Year 9 Class Submission Why is there a need for change? We think that the school would be more effective in reaching its targets and desired outcomes, enhancing its ethos and building a more cohesive student body, if incoming students had more time to adapt to our culture and to access our programs. We also believe there are educational, social and personal development advantages for students who enrol in High before Year 11. We believe that this adjustment to our enrolment policy is highly desirable because:
Return to Index English NewsOn Friday 9 March the Bell Shakespeare Company will present a program of performances to students in Year 8, 9 and 12. This is a wonderful enrichment opportunity and allows the boys to extend their appreciation of Shakespeare beyond the written text. These performances link to modules which the boys are studying this year. Year 8 will see an inventive blend of Twelfth Night and The Merchant of Venice while Year 9 will experience the darker vision of Macbeth. Year 12 will see a selection of key scenes from King Lear and Hamlet. On Tuesday 13 March the English Faculty will hold an information evening for parents of Year 11 students. Year 11 students are, of course, encouraged to accompany their parents to this evening. The purpose of this evening is to provide information about HSC English Courses in 2008 and the Preliminary requirements for entry into these courses. We anticipate commencing at 7.00 pm and concluding at approximately 8.30. We encourage you to attend and look forward to meeting you.
A special congratulations must be extended to Daniel Paperny in Year 9 who entered the Michael

for advice. Tennis Report1st Grade Tennis - SBHS vs. Newington College
D1 – 6-7 (3-7) 6-0 10-6 (WIN)
S1 – 6-1 6-2 (WIN) The High 1st Grade team travelled out to Stanmore to play a day of tennis in blistering heat against a well drilled Newington team. It was a tough ask from the outset but the High team rose to the challenge and played some of their best tennis of the season. The King/Cerecina doubles pair won a hard fought three set doubles match over a gutsy Newington number 1 pair. Chapman and Misha played well at number 2 but were outsmarted by their opponents. Eddie and Ben played some clever tennis but were not consistent enough to win at number 3.
In the singles, Matt King was once more successful hitting his opponent off the court and winning
easily in straight sets. Ivan was out-muscled by a bigger and stronger opponent at 2 and lost in
two tight sets. Ben, Misha and Chapman were all outplayed by their opponents and came out of
their matches convincingly beaten. Eddie’s match was a highlight; he played some great
tennis but unluckily lost in three sets. Sydney Boys High School Tennis ProgramIn June 2006, Sydney Boys High School had new tennis courts installed. At the same time, Tennis-Wise Tennis School were invited to take on the role of coaching the GPS Tennis Players. A program was created in order to develop players right through from Year 7 to 1st Grade. Given the nature of GPS Tennis, and the funding budget, the following coaching program was put in place:
1st and 2nd Grade
3rds – 6th Grade
15/16 As
16 As – Ds
13As, 14 As, 15 As & Bs A development squad was put in place for junior school players in order to further progress their games and this is conducted on Tuesday 3:30-4:30 pm and Wednesday 7:30-8:30 am.
This coaching opportunity is provided by the school with the support of Teachers and parents, and
in fact could not be run without this support. This opportunity is available for ALL players at
the school. For those who are not currently in any of these programs, and would like to develop
their games, PRIVATE squad and individual training may be provided at the request of any
individual, and at a discounted rate before or after school and on weekends, and may be made by
appointment by contacting Carl Nielsen on 0406 335 038. The most important health-related test is the 1.6 km run for cardiovascular endurance. Our standard Moore Park West course was used for the assessment. An assessment of 90% or better required a student to run the 1.6 km in a time of 6 mins 30 secs, approximately, depending on the age of the student. An assessment of 50% or better, required a time of between 7 and 8 minutes, depending on age. A result of 10% or less means the 1.6 km run was completed in a time greater than 9 mins 30 seconds. Each student in Years 7-9 should have a copy of their assessment schedule and results for February 2007 in their PDHPE theory books. Parents are encouraged to review their son’s results with them.
There were some outstanding performances again this semester including: Vincent Ye (7F) 6m 39s,
Al Hughes (7M) 6m 41s, Thomas Mok (7R) 6m 42s, Luke Vlatko (8.6) 5m 43s, Sam Lane (8.5) 5m 45s,

Term 1 2007
Things to note this week
Mr Hayman’s overview
16Bs Match Report
The 16Bs did not prevail over Newington this week, but the 3 game winning streak was in their
grasp. The siren blew with High losing due to a 2 point buffer, a massive improvement from when
they quadrupled us in term 4, 12-48. High’s man to man had its ups and downs in the first
term, sometimes a man was left open and a foul was drawn. Other times the defensive pressure got
to Newington, and they made mistakes allowing High a fast break. The second half saw High
switching to zone, and Newington start to pick up their inside cutting. Our defence was often too
tight for Newington which caused many resets of the ball. Fouls on High’s offence got us
easy points at the free throw but it just was not enough, and Newington was able to gain and hold
possession for the last minute. High lost 21-23. We are on the rise, go High Basketball in
2007!
14Es Match Report We had a feeling that this was going to be a good game because it was a home game. The game started with High gaining possession of the ball and scoring the first basket. Once the first half was over both teams had evened the score at 14 all. The second half was much more interesting with more adrenaline present. Sloppy defence from Newington gave the advantage we needed to get on top and we scored so many baskets that we were ecstatic. In the end, High had completely blown Newington away at a 20 point lead with the final score being 40-20. We were happy, the coach (Ms Ward) was happy that we had finally won a game by such a huge lead. I feel as though the team is getting stronger and faster than ever and we hope that we win our next game too.

