High Talent
Congratulations to the first XI cricket team on a great display of
self-discipline, character and patience as they accumulated 8-150 to grab the first innings
points against St Josephs at Hunters Hill. After sticking to a game plan the previous week, the
boys bowled out Joeys for a modest total and added some useful batting practice after passing
their total on an overcast, testing afternoon last Saturday. Well done too to the 15As for a
tight 3-run victory over Joeys. Congratulations to our 15s basketball team who progressed to the
last 8 in the state after a hard fought win against Macintyre at Inverell this week.
Playground Safety
Students and their parents should be aware that playground
facilities such as the cricket nets, basketball and tennis courts have certain rules concerning
their use. The tennis courts are for use by players in the school tennis program only. They are
not for social ‘hit and giggle’ students. The courts are available for student use
before and after school and at lunch times. Students sign for a key and are responsible for
locking themselves in and having the correct attire for practising, including appropriate shoes
and equipment. The basketball courts may be used before and after school and at scheduled breaks,
but not for organised games. Shooting practice and drills are permissible but no competing with
team against team is permissible, even as social games, for duty of care reasons. With the
cricket nets the potential for injury is higher and the seriousness of injury is likely to be
higher, too. Consequently, no students are allowed to practise on the cricket nets at any time
without adult supervision. Such supervision might be provided by teachers or qualified cricket
coaches. In the recent past, students have put pressure on staff members to give them permission
to use facilities without the supervision described in the policy. I want it to be clear what the
policy is – no unsupervised practice in the cricket nets.
Students of concern interventions
I have contacted parents in all academic years
about our plans to design interventions to assist our targeted students who for whatever reason
find themselves in the statistical bottom 10% of their cohort or who have failed to meet the
academic standard that I have determined for the school. I have sought their permission for us to
interview their sons or to ask them to attend Thursday afternoon literacy development classes or
to be involved in mathematics remediation groups or to attend organised programs for their
benefit. Mr Walker, Head Teacher Student Welfare, has been very proactive in organising
professional interventions to help re-engage our boys. One such program is delivered by
Elevate Education. Stage 4 boys we are concerned about had the benefit of two recent
sessions on various skills associated with effective learning. We are proposing to design a
program with Elevate to service the targeted boys in all years in 2008. The whole objective of
our underachievement program is to re-engage our students with learning and achievement.
Year 8 Parents Issues
The Year 8 Parent Group asked some questions about school
procedures. In respect of subject acceleration, the only courses on offer are the ones listed on
the website and under our SBHS Subject Acceleration Policy. Information about meetings is
published in High Notes, incorporated into the weekly calendar for the next four weeks and
displayed d on the website calendar. Class sizes for the junior school are: Non-specialist rooms
and labs (30). Music, IA and Art in Years 7 and 8 (20). Technical and Arts electives (20-22).
Other electives up to 30. Senior classes have a maximum of 24. A boy who wanted to begin a
language as an elective would not be barred from doing so, as long as the decision was in his
best interests academically. However, he would have to discuss the proposal with the HT LOTE to
demonstrate his capacity to complete the subject successfully. There is no
‘streaming’ of classes at High except in mathematics from Years 8 to 10. There is
‘banding’ in English and science. An outrider class is selected in English and two
classes of science contain the same 30 students as in the one English class. This 30/60
arrangement works well in the junior school where success in both subjects correlates highly with
high literacy levels. Students in Year 9 are supposed to complete stage 5 work and become ready
to act and study as seniors. They are the leaders of the Junior School and we expect increased
levels of responsibility, maturity and autonomy from them. The additional students for Year 9
next year have made their electives selections and will be slotted into their classes. In
English, mathematics and science, there will need to be flexibility in allocations of students so
that newcomers can find their appropriate level where that is policy in grouping. The Student
Awards Scheme data collection system works from signed off ‘Yellow Sheets’. That data
can be corrected or amended after discussion with Mr Beringer, but only until the deadlines he
sets. Thereafter, appeals can be made to me directly. Participation data are now downloaded by Mr
Dowdell onto reports. However, data are not signed off until a season is completed successfully.
Hence long running activities or cross seasonal ones do not appear on semester one reports.
Parents and boys should remind teachers and outside coaches that such data need to be supplied to
Mr Dowdell in the format prescribed.
Interactive Games Alert
It has come to my attention that a significant number of
boys have been absorbing up to 14 hours per week of their free time, playing a never-ending,
levels based interactive computer game. These games try to hook players with participation
prerequisites, peer pressure and promises of competitive success. They are addictive. I am
concerned that boys who get involved in these rings of cyber world dwellers are missing
opportunities and normal teenage family interaction. Their academic and co-curricular
performances may also be badly affected. Parents are advised to monitor vigilantly their sons'
use of computers in the home. Teachers and Year Advisers are asked to be on the lookout for boys
who are missing out on handing in work, coming late to school, dropping out of school activities
or who appear changed or distracted or secretive about what they have been doing. They may be
involved in such game activity. The Library is another likely place for boys to get on line and
disguise their destinations or have legitimate sites running with game sites. We have an emerging
student welfare issue with online recreational games.

