High Notes, Vol 8 No 7, March 16 2007From the Principal
P & C Sub-Committees – Events Coordination I am looking to unload this problem onto the P & C in general. Are there any volunteers?
Year 11 English Arrangements High’s HSC results over the last decade have been negatively affected overall by relatively weaker English results. We do not want that trend to continue. In 2006, we took the decision to make all boys do Extension English in Year 11. We want to raise the bar on our English standard. We also limited the English Extension 1 classes to 3 for the HSC 2006. Why?
The feedback I have received about the use of extra time in term 4, 2006 was all positive. The results of these efforts will not be known until the HSC for 2007. Nevertheless, the impact of our other literacy interventions can be seen in the Advanced English results. The mean rose by 1.38 to 83.61. In effect size (z score) the result was 0.833 which was the best English HSC result of the new HSC (2001-2006) yet with the most candidates ever (210). I am confident that while we have more to do we are heading in the right direction. For 2007, for the purposes of course qualification for 2008, students will be assessed in Preliminary English Advanced and Extension. The combined score for each student will be a mark out of 150. The top 70 boys will be offered a place in Extension 1 English for the 2008 HSC first. Thereafter, as students decline a place in the course, their places will be offered to the next highest scorers on the list. This process will continue until the target number of students is reached. I am seeking parental support for this innovation and big commitment of extra teacher time to attempt to benefit our students significantly.
Communication and Calendars
From the administration side, I have heard that people have not been vigilant in viewing the
calendar for up to 4 weeks ahead and notifying the Deputy Principals of any cancellations,
variations or modifications to the information contained in the calendar. We need to work
together to make our good systems work more efficiently. Linguistic Logistics
News from the Languages Department But the study of Languages is not only about assessments and hard work! Immersion in the target language and enrichment activities are a very important part of language learning. We expect that all students have by now paid for the excellent Workbooks issued for German, French and Chinese. The Years 8, 10 and 11/12 classes will also be issued with some exciting Language magazines in the near future. Class teachers will give you the details. Soon, the Year 7 and 8 French Classes will be entertained by Théâtre Lote, who will be presenting the famous tale of The Hunchback of Notre Dame for everyone’s enjoyment. Permission letters are going out soon to all students concerned. High wins NSW Schools Cup We began with a confidence-building victory over Christian Brothers. Oli’s barrage of jump serves went through their fingers like Terry’s spikes. Some tactical timeouts discussing “What time are we going to Maccas?” probably helped too. Next, we faced off with the team we would eventually play in the final. Vic was brutal in his attacks from front court, while Jamie’s jump serves crushed the not-so-happy receivers in the Blue Mountains team. The game was over almost as soon as it began, the one-sided score line unchanged from the game against Christian Brothers. The next game required us to dig deep. With Ritam replacing Oli in the first set against Great Lakes A, there were always bound to be problems. A six-point lead for the other team, thanks to a huge hitter on the other side who probably should’ve been playing rugby, didn’t subside until it was too late. The set was foregone by a mere three points. Oli came back on, our captain’s influence having an instant effect. The team took out the set, and succeeded in winning the following one, on the back of Alex Le’s jump serves, which were better than frozen coke. In our last preliminary match, we played Great Lakes B. Great Lakes resorted to a 5-man block in the last set to stop relentless attacks from Wei-Ping and Terry. Ritam’s jump serves were going in and the match was wrapped up in straight sets.
The Final was played against Blue Mountains grammar. Alex Le unleashed the ninja within him.
Twelve flat, hard floaters soon found themselves embedded in the chests and shoulders of Blue
Mountainers who couldn’t handle them. High won the last set by a convincing margin,
successfully defending their NSW title.
6 high players have been selected to represent Sydney East. Congratulations to Victor Nguyen,
Oliver Konakoff, Terry Ly, Alex Le, Warren Trac and Ping Du on being selected to represent Sydney
East at the NSW Inter Regional Volleyball Carnival to be held at Penrith next term. Tennis
1st Grade vs St Josephs In singles, Matt King dominated his opponent and could even afford to make a few uncharacteristic errors to win convincingly 6-3 6-2. Ivan played courageously, losing the first set 6-0, but fighting back to take the second 6-1. However, he was simply outlasted by his opponent who eventually took out the decider 6-2. Michael Prior at number 3 played some solid tennis but was not consistent enough to beat his quality opponent going down 0-6 0-6. Number 4, Ben Lee also struggled against a solid opponent and was never in control of his game, losing 2-6 1-6. Chapman played some promising tennis but consistency was yet another problem as he went down 0-6 3-6. Eddy at number 6, could not settle down and play his shots, and was unfortunate to go down 0-6 1-6. St Josephs d. High 10-2

Shooting Hoops: Basketball ReportHigh VS Joeys Term 4 2006
High VS Joeys Term 1 2007
Mr Hayman's Overview I was particularly pleased to see the 14As get a win in overtime. Their defence really stepped up a notch this week. Coach Wang did a great job helping out for the absent Coach Bose (representing Aust U19). The 14Ds and Es are on a roll! Again the 15s take a clean sweep in their age group! J Lee in the 15Ds scored 30 points! This must be a junior record! The 15Bs held Joeys to 1 point in the second half and the 15As dominated their opposition. Team of the week is the 2nd Grade. These boys played an entire game of flawless basketball. Holding their opposition to almost half their score from term 4, they executed their offence with ease. They are focused to finish the season strong. Go High Basketball! Saxby defeated Rubie 12 to 11 in Yr 10 house basketball. The game was highly intense with both teams showing quality gameplay. The crowd was deafening and it’d be nice if our home crowd for 1st grade games would be as loud too! Currently both Rubie and Saxby are on 1, if Saxby wins their next round, they’ll be in the finals!