Team control commences when the ball is at the disposal of the player who will be throwing the ball in. As the Referee is passing the ball, to the player he and therefore the team are in control of the ball Therefore the foul is a team control foul. Next Saturday will be an interesting conclusion to Round 6 day. There are several matches that High can win but will depend on displays of consistency from the previous week’s performance and some old fashioned grit and determination to put Newington away which has been lacking in previous rounds. Too often we have been in winning positions and the opposition teams get away from us through a poor bowling or fielding session, dropped catches and mini batting collapse after reasonable starts. At this end of the season there’s little time to listen to what you think you can do, it’s time to stand-up and be counted and prove your worth as a team member.

Cricket Dinner & Award Night
Cricket General & Committee meeting Group 1
1st XI (Day1) High batted first and lost 3 quick wickets to be 3/28 but a consolidating partnership between Madushanka Vithanage (35) and Michael Coutts (26) steadied the innings before a regular loss of wickets in the second session saw the innings close at 137. Newington then made a patient start before the High bowling attack ripped through the heart of their innings to have them 9/48 before final partnerships that took them to 77 all out. The explosive bowling display came from Damitha Gunaratne 6/14 and Tom Castleton 3/15. See Website match report.
2nd XI (Day1) No match report received.
3rd XI (Day1) High elected to bat first and at 8/89 looked in real trouble but a 40 run last wicket partnership produced what ended up as a defendable target of 129. At stumps Newington had lost 4 early wickets and are 4/42 still requiring 88 runs and High needing 6 wkts for a 1st innings victory. Run scorers were Ryan Sutton (35n.o), Toby Rosengarten (24) and Nicholas Lochner (16). Bowling for High Vaibhav Sharma 2/7 (6) and Chris Andrews 1/1 (3) were the destroyers. See Website match report.
16A (Day1) Day 2 will see High at the batting crease with all day with 65 overs to score the required 293 runs at a gettable rate of 4.5rpo to achieve a first innings win. The small boundaries on this ground should suit High’s batting line-up and with some grit and determination, patience and the ability to put the bad balls away could see this team fulfil its potential. See Website match report.
15A (Day1) Reportedly in a much improved fielding and bowling performance High was able to hold Newington to a total of 165 all out. The wicket takers were shared evenly between Andy Liu (2), Kieran Taylor (2), Daniel Morgan (2), Brian Kelly (1) and Shadman Ali with (1) wkt. High in response are 1/25 from 8 overs and have the advantage of having 65 overs on Day 2 to score 141 runs at 2.16 runs per over to achieve a first innings win. See Website match report.
14A High won the toss and batted and the openers faced a tight bowling attack that made scoring a slow process. With the first wicket going down at 19, Ryan McDonald (33) and Michael Phung (32) then put together a 70 run partnership before losing both batsmen within 2 overs. Nakul Bhagwat (10), Saif Haque (11) and Aman Saksena (10) also contributed to the final total. Day 2 will be our best opportunity to defend this score and providing we bowl consistently on a good line and length making the batsmen play, take our catches and work together in the field a win is not out of the question. See Website match report. Group 2
4th XI After some heavy work before achieving the win, High had to steady at the crease after suicide dismissals by some of the batsmen and was rescued by a last wicket partnership of 39 by Tom Lindeback (42n.o), Lachlan Street (39n.o) and Dominic Bowes (13) as the other main contributor. A sound bowling performance that included 9 of the team saw James Ip take 3/ 6 Lachlan Deacon, Amer Amin and Patrick Locke all contribute with wickets. See Website match reports.
5th XI Newington sportsmanship in question. In a match marred by scoring , umpiring and player problems and with need for a “third Umpire” from an adjoining pitch called to rule on a “run-out” as the “Home Official” was unsure of the Law, it’s a credit that our players stayed and played under “their” amended conditions. Where the score line starts and finishes became a mystery, except that High at least scored the same number of runs as Newington. In the farce of a fixture Urban Singh took 4 wkts, and Nirmal Sridharan 2 wkts. 16B, 15B, 14B No match reports received.
14C
14D A low scoring game that saw Newington score only 22 off the bat and given 20 sundries through wayward bowling by High’s bowlers. However, the efforts of Kevin Qian (10), Tristan XU (9), Tahmid Shahriyar (6n.o), Rahib Azwad (4), Vivian Le (2) and Eric Zhu (1n.o) and 12 sundries when it was High’s turn to bat led to a victory. Rahib Azwad (4/9), Tristan XU ( 2/0), Tahmid Shahyiyar (2/4), Ryan Gu (1/1) and Yassir Chowdhury (1/16) 13A, 13B No match reports received.
13C What an exciting game. High lost 2/7 early and were in trouble with a slow run rate and then it all started to happen, with many singles and sundries and finally got down to High needing 2 runs with 2 balls to go and unfortunately unable to convert. Batting for High, Kevin Krahe (30), Brian Lam (23), Harry Heo (17n.o) and Anthony Soo (6), Kenny ZHANG (4), Peter Wu (1n.o) Wicket takers were Wade Yang 2/27, Vincent Chen 1/9 and Derrick Foo caused a great run-out. A great team effort.