Catholic Church in 1937? High old boy Justin Daniel Simonds (1906) was Archbishop of
Hobart 1937-1942. As Coadjutor Archbishop of Melbourne, 1942-1963 he served as deputy to the
controversial and long-serving Archbishop Daniel Mannix, eventually becoming Archbishop of
Melbourne, 1963-1967.

Charities
The Children’s Medical Research Institute and Jeans for Genes, being a nominated SBHS
charity, are organising a new fundraiser program, Gift Wrap for a Cause. This year gift wrapping
will take place at Myer Bondi Junction, Sydney City and Parramatta from 7-24 December and at
Rhodes Shopping Centre from 15-24 December. The idea is simple – customers purchase a
Christmas item and Jeans for Genes volunteers wrap it for a small donation. Currently they are
seeking volunteers who would like to assist staff gift wrap at the above locations. This is a
perfect opportunity for students to fulfil their Duke of Edinburgh community service or receive
community service award points for their school award system. Students need to be 16 years or
older. Information and clear instructions will be provided to students before they commence. A
certificate and reference letter (when requested) will be forwarded to students for inclusion in

Linguistic Logistics
News from the Languages Faculty at Sydney High
Chinese
Recently the school received the results of the ACER Language
Certificates. Many students from all Languages achieved excellent results, but the results in
Chinese deserve a special mention. Accompanying the Certificates was a special letter
congratulating our school on the results in Chinese. Sydney Boys High has achieved the highest
number of High Distinctions in both Listening and Reading skills of any school participating in
the Acer Chinese Certificates. As the ACER Language tests are an Australia-wide initiative, this
is very exciting news for our school.
In addition, 2008 is the Year of Languages, and as part of the activities, Sydney Boys will be
honoured by UNESCO, who will mention this school’s considerable achievement in this
language.
Congratulations to all students who participated in the Acer tests and to Ms Zhang and Ms Yang
for their efforts.
French
Last term, Year 7 French classes enjoyed the study of the Academy-award
winning film, The Triplets of Belleville and soon the boys will be enjoying the follow-up
activity of a French brunch, complete with croissants and hot chocolate!
Congratulations to all students in Years 9, 10 and 11 French who achieved excellent results in
the recent Acer tests. Many received High Distinctions.
Fifty percent of Year 9 French achieved Distinctions and High Distinctions in Reading and
Listening.
German
Again, the Acer tests results were excellent, with Year 10 German gaining
many High Distinctions in both Reading and Listening.
This term has the added interest of visitors from Germany. We are fortunate to have with us two
interns, Ümit Saatci from Germany, who will be at Sydney High for two months, and Chris
Herting, who is an exchange student currently studying at Sydney University. Ümit and Chris
have been assisting in the German classes, taking part in German conversation and talking to the
boys about life in Germany. Our German visitors have also been sitting in on other classes, like
Year 11 English and Year 8 Latin. This cultural interchange is proving to be an enriching
experience for all.
Congratulations to all Year 9 German students who achieved excellent results in the ACER
Reading and Listening tests. Special mention must be made to Liam Aylmer for his 100% mark in the
Listening test. The following boys were awarded High Distinctions:

