High Talent
Congratulations to Nathan McDonnell who will be the recipient of a 2008 Minister’s Award for Excellence in Student Achievement. In the recent UNSW 47th Annual School Mathematics Competition, Junior Division, John Wormell (10) earned 3rd prize, Dawen Shi (9) a High Distinction and Declan Gorey and Max Wei (9), Distinctions. In the Senior Division Yu (Tom) Sun (12) won a High Distinction and Danny Lam, Christian Katsikaros, An Ton Tran and Thomas Wilson (11), Certificates. Well done to all boys!

Congratulations to Spencer Llewellyn (11) for his Male Leadership Award 2008 from NSW Basketball (Intensive Training Program). Well done to David Nam and Patrick Desmond (11) who have been chosen to represent High at the 2008 UNICEF Australia J-Rap Forum: Junior Roundtable on Asia Pacific: A discussion on regional children’s rights and young people’s issues. A key question for the Forum is: If you could make just one change in Australia to support young people, what would it be? Why?

Running for OASIS
We are calling all fun runners to support the OASIS Running Festival to raise funds for the Salvation Army project for homelessness. Senior students found out about this event at a recent cohort assembly. I am asking for the support of the whole school to get behind this worthy cause. Use of The Flat
The Flat has always been an area set aside for passive recreation. During the last couple of years the area has been developed with cricket nets and basketball courts. Teachers on playground duty have been reminded that the passive recreation policy still applies. Basketball is allowed to be played on the basketball courts but no other games. Cricket practice in the nets is only allowed when supervised. No other ball games are permitted in these areas. Teachers have been instructed to remind boys that The Flat is primarily a passive area and to stop ball games, touch football, soccer etc. These games can be played on Moore Park West. Please respect and observe the school policy when on The Flat. The Flat will be closed to all students for the last week of term 3.

Prefect Intern Elections
Our Prefect Interns for 2008-09 will soon be elected. The ballot nominations have been finalised. Candidates who were successful in their appeals against being vetoed on academic grounds will have probationary status if elected and will have to demonstrate an appropriate academic standard (c. 410 for 12 units) by the end of the Preliminary Course.

The internship concept aims to hold Prefects accountable for their roles and responsibilities and to delay their admission as School Prefects until April 2009, when a formal investiture will be held. In other words, boys will have to demonstrate for some months as Intern Prefects the qualities, service and commitment that got them elected. At the Foundation Day Assembly, the successful 36 Interns will be sworn in and given a ‘Prefect Intern’ badge. They will be allocated roles and have their responsibilities in writing. A one-day Prefect training workshop will be held to help prepare Prefect Interns to be successful in their roles. Their performance as Prefect will be monitored by a number of staff members. No longer will the role of School Prefect be seen as a reward for past involvement in school life. From this year on it will be a role of demonstrated continuous involvement in Years 11 and 12.

Study Day Policy
As we have many accelerating students, some accommodation needs to be made for them to study prior to Trial HSC and HSC examinations. As >90 Year 11 boys sit for the HSC 2-unit mathematics paper, we excused Year 11 for Monday and Tuesday, when the papers were scheduled. Any papers held subsequently did not attract a study day because two half days have been provided. Teachers are concerned at not seeing all the boys in their Year 11 classes as they revise ahead of the upcoming Preliminary Examinations. An appropriate balance needs to be maintained when meeting the needs of accelerating students and non-accelerating students in an equitable manner.

Did you know?
Did you know that the McDonald Building is named after Sir Charles George McDonald (1892-1970; SHS 1910)?

A doctor by profession, he was a founder of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1938 and served on its first council. He became Chancellor of Sydney University in 1964, having been first elected to the University’s senate in 1942.

At school, he was the founding editor of The Record in 1909 and became the School's first Senior Prefect (equivalent of today's Captain) when the prefect system was established in 1910. He was also president of the Old Boys' Union in 1935 and 1936.

The Governor of New South Wales, Sir Roden Cutler VC (1934) officially opened the Charles McDonald Building on 17 March 1972.

Latin

Italian Forum Excursion
On Wednesday, 13th August, Ms Cook’s and Ms Matsos’ Year 8 Latin classes visited the Italian Forum in Leichhardt. The boys actually prepared their own pizzas in groups, including the recipe for an original Ancient Greek pizza consisting of flat bread base, olive oil and herbs (simple but tasty). After lunch, there was an interesting lecture about ancient Rome’s legacy, including its influence on the structures and vocabulary of other languages, such as Italian and English; and the concept of migration, with the focus on the impact of Italian and Mediterranean culture on Australia, very much like the influence the Roman culture had on the Mediterranean world in its time.

