High Talent
Congratulations to Thomas Hurrell ‘Question of a Clone’ and Alex Shapilsky
“Nose Job’ for their success at the HSC in visual arts. Their major works were
selected for exhibition at ARTEXPRESS – a significant achievement. Well done again to Ben
Wilcox (Year 7) who was awarded a certificate for his contribution to the Sydney Region Band.
Yiming Deng and Tom Sun (Year 11) have been invited to the Fortieth ANU/AAMT National Mathematics
Summer School to be held at ANU in January – a high honour. Congratulations, boys! James
Mackay ‘Clouds’ and Muhamed Mehmedbasic have been selected to play at ENCORE –
another high honour for the school.
Lak Saviya Foundation – Year 10 Project
Representatives from the Lak Saviya Foundation visited last week to report on how the $3500
raised by Year 10 boys would be spent. The Foundation has been active in 2007. So far, solar
electricity systems have been installed in 150 rural homes by the Foundation. Our contribution
was for two homes for students who attend the school we sponsor. We have also sponsored IT
classes in our companion school to train students to be able to converse with us over the
internet. We will help with a dehumidifier to maintain a reasonable humidity level in the room
where the computer hardware is located at the school. The Foundation would like a small group of
6-8 students, preferably from Sri Lankan or Indian background, to be the first group to make
contact with our companion school. The Foundation delivered 15000 books for a library. It
supplied a blood analyser machine for a cancer ward at a local hospital. It has commenced a
sponsorship program to educate 20 children, from donations of $10/month/child. We value our
connection with this organisation with its slogan: “Helping the needy to help
themselves.” I hope that next year, Year 10 will see the value of developing our
relationship with the Lak Saviya Foundation and will raise even more money to help make a
difference in the lives of those who have so little compared to us.
Reports
Now that the Year 10 Placement Tests are over, I am discussing reports with students in Years 7,
8 and 10, once they have completed their Clearance Forms. From Tuesday, I will be issuing reports
to Year 9 boys. I expect all boys should have their reports by December 14. Please ask your son
for his report.
Visual Arts Exhibition and Thank You Reception
Students and their parents are invited to attend our annual exhibition of student artwork on
Tuesday, December 11, from 6pm. The Creative Arts staff work really hard with the boys each year
to set up the exhibition. I hope you can come along to see your son’s work. This year we
will have some special musical performances as well. Catering is usually arranged by the Sailing
Committee with refreshments supplied by the P & C.
The Record
Thanks to the great work by editor Mr Bigelow, Assistant Mark Gainford, school photographer Jenni
May, Loraine Molloy and a host of helpers, The Record 2007 is at the printers and will be ready
for distribution before the end of the school year. This production is grander than ever before
with extra colour pages of photographs and more sports reports. I want to thank all those
involved for completing this project for the second consecutive year on time. Incidentally, if
any family had a son at school in 2006 and did not get a copy of the 2006 Record, Mr Dowdell has
the undistributed copies.
Five Highs Cricket Tournament
Thank you to Laurie Heil, Richard Ayre, Hugh Howey and Chris Kourtesis for their work in hosting
the Five Highs cricket Tournament at High this year. This prized event allows our elite
cricketers to compete with some of the best young cricketers in Australia. In several states,
students are chosen to go to particular schools in the basis of their cricketing ability. It is
certainly a privilege for us to be able to compete against them each year and to travel to their
cities to play. We retained the Cec Rubie Cup for annual competition against Melbourne
High.

Sydney Schools Climate Change Forum part 2
On Monday 26th November four year 9 students attended the next stage of their climate change
initiative. The training day at
Moorefield had been completed successfully and now it was the time to present their research
findings to their school colleagues at Parliament House. The first task was to introduce the
students to the workings of both the NSW Parliament and the debate that day. This large group was
soon divided into two so that debates could continue in the two legislative chambers. Despite a
somewhat polite start, students were soon adopting a more parliamentary tone with few of the
later speakers getting a clear passage to outline their arguments. It was pleasing to see our
students, mostly debaters, getting into the swing of things by creating controversial arguments
or, in one case, presenting a totally different case! It made the day very lively. After the
formal debates there was an opportunity to put more general matters of interest.
In between debates there was an opportunity to hear others in the debate give their views. Two
UNSW scientists were quizzed about aspects of the global warming debate. Mr Phil Koperberg,
Minister for the Climate Change, Environment and Water outlined his ideas and the value of
meetings such as this. Mr Coutts Trotter the current Director of the DET encouraged the students
in their efforts.
These two days are just the start of the process. The aim is to raise awareness and action about
climate change. Students have returned to school with a charter which should be seen as the first
step in reducing the environmental impact of the school. Their job is to see where and how it can
best be put into effect. Student involvement can be a very powerful motive for change and so it
will be interesting to see how this idea develops over the next few months.