Latin and Greek
Sadly, last term Sydney Boys High Latin and Greek classes said
Farewell to Mr Mason, a long-standing member of the Languages Department. We wish Mr Mason a
Happy Retirement. We are fortunate to have with us Mr John Coombs, who is replacing Mr Mason for
Term 4. Mr Coombs is a Classics specialist who is one of the tutors at the Latin Summer School
held annually at Sydney University.
We hope that Mr Coombs enjoys his time with us here at High.
Lastly, we expect that all students of Languages will make the most of their study time during
this busy examination period, as linguistic skill is an asset, whatever one’s chosen career
path.

Cricket: Attention all Parents
The Australian Five Highs Cricket Carnival will be held in Sydney from December 3 to December 7,
SBHS are hosts this year.
There will be 52 Boys coming from interstate that will require billeting for 5 nights. The boys
will be playing cricket all day and basically need somewhere to sleep along with an evening meal.

Public Speaking
The following boys will be competing in the Eastern Suburbs Public Speaking Competition tonight
at The Scots College; Edwin Montoya Zorrilla, Zid Mancenido, Cameron Morrison, John Aclis, Sanbib
Ahmed and Chris Chiam. Zid and John have placed second in their respective divisions in previous

Learn to Row
A successful Learn to Row program has been running out of “The Sheds” Sunday mornings
since the beginning of 2007. Now supported by several community colleges participant numbers have
jumped. Volunteer coaches are desperately needed to accommodate this rise in participants. The
coaching session goes from 7:00 till 9:00 Sunday mornings for a period of six weeks with the next
course starting on Sunday, August 12th. Volunteer coaches will row/cox as part of the crew they
are coaching. So if you think you could get back into a boat and row 3 to four slow kilometres as

Music Notes
Jazz in the Courtyard Concert
We would like to invite you to our Annual Jazz Concert
in the Courtyard this Sunday the 11th of November. Boys need to be at school by 10:30am to meet
the tutors who will be running the workshops. There will be a BBQ at 2pm for the boys after their
workshop session culminating to the concert starting at 3pm for families and friends. Cost of the
concert is free and will feature all our Jazz bands, Jazz group and debuting our new Junior Jazz
group run by Muhamed, Ivan and Ashwin in Yr 11. Please bring along a picnic basket to enjoy with
your family and we look forward to a wonderful afternoon of fantastic music by our Jazz bands.
SBHS Spring Music Festival
This year’s Spring Music Festival will be held over
TWO evenings on Thursday and Sunday the 15th and 18th of November in the
school’s Great Hall. Thursday’s concert will feature all our small ensembles and some
year 12 soloists and Sunday’s performance will showcase SBHS large ensembles. All members
of the music ensemble program except for stage bands are to attend. Tickets will be sold on the
night, but we encourage you to buy them prior to the performance. Please make payments at the
main office and collect tickets from the music staffroom. We look forward to two wonderful
evenings of quality performances by our talented musicians and hope you are able to attend to
support their efforts and hard work.

Thursday’s concert will begin at 7pm
Sunday’s concert will begin at 5pm

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: CHRIS TANG
The 3rd grade co-captain competed well against Kings.
The team looked uncomfortable with the strange rubber ball used and the new Kings 9 million
dollar facility. This resulted in 2 turnovers near the start of the game and seemed to intimidate
many teams over the weekend. As the game progressed, Chris’ agile and sharp movements
allowed him to control the ball smoothly and safely. Chris started ripping through the entire
Kings defence scoring good easy baskets and raised the team morale – contributing vitally
to the team. The crowd were into the game and it wasn’t long until the mighty 3rd grade had
another victory. Expect to see Chris obtain a double-double this season soon!

