High Notes, Vol 8 No 32, October 26 2007

From the Principal
High Talent
Congratulations to all the boys who took part in the High for Homeless
program. H4H is a great service initiative. I commend it to all boys. Our Chinese language
students gained the highest number of High Distinctions of any participating school in the 2007
Chinese Certificate 2 tests, for the Assessment of Language Competence program conducted by ACER.
Congratulations to Ms Zhang and all the boys who sat for the assessment. Lewis d’Avigdor
(2006) was awarded a Certificate of Excellence for his HSC History Extension Project. To all Year
12 Youth Off the Streets collectors – your single day efforts raised $11,435 – a
great contribution to community service! Thumbs up for a big season opener by second grade
basketball against Grammar last Saturday!
Junior Rugby Coaching
Coordinator Mr Serdar Bolen has accepted a new position in
High Rugby as the Junior School Coaching Coordinator. He will be responsible for the overall
quality of rugby coaching and training in the junior school. He will have a hands-on role and
coach a team. Serdar will liaise with Robert Devlin to construct a year round fitness platform
for summer and winter sports. All boys should get used to the idea of three training sessions per
week, involving some speed and endurance work as well as skills training. On behalf of the school
I would like to thank Serdar for his great dedication to rugby and our program in his former
position as first grade coach. He is a passionate supporter of High Rugby. I am confident that he
will help build a higher level of skills for boys in the Junior School.
Clean Up High Day
It was suggested to me that as Ian Kiernan has an international
Clean Up Australia Day concept, ought not we have a ‘Clean Up High Day’ the week or
day before the public event to demonstrate our awareness of preserving the environment? I would
appreciate the SRC and Environment Committee taking on this proposal and organising such a day.
Electricity Substation
The School Education Director, Bondi, informed me that while
the submission for minor capital works funding for 2007-08 had the project to upgrade power to
SBHS and SGHS included on the list, it was not chosen for funding. However, Sydney Region has
applied for major capital works funding to upgrade power to many of its schools. I consider this
to be an unacceptable response by DET. I have been trying since 2003 to address the electricity
supply problem. I considered building a substation just for us, but at $80,000 it was not
expenditure I could justify, given that this infrastructure work is a DET responsibility. I am
concerned that a recurrence of the six in one day supply failures will damage our network and
expensive file servers. We are spending >$150k per annum to bring the school up to digital
delivery standard, yet our basic needs to run it are not being met by the site owner.
Investing in the Planet
What are the most price sensitive utilities recurrent
costs we face? Water and power.
Water
We have had to turn our attention more and more to sustainable living policies
in recent years. The school has had significant supplies of bore water for six years. I would
like to have students take responsibility for recording, monitoring and publishing the production
and use of bore water in the school. Perhaps a class could volunteer to do this. Similarly, the
school has a meter on the 10,000 litre tank installed as part of a government grant. We are about
to install a tank next to the cricket shed. We hope to have a big tank connected to solar hot
water next year in the gym. It would be good if the wider school community knew of the annual
storage and usage volumes.
Sun
I am seeking community support for the idea of deploying solar panels on Killip
Wing to feed into our electricity grid to supplement supply. I understand that a highly efficient
new photovoltaic cell will be in production in the new year. I would really like to see the
school invest in the meters, connectors and circuits necessary to commence a bank of solar panels
in the new year. The basic infrastructure can be set up to allow expandability. Apparently the
price per panel is around $1000. Over the next few years we could market the investing in the
future concept to families who might donate a panel to our growing grid. Once 50 panels are on
line, significant savings in the annual cost of electricity to the school could be achieved.
Wind
Camden High School has installed an Australian designed quiet, turbine wind
generator. It would be an appropriate excursion to arrange a visit to their site to see what they
are doing about sustainability and recommending to me what they think of the possibility of wind
generated power supplies at High.
I am keen on a focus 2008-2010 on sustainability. Let us think globally and act locally!

NB: The competition is compulsory for all of years 7─10 and optional for
11─12. There were a number of conflicting events which affected the year 12 candidature.
UNSW Mathematics Competition
This is a very demanding competition attracting elite
mathematicians across NSW.
It is organised into Senior (11─12) and Junior (7─10) divisions.
In the Senior Division Anthony Morris was placed equal third and received a $100 prize. There
were thirteen $60 prizes in the competition including John Luu, Edwin Montoya, Albert Ng, and
Jamie Tao. The competition distributed a further thirty-eight certificates including David Fan,
Darren Ho, Yu Lin, Jiawen Ma, Trong Nguyen, Andrew Tang and Simin Yang.
In the Junior Division John Wormell was first and won $250. Declan Gorey was equal third with a
prize of $100. Fourteen further $60 prizes were awarded including Jacob Cao. Among the forty-one
certificate winners were Dale Chen, Christian Katsikaros, and Thomas Wilson.
Australian Mathematical Olympiad Results
Intermediate Division
There
were 931 students from 140 schools across the country.
Daniel Shan (Yr 10), Declan Gorey (Yr 8), Jacob Cao (Yr 10), and Christian Katsikaros (Yr 10)
were awarded High Distinctions. These are awarded to the top 10% of the candidature.