14Ds Match Report against Knox Grammar
As the Es smashed their game by more than 40points we had high hopes just like last week. We
eventually did win with a final score of 32 - 23. The game started off with a 2 consecutive
baskets by Knox but High started cutting in on the lead with a couple of baskets by Daniel Chen.
As the first half ended, High were involved in a close game although we had the lead. During the
second half, Daniel scored consecutive baskets making a big lead although Knox had scored as
well. Just before the buzzer, High fouled Knox giving Knox a chance to close in on the lead as
the buzzer went at 32 – 22. Knox made the first free throw but missed out on the second
giving High the win with a score of 32 – 23.
14Es Match Report
We were stoked. This is our 2nd consecutive win and we’re very happy about it. The full
team was here again so we could all take a break during the game. The first half was a breeze. We
out-manoeuvred the opponent by continuously stealing the ball and scoring. Through the first ten
minutes we were ahead by over 20 points to nothing. Then the coach decided to get the starting
five off and the next group on. They did pretty well too with many passes and many shots and soon
the first half was over with the score being 46-2 or something like that! The second half was
similar to the first half. We eased up a little allowing the opponent to scrape in a few shots
because we were careless, but in the end the final score was 64-12 and we knew we had won our
second consecutive game so far. Let’s just hope we can win our next one too! Thankyou to
our coach Ms Ward for her efforts…..GO HIGH BASKETBALL!!

Last Saturday provided some “highs” and “lows” for our teams as we pitted ourselves against the might of St Joseph’s Group 2 teams and against Newington in the conclusion of round 6 in Group.1. Congratulations to the 1st XI, 3rd XI, and 14C who represented the school with distinction in our “highs” column In the “lows” column we have the same theme of dropped catches, sub-standard fielding efforts from some players, mentioned in match reports on losses. When will we learn that taking catches or stopping an extra run can lead to saving anywhere between 20-40 runs in an innings and reduces the number times of having to chase big scores when we are batting.. In the “lows” column, I feel sorry for our junior players (13s/14s) who are copping some pretty ordinary umpiring decisions from our opponents’ coaches and parent umpires as we do not have enough support at matches to do our share. Unfortunately the result is we have to cop it sweet, especially when we are closing on a victory, and receive a series of wides, no balls and lbw decisions and fall a few runs short!!. How different it could be if we had equal support at the field on match days? It’s just frustrating for the boys The AAGPS also must take some responsibility for the manipulation of the playing rules at matches by representatives of some schools as happens regularly, with too many interpretations being applied to the 30/30 match concept. Do we need to have 3 or 4 “top order” opposition players thumping their chests celebrating a 50 score or more (for mum or dad on the sideline) when 6 of their own team mates don’t get a bat? Or, do we accept that a 30 run retirement allows greater participation and is just as important in respect to learning to play and to continue in the sport of cricket? I consider the latter is what the ACB had in mind when recommending it to states and junior cricket associations, schools and colleges. I will continue to fight for this at AAGPS meetings. GROUP 1
1st XI (day 2) A deserved win after a season of underachievement by several players M Vithanage (35), Michael Coutts (26) Bowling Damitha Gunaratne 6/14 and Tom Castleton 3/15. 2nd Inngs D’arcy Blaxell (69), Matthew Fetherston (35) and Tom Castleton (21) Bowling Damitha Gunaratne 3/25 and Tom Castelton 1/18
2nd XI (day 2) No match report received
3rd XI A well deserved victory from a team that regularly is disrupted through player promotions to the 1st and 2nd XIs and rotation of players, with a hard core element binding the team together each week. The team works hard at training, does extra work after school hours and now reaps a deserved reward. Run scorers. 1st.inngs. Ryan Sutton (35n.o) and Toby Rosengarten (24). 2nd Inngs Nicholas Lochner (42), Chris Andrews (18) and Ziggy Tikisci –Harrison (16). Wickets were shared in a great team, effort by Vaibhav Sharma 3/10 (13.2), Chris Andrews 3/12 (9), Damien Tse 1/7(3), Ryan Sutton 1/25 (4) and Kevin Lam 1/40 (10).
