High Talent
Cohort Assemblies At the junior assembly I announced some important policies, affecting all boys. As from 2009, no boys will be able to back track on the Student Award Scheme. If boys do not claim levels at the end of each year, they will not be able to return to the Deputy Principal some years later and say that they want to go back and reconstruct their yellow booklets to reflect their participation in school life. There is an amnesty period for all boys until the end of 2008. Thereafter, no backtracking will be permitted. For several years I have been asking boys to attend 3 training sessions for their sports. For 2009, the completion of logbooks will be compulsory for all A and B teams and voluntary for C teams. We must run on fully prepared teams when we play in GPS competition. Time management issues prevent boys from reaching their full potential in sports and in academics. Boys need to work out a 24/7 organisation schedule and stick to a regular routine that includes 8.25 hours sleep and a balanced, nutritious diet. At the Senior School Assembly, TV personality Jessica Rowe and Roosters Anthony Minnicello and Nate Myles entertained the crowd while raising awareness of the work of Odyssey House in Surry Hills. Edwin Montoya-Zorrilla spoke passionately about Amnesty International. The community service orientation underscored the need for High boys to use their position of privilege to try to give something meaningful back to society. I reiterated the theme of no more under prepared High teams. Log books will be mandatory for 1st and 2nd grade teams and Head of the River crews. I stated publicly the policy on 1st and 2nd XV training which was three sessions per week and one weights session. Speed and agility sessions could be substituted for one of the skills training sessions. A spreadsheet is sent to me each week by Mr Scrivener so I can monitor the regularity and frequency of training by all boys in rugby. For 2009, I will have a mechanism for monitoring training for basketball, cricket and rowing. We need to be disciplined and to manage our time well. No back tracking for the Student Award Scheme from 2009 was explained to the seniors.
First and Second grade Rugby at High The structural problem of mismatches at first grade level has not been solved. Dr Vallance (Head of SGS) and I, after a joint meeting with MICs of Rugby and Heads of Sport, have agreed in principle on a solution to our rugby fixtures problem for 2009 only. Association Football will be unaffected by the arrangement. The details of the agreement were approved at a meeting of the AAGPS this week. SGS and SHS will merge and follow the SGS draw for home and away fixtures. All schools except High and Grammar will have a rugby bye round. SHS v SGS will take place as usual in the last round of the competition. In the age groups 13-16, SGS will play at A-C-E level and SHS will play B-D-F teams against the four largest rugby schools (TKS, SIC, Shore, SJC). In the open grades, SGS takes 1st and 2nd grade, High will play 3rds against TKS, SIC, Shore and SJC. By agreement with the Sports Masters at SHS, TSC, NC and SGS, there will be flexibility in some fixtures for rounds 5, 6 and 7 so that, depending on the strength of our first XV, it may play more than one GPS fixture at first grade level next year. This can be achieved by SHS playing at 1st or 2nd XV level against the school that has the bye round in rugby when they are scheduled to play High.

Competition. From the LibrarySome important displays for HSC students and prospective HSC students are now going up in the library. Firstly new HSC Study Guides are on display (new fiction display stand) and available for 1 week loan. Secondly, Dr Ganderton’s huge donation of books on the Environment and the Economy are presently going on display right beside them (popular NF books display stand). Access these resources on the Library Catalogue (available from home – via the portal) by entering the terms – HSC or Study Guides. Also on display is an Olympic memorabilia collection and lots of new resources on China. The Olympics is a great opportunity for the world to find out about China. The new resources were a very timely donation by the Chinese Cultural attaché. All resources are available for loan. Open Reserve and Closed Reserve resources will now be housed in the appropriate subject areas and have been made weekly borrowing. (This is a work in progress). Library staff hope that these valuable resources are now more accessible to everybody and not just “those in the know”. Pamphlet files – HSC students in particular are reminded of the existence of these files which can prove valuable as exams approach. Anything with the location P is a pamphlet and library staff are happy to show students how to search for material.

