High Talent Congratulations to Zid Mancenido (12) and Max Phillis (10) on their selection as Australian representatives to The Hague International Model United Nations. Australia sends 17 representatives to join 4000 others from 90 countries in this prestigious international relations event. As well as attending a 5-day Model United Nations conference, the boys will enjoy a two week tour of Western Europe. As the only representatives chosen from NSW, Zid and Max really impressed the judges with their talent, passion, diplomatic nous and teamwork skills. Their participation brings credit to them and to their school. Well done to our open Chess team, finishing second to Knox in the Secondary Schools One Day Tournament. Congratulations to first grade Target Rifle Shooting for their solid 3rd place at the GPS Shoot at Hornsby 21-23, July. A great effort came from Ishan Nadkarni (3rd overall) and Matthew Tong (11) resulting in their selection in the GPS Combined Rifle Shooting Team. Thank you to Ms Cathy Meaney and Old Boy coaches Justin Hill and Kevin Chan for their efforts in preparing and supporting the team.
Phillip Day Memorial Scholarship Public SpeakingThe Sydney Boys Junior Oratory Competition starts this week for students in Years 7 and 8. This competition is designed to provide an opportunity for junior boys to develop their oratory skills and listen to some entertaining speeches. Students will be asked to deliver a prepared speech of 4 minutes on a topic of their choice. Students should see Ms Howland for information and to register for the event.
On Thursday 30th July Christopher Chiam and Cameron Morrison will be competing in the Local Final
of the Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award. As part of this competition they will be delivering
prepared and impromptu speeches. We wish them the best of luck. From the Library
Congratulations all you readers on fabulous library use over the holidays. We were so
impressed by the number of resources returned on the first day back to school that we are
publicising your library use - 181 resources returned this morning and 84 renewals waiting for us
to do. 265 resources in total. Well done boys! SBHS: The Foundation Years
AFTER SCHOOL (continued) Alexander Cecil K Mackenzie (1883-1886) became a NSW State cricketer, playing 48 matches between 1888 and 1907. Sydney Edward Gregory (1887) became an Australian cricketer and test captain, playing 52 tests, 1890-1912. Stanley Wickham (enrolled 1889) became an Australian Rugby international, playing 5 tests, 1903-1905. Stanley Rupert Rowley (enrolled 1890) became an Olympic athlete, taking out bronze medals in the 60m, 100m and 200m running events at the 1900 Olympics. Old Boys from Castlereagh Street gained prominence in many other fields, including journalism, law and medicine. Henry Killinger Williams (1885-1887) became the Financial Editor of the Sydney Morning Herald. Charles Warren Harriott (1883-1886) became the Honorary Secretary of the NSW Bar Association, 1912-1928. Henry Percy T Downing (1886-1888) became a King's Counsel in 1921 and was also a director of numerous Western Australian companies. Francis Egerton Barraclough (1886-1889), having been admitted as a solicitor in 1909, became the Deputy Master in Lunacy in the NSW Supreme Court. James Froude Flashman (c 1884) studied medicine and became the Director of Pathology with the NSW Lunacy Department. He became Commander of the Sydney University Volunteer Rifle Corps in 1900 and served in the Australian Army Medical Corps in World War I. He died of disease near Boulogne, France on 12 February 1917. Gustav Hall Bohrsmann (enrolled 1885) became a medical practitioner. A specialist in skin diseases, he spent two years in China studying tropical medicine, beri-beri and leprosy. He was an unsuccessful candidate at the Legislative Assembly elections, 1913. Albert George Corbin (1885-1888) became Medical Superintendent of Sydney Hospital, 1903-1906. Finally, the last surviving Castlereagh Street pupil, Peter Archibald Smith, died on 29 September 1983, at the age of 105, co-incidentally just two days short of the School’s centenary, and over 92 years after his original enrolment in 1891. Peter had pursued a career in the Presbyterian Church, entering the ministry in 1905 and becoming Moderator of the Presbyterian Assembly of NSW, 1940-1941.

Ski Team News Our Ski Team returned safely last Sunday from a superb week of skiing, snowboarding, racing and socialising in the snow. Weather conditions on the mountain were, at times, extreme but fresh powdery snow was plentiful and all participants made good use of it. I commend the team for their exemplary conduct, initiative and good sense during the week and I thank boys, their parents, the Committee, my colleagues Mr Andrew Fuller and Mr Serdar Bolen and numerous members of the wider school community for their sterling efforts in support of the venture this year. Statistics on our individual and divisional performances in the races can be viewed at . It is anticipated that winners of our Fundraising Raffle will be notified by the end of this week.

DR WHO MEETS CAECILIUS !! The Doctor (David Tennant), a time traveller, is currently travelling with a female companion Donna Noble ( Catherine Tate ), moving through time and space in the Doctor’s machine, a Tardis (Time and Relative Dimension(s) in Space). The Doctor believes he has arrived in first century Rome after an earthquake. He realises he has materialized in Pompeii on 23rd August 79 AD, on the eve of the eruption of Vesuvius, even though he was warned to set his watch for the day after. When he gets back to his Tardis he discovers that it has been sold to Lucius Caecilius Iucundus, played by Peter Capaldi. At Caecilius’ home, the Doctor and Donna meet his wife, Metella (Tracey Childs), his son, Quintus (Francois Pandolfo), Evelina (Francesca Fowler), who is to be inducted into the Sybilline Sisterhood (a secret society), his prophet daughter (a character created for the episode).
Though they try to go under the alias of Spartacus, the Doctor and Donna are identified by the
future sight of Evelina and the local augur Lucius Petrus Dextrus (Phil Davis). The Doctor,
disturbed by their knowledge of his and Donna’s personal lives and by Lucius’
commission for a strange slab of marble, decides to investigate as Donna reveals the future of
Pompeii to Evelina, whose arm has mysteriously turned to stone, an act that seems to be related

As I’m sure you all know, volunteer help in our canteen is vital to ensure
