From the Library

The Library’s Contribution to Reading/Self Directed Learning in Holidays
Last week our staff was quite impressed by the large number of return on the first day of term and congratulated the boys on their efforts. However this made us question whether these returns indicated loans. So we ran a few other reports to look at how much the library contributed to boys reading over this period.

Our loans by due date report indicated that over this period boys had 1027 resources on loan from the library.

In the two month period from 22nd May to 22nd July boys had borrowed 2506 resources. Currently the librarian is analysing the date due report to acquire a snapshot of which faculty resources are borrowed from the library and what percentage of the total is due to fiction borrowing. This will be reported on here in due course.

Loads of HSC Study Guides
Thanks to some very thoughtful Year 12 boys for the last couple of years the library has acquired a lot of study guides for HSC subjects.

Our staff has just scoured our processing shelves for books which might be useful to our HSC candidates this year and have come up with 48 new study guides and alternative texts. These are being rushed through and will be ready in a week’s time. Of course there are many study guides on our shelves. The most comprehensive list to sift through is to only put in the key term “study” which you can do from home through the portal.

SHS Old Boys Union

Did you know?
Did you know that the Apollo Belvedere, also known as the Pythian Apollo, is widely considered to be the best of the statues of Apollo that have survived from antiquity? Named the Apollo Belvedere because it stands in the Belvedere Gallery in the Vatican, it was discovered in the ruins of Antium in Italy at the end of the 15th century and purchased by Pope Julius II. The Apollo Belvedere is a Roman copy in marble of a Greek bronze thought to have been made by the sculptor Leochares in the 4th century BC. The replica that graces the southern end of the Sydney High main quadrangle originally stood in Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens. It was presented to the School by the State Government in 1945, the Hon R J Heffron (the Minister for Education) unveiling it in a small ceremony that preceded the 1945 speech night. Apollo was a Greek God, the son of Zeus and Leto. His chief functions included care for young citizens, for poetry and for music. The statue depicts Apollo having slain, with an arrow, the great Python which guarded Delphi for its patron goddess, Gaia (Earth). The oracular shrine at Delphi was well-known as one of the main centres of Apollo's cult in the ancient world.

Junior Leaders Course
Three of our members attended the Brigade Junior Leaders Course at Singleton Army Training Area during the holidays. Qualification at this course is a mandatory requirement for promotion to corporal.

On Tuesday’s parade we welcomed back 2LT Clegg from his arduous walk of the Kokoda Track. No doubt we will hear further of 2LT Clegg’s adventure in the weeks ahead.

Rifle Shooting
Congratulations to our cadets who were members of the High team at the GPS shoot last week. Full details of the results shown elsewhere.

Annual Camp
The unit will attend the NSW AAC Bde Annual Field Exercise (AFX) at Singleton over 27 Sep – 4 Oct 08. All Unit members are eligible to attend.

The unit will be a component of C (Charlie) Coy 23 AAC Bn. The camp programme is a full one with a F88 live and WTSS shoot, abseiling, patrolling and field engineering activities.

Unit Dinner 14 Nov 08
The Old Boy response to the advance notice of our 125 anniversary formal dinner has been remarkable and a “full house” is expected.

Unit members and their families should mark up their diaries now and be prepared to book their attendance early. Tickets will be available within the next two weeks.

Mid year enrolments are being accepted now and will close on 31 Aug.

Year 9 Parent Meeting

Our next Year 9 Parents Meeting will take place on Wednesday 6th August at 6:30 in the Common Room.

Our guest speaker is Mr John Walker, Head Teacher of Student Welfare. He will talk to us about the numerous programs and initiatives in place at our school to support our sons and promote their wellbeing. After his address, the meeting will continue and discuss any issue that affects our Year 9 boys. Everybody is welcome to attend! Rifle Shooting

The GPS Shoot was held 21st, 22nd & 23rd of July 2008 at Hornsby Rifle Range. The 1st Grade Team were placed 3rd overall behind Shore in 2nd place and TAS in 1st place. 2nd Grade were placed 2nd in their division. Well done!

Dolan Cup and golden boot/glove awards
With over half our teams unable to play last weekend, several concerned team captains have approached me to determine the effect that this will have on their hopes of securing these major awards. It is obvious that valuable Dolan cup points were unable to be procured and the teams that did play and win, have received an unfair advantage.

I am open to suggestions for a solution that satisfies both those that played and those that missed out, as it is far to complex for me to work out. Perhaps there is some mathematical function that could be applied to adjust the points tally for the teams that didn’t play. I look forward to all suggestions.