Treasurer's Report The Income Statement for the year shows a net surplus from ordinary activities of $71,846 compared with a surplus of $146,689 in 2006 although it should be noted that the 2006 surplus includes receipt of a bequest of $130,000 from the estate of a former teacher at the school Mr.R.J.Casey. No income tax is payable by the Foundation. Included in the above net surplus figures are trading profits for the High Store of $84,563 for 2007 and $75,635 for 2006. The Income & Expenditure Statement included with the Financial Statements gives more detail of movements in individual items of which significant amounts are
The Balance Sheet at 31 December 2007 shows total equity of the Foundation as $5,237,338 compared to $5,303,190 at 31 December 2006. After taking into account the year’s trading surplus of $71,846, equity was reduced by $137,698 to account for transfer of the Casey bequest from the Foundation to a specific trust. Mr. Casey’s bequest was formerly considered to be a non-specific bequest to the Foundation but is now legally interpreted as a bequest which creates a separate trust to be managed by, but not owned by the Foundation. Depreciation of fixed assets of the Foundation was calculated at the same rates as previous years and charged to revenue in accordance with accepted accounting principles. Construction cost of the tennis courts of $195,812 is being funded by a five year loan from the Commonwealth Bank. Repayment is by equal instalments of principal and interest over five years which commenced in March 2006. These payments are being met from tennis court revenue over the five year period. Balance of the loan at end 2007 was $139,746. Including the Casey Bequest amount of $137,698, cash at bank and on deposit was $251,096 at 31 December 2007. There is also an overdraft facility of $100,000 available at the Commonwealth Bank which is currently unutilised. For 2008 the Foundation Committee has budgeted an operating net profit of $96,742 after deducting tennis court amortisation of $20,000. The 探花视频 Centenary Building Fund of which the Foundation is Trustee, had a net deficit for 2006 (excess of expenditure over donations and interest received) of $3,324 compared with a surplus of $25,118 for 2005. Expenditure by this entity comprises donations to Sydney Boys’ High School building projects and maintenance of Foundation buildings used by the school at McKay Oval and Abbotsford.. At 31 December 2007 the Centenary Building Fund had cash at bank and on deposit of $44,520. During the year the Foundation managed other trusts with 31 December 2007 net equity balances as shown
In early 2008 the Foundation became trustee of the trust established to manage the R.J.Casey bequest (opening balance $144,198 including accrued interest) and the SBHS Scholarship Fund for award of scholarships in memory of Phillip Day (opening balance approximately $16,000)
All of these funds have been invested at interest and will be managed by the Foundation on an
ongoing basis. Public SpeakingThe first round of the Sydney Boys Junior Oratory Competition is almost complete. Students from years 7 and 8 have delivered impressive and entertaining prepared speeches. The following boys were involved in the first round: Daniel Liang, Eric Li, Hunter Wei, Abhi Dutta, Christopher Chiam, Daniel Tam, Christopher Pinto, Yuan Shi, Daniel Keogh, Jonathan Clements-Lendrum, Max Chao, Nick Vlatko and Danny Vo. Well done boys! Please enjoy reading the following reflective piece about Christopher Pinto’s experiences in public speaking. In primary school, I was compelled to take part in a public speaking competition and I felt that I could never be a good speaker. Following some encouragement and support from my teacher and my parents, I took part in the competition and because I was nervous, I worked hard on the speech and was surprised to find that it all ended so quickly. I was informed that my speech was exceptional and found myself part of the debating and public speaking team. In Year 6 I was chosen to be the Master of Ceremonies for an important school function involving past students of the school and local dignitaries. I will never forget the applause I received. Public speaking is an essential skill which can engage us in many events such as speaking at a family function, thanking someone for their contribution to community service, a future job, participating in school competitions or representing your school at functions. SBHS students are very fortunate to have this opportunity and staff to support, guide and promote those interested.
Advice for all first time speakers is get involved as this will overcome any nervousness and
build confidence. Be positive and enthusiastic. It is fun to participate and listen to other
presenters. So, get on your feet and get moving to becoming a public speaker. SHS Old Boys Union
Did you know? Mr Killip was Headmaster of Sydney High, 1936-1951. His earlier appointments to Sydney High were as an English teacher in 1920-1924, and as English Master for one term in 1928. He then held the position of Deputy Headmaster at Newcastle High for two months before going to Hay War Memorial High School as Headmaster in July 1928.