16A (day 2) Starting with confidence and that a win was not out of the question with sensible batting High, threw it away with the loss of 2 early wickets and a generally poor batting display to capitulate and be all out for 121. Sent back in High. gained a little respect and finished the day at 4/86 avoiding an outright defeat. Batting 1st Inngs Nakul Pedneker (23), Hugo Richards(14) Avish Sharma (13) the only notable scores. 2nd Inngs Nakul Pedneker (46) and Avish Sharma (16n.o).
15A (day 2) A heartbreaking result.! High resumed day 2 at 1/25 needing 166 for 1st innings points but a batting collapse put that out of reach being all out for 107.Run scorers were Kieran Taylor (38n.o) and Shadman Ali (10) Newington decided an outright win was within their sights and elected to bat a second time and High found new energy taking 8 wkts before Newington declared at 8/75 with an overall lead of 133. Andy Liu took 5 wickets and was supported by Brian Kelly 2 wkts and Kieran Taylor 1 wkt. High began the chase with Shadman Ali making (47) and as the overs ran out Andy Liu (36n.o) and Avindu Vithanage (14n.o) were at the crease with High agonizingly 9 runs short of an outright victory.
14A (day 2) With Newington starting day 2 at 4/42 High started well in defending their total of 145 High with Saif Haque and Pasan Pannila bowling tightly to keep Newington to less than 2 runs per over. High then got the breakthrough at 56 and wickets began to fall regularly until the tail enders ground out the runs needed to pass High’s score. The wicket takers for High were Aman Saksena from Year 7 on debut, took 5/14 (11overs), Nakul Bhagwat 3/60 (15overs) and Saif Haque 0/15 (8overs) GROUP 2
14B St Joseph’s batted first and were well on the way to a huge total before the drinks break allowed High to regroup and take wickets to hold them to 7/240 at the end of their 30 overs. High then started the chase and at 4/85 were looking good but 2 wkts after a break saw us falter until the Nathan KoK (73n.o), Samir Kinger (24), Abdullah Sarker (19) and Andrew Gong (17) got together in partnerships to get High to 7/182 just 59 runs short of a win when stumps were drawn. Wicket takers for High were Hashan Subasinghe 1/43 (6), Krishan Sivayogarayan 1/31 (5), Samir Kinger 1/31 (4) and Nathan Kok 1/27 (3)
15B A disappointing result from a team which has shown improvement recently having been sent in to bat could only muster 64. The only run scorers of note being Ashwin (28) and Sameep Sandhu (13). St Joseph’s took 23 overs to score their 4/259 with Tim Molloy taking 2 wkts, Rafat Kamal and Liam Aylmer one wkt apiece.
14C Were we robbed?? St Joseph’s batted first and got away to a good start losing their first wkt at 34 but from then on lost wkts regularly to be all out for 87. Wicket takers were Botong Cheng 3/27(off 5), Dominic Cheung 2/9 (off 5) and one wkt each to Iftiar Khan, William Shao and Derek Wei. High then batted and in what can only be seen as a contrived result High’s last batsman was given out with the scores tied. Run scorers Vincent Wang (17n.o),William Shao (13), Botong Cheng (8) and Leo Li (7)
14D Inexperience in their first 20/20 match saw High win the toss and bat first but were tied down for too many overs without scoring runs until Vivian Le (19) started to hit out with contributions from Kevin Qian (9) and Tahmid Shahriyar (6). Poor fielding and lack of effort saw Trinity capitalize on this and they got the runs in 13 overs. Wicket Takers were Yasar Chowdhury 3/11(4) and Rahib Azwad and Vivian Le each took one wkt
13A Run Scorers were Krishnendi Dutta (33), Alexander Hughes (4) and Tian Ling (4). Wicket takers Tom Connelly, Alexander Hughes, Branavan Jeyasara and Hiram Yi each took one wicket.
13B Only 8 runs scored off the bat by High with Zafar Mohamed (4), Dhruv Sabharwal (1) and Emtiazul Hoque (1) achieving a score. The sole wicket taker was Ahdil Ansareen with 2/16 off 5 overs.
13C Run scorers Ethan Lieu (10), Wade Yang (8n.o) and Vincent Chen (4). The only wicket taker on the day was Wade Yang 1/27 and both Allen Fu and Ethan Lieu created 2 great run-outs