GPS round 3: Saturday 2nd August
GPS round 3 is against Kings this weekend with games at McKay, Moore Park West and Kings fields. Check draw for details on school website (upcoming events).

Rubbish left at grounds
A reminder to all that Sydney High Football has a responsibility to ensure that all grounds are left free of rubbish at the end of the scheduled matches. I urge all teams to take pride in the way they conduct themselves, before, during and after matches and ensure that areas occupied by our teams are free of bottles, tape etc at completion. With as many as 6 games to be played at each field on a Saturday, it doesn’t take much from each team to add up to a considerable amount at the end of the day. Bins may not always be available, so just take it with you.

Bill Turner Cup Round 3 v Redlands
Last Thursday our Bill Turner cup team travelled to play Redlands in a round three cup match. Played in cold wet conditions the team performed superbly to register a 1 nil victory and progress to the next round. I was particularly impressed with the standard that the boys produced in such difficult conditions. William Shao was the goal scorer. Congratulations to all and good luck in the next round v Marist Brothers Penshurst. t.

Match Reports from matches v Riverview
Unfortunately more than half of our matches had to be cancelled last Saturday due to the state of the fields. Hopefully the fields dry out for this weekend’s matches v Kings.

1st Grade v Riverview Lost 0-5
High were aware that this was going to be one of the toughest matches of the GPS season and were primed for the contest. In a tight first half Riverview scored the only goal to head into the break 1 up. The first half effort from High was outstanding, with all players challenging fearlessly and pushing their physical fitness limits.

Early in the second half a simple defensive error led to a break away and a second goal to Riverview. This seemed to stun the High players and Riverview knocked in three more quick goals before High knew what had hit them. Despite the score line all boys should be very proud of their efforts, against a top class side.

5th Grade v Riverview Lost 2-5
After such a long winning streak, it’s hard not to be disappointed with this loss to the boys from Iggies. We are still unsure what exactly a ‘17A’ team is, but one thing we can be sure of is that they were a worthy side with a few class players.

The match began in a relatively solid way, with High opening the scoring through an absolutely outrageously awesome shot by fast-man Danny Fu. Coming in near parallel to the goal line, Danny took a shot from the 18-yard and it managed a precise position right in the top of the goals. By half time, the score was two all – with the second High goal courtesy of top-notch tap-in by Simon Hoang. The second half was a bit this-and-that, with Iggies slotting in three while we were unable to manage a goal. The Riverview striking pair made some lightning fast runs down the side and flooded the box with players, ultimately they out-gunned us and achieved the winning result. One thing the mighty High Fifth Grade is still lacking is a dedicated keeper, so I’m putting out the call now, if you are in Year 11 or 12 and can keep the ball out of the net – Come on Down!

Ultimately, it was a fair effort boys and the key thing we need is full pressure till full time, keep up the good work – we’ll get them next time.

16As
On a freezing day, High faced an Iggies team which has proven itself to be spectacular on field. Their record has shown them to be undefeated, with just one narrow loss to Newington. Despite that, High were able to pull out positives with a spectacular 20 yard goal by Avindu, followed by a close range shot by Ben Li.

The recent results have reflected the impact of losing Antony Paul at central defence, as well as several members of the squad who are undergoing a recovery period due to varied injury issues. However, we are optimistic that with the full team due to be back in a week or two, High will be able to stand up to the bigger GPS teams which stand in our path.

SHS Rugby: The Garlic Sack

This isn’t a copy of the Onion bag, it’s an improvement

Rough Rugby at Riverview
Muddy fields was on the agenda for Saturday. The juniors enjoyed great games in the 16s through to 13s. The newly combined senior squad played against the Riverview 4th XV ready to prove a point that they were willing to work, to earn their stripes, and become a 1st XV once again.

The 15Cs and 14Bs both achieved immense wins against their respective opposition. 14As went down in a fairly close game, and the 16Bs down in a game separated only by one kick, and played great in the muddy conditions. The seniors went down narrowly in their first game as a mixed squad. The 16As undoubtedly faced the toughest side of the day showing immense pride against the competition leaders, often punishing them with great hits.

Team of the Week: 16Bs - Played great Rugby on the muddy fields, so unfortunate to not get a win.
Player of the Week: Alex Koerber 16As - Gave an arm and unfortunately a leg on Saturday.

Supporter of the Week: Michael Ambrose and James Whiting 16As - Supported the Senior XV in tough times with great passion, trying to get into the game themselves.