Classical Greek Reading Competition
Year 10 French Study Day They also listened to inspirational talks by students from Macquarie University who were either in the process of studying French or who had previously included the study of French in their degrees. They heard how the study of French was not only enjoyable and interesting but how it allowed them to enrol in International Degrees (which means that they can spend one year studying in a French-speaking country) and how it also broadened not only their minds but the employment opportunities available to them. One student had completed a Bachelor of Arts (including French) and was presently studying Medicine. He stated how his knowledge of French will allow him to realise his ambition of joining the International Organisation Médecins sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders), a voluntary organisation in which Doctors donate a few months or a year of their time to work in underprivileged countries and in return their travel expenses and accommodation are paid for. The day concluded with the “Star Académy” Competition (the French equivalent of Australian Idol and Popstars). Each school had to enter a team and the activity was a karaoke-style performance in French. The performance was judged according to originality, presentation, vocal interest and linguistic quality of delivery. Our students performed “A la Volonté du Peuple!” (Do you hear the people sing?), a stirring song from the musical “Les Misérables”.
Our team of students consisted of Robert Ma, Antony Paul, Jeremy Rajendram, Ankush Thyagaraju,
Julian Ubaldi and David Zhang. Although they got cold feet at first when they saw that
several schools had teams with a cast of thousands (well 30 actually- but it seemed like a cast
of thousands to them!) they performed bravely and well in front of an audience of 250 students
and their teachers. Although they did not win, having to compete with large groups in glitzy
costumes, they are to be commended and congratulated for tackling the most linguistically
challenging song of the day. Well done! Letters Re Absence/Lateness/ Early LeaveWhen your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required. Alternatively you may contact the school by phone on 9361 6910 and dial “4” for the absentee line. If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Beringer, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school.

Picture Books - Not For Babies Begin your journey with the highly acclaimed graphic novel, When the Wind Blows by Raymond Briggs. It is a dark and controversial story which raises important questions about world peace and the effects of nuclear war on ordinary individuals. Find out what happens to Max when he makes mischief one night in Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. It is an enchanting story in itself because of the captivating illustrations but it is also a psychoanalytical study of anger. The most extraordinary work comes from the collaboration between the award winning illustrator Shaun Tan and celebrated author John Marsden with The Rabbits. This unusual and unique perspective of the arrival of white settlers in the land of the numbats is truly inspirational. Check out Shaun Tan’s website for further insights into his outstanding collection of what can only be described as artistic and literary genius ().
Five things to do with a Picture Book SHS CricketWe have been in touch with Brisbane Boys High School in follow-up to the proposed tour to that State in December and it now appears that we may be able to have an Under 14 and Under 15 development teams travel there for two days and a series of two Limited 50 Over matches. This will be a great opportunity for boys to work towards being selected for this tour which will be open to all to try out for the final teams. In addition we will have the value of having played several matches before taking on the ”banana benders” in their home state. These will be inaugural fixtures in a proposed annual trophy challenge between the two states so it will basically become junior cricket’s “State of Origin” which we of course, must claim first up.