School Community Art project
Do you have excess bathroom tiles you’re dying to get rid of? A small group of year 10
students will be completing the mosaic wall in the canteen courtyard hopefully before the end of
the year. Their design relies heavily on blue and yellow tiles.
If you have Blue or Yellow tiles you’d be happy to donate please leave at the Art Staff
room. We are hoping we will not need to pay for any tiles for this project.

Letters Re Absence/Lateness/ Early Leave
When your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of
explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is
also required.
If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Beringer,
Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately
after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll
class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the
Main Office before he leaves the school.
Leave
If you require leave for your son please, apply in writing and address your
application to the Principal, Dr Jaggar, stating the reason and length of time of the leave. Your
son must then present this application to Dr Jaggar for permission for the leave. Please
remember to apply before the leave and not after. The Principal must approve all leave
applications.

SHS Old Boys Union
Did you know?
Did you know that King George V instituted the Order of the British Empire in 1917, in
recognition of important services rendered to the British Empire? Since that date, over 110 old
boys of Sydney High have become members of the Order, including 5 who have been made Knight
Commanders (KBE). The first old boys to become members of the Order did so in 1919 for services
rendered during World War I: Samuel Barraclough (1889) who became a Commander of the Order (CBE)
and Ethelbert Southee (1907) who became an Officer of the Order (OBE). The School’s first
pupil, Arthur Eedy (1886) became a CBE in 1937. The most recent appointment has been James
Wolfensohn (1949) who received an honorary KBE in 1995.

Debating Parking
Saturday Dec 15TH from 5 – 8 PM
We have another opportunity to earn funds for
debating at the Sydney FC vs Perth Glory game on Saturday Dec 15th. Given the recent visit from
David Beckham, interest in soccer is very high. This should be a good night for us.
You will either be accepting money and issuing tickets or showing the drivers where to park.
There is plenty of help and support available and for those parents and boys who are new to
parking, it is good fun (much better than a cake stall).

Rowing Events
Last Saturday was the Annual Family Regatta where parents and friends were invited to have a row.
Despite the inclement weather, which seems to be a consistent trend over the last 23 years, the
regatta was well attended with over 35 parents and friends braving the conditions and having a
row. Some notable old timers and not so old timers who ventured into the boats were Helen Edgtton
and brother Adrian Vertoudakis, Paul Wormell, Denis Gorey, the Montanaro family, Julius Pfull,
Margaret Smith and the Saleh and Kite families. There were over 150 people who enjoyed the fine
food, the company and the raffles. Many thanks to the Rowing committee particularly Julie and
David Blomberg, Peter Ambrose, Katharine Deacon, Anita Bezjak, John Petrie, Cheryl Bow, Geoff
Andrews, Yvette McDonnell, for providing the catering and the senior boys, led by Robbie Chen and
assisted by Brynley Pfull, Khalid Ahmed, Clive Chen, George Denny- Smith, Dale Chen, Nathan
McDonnell, Nelson Ridges, Gareth Deacon, Andrew Blomberg, Michael Ambrose, Tim Gollan for
supervising the parent rowing.
Also on the day the inaugural GPS sculling regatta was held at Penrith. All schools sent their
top scullers to race against each other and our Captain of Boats, Daniel O’Keefe, was
ranked in the top four and notionally placed in a GPS crew. Harry Reid and Shahar Merom also
performed strongly though David Vien was injured. This strong showing gives our first VIII new
confidence for the coming racing season. Many thanks to David Luscombe and Oliver Wilson who
drove the sculling boats and rowers to Penrith at 5.30am.
Most of our crews have recently competed in Head of the Parramatta events over the four and a
half kilometres. The first year 10 VIII performed strongly as did the first VIII. The performance
in the weight room has been higher this year and the results are beginning to show. The next few
weeks, when our rivals are on holidays, are vital for our training and improvement.
The following report from junior Captain of Boats Gareth Deacon
For the past six weeks, the New Year 10 VIII's have been working hard to master the sweep-oar
technique required for senior rowing. There is definitely a long way to go, but everyone has been
putting in effort and adjusted well to the busier schedule of senior rowing. Apart from the 2nd
Year 10 VIII forcing a rivercat to stop for them, there have been no real incidents and the first
Thursday night camp went more smoothly than expected. Despite having to wake up at 5am, most
people managed to stay awake through their classes the next day. In the last fortnight, we have
been lucky enough to recruit several more rowers, bringing our total to about 35 rowers. This
added depth of numbers has allowed us to field a 3rd Yr 10 VIII for the first time in several
years.
Shed Race
Shed race is a handicap race where all crews have an opportunity to win. Free hamburgers are the
prize for the victors so it is a keenly contested event. After many years of working out the time
handicaps for the crews Mark Prater has handed the task over to Mr Gainford.
The boys have all been provided with information about holiday training by their coaches but a
summary of the January dates are in the rowing calendar. Basically the A group start early
January, B & C start on January 19 and the juniors begin on January 23.
Boat Naming Ceremony – Saturday 15th December 2007 10am
Earlier this year the Rowing Committee held a fundraising Trivia Night to try and raise money for
a much needed new VIII (boat) ….and dreams do come true because thanks to current parents
and Old Boys we actually raised almost enough to buy the VIII. We are naming the boat Dr KA
Jaggar and we would like to extend an invitation to all school community to attend the ceremony.
Morning tea will be served from 9am with the boat naming ceremony happening at 10am. This is a
very special occasion with traditional christening of the boat.

