Music Awards Assembly "Special guests, members of the Music Committee, staff and students, welcome to our 2nd annual Music Awards Assembly. This morning’s assembly is an occasion to recognise and acknowledge the accomplishments of our performance music program participants. Music as a co-curricular activity has an elevated status in GPS schools because musical performances are integral to many assemblies, formal occasions and special events that define and build school culture. Musical performance is vertically integrated and access to ensembles is based on merit. It is a uniting activity and it provides opportunities for students to perform for an audience, which is one important reason why people learn to play instruments. Musical performance showcases the talents of our students to the wider community. Our Marching Band has built up a strong reputation at Anzac Day marches. We contribute many performers to the Combined GPS concert. Performance music is a major co-curricular activity at High. Your programs indicate the depth and breadth of musical performance opportunities at High. "Today, we are gathered to recognise again the important part that music plays in the life of our school. The number of students studying music to the HSC level has continued to be strong, with several musicians nominated for Encore. This year the school withdrew its responsibility for employing the tutors that develop the musical skills of individual performers. There were too many difficulties in communication and accountability for the school to continue. I believe we have settled into a more sustainable model for 2008 with the music staff assigning the music to be practised with tutors and a student practice log to record individual progress. Also, music staff will hear performances by students to gauge progress towards mastery of the set pieces. Hopefully, there will be a closer alignment between what the academic staff and the tutoring staff are trying to do for our students. "Thank you to the Music Staff and Ms Louise Gaul for their work in administering the music program this year. Debra Gilmore, Rita Miller and Suzanna Lim have put in a great deal of effort to support both the academic and performance music programs this year. Dr Mary Myerscough has led the Music Committee well this year with the help of treasurer, Anne Aylmer. An expensive instrument has been added to our inventory of instruments available for use by students. I thank the Music Committee on your behalf for their support. A special thank you to the P & C for their recent donation of $15,000 to replace our two upright pianos that have served as work horses in rooms 101 and 201 for a generation. Room 101 has been set up with PCs to accommodate digital composition by students. Once the software is fully operational, students will have much greater power to compose and hear their digital compositions. The software should enable our boys to improve their compositions and hence lift their academic music outcomes. "High produces many good musicians and the purpose of the assembly is about honouring their efforts. I congratulate those boys being recognised today and urge them to continue their efforts in musical training and performance. "
Communication Issues Did you know?
Did you know that the High Court of Australia was established in 1903? Since that date, one old
boy of Sydney High and one teacher have been appointed to the final court of appeal in Australia.
Lionel Murphy (1940) was a Justice of the High Court, 1975-1986; Albert Bathurst Piddington
(teacher: 1883-1891) was appointed a Justice on 6 March 1913, but resigned in controversial
circumstances before taking office on 5 April 1913. Piddington was also a Vice President of the
Old Boys’ Union, 1892-1894. Sydney Schools Climate Change Forum
Climate change is one of the most important issues facing us today. Not only do we need to
consider how we respond to this we need to ensure that we can manage this sustainably. As part of
the climate change initiative, the DET set up a ‘Sydney Schools Climate Change
Forum’. The idea is that a school version of the Kyoto Protocol is debated by students and
that this then goes back to their schools to form the basis for future action. It’s a
two-part process with the first part, a training day, held recently. Three students from year 9
– Max Phillis, Puneet Baweja and Tadeusz Davenport were invited to represent the school at
this session. The aim was to discuss the draft Protocol and to see what changes were needed. It
was also an opportunity to see how other schools were responding to these issues. It was a busy
but very interesting day. As a final reminder, we were given two tree saplings which would reduce
the carbon emissions our journey produced (although it was by public transport so a lower figure
already!); these will be planted in the school grounds. The next day is a formal debate at the
NSW Parliament House. Change of dates for Year 10
The Year 10 Mathematics and English Preliminary Course Placement Exams have been moved to
Wednesday 5 December. The last day for Year 10 boys will be the day on which their School
Certificate grades are received. At this stage it is expected that boys will receive their School

Exhibition and P&C end of year event. This year we are thrilled to have three of the five
students nominated for encore perform throughout the evening accompanied by the award winning

