High talent
Well done to our 2008 NSW Schools Titration competition teams. Certificates of Excellence were awarded to Varan Perananthan, Jun Choi, Bernard Fang (87 errors); and Kevin Le, Arthur Wang, Daniel Jin (90 errors). Some outstanding individual performances were shown in the three other teams but their combined scores were not as impressive. Thank you to the participants and to their trainer Mr Smith. Congratulations to the 16A rugby team for their great game against Grammar. One highlight in a real arm wrestle was Michael Ambrose taking out the Grammar winger. The first XV showed enterprising play with cross field kicking but were out-muscled in the forwards by a big Grammar pack. Kerrod McPherson’s covering tackle is a moment I will remember.

The School Prefect Internship Scheme
In response to my explanation of the new system published in High Notes last week, a parent gave me feedback about how problems might arise in administering the scheme. Let me clarify the concept. Prefect Interns will be able to wear the Prefect tie, order and wear a Prefect pocket and add gold lines to their blazers. They are Prefects in the same way as Interns in hospitals are doctors. They have the role. However, if they do not keep faith with their pledges, their service to the school and their participation in co-curricular activities, they will not in the end be able to have a badge to keep, sign the register or have their service recognised in their references as ‘School Prefect’. An internship is not probation. Interns do the job but can fail their ongoing assessment – so too can our Prefect Interns. We will invest them formally in April, once their commitment to winter co-curricular activities is demonstrated. Just as in the present system, a School Prefect can be stripped of his badge and tie at any time, following an appropriate disciplinary hearing. At some expense we are adding a training feature to the Prefect experience to help boys understand their roles better and to reduce the likelihood of Prefects failing their ongoing internship assessments.

Refurbishment works
After seven years of correspondence and discussions work has finally commenced on fixing the walkway outside the Great Hall. It has been leaking water into our downstairs facilities for many years. Ironically, I am now governed by an extension to an Improvement Notice issued by Work Cover, due to expire on 2/10/08. Principals are held liable by Work Cover for breaches of Improvement Notices. Consequently, the work has to be done despite the problems it will cause. There will be significant disruption to school life caused by the works. All facilities beneath the walkway are fenced off as a construction site for 4 weeks. The Tennis Professional’s Office, the High Store and the Cadets Orderly Room will be affected as access to their areas will be closed for the duration of construction. The High Store has relocated temporarily to the Careers Adviser’s Office at the eastern entrance to the quadrangle. My apologies are offered to Mr Ayre and Mr Bolen for shifting them out of their working spaces and removing their materials so abruptly to accommodate a temporary High Store.

Very noisy pneumatic drills will be breaking up 150mm of concrete along the entire walkway alongside the Great Hall. This product will be carted away in large trucks. This process will take 7-10 days. Thereafter the work of laying waterproof membrane and tiling should be less intrusive. The result by 5/10 should be a ceiling for the four important spaces that does not leak again.

We are still able to use the Great Hall for HSC Music examinations on 15/9. The Great Hall will still be used for major Year 11 examinations on the mornings of 17-19 & 22 September, between 9 and 11am. However, all other Year 11 examinations will be in the Study Centre. Year 12 boys will have their access reduced to allow the exams to go ahead. I ask for your patience and forbearance during this stressful time of disruption to our school routine.

School Assessment Policy – missed tasks
The School Executive has recently reaffirmed its commitment to the current policy concerning missed assessment tasks, including examinations in Certificate Years (10-12). Boys who are unwell should see a doctor and bring a Medical Certificate to school indicating specifically why they were unable to complete the particular assessment task. The unwell student must personally see the Head Teacher of the department teaching the subject being assessed to request to be excused from the task. On receipt of a valid Medical Certificate, the Head Teacher will then apply the individual department’s policy in respect of that particular task. It is important to remember that notwithstanding what may be in the Medical Certificate, if a student chooses to sit for the task or examination, then the result obtained for that task or examination stands as an official assessment task or examination result. Put simply, if you do not feel well, get independent medical verification, lodge it with the relevant Head Teacher and do not sit the task. Obtaining a Medical Certificate after the assessment task or examination is unacceptable.