And after this? Of course, gelato for everyone. Some historians believe that it was a Roman Emperor who requested that his cream dessert be packed in ice/snow, thus producing the first ice-cream.

Year 8 Classics Camp
Year 8 Latin and Greek classes have already received notes to take home about this camp. Official permission notes will be handed out to boys by the end of this week. Although this camp is not compulsory, it is highly recommended. Boys will have the opportunity to interact with students of Latin and Greek from other NSW schools in a fun-filled atmosphere at Elanora Heights Conference Centre.

Year 9 Latin Reading Competition
Last Thursday evening, 21st August, a group of students from Year 9 Latin participated in the annual Latin Recitatio, a presentation of poetry readings to an audience. Many schools, both State and private, were involved, including Sydney Girls High, North Sydney Girls High, St Aloysius’ College (who hosted the competition)and SCEGGS, Redlands. Students had to memorise an extract from Vergil’s epic poem, The Aeneid, and present a choral reading. Points were awarded for accuracy, interpretation and choral cohesion.

Sydney Boys also had a representative in the challenging Solo Verse reading section: Dennis Kim. Dennis’ interpretation was polished and sincere. Congratulations to Year 9 participants,Samuel Beston, Ilya Bonch-Osmolovskiy, Bryan Do, Declan Gorey, Dennis Kim, Vivian Le, Michael Liu-Li, Oliver Pierce, Ashwin Rudder, Jeffrey Tang, and Max Wei. These students should be proud of their efforts in this event.

National Latin Examinations
In 2009, Sydney Boys High will be participating for the first time in this International Competition. Students are examined in a number of areas, such as Grammar, Culture and Vocabulary (word derivation.)

There are many levels of exam, open to most years. Prizes are many, ranging from Certificates to Awards “summa cum laude”. All applications must be in by February next year, so start preparing, all you Latin scholars!

OASIS Film Screening

On Monday this week five students from Year 11 and School Captain David Vien made their way to State Parliament House to watch a documentary called The OASIS, an in depth look into the OASIS support network based in Surry Hills, which is the Salvation Army’s response to youth homelessness in Sydney. The documentary is confronting, and at times shocking: I still remain surprised at the extent of youth homelessness across Australia. Over 22, 000 teenagers are homeless every night across Australia. It’s a staggering number. OASIS is there to support these young people through providing accommodation, counselling, job opportunities, drug and alcohol programs, education and most importantly, a second chance. After we saw the film we met Beau, one of the homeless people whose story is depicted in the documentary. It’s so easy for society to write off kids like Beau – but what we witnessed shows that this would be a terrible injustice. It was amazing to see him so transformed. Beau’s story is really inspiring: he is training to become a youth worker so he can support people who are like he was, when Captain Moulds and his team helped him through an incredibly tough time.

What can you do to help?
The Sydney Marathon is held on Sunday Sept 21st. Sydney High is committed to support OASIS by running for homeless youth. There are four different events in which you can participate: a marathon, a half marathon, 9km run and a 4km run. This is a great opportunity for you to make a difference whilst having fun and getting fit. It takes only five minutes to register online, so tell everyone you know to get involved, and get fundraising!

Match Reports from matches v Scots
Unfortunately a large number of matches had to be abandoned due to the state of the grounds. Hopefully fair weather this week will enable all teams to participate in the final match of the season. Of the games that were played results and reports are as follows:

1st Grade v Scots Draw 2-2
In a match played in conditions that encouraged rapid and regular movement, High dominated the majority of the game and was unlucky not to take all 3 points. Goals were scored by Harrison Lane after an excellent run and lay off from George Lo and Alistair Taylor picked up the scraps as Scots failed to deal with a corner whipped in by Jeremy Ireland. Pat Locke again had an outstanding match, winning possession in the midfield and setting up most of High’s attacking raids. The effort across the field was, as usual, first rate and it was only High’s inability to create and find players free in the box that prevented High from confirming their dominance on the scoreboard.

2nd Grade v Scots Won 1-0
In arguably their best game of the season, High’s 2nd XI continued on their winning way with a solid 1-0 win. High’s goal was scored by the energetic Jarrod Chan, finally rewarded for all is hard work during the season.