September 2007 SBHS Music Supporters Group SBHS offers an impressive performance music program that caters to all levels of talent and experience. Currently it offers percussion and string ensembles and concert and stage bands at junior, intermediate and senior levels; a large guitar ensemble, a choral group and a symphony orchestra. The SBHS marching band represents the school at the Sydney Anzac Day March and each year the Great SBHS Piano Competition presents talented competitors at both senior and junior levels. It is one of the most comprehensive music performance programs in any of the selective schools, involving over 220 boys and reflects excellence in performance at all levels. The SBHS Music Supporters Group (parents) provides the Music Department with both financial and practical support to help enable them to offer this program - if your son is joining one ensemble, or more, at SBHS we would like to invite you to join the SBHS Music Supporters Group. Last year, through its parking and other fundraising activities, the Group provided over $17,000 worth of instruments and music to the school, funded music workshops, scholarships for instrumental tuition and other activities. The group also assists in organising the showcase concerts throughout the year, including the Cabaret Night – an evening of Jazz and dancing, and the annual Music Awards Dinner where boys are recognized for their talent and commitment to the music program. We also provide barbeques for the boys at other music events through the year. Being a SBHS Music Supporter does not require a huge commitment of your time. The group meets once or twice a term, usually on a Monday night, at the school. Discussion is usually focussed on instrumental requirements, fundraising and planning for upcoming performance events, though any music issues can be raised. You may have experience or contacts to help our fundraising for the music program or you may just like to attend to learn more about your son’s performance music experience at SBHS. Members of the music staff always attend the supporters group meetings and we try to keep the meetings short and to the point! As a supporter you may volunteer your time once or twice during the year to assist with our fundraising parking, help on a barbeque or assist at a performance event. GPS Round 3: Volleyball
1st Grade Wins NSW All Schools Cup A skeleton crew of 6 players made up the 1st grade team. Jamie and Weiping did a good job in the middle but without our tall blockers the going was tough. Cumberland and Blue Mountains Grammar were beaten in straight sets but a pumped up Great Lakes SC team were determined opponents and took the preliminary match with an energetic display of quality volleyball. With a win in the playoffs, High made it to the Final to meet GLSC again. With a modified strategy using more right side attack and the inclusion of Stephen Dong from the 17s team, High reaffirmed control to claim the gold medal. The 17s were unlucky to miss out on a berth in the final and finished 3rd. The 16s were also missing key players and did well to finish 4th.
The 3 teams depart for the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup next month. The AVSC is held in
Melbourne from the 9th to the 14th of Melbourne. A record number of over 400 teams from Australia
and New Zealand have entered this year’s event. Rowing NewsThe Rowing Calendar which is available on the school website under summer sport, Rowing is reprinted below. The major coming events are the junior Head of the Parramatta this Saturday for Years 9 & 10 rowers, the family Regatta day where all members of the school family are welcome to come to the sheds and have a row, the GPS sculling regatta where for the first time the top four scullers from each school will compete against each other and the naming of the new VIII Dr K A Jaggar. The following is a report from the Captain of Boats 2008, Daniel O’Keefe. The senior A rowing group (first and second eights) have been training since term 2 with weekly Sunday sculling sessions. Training picked up during the athletics season and in the holidays there were preliminary selections for the A and B (fours) groups. Since then all crews have been working hard under a schedule consisting of single sculling, crew rowing in eights or fours and regular weights sessions. The first eight is under the tutelage of Head Coach Oliver Wilson. George Barris and Dave Luscombe are guiding the second eight. James Gerofi is heading the fours program and Fin Murray is providing help across the board. Jason Tassell is in charge of the weights program. Two weeks ago on Wednesday the A group selections took place at SIRC (Sydney International Regatta Centre) The gruelling selection consisted of multiple scull race over 1500 and 2000 metres. The day ran smoothly due to the hard work of Head Coach Oliver Wilson, Mr Barris and Mr Daish. It was a tough day for all involved and there were many hard races. The crews selected are as follows in order from stroke to bow, the preliminary second eight Rob Chen, Clive Chen, Tom Harvey, Jack Wachsman, Jason Nguyen, Khalid Ahmed, Roy Chen, Alex Belokopytov coxed by Pravin Radhakrishnan. The preliminary first eight is as follows again from stroke to bow, Daniel O’Keefe, David Vien, Mitch Kelly, Harrison Reid, Brynley Pfull, Shahar Merom, Christopher Andrews, Mathew Ling coxed by Patrick Desmond.