Year 12 – Final weeks of school
All Year 12 parents should have received a letter from me outlining the important dates and events remaining in the last few months of their sons’ secondary schooling. Any parent who has not received such a letter is advised to contact the school to acquire one.

A Parent Information Evening will be held on Monday 15 September in the Great Hall at 6.00 pm to discuss the subjects studied by boys in Year 9 2009.

Year 10 2009 Parent Information Evening
A Parent Information Evening will be held on Tuesday 9 September in the Great Hall at 6.00 pm to discuss the subjects studied by boys in Year 10 2009. Subject Acceleration (in subjects such as Modern History, Geography, Music etc) has been offered to Year 10 boys in past years. In 2009 Year 10 boys will study 2 electives (possibly including an Acceleration subject). The options available to boys for 2009 will be discussed at the meeting. The main focus of the meeting will be relevant for boys interested in subject acceleration.

Building works

During the next four weeks major repair work will be undertaken on the walkway on the Flat side of the Great Hall. There will be no access to rooms under this area the following arrangements have been put in place

Toilets
The main toilet block may be accessed only from the stairs in the Courtyard. [Only the ten cubicles on the western side of the closed shutter are available.] There are toilets also near the canteen under the McDonald wing;

The High Store
High Store purchases can be made from the old Careers Room between Rooms 106 and 107 during its normal opening hours.

Cadets
The Q Store and Orderly Room are out of bounds

For safety’s sake please stay clear of the perimeter fence and be wary of increased vehicular movement in the playground during this time.

SHS Old Boys' Union

Did you know?
Did you know that the McKay Sportsground in Centennial Park is named in recognition of the work of Robert Thomas McKay (1867-1949; SHS 1884)?

An engineer by profession, his particular specialisation was in water conservation and irrigation. Among his numerous appointments, he was Principal Officer of the Interstate Royal Commission on the Murray River (established to enquire into the just allotment of the waters of the Murray River and its tributaries among the States of NSW, Victoria and SA for purposes of water conservation, irrigation and navigation) 1902-1903, and Commissioner and Deputy President of the Sydney Harbour Trust, 1922-1930.

As President of the OBU, in 1925-1927, it was McKay who conceived the idea of leasing 19 acres of swampy ground near the western gates of Centennial Park. The reclamation of the land, using unemployed men during the Great Depression, was carried out under his supervision.

The first Rugby match at McKay took place in May 1932, against Hurlstone Agricultural High School. The famous Rugby League international “Dally” Messenger performed the kick-off ceremony. The first GPS Rugby match took place on 11 June 1932.

The match was against The Armidale School and High won 68-8.

The first cricket match on McKay Oval was held on 22 October 1932. The match was against St Ignatius’ College, and the result, High: 7-193, St Ignatius: 191.

High Resolves Summit

On Tuesday 19th August, 2008 approximately 400 students from Sydney schools met at Sydney University’s Great Hall for the 2008 Summit. It was a memorable day for the 23 students who represented Sydney Boys High. At the beginning of the day we were welcomed by the program director, John Bush. There were several speeches at the start including an analysis of Dr Jeffrey D Sach’s book A Common Wealth : Economics for a Crowded Planet by Mehrdad Baghai, the Founder and Chairman of High Resolves.

We were then extremely surprised to see the arrival of the next guest speaker, The Hon. Julia Gillard MP, Deputy Prime Minister of Australia. She spoke about her rise from being a keen English student and debater to her current position. At the conclusion of her speech we broke for morning tea and Ms Gillard was surrounded by eager students wanting to speak to her.

At the end of morning tea we were sent to our discussion groups which focused on the future for Human Rights, Design and the Arts, Education, Gender Relations, Media and Communities, Cities, Democracy, Energy, Oceans, Food & Water. A key theme of the day was how ordinary people can do extraordinary things with few material objects but with passion and the will to succeed they can make a difference in the world.

If we have a passion we should never let it get out of our grasp until we finally obtain it. At the end of the day we left exhausted yet our brains were buzzing with the new information that we learnt.”

