High and SHSOBU In the second half of the year the OBU will be in a position to accept payments from new and existing members of the scheme and will make contact with all known stakeholders with current contact details.
GPS Heads Meeting Several models were tabled about how the seasons of athletics and rugby would run. There is no immediate likelihood that CAS schools will change back so the issue of traditional fixtures and trial games is a concern. Dialogue with ISA and CAS Heads was recommended. It was also recommended that May 17 should be booked for the Athletics carnival in 2008. It was agreed that the Head of the River regatta will be held on Wednesday, 19th March, 2008. The Heads are seeking advice from the AAGPS on the timing of the races on that day. The rugby arrangement with St Gregory’s College is to extend to the 2007 season.
End of Term ArtefactsTerm 1 has been a very busy creative term. First off the Art staff extend a warm welcome to Mrs Jocelyne Isaacs who has recently joined the Visual Arts staff. The Year 8 excursion to the Art Gallery of NSW and the Gardens was a great success and will become a permanent fixture on the art calendar. A big thanks to the students who behaved in an exemplary fashion and all of the teachers who assisted. Students saw the Archibald, Sulman and Wynne Prizes, the Manga exhibition displaying the master Tezuka’s work [of Kimba and Astro Boy fame] and Art Express. With an hour in each show it was a pretty long time without a break and the boys handled this with admirable control, remaining on task. The Study day and exhibition viewing at the AGNSW for Years 9 to 12 Visual Arts students was excellent. The lecturer articulately explained the cultural background to Tezuka’s “Astro Boy” and “Kimba” providing excellent comparisons to the American Superhero of the same era and enlightening students about the impact devastation and loss had on the psyche of the Japanese after the atom bomb. Year 10 Art students have been producing small scale sculptures in a range of materials exploring the different starting points and catalysts for artists. They are now working on an individual work in their choice of materials that expresses movement and rhythm. The work being produced is varied from a chandelier made from agapanthus flowers to constructions out of found objects to carved hebel or modelled clay Years 10 and 12 have been to College of Fine Arts to view Art Express works at that venue and look through the VAPDs of strong Art students. Year 12 returned feeling confident and reinspired. The excursion to the AGNSW on the 27th further reinforced the necessity to JUST get started and allow their body of work to take shape and to take risks with techniques. I have every confidence that this year’s art HSC students will produce some amazing work. Two Year 10 students, Shane Ponraj and Neil Street, attended a Gifted and Talented art workshop “Rocks On” and met Ben Quilty, artist recently featured in Spectrum, who judged the works and selected works to be exhibited. Congratulations to Shane for his Highly Commended award and first artist group show which opens on the 28th March in the city. Year 11 Digital Imaging students have mastered PhotoShop and the digital camera and have produced their first portfolio of 10 photographs. These will be exhibited in the last few weeks of term in the main foyer. Year 9 art students have launched into a study of The Body in Art. They have begun to investigate how the human figure is represented in traditional and contemporary art practices. In historical studies students are learning about style characteristics and ideas about beauty, death, changing values, identity, transformation and their world. In artmaking students are developing their skills in drawing using a range of materials including ink, progresso, charcoal, pastels and oil paint sticks. The focus for their drawing task is to experiment with materials and develop techniques whilst exploring ideas of scale and proportion in the ideal human figure. The theme for Year 7 Art students is Fears and Fantasies. Students have recently been given their first art assignment. Their progress/interim reports will be completed by teachers as they mark these assignments.

Match Report Third Grade High 4½ b Grammar 1½ Fourth Grade High 3 Grammar 3 Fifth Grade High 4 b Grammar 2 Sixth Grade High 6 b Grammar 0 What a perfect finish to the 2007 competition with High winning seventeen matches against Grammar! All players are to be commended for their sportsmanship and their impeccable court manners during this season. Third Grade High won both doubles matches, with Danny Fu / Daniel Chim winning theirs 6:4 and James Pham / Amadeus Klocker easily defeating their opponents 6:2. James Pham’s strong performance this season continued and he won his singles match 6:3. Amadeus Klocker despite the heat played well, taking his singles 6:4. Danny Fu played some beautiful tennis and was unlucky indeed to lose his singles in a tie breaker (5:7). Daniel Chim had to settle for a draw after time out.