Dolan Cup, Golden Boot and Golden Glove awards
Last week’s washouts and results have had little effect on the major awards. The way it stands the 14Cs look unbeatable, 7 points clear of the rest.

SHS Rugby: The Garlic Sack

Last chances for 2008 coming up
Wet weather led to the unfortunate cancellations of many games on Saturday, taking away a much wanted match up before the big hit-outs this week. However, the High 13As and Bs played games, both teams going down by around 30 points. The 14Bs and 14As also had their games: the Bs notched up a tight 17-15 win, whilst the 14As couldn’t use their backs to their ability due to the wet weather. The 16As yet again continued solid form, going down 26-5 to a highly rated Scots outfit.

Tomorrow is the big finale of the winter season. It would be good to see big crowds lining the fields at both MacKay 1 and 4 for Rugby and Football. In Rugby there will be numerous As on As match-ups. The junior teams who have benefited from a great program seek to get one back up on the teams that got us in the trials. The return of Captain Robert Chen to the Opens is accompanied by the return of Sydney High to a 3:00 Kick-off. The Grammar 1st XV have been strong all year, and the Sydney High boys will need all the support we can get if we are to get on top off our arch rivals.

This Saturday is Family Day at McKay Oval
All parents and families are asked to watch the boys play their final game of the season against Sydney Grammar this Saturday 30 August at McKay Oval. Come and support our teams and see how the boys have improved during the season. Game times & fields were advised to boys at Thursday training and are in Upcoming Events on the School website

Final Canteen & BBQ This Saturday
Parents, please help for an hour before or after your son’s game at McKay Oval. Also donations of cakes, slices or muffins for sale at the Canteen will help buy training equipment for our boys.

Rugby End-of-Season Dinner
Tickets for the 2008 Rugby Dinner for all rugby players and parents, at 6pm on Saturday 6 September in the Great Hall, will be on sale at the School Office until Wednesday 3 September. Cost is $30 per person. Every team should have at least one table for this special night.

SHS Cricket

The 2008-2009 season programme is now complete with the confirmation of tours and visiting teams added and it shapes up as being an interesting and challenging season for all age groups. The Under 15 Team tour to Brisbane has been confirmed and we expect an answer as to whether the under 14 Team can accompany them early next week, so it can be announced at sport afternoons.

TRANS HARBOUR COMPETITION – EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST YEARS 7, 8 and 9/10
High participated regularly in this after school competition regularly until 2005 when we were forced to withdraw due to the unavailability of senior personnel to be present on the match days in a supervisory capacity. High had teams in the Year7, 8 and Year 10 Age Divisions and were premiers in all grades over the seasons we were involved. Some teams were dual premiership teams as they moved through the different divisions. It was a great competition and was enjoyed by many of the boys some of whom are still at school. It is played on Tuesday afternoons on MPW pitches(adjacent to High) and Robertson Road (adjacent to Centennial Park) from 3-30pm – 5-0pmThe competition is now in the 20/20 format with all games One day Fixtures previously Two Day fixtures. Six (6) rounds ( Term 4) and four (4) rounds in Term 1 in 2009, then 2 weeks of semi Finals and Finals. Premiership Trophies / Team member’s medals are presented at the finals. We are prepared to enter teams in this competition if there is sufficient interest and to achieve this, discuss it within your Year group and take a list of those interested forwarded it to me by Email. I would like to see two (2) Teams in the Years 7 and 8 and at least one (1) in Year 9, or two (2) teams as combined 9/10 teams. All Expressions of Interest have to be in my hands NO LATER than SPORT next THURSDAY 4th SEPTEMBER. Players can nominate their interest individually if they wish.

DAY 1and 2( WED & THU) –SUMMER SPORTS
On the first two days of Summer Sport all boys will need to have pens available to complete Personal Contact Forms to ensure that we can contact you or your parents in the case of changes or injuries during matches. The forms will also be placed into team groups at the completion of team selections so that all are contactable on match days as well as considering car sharing to games. Coaches will be present on the day and will assist newcomers to cricket. Advice on where we will form up on these days will be included in the daily news sheet (Mango Sheet) on Wednesday and Thursday morning next week

SCHOOL CRICKET KITS- USAGE
School kits are issued to each team for the duration of the season and an inventory of the common contents are recorded in a central register. This season, team kits that have shortages will be the responsibility of that team for the cost of replacement of missing items. High provides good quality equipment for the use of all players and the lack of care demonstrated by some teams and at several matches last season was disappointing. This is a team responsibility and not individuals and all are expected to take their turn in helping to pack the kit at the end of training and at matches, before leaving the location.

