High Notes, Vol 9 No 21, July 04 2008

From the Principal
High Talent
Well done to Alvin Leung and the SRC bus committee for securing the
agreement of Sydney Buses to run a 0730, 610 service from Central on school day mornings. I trust
this bus will be packed with High boys each day. Congratulations to Zid Mancenido who was runner
up in the Trinity Oratory Competition. Congratulations to Leo Lou (Year 9) for his second place
in the What Matters? writing competition. Muhamed Mehmedbasic (Year 12) performed
‘stunningly’ in the finals of the Kuringai Philharmonic Orchestra Competition last
Saturday.
End of Term
I would like to thank all staff, parents, students and friends of High
for their support during the busiest term of the year. There were many notable accomplishments
during the term and a very long list of school sponsored or organised activities. None of these
worthwhile events could happen without a lot of hard work. It is always inspiring to me as your
Principal to experience the enthusiasm and commitment demonstrated by those people who so
untiringly support our boys in their endeavours.
The Phillip Day Memorial Scholarship 2009
Applications are invited from students in
all Years 7-11 for the inaugural Phillip Day Memorial Scholarship. The Scholarship has published
criteria and an application form. Prospective applicants should read the criteria and decide if
they wish to download the application form and apply. Applications must close on July 31. The
value of the Scholarship for 2009 will be $1200. The panel making the decision is expected to
need a considerable lead time. The Scholarship winner may not be announced until February 2009
when all prospective enrolments have been finalised and students have officially enrolled in the
school. All current students who feel they meet the criteria are invited to apply. Visit the
school website .
125th Anniversary Cabaret
This is the major celebration event of 2008. Working with
a Joint Committee, SBHS and SGHS have organised an Anniversary Cabaret for November, 21, 2008. We
invite you to come along to share in the festivities at Randwick Racecourse, the Shannon Room of
the AJC Function Centre. As advertised in High Notes and the High Flyer, we see this event as a
great opportunity for the two schools to recognise the wonderful heritage of public education
established by SBHS and SGHS. Be wined, dined and entertained, 7-12 pm. High supporters from all
walks of life will be there. Why not make up a table with your P & C Committee or Year Group?
Let us celebrate a very significant milestone in public secondary education in style. Our in
school contact is Ms Louise Graul, 93616910.
Assembly Policy
The Executive has endorsed a change of policy in respect to
assemblies. The default position will be that the MICs of sports and co-curricular activities
will introduce teams at school assemblies. If the captains of teams have submitted their speeches
48 hours before the assembly; and had them read and approved by the Principal; and have filled in
the assembly speakers liability form; and have guaranteed to read only the speech as edited and
approved by the Principal, then the MIC of the activity may relinquish their place at assembly in
favour of the qualifying captain.
School Prefect Internships
The Executive has decided to amend the policy in respect
of the Prefect System at High. The Electoral College will be retained but the Year 10 component
will have a calculated vote with a weighting of less than one per student. At the conclusion of
the nominating and voting process, students elected as School Prefects will serve an internship.
The internship will commence officially when the Prefects Elect are issued with their temporary
badges in October. In June of 2009, there will be a confirmation assembly to reward those
internees who have served the school according to the precepts of the Prefects Oath. The
successful Prefects will sign the Prefects Register, have their picture taken and be issued with
a commemorative Prefects badge which is theirs to keep. Henceforth, the office of School Prefect
at High will not be considered as a sinecure for those with previous service to the School but as
an accountable office with roles and responsibilities and benchmarks to be met. Prefects Elect
who do not measure up to the standards set will simply not be formally inducted in June at the
assembly.
Workplace Giving
In response to a request by a parent, I have set up a
‘workplace giving’ facility on the school’s website. The path is . In essence, the concept is that by
mutual agreement in the workplace, workers may make specific, periodic donations by the salary
sacrifice method, to a designated gift recipient. They use pre-tax dollars to make the gift and
do not require a receipt, nor do they make a claim for a tax deduction. Sydney Boys High has four
funds with that status as well as the Australian Sports Foundation donation scheme. Employers
have responsibilities under the scheme to deduct fortnightly or monthly amounts from
employees’ salaries and to adjust Group certificates accordingly at the end of the
financial year to reflect the quantum of the annual gift.

̽»¨ÊÓƵ Cadet Unit
New Senior Under Officer
Congratulations to Anthony Ho on his promotion to
Cadet Under Officer and appointment as Senior Under Officer-̽»¨ÊÓƵ Cadet Unit.
Anthony received his new badges of rank from Major Jeff Page, Officer Commanding, 23rd Army Cadet
Battalion in front of a mass parade of all cadets of the Battalion at Holsworthy. Best wishes to
Anthony in his new role as the senior member of the Unit.
Taking up CUO Ho’s old position as Company Sergeant Major is SGT Denis Stojanovic.
New Staff Member
The Unit welcomes back old boy William Clegg. Following the
lengthy selection and training process Mr Clegg has been posted to SHSCU with the rank of Second
Lieutenant and appointed Unit Training Officer.
Mr Clegg has a distinguished record as a cadet with SHSCU having reached the rank of CUO and
being awarded the Colonel Duffy Sword in his final year at school.
We look forward to 2LT Clegg taking up his new position as Training Officer (although we have to
wait a week or two while he completes a walk of the Kokoda Track).
Unit Promotions
A range of promotions from corporal to warrant officer class two are
due for announcement within the next two weeks. We have a good number of candidates who have all
qualified at recent Brigade courses.
125th Anniversary
A unit committee is hard at work planning a host of celebrations
to mark the 125th anniversary of the raising of ̽»¨ÊÓƵ Cadet Unit.
Activities in the planning stages include: a ceremonial parade at the School with a high ranking
reviewing officer, a guard mounting at the Cenotaph in Martin Plaza, a formal dinner in
the Great Hall and a commemorative rifle shoot with the ̽»¨ÊÓƵ Rifle Club -
students of School history will recall the Rifle Club was first formed by Cadet Unit members in
1883.
The Formal Dinner will be held in the Great Hall on Friday 14th November 08 and all
ex unit members are invited. The Mess Committee will be issuing invitations shortly and tickets
will be available from the School.
Further 125th Anniversary news to follow is the weeks ahead.