The racing season got off to an early start with the Head of the Parramatta race this last
Saturday. A 4.5 km time trial the race in reality was treated as more off a training row than a
competitive race. The first VIII raced with a rating cap as per Head Coach Wilson’s master
plan. Despite the deliberate handicap the eight managed to finish close to many of the other
crews, a good sign of things to come. The senior rowing group now have our biggest training month
ahead of us as we seek to build for December selections. Student Awards Scheme Closing Dates

~Brought to you by Johny Shih High Cricket BulletinResults Statistics may be good for bean counters but in sport they can completely mislead you when people make judgments based on them. When we look at last Saturday’s results, the win loss ratio is below the starting results we achieved in the Trial matches and round 1 with the teams in Group 1. However conversely what doesn’t show up is the efforts of the teams on the field with bowling, catching and fielding let alone consistent performers with the individual achievers all of which contributes to a successful combination. Unfortunately we are not all putting it together at the one time, but the mood is growing more confident and teams now believe they are competitive and can win. The 15As in point, were 4-14 chasing the Shore’s total of 3-174 when their quota of overs was up, falling just 26 runs short of victory, whilst the 15Bs scored 195 for the loss of 9 wickets and bundled Riverview out for 106.Not to be outdone the 15Cs batted first and finished at 7-88 and then rattled through Newington’s line up to have them all out for 76. What do the scores tell us? The result!! Other than that it is the feedback from coaches, managers and captains that indicate where our weaknesses are AND THAT leads us to the need for frank Match Reports that highlight where we fell down on the day. When this happens and we know “6 catches were dropped” we can address it at sport training sessions the following week.

CD Launch “Stop Scratching It” The Spooky Men's Chorale, a 17 strong Blue Mountains based all-bloke vocal ensemble who have taken their messages of tool sheds and male bonding to the wider world, will launch their new CD “Stop Scratching It” on Friday, 7 December 2007. Spooky Men have chosen the The Great Hall @ Sydney Boys High as a venue with sufficient "grandeur" to unveil their formidable repertoire. They have performed to capacity audiences at major Australian festivals and have twice toured the UK extensively, with appearances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and to legions of devoted fans at festivals across the UK. Spooky Men have gently savaged the conventions of cappella singing with a musical ethos inspired by the great men's choirs from the ex-Soviet republic of Georgia and include songs by Casey Chambers, Abba, Joni Mitchell, Queen, the Rolling Stones, Hilaire Belloc as well as songs about male preoccupations - power tools, sheds, domestication and facial hair - penned by the Chorale's leader and Spookmeister, Stephen Taberner. For our continuing volunteers Cricket: Attention all ParentsThe Australian Five Highs Cricket Carnival will be held in Sydney from December 3 to December 7, SBHS are hosts this year. There will be 52 Boys coming from interstate that will require billeting for 5 nights. The boys will be playing cricket all day and basically need somewhere to sleep along with an evening meal. Tax Deductible 125th Anniversary Project We have a bold vision for a two stage Library & Performing Arts Centre. With advances in information technology, there is a pressing need to create a facility which is able to adapt and keep pace with meeting the increasing needs of our students. The estimated cost of the combined project is $4m. Stage one requires $1.8m; we have $400k. A new tax deductible monthly giving program has been introduced to help fund our development goal. We have implemented an arrangement with ANZ Bank for automatic monthly deductions from a nominated credit card. You can elect to give $50, $40, $30 or $20 each month for a period of twelve months. Your nominated amount, along with your name and credit card details will be sent to the bank electronically. At the end of the financial year, the school will issue an annual statement as evidence of tax deductible donations.