Highlights from 3rds and 4ths
Wilson Szet sneaked through King’s tight defence
managing to snatch an offensive rebound and at the same time (whilst still in mid air) shot the
ball in the basketball. I guess that’s an Off-the-board alley-oop? In the final 30seconds
of the 4th grade game, point guard Adrian Ang kept great handles on the ball and stalled for the
last shot. The defender failed to even reach close to the ball and finally was forced to foul him
committing the 8th foul on the buzzer.
3rd Grade Match Report Against Grammar
3rd grade came across a tough athletic team
that was both much taller and bigger than them. This advantage was further enhanced that Kings
was playing on their new home court gym. With both these factors in hand, High was held down and
forced into turnovers at the start of the game. This caused our minor loss of 6points at one
stage. However High picked up its game again and chased Kings back to a draw by half time. In the
second half High started to reveal its strength. Wilson Szet and Jeffrey Wong came off the bench
to sink some easy shots whilst Chris Tang stole the ball off their guards and dished it up the
court for some easy lay-ups. Before long High was up by a good amount of points and secured it
till the buzzer winning 35-25. Special mentioning must go to Wilson, Jeffrey and Chris for their
outstanding field goal % and equal top scoring with 8points each. Also to Jacky Chen’s
great defence, knocking out the opponent’s pass more than twice within 2minutes.

High Cricket Bulletin
Last Saturday we were greeted with the sad news that Ben Encel’s father had passed away
during the week and I would like personally and on behalf of the High Cricket Committee and
cricket community, pass on our deepest sympathy to his family as our thoughts go to them.
Last Saturday was also the completion of Round 1 for Group 1 Teams and High achieved 2 WINS, a
DRAW and 2 LOSSES in our first outing for the 2007 /2008 season. The pleasing note to those
results is that it indicates we are emerging as a cricketing school with an emphasis on youth in
our overall strategy. In addition players are receiving recognition for their skills and
improvements by way of more consistent coaching in the team format which helps develop the
team’s mind set to say “we know how to win!! “ Congratulations to all members
of the 1st XI who achieved a well planned and earned win over St.Joseph’s which will give
us momentum as we face the highly fancied Shore 1st XI in Round 2. Also a well done to Hugh Howey
in his preparation of the team for their first match
The 15A’s with a modest score of 110 on the board at the completion of Day 1 and with
Joey’s at 2 -21 were in for a scrap on Day 2. With the score at 4 -89 St Joseph’s
felt it was a forgone conclusion but an unbelievable team effort and fight back by High saw
Joey’s lose their last 6 wkts for 17 runs leaving them 5 runs short of a win!!!.

AROUND THE GROUNDS
GROUP 1 TEAMS (2nd DAY)
1st XI HIGH 8 -150 (decl.) -defeated- ST JOSEPH’S 10 -132
Starting the day at 4
-76 chasing 132, High wanted to stick to the same game plan by making St Joseph’s bowl to
them. High got to 4 -90 before 2 quick wickets fell to have High then at 6 -90. The High batsmen
then consolidated and after losing another wicket at 105, we needed 19 runs to win with 3 wickets
in hand at tea. Karan Rao and Brian Kelly then guided the team to victory with some very
confident and intelligent batting. Our innings was declared at 8 -150. Joey’s could not
dismiss High who batted for 110 overs. This victory should provide much confidence going forward
but the next game vs Shore at their ground is another step up. Report from team coach Mr.Hugh

2nd XI HIGH 4 – 21 -drew with- ST JOSEPH’S
The weather and the fact that
the CP Trust closed all grounds, probably saw High rescued from an uphill fight on Day 2 when the
ground was closed at 10-15 am due to weather and soft surrounds around the centre square. However
a draw is a bonus as we split premiership points with St Joseph’s.
3rd XI ST JOSEPH’S 7 -288 -defeated- HIGH 10 -69 & 10 -96