From English
Congratulations to the 40 Year 12 students who participated in the excursion to Harlos
Productions ‘King Lear’ at the New Theatre on Saturday. These students proved that it
is possible to be sufficiently organised during assessment weeks to be able to include time for
an afternoon’s close study of a core text which will enhance their understanding of course
requirements and improve their results in this part of the Advanced course. It was an engaging
and entertaining performance. After the play, the director, David Ritchie made himself available
for an extended question time. Ms Ayre, Ms Barry and Ms Eggleton were gratified by the enthusiasm
of our students and by the quality of questions which reflected insight and understanding. They
certainly provoked the director into detailed analysis of his production which is exactly what we
wanted. Great work, boys! It was a worthwhile experience for all of us.

From Robyn Meakin
TO ALL MY FRIENDS AT HIGH
My sincere thanks to all who attended my farewell
gathering held in the beautiful courtyard at High. It was one of the most memorable days I have
experienced and one I will always treasure.
As the afternoon unfolded I could see just how much time and effort had gone into its planning.
The flowers and gifts so carefully chosen, students with music for my pleasure (a treat I will
always remember) and a circle of beautiful people with whom I shared my afternoon. It was special
just as you too, dear friends, will always be – a beautiful memory.
Many thanks to everyone involved in organising my wonderful afternoon.
Love always

OBU: Did You Know?
Did you know that Nye Perram (1986), whose appointment to the Federal Court of Australia was
announced last week, is the youngest person to be appointed to the Federal Court?
122 judges have been appointed to the Federal Court in the 30 years since its foundation in 1977.
Seven percent of them attended Sydney High. The first old boy to be appointed was John Gallop
(1947) who served 1978-2000.
In August, Nye will join fellow Old Boy Peter Jacobson (1961) on the bench.

Hard Hit outs at the Hill
Travelling up to the hill to play St Joesph’s
College is a great experience for any Rugby player. The privileged High teams were greeted with
the best opposition a school can offer, and faced some challenging games, yet being gallant in
defeat or victory. Solid games were played by the 2nd XV and the 16Bs, with the juniors showing
great improvement all the time. Parents of both schools were impresed with the conduct on the
day.
The 2nd XV matched it with the Joeys 6th grade in all aspects of the game, and often bettered
them in the backs. The 16s and 15s showed great determination against brutal Joeys outfits. The
1sts were simply out matched in every facet, but held their heads high, despite a tough game. The
13As played a respectable loss against a more experienced Joey’s team.
Team of the Week: 16As- Did the school proud playing against a freakishly talented Joeys
side
Player of the Week: Calum Martin 2nd/1st XV - ran riot in the 2nd XV, and made crucial
tackles in the 1sts
Coach of the Week: Serdar Bolen 15s- Challenging the 15As by playing them against Joeys As
for the first time.
Supporter of the Week: Jonah Petrie
1st XV (Opens) Report:
The boys ran into the match undeterred, eager to chance
themselves against the best opposition. The boys played with courage and heart and to the final
whistle but the Joeys boys out muscled us, outpaced us, out skilled us and were a great side to
play, gracious and modest in victory. Our best players were Michael Denny-Smith, Ben Palau in his
fearless runs and Matt Ling, a true brother who came just because he could not let his team-mates
down despite being faced with the death of a family member only hours prior.

sustained against Grammar and a corked thigh against Joeys. Robert is looking forward to
increasing his bench press, Squat and deadlift in order to improve his game. He is also sprinting

Age Group Reports
2nd XV (Opens): The 2nd XV started positively against Joeys and it wasn’t long till
barnstorming front rower Timothy Li barged over to level the score at 5-5 early in the first
half. High looked destined to open the floodgates but things didn’t click, as Joeys scored
a couple of lucky tries to secure a hard earned 22-5 win.
16s: The 16Bs played a well structured game placing the Joeys team under constant
pressure. Big tackles and innovative play led to a very tight and exciting game. The mighty Bs
went down fighting 10-7. Outstanding performances by Daniel Morgan and Justin Hajj were noted.
15As: Within the first five minutes Joeys had scored three tries. We all realised that the
match would be a lot harder than we had anticipated. At the half it was 38-0. Through the second
half Joeys continued to dominate in all aspects of play. Potential tries were stopped due to
fantastic hits by Leon Li, as well as strong runs by Frank Li and a solid first game for our new
halfback Shimon Danziger, who was quick to every ruck. With five minutes to go it was 76-0,
however, the boys kept their heads up and fought hard right till the final whistle. We will
continue to train throughout the next few weeks and hope that the result of our next game is much
more promising.
14s: No match reports submitted. Reports to be submitted to

after each game.
13s: The 13As had a decent game, but were beaten by a much better drilled St Josephs team.
Julian was a tackling powerhouse and Max was also great defensively. The highlight of the game
was probably Edward scoring an almost full field try.