Senior XV Report
High fielded a composite opens side against the Ignatius 4th XV outfit. The game was played in fine conditions, aside from the muddy state of the turf. The game commenced with the High forwards dominating the ruck area making valuable metres. Mention must go to Daniel O’Keefe for his efficient rucking and work ethic. Through some crucial pilfers from Alex Belokopytov and Grigori Astafiev, and the magic of James Ip, High reached deep into View territory. High scored the first try of the game via a rolling maul across the line. Despite High’s efforts in the forwards, Ignatius was able to score on a blunder in the last minute to win the game 13-5.

All players and parents are asked to support the other teams in your age group and then stay to cheer on our senior teams in the games against Kings at McKay Oval this Saturday. This is the 3rd round of the GPS season and our first home game. Game times & fields are in Upcoming Events on the School website

Please help at the Canteen or BBQ at McKay Oval for an hour or so at our home games on one of the next two Saturdays. Just fill out your name in the roster which is being emailed to all parents this week. This is a vital fundraiser for the Rugby program which needs your support.

Tickets for the 2008 Rugby Dinner for all rugby players and parents, on Saturday 6 September in the Great Hall, will go on sale at the School Office next week. Make a note in your diary and get your team tables together for this very important night.

Age Group Reports

16s: The 16Bs went down 14-12 in a tight game. Strong play through the forwards and leadership through captain Gareth Deacon and outside centre Daniel Morgan lifted the team through the 2nd half.

15s: The highlight of the 15Cs game was consistent rucking and great support play. We scored 4 quick tries with solo efforts by Kishan Perera and Shejil Kumar. A great pass by Ryan McDonald to Andrew Gou increased the tally to 5. We increased our lead with a freakish 70-metre try by Dale Chen, a hatrick for Shejil, and an assist by Hareshan Karunakaran for Nafiz Chowdury. In the 15Bs the boys went in confident, after achieving a huge victory in the 15Cs. Poor concentration let in a couple of quick tries. A lift by the boys gave us a try of our own. We entered the second half confident, but View overpowered us despite our efforts. Special mentions go to all the forwards who played back to back games.

14s: In the 14As the game started off with a segment of play where High pinned Ignatius on their own line for the first 15 minutes. A long range try from View took the score to 5-0 at the break. High started off the second half with enthusiasm but when Riverview ran in a try in the corner we let our fatigue take over. Riverview ran in two more tries late in the half and the finishing score was 20-0. This was our best performance yet and we were unlucky not to score in the closing minutes. The 14 Bs took off with a thrilling match against St. Ignatius. The intense match was underway, tackles here and there. Unfortunately a missed tackle let View score 1 minute into the game. Within another minute Prashan Prabaharan put us back to 7-7. Not long after, Prashan achieved his second, then third. With a tremendous effort coming from all the players the final score was 49-7.

Come down to Abbotsford this Sunday and bring your friends with you. Fantastic opportunity to learn Rowing in Sydney in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Whether you are a complete novice or have some previous experience, everyone is welcome. Rowing is the ideal aerobic sport for the entire body as it is low impact and low injury. You’ll enjoy the ultimate team activity as well as the magic moments of early mornings on the water. All our coaches are ‘old boys’ who volunteer their time to make a contribution and they even organise a BBQ breakfast afterwards for everyone to enjoy in this stunning location!

Learning Outcomes At the completion of the course participants will possess the following skills and knowledge:

• Basic knowledge of rowing style and boat rigging
• Basic navigation rules and river etiquette
• Ability to row with a crew in a racing shell

Safety Note: Participants must be able to swim 50 metres and tread water as a safety requirement. All participants must sign The Sydney High Foundation’s Indemnity Form, stating swimming ability, before they are allowed on the water.

Under 18’s must be accompanied by a participating adult.

School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS)

School Student Code of Conduct Ð Students travelling on buses must:-

• Dip school bus pass or pay the fare when joining the bus. This is particularly important as the data collected from the on bus fare collection system may be used for service planning purposes
• Use school specials when provided
• Vacate seats for adults when requested
• Follow the driver's instructions about safety on the bus
• Respect the needs and comfort of other passengers
• Behave appropriately at all times (e.g. no offensive language, no throwing things)
• Protect bus property (e.g. no vandalism)

Students are reminded to:-

• Only use the school bus pass for its intended purpose i.e. for travel between home and school (does not include travel to and from sporting activities)
• Maintain possession of the school bus pass at all times.

During 2008, authorised officers will be deployed to inspect Code of Conduct compliance on school bus services in the Eastern Region. Students who are found to have breached their obligations may lose their travel entitlement and possibly incur an infringement.