“After the welcome and speeches, we proceeded to our discussion groups. My group’s issue was the Future of Oceans. We discussed the five readings provided to us, focussing on the importance of the oceans, how humans are laying waste to marine life and the continuing struggle between less developed and developed countries over rights to fish and mine the ocean. After lunch we listened to three experts in the field who included two CSIRO scientists and a university student who expanded on the readings we were provided before the conference. “

Public Speaking

Alexander Hughes (Yr 8) and Christopher Pinto (Yr 8) will be competing in the United Nations Youth Association Junior Public Speaking Competition tonight in Hornsby. They are required to deliver a prepared and impromptu speech. We wish them the best of luck in this prestigious and highly competitive competition. In other news, next week students in Years 7-10 are invited to try out for the Eastern Suburbs Public Speaking Competition. This competition takes place at Scots on November 7 in Term 4. Students in Years 7-9 should attend try outs at lunchtime on Wednesday 10th September in room 209. Year 10 students should attend on Thursday 11th September in 209.

School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS)

School Student Code of Conduct: Students travelling on buses must:-

• Dip school bus pass or pay the fare when joining the bus. This is particularly important as the data collected from the on bus fare collection system may be used for service planning purposes
• Use school specials when provided
• Vacate seats for adults when requested
• Follow the driver's instructions about safety on the bus
• Respect the needs and comfort of other passengers
• Behave appropriately at all times (e.g. no offensive language, no throwing things)
• Protect bus property (e.g. no vandalism)

Students are reminded to:-

• Only use the school bus pass for its intended purpose i.e. for travel between home and school (does not include travel to and from sporting activities)
• Maintain possession of the school bus pass at all times.

During 2008, authorised officers will be deployed to inspect Code of Conduct compliance on school bus services in the Eastern Region. Students who are found to have breached their obligations may lose their travel entitlement and possibly incur an infringement.

The Great Hall will be abuzz on 27 September for an evening of inspiring and soulful a-capella music in the finest tradition of black American gospel.

This is a special fundraising concert to benefit The Crowle Foundation, a community based organisation providing accommodation, training, employment and community access services to adults with an intellectual disability.

2008 Debating Dinner

Traditionally the Debating Dinner is held on the Saturday after the final GPS debate and celebrates the strength of debating talent at High- 2008 will be no exception (except it will be held a week later!). The dinner is also our opportunity to thank our staff and coaches. There will be a comedy/fun debate starring our coaches, with parents providing their expert adjudication skills to decide the winner.

This year's Debating Dinner is being held on Saturday September 13 in the Great Hall at 6pm. The cost of the dinner will be $30 per adult/student. A special price for siblings under 10 years of age has been negotiated at $20.

Bookings must be made by Friday 5th September

Payment for the dinner can be made at the main office. NO bookings can be accepted after this date as catering numbers must be finalised.

Music Notices

Beethoven Concert at SOH
Last Friday and Saturday evening, the Sydney Philharmonic Orchestra and Sydney Philharmonic Choir combined with members of the Sydney Youth Orchestra to perform selected Beethoven works including his Mass in B minor and excerpts from his opera; Fidelio, at the Sydney Opera House. Congratulations to Muhamed Mehmedbasic (Yr 12) who performed with the Orchestra and Choir and played alongside these professional musicians. An outstanding concert, well done!

Year 12 HSC music students
Last Thursday and Friday, our Year 12 music students recorded their mandatory HSC compositions, which they have been working on throughout the year, at a recording studio. We wish them the best of luck over the coming weeks as they will be performing for their practical examinations later in the month, all the boys have worked very hard and prepared thoroughly this year.

Piano Competition
The Sydney Boys High School Piano Competition concluded this week with very high standard of performances heard in both the Junior and Senior sections. The competition gave many piano players the opportunity to display their musical talents. Well done to all the boys who participated this year and thank you for all your efforts. We look forward to next year's round of budding pianists. Congratulations to the following winning participants in each of the divisions!

Another year of High rugby has come and gone. It has been both an enjoyable and frustrating year. The things we had control over were successful and should not be overshadowed by the disappointment of the things that we have little control over.

I would like to thank all the players, coaches, parents and supporters who gave their time to ensure rugby had a place at High in 2008.