Music Notices
Annual General Meeting
The Music AGM will be held on next Monday the 10th of December 2007. We would like to invite ALL
parents of students involved in the music ensemble program to attend. The meeting will be held in
the Staff Common Room and will begin at 7pm.
SBHS Music Supporters Group
SBHS offers an impressive performance music program that caters to all levels of talent and
experience. Currently it offers percussion and string ensembles and concert and stage bands at
junior, intermediate and senior levels; a large guitar ensemble, a choral group and a symphony
orchestra. The SBHS marching band represents the school at the Sydney Anzac Day March and each
year the Great SBHS Piano Competition presents talented competitors at both senior and junior
levels. It is one of the most comprehensive music performance programs in any of the selective
schools, involving over 220 boys and reflects excellence in performance at all levels.
The SBHS Music Supporters Group (parents) provides the Music Department with both financial
and practical support to help enable them to offer this program - if your son is joining one
ensemble, or more, at SBHS we would like to invite you to join the SBHS Music Supporters
Group.
Last year, through its parking and other fundraising activities, the Group provided over $17,000
worth of instruments and music to the school, funded music workshops, scholarships for
instrumental tuition and other activities. The group also assists in organising the showcase
concerts throughout the year, including the Cabaret Night – an evening of Jazz and dancing,
and the annual Music Awards Dinner where boys are recognized for their talent and commitment to
the music program. We also provide barbeques for the boys at other music events through the year.
Being a SBHS Music Supporter does not require a huge commitment of your time. The group meets
once or twice a term, usually on a Monday night, at the school. Discussion is usually focussed on
instrumental requirements, fundraising and planning for upcoming performance events, though any
music issues can be raised. You may have experience or contacts to help our fundraising for the
music program or you may just like to attend to learn more about your son’s performance
music experience at SBHS. Members of the music staff always attend the supporters group meetings
and we try to keep the meetings short and to the point! As a supporter you may volunteer your
time once or twice during the year to assist with our fundraising parking, help on a barbeque or
assist at a performance event.

Attending Games
I heard some worrying reports from coaches that boys are not turning
up in the 15s age group. If you are not attending games regularly you need to change sports. I
have been surprised by the A grade side in particular with some poor results. Basketball requires
a GPS Saturday commitment from every player, every game. Do not let your mates down. It is your
responsibility to attend and play your best. It is my job to remove you from the program if you
do not.

R. Siva
I was fortunate enough to see R. Siva had an outstanding game in the 16Es win over Newington on
Saturday in our gymnasium. This team has improved dramatically this term. They have changed their
tactics defensively and with the organisation of Ms Reemst the team and age group have developed
a winning culture. Well done.

End of First Half of the Season
Thankyou to all the staff members, coaches and
assistant coaches, parents and supporters for this successful half-season. The future is looking
great with our 16s age group coming out with almost or even clean sweeps from the weekends.
There’s also our 15s team that went to the state finals grabbing a convincing second place.
This has only been possible with all the effort they have been putting in. Special thanks must go
to our MIC Ben Hayman for all the effort he has put into the reformation of the basketball
program.
15 Es MATCH REPORT Against Newington
A perfect last match for this term is the way
most would describe our victory. The game was filled with fun, rejections, 3 pointers and we won.
High completely focused on having as much fun as possible. The first half did not even require
much effort from the starting five and there were constant subs but High still lead 8-0 for a
period of time before Newington managed to shoot a free throw in. The score at half time was 12-1
but 4 minutes into the second half the score was 18-1 before Newington scored from a lay-up.
Although Newington scored we continued to try taking 3 pointers and difficult shots to maximize
the amount of fun. At last the game ended 22-3 and every single player was smiling. Special
mentions just have to go to whole team for everything they did and hopefully next term we can
have more games like this one. Until then practice hard and let’s dominate again! David