Sixth Grade Letters Re Absence/Lateness/ Early LeaveWhen your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required. If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Beringer, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school.

Marching Band 2007 Rehearsals are progressing well with boys showing great commitment to marching and practising their music. They are starting to shape into a great ensemble and will be wonderful ambassadors for the school on ANZAC Day. The Music Committee has purchased special marching band equipment – 4 ultralight marching snares and harnesses, marching cymbals, and an untralight set of quad drums with harness. We would like to thank the Music Committee for their support of this important school and community service. Uniform required on ANZAC Day (Wednesday 25th of April 2007) will be:
There will be an extra rehearsal for all students on Wednesday 4th of April from 7:30 -10:30am at school. All music must be memorised before this rehearsal as this is the final run through before the March.

All you medium and long distance runners who want to run GPS Athletics, or train for Cross Country, we have a couple of training options available for you this year. Note the new venues! It's highly recommended that you do some training now. You'll be fitter and more competitive come GPS, and you'll be more likely to make the GPS team. Training will be with accomplished coach Sean Williams () who takes a squad of competitive athletes at either McKay or Queens Park. He will give you a program and guide you with your training. I myself have trained with Sean while at school and since and can vouch for his effectiveness.

The news from the World Cup looks promising for Australia and it really does illustrate the level at which these players have to reach to be a part of that team. From a whitewash by the Kiwis in the One Dayers to the regroup and concentration on doing the basic things right illustrates the commitment needed to be the best. High over the years has produced some talented cricketers and this season we have again recognized this in our ranks, but have we achieved reaching the best we could be, or have we accepted second place? From the same World Cup Tournament came the sad news of the death of a well respected coach which in sport must remind us that whether we play any game, avidly support our sons in sport, or are avid supporters of our national teams that in the end it is only a game! The result in the 6th XI game brings us back to reality as my nomination as the Team of the Week. Congratulations to a scratch team that undertook a 2 day fixture at season’s end and for the calibre of lads who represented High. They unashamedly admit they’re not the top cricketers in the school but enjoy their cricket and to Eugene Stadnik, Farhan Uddin, Ricky Ratnayake, Dominic Bowes, Daniel Campion, Patrick Locke, Hari Bhrugubanda, Lachlan Brown and Matthew Wong (on day 1) take a bow, you have done us proud. The report herein makes interesting reading Finally another group who deserve our recognition is four Under 14 teams. On Saturday last they completed a clean sweep of the GPS Under 14 competition. The 14As with a first inngs win, the 14Cs with a 10 wkt win, the 14Ds with a 4 wkt win and the 14Bs in a draw when rain stopped play and the team Captain Krishan Sivayogaryan, claiming a “win” in an urgent email Saturday night under the Duckworth Lewis System. 1st XI (day 2) High at 9/183 on day1, added 11 runs on day 2 before the innings finally closed. Scots then commenced the chase and at 5/180 with 2 new batsmen at the crease, High were still optimistic if it could take another quick wicket that they could pull off a win. At 8/192 we were still in it but some dogged batting saw Scots pass High’s score to finish at 226 losing their last 5 wkts for 36 runs. Tom Castleton 4/20 and Dakshika Gunaratne 3/33 toiled all innings to share the bowling honours.
2nd XI (day 2) In a tense and tough battle spectators, umpires and players were totally involved in this match as late as the last hour when SCOTS scratched their way past High’s total, let off the hook through dropped catches at crucial times. Wicket takers Matthew Coutts 3/42, Varan Perananthan 3/28 and Daniel Simpson 2/25.