From the team Coach: It was a sad day to be advised of the bereavement in Ben Encel’s
family but unfortunately this cannot be said for certain members of the team who decided not to
turn up thus letting down themselves, the team and the School. High was represented by only 6
regular players plus 2 who came from another game to assist and included in the regular 6 was
Ben, who showed great character making who 20 and 8 n.o over the 2 innings. Mrs Encel was on the
sidelines for support. Shejil Kumar also displayed application scoring 30 for his highest score
in cricket. As a result of last Saturday the places of those not attending will be open for
selection to players who are committed to support their team and school.

After being on the verge of
being called off High stayed on and finally got on the ground 2 hours later. St Joseph’s
were cruising at 4-89 and with just 22 runs to get for victory and looked comfortable but High
kept encouraging each other pulled off a remarkable victory and bowling Joey’s out 3 runs
short of our total. Nakul Bhagwat took 4 -13 (4 overs), Michael Phung 2 -2 (4) and Saif Haque and
Hashan Subasinghe collected one each to finish with 2 wkts each for the match. See Cricket

GROUP 2 TEAMS
All matches for 4th XI, 16B, 15B, 15C,15D, 14B and 14 C teams were
abandoned prior to the commencement times due to the wet weather and waterlogged grounds. Well
done to the junior players who rang to check as to whether games would be played to ensure their
attendance was not required.
WET WEATHER PROCEDURE -
All players are advised that when wet weather has preceded
match day or is present on match day, they must check the WET WEATHER TELEPHONE Lines which can
be found with the GROUND LOCATIONS for all of the GPS Schools on the Cricket Website. In addition
as soon as we receive cancellations we a message is flashed on our website. PLAYERS MUST

The response to families willing to take billets during
the 5 Highs Carnival has been very poor to date with only 9 billets advised. This event is

BUS TRANSPORT – to KINGS, RIVERVIEW and ST.JOSEPH’S …or CAR POOLING by
TEAMS ??
We had to cancel the proposed bus support for both Kings and St Joseph’s
last Saturday due to insufficient bookings. We need a MINIMUM of 20 passengers whether they are
cricketers or their parents to justify booking a driver for 5 hours that is required. Only 5
requests were received for last Saturday that does not justify a bus. Now that team contact lists
are being raised and with the ongoing cricket programme on the Cricket Website there is no excuse
for players not to inform themselves of upcoming matches and locations and plan ahead, this would
indicate if bus transport would be required, or if car pooling was available.

Year 7 Immunisation Program 2007
- Hepatitis B – second dose for students who received their first dose earlier in the
year
- Varicella [chickenpox] vaccine – for students who were absent when this was
administered earlier in the year
Vaccinations for Year 7 students will take place on
Monday 19 November 2007
A team of specially trained registered nurses will be visiting the school.
Next week boys will be issued parent information kits. If you would like your son to be
vaccinated, please complete the Consent Form in the kit and return completed forms to the
collection box in the Main Office. Alternatively, boys can bring the forms with them on Monday.
Boys who do not bring the completed consent forms will not be able to take advantage of this
free service.

After the boys have been vaccinated they will be given a Record of Vaccination to take home so
that you can keep their immunisation records up to date.

The School Development Committee and the P & C invite you to celebrate the New School Year
and the Chinese New Year (The Year of the Rat).

Asian food, Entertainment, Music, Prizes, Lion Dance, etc
We need your help to make this a fantastic evening for the school community.
We would love to have donations from Businesses (particularly involved with the School) to give
as small prizes on the night, or items that would add to the enjoyment of the night.
We need volunteers to help in all phases of the preparations e.g. give ideas, help in setting up,
decorating and clearing etc.
We would like you to put the date in your Diary and come to the party.