The School’s League The Mini C's fenced for the first time and were up against it with the
Newington A's and put up a good fight. We were rewarded with great improvements and an
outstanding win by Ian. Next, we were up against the SBHS Mini E's and had a more even battle.
Ian, Kenneth and I all had wins. We all had great fun and looking forward to new battles SBHS E won both their matches against St Andrews and SBHS C 6-3. This is a great improvement from last week and is definitely well deserved. Congratulations. SBHS G were defeated by St Ignatius 4-5. Sydney Boys High and St Ignatius were tied and as the last bout began it was tense. After a few minutes, which felt like hours, the scores were four all. Whoosh! St Ignatius scored and we lost.
I was judging this match. It was incredibly close, and the match was interrupted several times by
Ignatius, who had unfortunately hired some faulty gear. Our boys were very patient and calm while
the Ignatius team got rewired and didn’t allow themselves to be rattled. It was unfortunate
that the match did not fall our way in the end.
A note from MIC Fencing I would also like to extend to Julian, the Fencing Captain, my congratulations on the fine manner he has represented the school as he has taken up volunteer refereeing during the League. SBHS is fielding the most fencing teams ever and the NSW Fencing Association was appreciative and highly complimentary of Julian’s generous gesture. 1st Grade v Newington Lost 0-2 2nd Grade v Newington Won 2-1
5th grade v Newington Won 1-0 Second half was really much of the same, with both High and New going hard at it. It truly was a commendable effort by both teams, just for the shear fact that no team was willing to give in right up until final whistle. It was however, High that proved to be the better team, and roughly mid way into second half, a little bit of New-box-shuffle meant that Michael Serben was able to slot a goal right past the tall Newington keeper and rocket High into leaders of the match. With roughly 10 minutes to go, everyone on field stepped up their efforts, however High, eager to hold on to the match, continued in their hard work and were able to deny any goals from the really rather expert New forward pack. At games end, the celebrations were barely bearable, with cheering coming from everywhere. The boys from fifths can now sit happily at the top of the table, and with only two games left in the season, we have come ever so close to being crowned Fifth Grade Premiers of the GPS. A special thanks to Andy, Sam and the other temps that helped out during the game, your efforts are much appreciated. Once again, Harry Reid has kept his clean sheet, and was also lucky enough to make a debut for Second Grade – congratulations! In closing, I would like to thank all those who came out to support the boys, the staff for ensuring yet another quality fixture, and the boys for giving it their all and getting the win. Good stuff, see you next time.

Age Group Reports 15s: 15As: Newington played strongly in the first half in contrast to a misfit and switched off team. The injury of captain Jonah Petrie was a wake up call for us, and we played very well in the minutes before and right after half time. Unfortunately, good play by the opposition lead to a try. We were caught on the back foot, suffering from Newington’s counters letting in four quick tries. That being said, we couldn't be prouder for the result with strong contributions from several B's players and Michael Phung, playing up spectacularly for us. Return to Index2008 Debating DinnerTraditionally the Debating Dinner is held on the Saturday after the final GPS debate and celebrates the strength of debating talent at High- 2008 will be no exception (except it will be held a week later!). The dinner is also our opportunity to thank our staff and coaches. There will be a comedy/fun debate starring our coaches, with parents providing their expert adjudication skills to decide the winner. This year's Debating Dinner is being held on Saturday September 13 in the Great Hall at 6pm. The cost of the dinner will be $30 per adult/student. A special price for siblings under 10 years of age has been negotiated at $20. Bookings must be made by Friday 5th September Payment for the dinner can be made at the main office. NO bookings can be accepted after this date as catering numbers must be finalised.

Amnesty InternationalLast Monday, the 11th of August, was a big day for the Sydney Boys Amnesty International Group. We believe it’s important to take action against the Internet Censorship problem taking place in China. Commonly called the Golden Shield or the Great Firewall of China by the world-wide media, it is an obstacle to human rights in that it restricts the access people in China have to certain websites. This event was part of an an effort to raise awareness of the issue in our school and to try and take some action. Like many Amnesty Community groups around Australia, the Sydney Boys Amnesty Group constructed a small wall of yellow, cardboard bricks in the canteen area to represent the Firewall. Taking place at lunchtime, boys from all around the school came to take bricks off the wall to symbolise the destruction of the Great Firewall in accordance with Amnesty’s Uncensor Campaign. Each cardboard ‘brick’ contained a postcard which expressed discontent at the Internet Censorship Program and boys zealously filled these out to take action in support of human rights. The event was a great success and was highlighted by Sophie, a speaker graciously provided by Amnesty International, and we hope we can follow it up with further events in the future. For those who are interested in China or universal human rights in general, everyone is welcome to the Amnesty meetings every Tuesday lunch in room 204.