3rd XI (day 2) Wicket takers Roshan Karunaratne 3/14, Shiva Seth 3/47, Kieran Taylor 2/35, Sascha Karunaratne and Andy Liu one wicket each. Run scorers Roshan Karaunaratne 65(retd.hurt), Andy Liu (12),Shreyas Iyer (11), Damien Tse (9) and Ryan Sutton (9n.o)
16A (day 2) The boys blew it with 3 wkts in hand 5 runs and 5 overs to go and rain on the horizon. Inexplicably fiddling around, the two batsmen at the wicket forgot basic running the between the wickets drills and got drenched through poor decision making at this stage in the game. It detracted from a great fight back the previous batsmen had provided. Run scorers were Avindu Vithanage (52), Hugo Richards (28) and William Lin (8).
15A (day 2) An amazing day of cricket and not without controversy on the last ball of the day from our roving reporter. High defending their overnight score set about routing Scots in both innings and pulled off a remarkable Outright victory. The destroyer flotilla was led by Brian Kelly 7 wkts, Andy Liu 6 wkts, Kieran Taylor 4 wkts, Sheijl Kumar and Daniel Morgan 1 wkt each
14A (day 2) An exciting match which demonstrated how a team reacted under pressure when having to bowl extra overs due to meeting their quota with time left to play. The lads dug deep and spent 20 minutes denying Scots the final 5 runs they needed for a win. The wicket takers were Nakul Bhagwat 3/37 (14 overs), Amman Saksema 4/57(26 overs), Saif Haque 2/25(9overs) supported by Henry Sit described as the “flying magician” in taking 2 screamers ( catches). A well deserved win. Group 2
4th XI Described as an absorbing but ultimately disappointing result for High’s surprise packet 4th XI. Batting first saw the main run scorers as Lachlan Street (24), Alistair Taylor (18) and Lachlan Deacon (19) reported as the best innings of the day, farming the tail to get the team past 100 and to give himself something to bowl at in his farewell game. The wicket takers on the day were Alistair Taylor 3/25 and Tom Lindeback and Lachlan Deacon.
6th XI (day 2) Sportsmanship came to the fore in this fixture played in the “spirit of cricket” with the scores tied with 3 balls left in the match and the opposing captain declaring the tie was the best result for the match. Grammar’s 5/123 overnight were to be all out for 141 through Patrick Locke’s bowling effort. Some enterprising batting from Daniel Campion and Ricky Ratyanake in High’s 2nd Innings saw a reversal of results from day 1 and a remarkable bowling effort from Dominic Bowes, Eugene Stadnik, Farhan Uddin and Hari Bhrugubanda created the atmosphere that provided a fitting finish.
15B Grammar won the toss and batted first and reached its total with sustained aggressive batting. However, High’s bowlers stuck to the task of dismissing batsmen regularly with Angud Chawla, Jimari Bastable and Rayan each taking 2 wkts and Ben Encel and Tim Molloy taking 1 wkt each. In reply High run scorers were Ben Encel (51), Rafat Kamal (14), David Ma (13), Angud Chawla (10) and Liam Aylmer (10)
14B On a field where 100 would have been a winning score due to the length of the grass High lost an early wkt before steadying through Samir Kinger (37) and David Chan (9) to be 1/35 at drinks. With a target of 100 in their minds the team lost wkts on a regular basis in chasing the target but achieved their goal. Other contributions were made by Abdullah Sarker, Hashan Subasinghe, Nathan Kok and Krishan Sivayogarayan a shaky start with the loss of quick wkts. The wicket takers for High were Hashan Subasinghe 3/8 (4 overs) and Shanaz Razeen 1/4 (4overs) before rain stopped play.
14C Grammar won the toss and batted and were soon in trouble and at drinks at 5/23 team members who were not regular bowlers, were offered overs which continued the loss of wkts to have Grammar all out for 40. Iftiar Khan 2/4 (4 overs)Leo Lu 1/1(4),Dominic Cheung 1/4(3) and Isaac Everleigh, Vincent Wang, Richard Li, William Shao and Vino Anandaselvakumar all taking one wkt each did the damage. Richard Li and Dominic Cheung created a 30 run opening partnership retiring so Iftiar and Vino could score the winning runs.
14D Run scorers were Kevin Krahe (26 retd), Saqib Bhuiyan (8), Tristan Xu (8), Jonson Wang (6), Vivian Lee (4), Rahib Azwad (4) and S.Undries (34). Wicket takers were Tristan Xu 3/3 (3overs), Dhruv Gupta (from 13s) 2/9 (3overs) and one wkt each to Rahib Azwad and Yasar Chowdhury. For the record, High scored 62 and Shore 60 off the bat.
