (does not include travel to and from sporting activities)
  • Maintain possession of the school bus pass at all times.

During 2008, authorised officers will be deployed to inspect Code of Conduct compliance on school bus services in the Eastern Region. Students who are found to have breached their obligations may lose their travel entitlement and possibly incur an infringement.

Letters Re Absence/Lateness/ Early Leave

When your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required. Alternatively you may contact the school by phone on 9361 6910 and dial “4” for the absentee line.

If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Beringer, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school.

Leave
If you require leave for your son please, apply in writing and address your application to the Principal, Dr Jaggar, stating the reason and length of time of the leave. Your son must then present this application to Dr Jaggar for permission for the leave. Please remember to apply before the leave and not after. The Principal must approve all leave applications.