Volleyball Report

High’s Second grade team competed against Grammar in a bid to retain their undefeated title in the premiership game. High lost the first set, dropping 6 consecutive points. However, we came back strongly in the second set with the arrival of our new all-star middle blocker Nelson Wang who managed to bring home the second set assisted by our shortest, yet one of our strongest players, Hugh Huang. The third set saw a spectacular performance from Merlin Li which effectively crushed Grammar’s hopes High dropped in the fourth set, losing in a tight set, with the lead swinging either way. The fifth set saw us come in stronger than ever, with Hugh Huang’s jump serve giving us the lead and taking us to a strong finish.

High second grade takes the premiership and remains undefeated for the season.

SHS Cricket

The commencement of training, cricket trials and team selections will commence next Wednesday and Thursday at Sport afternoons for all cricketers and new members to the cricket section. For those joining us we say welcome and to our regular members we look forward to a bigger, more enjoyable and winning cricket season.

The news of the day is the appointment of our new 1st XI Coach, Mr Barry Davison who will take the helm and be the guiding light for the prospective Open Squads in our quest for higher honors during this coming season. Barry, who will be meeting the squads over the next few weeks, brings to us one of the highest credentialed professional cricket coaches in NSW. His role has extended from coaching juniors, to Head Coach of Sydney Grade Clubs, training NSW State Teams in the skills of fielding and catching as well as many specialty training and administrative roles within cricket NSW. High will be the envy of many schools in the GPS when the news of Barry’s appointment filters through the AAGPS cricket fraternity.

In conjunction with Barry Davison’s appointment Anirudh Rao will lead the 2nd XI into this season and will be working closely with him in the preparation of two competitive teams as we aim for a top position in the two competitions. This provides High with a quality coaching panel for the Open Squads as we provide opportunities for younger talented players to be blooded for the future of High’s standing in the AAGPS as a competitive and talented cricket school.

SUPPORT NEEDED
During Week 2 of the 3rd Term Vacation from Monday 6th - Friday 10th October we are engaged in a heavy week of pre-season Trial matches to have our boys ready for the AAGPS competitions and subsequent Australian 5 Highs Carnival and Brisbane Tour at the completion of Term 4 fixtures.

During the holiday period I seek parent volunteers and some players to score, assist with drinks and lunches, as well as at post-match Barbecues with our visiting teams. The parental component is mainly to conduct the Barbecues which will be from approx 5-0 pm each evening, whilst the players nominating are more for scoring and drinks preparation. Lunches will be supplied to players who volunteer to assist with the latter.

Our cricket site has the season’s programme, High Notes, Camps and Clinics information (where applicable), Team Selections and in season results and reports as well as general items of interest for all of our cricketers and parents. Please get into the habit of perusing the site weekly for current information and contact details. This facility is our link for better communication with our cricketing families.

CRICKET CLINICS
Will occur in the second week of the school vacation period and due to the CP Trust Ground maintenance period and the closure of grounds until 6th October we are somewhat restricted in some of the areas where we conduct drills etc. I am negotiating at present to achieve back-up facilities to support the clinics and when finalized the details will be on the website

Pens for Timor

How many pens do you have in your pencil case? How many erasers have you been through this year? We take things like pens, pencils and erasers for granted – we’ve got desk drawers full of them - but for school aged kids in East Timor, pens are really difficult to come by.

Sydney Boys old boy Edward Cousins serves with the Australian Defence Forces in East Timor. He has approached us to help out with providing pens, pencils and erasers to students in East Timor. Year 12’s Varan Perananthan is organising boxes around the school into which you can put any of these things you choose to donate. Stay tuned to the mango sheet to find out where these boxes will be located. Please only put in new supplies- there’s no point sending pens over there where half the ink has already been used. Please donate generously and swiftly- Edward is returning to East Timor shortly and wants to take whatever we can donate with him.