FOR OUR NEW CRICKET PARENTS
The AAGPS conduct the competitions each Saturday for a total of 15 weeks overall. In Term 4 each year on the opening day is a series of Trial Matches for teams with the competition getting under way on the 2nd Saturday. The competitions are in two (2) Groups which indicates the type of match played, times and rules for the specific group.

GROUP 1 TEAMS
1st, 2nd and 3rd XI, 17A, 16A, 15A and 14A – play Two-Day matches with varying number of overs. The 1st XI (100 overs), 2nd XI (80 overs), 3rdXI (65 overs), 17A (65 overs), 16A (65 overs), 15A (65 overs) and 14A (65 overs). Other than the 1st and 2nd XIs who play extended hours. All other teams in this Group play either on consecutive Saturday mornings OR they may be scheduled for afternoon matches.

GROUP 2 TEAMS
4th and 5th XIs, 17B, 16B and C. 15B,C and D,15B,Cand D, 14B,C and D, 13A,B,C and D. – play One Day 30/30 over matches either morning or afternoon depending on the draw. Some 20/20 over format is also played in consultation with other school’s spots masters or by the official’s present at the matches. Many parents in the past have requested information on where their son is playing (even after we announce it at sport!!) however to assist you there is the required information in your son’s Student Diary, the Sporting Fixture Card (pocket size issued to them), the School Website AND on the CRICKET WEBSITE (www.sydneyboyscricket.info) which has additional details such as who we are playing and location of the matches, supported by Location Maps and direction maps for all schools.

Fencing

Seniors School League 23/08/09
Most of the SBHS C team was suffering from exam shock on Saturday and went down to St Aloysius C 2-7. They then went on to fence an extremely close match against Trinity A and beat them 5-4, though Henry Mack’s glasses were sacrificed in the process. The general feeling is that it was worth the win.

The SBHS Fs had an unfortunate day, coming up against the Hills B team and Barker C team and losing 0-9 and 2-7 respectively. Better luck next time, guys.

Minis
The Mini Cs came up against St Andrews and went down 2-7. The match score belies the fact that on many occasions, the Cs came very close to taking the bouts, on two occasions losing on 4-5. This is an impressive effort from the Cs.

The Fs faced off against Mosman Bs and won convincingly, with a score of 7-2. “ It was a great match this week, we finally had a great victory, with Scott and Herman winning all of their bouts and Xu-Dong winning one”.

Lak Saviya Barbecue

Friday Sept 5th
Next Friday, Sept 5th the Community Service team will be holding a barbecue to support the Lak Saviya Foundation, an organisation that helps provide education, health services, renewable energy and IT education to communities in need in rural Sri Lanka. Please support the fundraising by buying a sausage-in-a-bun, and a drink at lunchtime. Eat for a great cause!

Pens for Timor

How many pens do you have in your pencil case? How many erasers have you been through this year? We take things like pens, pencils and erasers for granted – we’ve got desk drawers full of them - but for school aged kids in East Timor, pens are really difficult to come by.

Sydney Boys old boy Edward Cousins serves with the Australian Defence Forces in East Timor. He has approached us to help out with providing pens, pencils and erasers to students in East Timor. Year 12’s Varan Perananthan is organising boxes around the school into which you can put any of these things you choose to donate. Stay tuned to the mango sheet to find out where these boxes will be located. Please only put in new supplies- there’s no point sending pens over there where half the ink has already been used. Please donate generously and swiftly- Edward is returning to East Timor shortly and wants to take whatever we can donate with him.

2008 Debating Dinner

Traditionally the Debating Dinner is held on the Saturday after the final GPS debate and celebrates the strength of debating talent at High- 2008 will be no exception (except it will be held a week later!). The dinner is also our opportunity to thank our staff and coaches. There will be a comedy/fun debate starring our coaches, with parents providing their expert adjudication skills to decide the winner.

This year's Debating Dinner is being held on Saturday September 13 in the Great Hall at 6pm. The cost of the dinner will be $30 per adult/student. A special price for siblings under 10 years of age has been negotiated at $20.