SHS Rugby: The Garlic Sack

Final Farewell for season 08
The day didn’t deliver as many wins as possibly hoped for, but on the whole was a suitable end for an eventful season. Overall there were three wins recorded; congratulations to the13Ds, 14Bs and 15Bs. The big highlight was the improvement of the 13s age group. The Ds played Grammar Cs, winning 10-5. The Bs went from a 54-0 loss to Grammar Bs, to a 19-17 loss to their Bs, a great effort. The 13As went from a 55-0 loss to a 41-14 loss. Not only this, but from watching the game, the 13As matched Grammar in all aspects of the game, aside from some poor tackling, they should have a great go at them next year. The 14As started off with a try and were leading for most of the opening half. Unfortunately this couldn’t be sustained. The 15As didn’t have their best game. The 16Bs played Grammar in the Bs as opposed to Cs this time round, and had a hard time matching up to the bigger side. 16As once again continued good form, coming closest to a win out of any As team, unfortunately, continued pressure did not lead to any points. The first XV finished off on a reasonable note after a tough season, with the loss of many players. This time round, the 1sts improved on the trial by 13 points, cutting the margin down to 39. A precedent has been set this year through the withdrawal of the 1st XV from the GPS competition. If any player wishes to play in the 1st XV competition in the future, there must be a full squad doing every required training session if this is to be a remote possibility. I hope that those trying out for the 1st XV in 2009 commit at the level that only a handful of players have throughout this whole season, so that we can build to rejoin the competition.

1st XV report
A fierce rivalry embroiled on the grounds of Mackay 1 on the 30th of August 2008 as Sydney High took on Grammar. From kickoff until the end High laid hits on Grammar, leading to a fiery encounter. Hours of kicking practice from fly half Nelson Ridges paid dividends when winger Danny Ng received a lucky bounce to score in the corner. The intimidating rush-line defence from centres and mobile forwards caused the Grammar backline to malfunction. Consequently centre Michael Denny-Smith was able to read the play and snatch an intercept try to score under the uprights. Khalid Ahmed who played his first and last ten minutes of 1st xv rugby began his short career with a questionable lineout throw. Man of the match however goes to Shahar Merom with his best performance of the year, working hard at the breakdown causing turnovers and making many valuable tackles.

Rugby End-of-Season Dinner
Tickets for the 2008 Rugby Dinner for all rugby players and parents, at 6pm on Saturday 6 September in the Great Hall, will be on sale at the School Office until Wednesday 3 September. Cost is $30 per person. Every team should have at least one table for this special night.

Age Group Reports

16s
The 16As faced Grammar at Mackay this week confident of a close, tough game. They, and the many High supporters who turned out to watch them, were not disappointed with a game full of big hits and flowing rugby. Team superstar Michael Gao turned it on early with an intercept from which he nearly scored and a massive hit on the Grammar inside centre. This set the tone for the High defence throughout the game, with the centre pairing punishing the Grammar boys all day. However, some unfortunate mishaps with the ball saw a few scoring opportunities go missing, despite carrying the ball forward consistently. After scrambling defence the Grammar boys got lucky in the second half with a try that was to prove the winner. Despite fighting hard in the final minutes for the equaliser, our boys just came up short with a penalty on the final play securing a win for Grammar. Thanks to all the boys for a great year. Man of the match goes to Michael Ambrose for a great defensive game, and great hands under the high ball.

15As
The boys put up a valiant fight against a strong Grammar team. For the first ten minutes, the score line sat at nil all. After spreading the ball to their wing, Grammar were able to put five points on us. They kept spreading the ball throughout the entire first half, adding two more tries before the half was out. With some inspiration from our coaches, we headed back to the field with our heads up, and it showed. Most of the second half was spent at Grammars try line, everyone desperate for the try. But due to a good defence and some handling errors the opportunity was lost and Grammar found some holes adding a few more points to the board. All in all it was a good game. Special mention to Brian Kelly who was mean on the attack and made some solid tackles in defence. Hope to see all of the 15s back next year.

15Bs
This week, our 15Bs achieved their first win of the GPS season in a thrilling encounter. At half time Grammar led one try to nil. In the second half, we scored through Robert Ma, and then Kishan Perera scored and converted his try to bring us into the lead in the dying stages. A last ditch effort by Grammar for victory would have been successful if not for the try-saving tackle by Liam Alymer, undoubtedly the play of our season. Thank you to Samson for doing a great job with coaching us this year.


14Bs
Losing to Grammar in the trials we were determined to beat them this time and we did. All of us ready and pumped to win our last game. Grammar had gotten the first try but that never stopped us. David and Allen both made solid runs, Allen scoring from halfway. Prashan pitched in a few tries, one of them off a quick-tap as the Grammar team was unprepared. We shared the tries around and the score line was 36-5, an excellent win to finish off the season.