Bookings must be made by Friday 5th September

Payment for the dinner can be made at the main office. NO bookings can be accepted after this date as catering numbers must be finalised.

Stewart House Donation Drive

All kids go through difficult times, but some kids have it really tough. They might have very difficult circumstances at home, or mental health issues, or serious learning difficulties, or a combination of these. Run for OASIS

Sydney High was recently visited by journalist Jessica Rowe, and top Sydney Roosters players, Nate Myles and Anthony Minichiello. They came as ambassadors for the OASIS project run by the Salvos in Surry Hills. Everyone who attended this assembly would have seen the excerpt from this very moving documentary which tracked the life of Darren, a young homeless man who has benefited from the care and support offered by OASIS. The Community Service team is currently exploring ways in which Sydney High boys can help Captain Moulds in Crown Street, but one way in which we can all help is to register to participate in the Sydney Running Festival on September 21. You can enlist in the 4 kilometre Sunday telegraph family fun run, or the 9 km Sunday telegraph body & soul run over the Harbour Bridge: you can run or walk, or a bit of both: you can even elect to do the half marathon, or the full marathon if you are one of High’s marvellous long distance runners. Once you’ve registered, you will receive an email showing you how to ask your friends and family to sponsor you so you can raise much needed funds for the OASIS team. It’s so easy even Ms Kaye can do it! Registration is simple:

If you enter before August 31 school aged students are $25 for the 4 km family fun run, and $35 for the 9km bridge run; from September 1 these fees increase by $5. Parents and staff wanting to participate cost slightly more. The good news is, if you reach your event category’s fundraising target you get back your entry fee!

Legacy is seeking help from Sydney Boys High School students to fundraise on Daffodil Day on Friday September 5th, between 7am and 10:50am at Town Hall Station. The support of Sydney Boys High School has been an integral part of Sydney Legacy’s Badge Day operations in the past. It’s a partnership that we wish to nurture and develop so as to continue the success of Badge Day in 2008 and to promote Legacy. Last year Sydney Boys High School helped raise $211,432 in the Sydney CBD and the $880,000 raised across Sydney Legacy’s Divisions.

Students wishing to participate need to return their permission notes by Wednesday Sept 3rd to Ms Kaye in the English staffroom. Only the first 70 students to return their completed permission slips by Wednesday will be able to participate.

We think it’s wonderful that High boys seek to engage in fundraising which will help widows and their children, where their partner/parent has been killed during war or hazardous service, in peace keeping operations or in accidents whilst training for war, or who have died subsequently. We look forward to a great many boys support on Legacy Day.

Rugby Dinner 2008

Help celebrate another great year of High rugby by attending the 2008 End of Season Rugby Dinner.

When? Saturday, 6th September 2008, 6.00pm. for 6.30 pm
Where? Great Hall, Sydney Boys' High School
Who? Players, parents, friends, coaches and supporters of High rugby.
Why? Because the friendships made through High Rugby last a lifetime
Cost? $30/person. Payable to the school office by Friday 22/8/08.

Please note that this is a BYO alcohol function for adults. Maximum seating 220.

Letters Re Absence/Lateness/ Early Leave

When your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required. Alternatively you may contact the school by phone on 9361 6910 and dial “4” for the absentee line.

If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Beringer, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school.

Leave
If you require leave for your son please, apply in writing and address your application to the Principal, Dr Jaggar, stating the reason and length of time of the leave. Your son must then present this application to Dr Jaggar for permission for the leave. Please remember to apply before the leave and not after. The Principal must approve all leave applications.

School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS)

School Student Code of Conduct: Students travelling on buses must:-

• Dip school bus pass or pay the fare when joining the bus. This is particularly important as the data collected from the on bus fare collection system may be used for service planning purposes
• Use school specials when provided
• Vacate seats for adults when requested
• Follow the driver's instructions about safety on the bus
• Respect the needs and comfort of other passengers
• Behave appropriately at all times (e.g. no offensive language, no throwing things)
• Protect bus property (e.g. no vandalism)

Students are reminded to:-

• Only use the school bus pass for its intended purpose i.e. for travel between home and school (does not include travel to and from sporting activities)
• Maintain possession of the school bus pass at all times.

During 2008, authorised officers will be deployed to inspect Code of Conduct compliance on school bus services in the Eastern Region. Students who are found to have breached their obligations may lose their travel entitlement and possibly incur an infringement.