NB All of 9A and 10A were entered in the Intermediate Division and the work formed an integral
part of the class work. Recognition must go to Mr Fuller and Mr Boros for their contribution.
The Junior participants were from our Wednesday morning Enrichment Group. Recognition to Mr Choy
for his efforts.
Outstanding Achievements
Anthony Morris gained a prize for the sixth consecutive
year (it is believed to be the first time this has happened). In addition to his outstanding
performances in the UNSW competitions over the years, probably his most significant performances
have been in the Australian Mathematical Olympiad where he twice gained a Gold Medal and in the
International Mathematical Olympiad where he was awarded a Bronze Medal.
John Wormell continues to do amazingly well and will sit for the Mathematics Extension 2 HSC this
year. Remember that John is yet to turn 13.
Declan Gorey (Yr 8) has achieved some outstanding results and has a very bright future in
mathematics competitions.

Charities
The Children’s Medical Research Institute and Jeans for Genes, being a nominated
SBHS charity, are organising a new fundraiser program, Gift Wrap for a Cause.
This year gift wrapping will take place at Myer Bondi Junction, Sydney City and Parramatta from
7-24 December and at Rhodes Shopping Centre from 15-24 December.
The idea is simple – customers purchase a Christmas item and Jeans for Genes volunteers
wrap it for a small donation. Currently they are seeking volunteers who would like to assist
staff gift wrap at the above locations.
This is a perfect opportunity for students to fulfil their Duke of Edinburgh community service or
receive community service award points for their school award system. Students need to be 16
years or older.
Information and clear instructions will be provided to students before they commence. A
certificate and reference letter (when requested) will be forwarded to students for inclusion in
their resume.

Did You Know?
Did you know that Australia (competing as part of Australasia) first competed in the Davis Cup
for lawn tennis in 1905? Since that date, three old boys have been part of an Australian Davis
Cup team. Jack Clemenger (1916) was captain in 1932, Viv McGrath (1932) competed in
1933-1937, and Jamie Morgan (1986) competed in 1994.

From the Canteen Team
We know how busy life can be for today’s parents, which is why we’d especially like
to thank our loyal volunteers for their contribution to the smooth running of the canteen.
Volunteer help is vital in ensuring healthy food for our boys and an ongoing income stream to the
P&C for allocation to worthy school projects.
We’d like to say thank you by rewarding our volunteers with the chance to win a $10
Canteen voucher for their sons.
All volunteers have to do is turn up for duty as usual and sign the duty roster book. A draw will
be held each month for the lucky voucher winner. Remember, if you find you can’t make your
shift, just call a fellow parent on the roster and arrange a swap.

SBHS Basketball Supporters Box
This week there will be a section upstairs of the
gymnasium for SBHS student basketball supporters to stand separate to the general crowd. Please
stay in the roped off section and make some noise when your school needs it!! The noise really
helps out!
Mr Hayman’s player of the week: Jeremy Rajendram
In a rough encounter vs
Grammar this week the mighty 2nd grade side stood tall. They overcame size with skill and
intelligence. One player had the game of his life - Jeremy Rajendram. Jeremy was promoted to the
starting five by captain Zhijun Xu earlier that week. Taking this chance he ended the game with
16 pts, 4 reb, 2 steals and 2 assists-all whilst controlling the game from the point guard
position. A special mention must go to the mighty 16s age group who were undefeated as an age
group and the 14s age group who have dramatically improved.
B.Hayman
To team captains:
Please send in match reports to Mr Hayman by lunch time Monday.
I’m hoping to receive short reports containing highlights or what the team did very well
during each weekend.
Cheering for High:
Our players need the support when they’re on the courts.
Keep up your chants and your support for them, it’ll turn our narrow losses to wins. Also
please avoid using negative comments to the opposition team and the refs. It’s good
sportsmanship.

14Bs GAME REPORT
The game started brilliantly and we were all very energetic, making
only a few mistakes. Although Sydney Grammar had tall and skilful players, we were still
optimistic and played our best. Then after our team started to get tired, we lost confidence and
lost the match 29-8.
But most importantly our team had lots of fun. In the future we need to work on what we learned
in training and we need to box-out to get more rebounds to ensure that we can prevent easy
baskets and score more easy points near the post ourselves.

2nd Grade Match Report Against Grammar
This is one of the most impressive 2nds
matches I’ve watched since attending High. The first quarter saw High blazing in the
intensity hammering Grammar 23-8 unaffected by the “mental fog” that caused 3rds and
4ths to miss their shots. Grammar picked it up slowly through the game but High maintained its
lead easily and with outlasting stamina – swept to a 19point victory. Special mention must
go to Jeremy’s outstanding free throw and ball control – having 0 turnovers in a 2nd
grade game as a point guard! Also to Zhijun’s display of explosive movements when he shot
and rebounded his own shot over three times within 10seconds.
Brought to you by Johny Shih
Thank you to Mr Hayman for all his contributions to basketball and information

High Cricket Bulletin
Last Saturday was one of the most interesting days of cricket I have experienced, with teams from
High producing really competitive performances across the board. As all of the matches were
trials, we approached it on a learning basis about our teams whilst the Grammar teams were fired
up and in their normal competitive style. The results speak for themselves, with a range of
scores that can only be seen as a new depth of enthusiasm and talent within our ranks.
Match reports were not submitted from several teams but with the Head Teacher Sport, Richard Ayre
visiting some teams whilst I handled others, we can report that from Weigall two of our
unreported teams were handing out thumpings to their Grammar opponents in addition to the results
herein.
This season promises a few surprises to our opponents from our young squads, as well as our
senior squads, and I am looking forward to seeing the emergence of a “winning culture
mind-set” from all concerned.
As at this week, High is equal, with the top GPS School with the number of teams competing in the
GPS and Non- GPS competitions. A tribute to our programme but more particularly to the boys of
High who proudly represent their school
AROUND THE GROUNDS
1st XI GRAMMAR 7 -113 - d - HIGH 10 -73
A young team in their maiden match in the
GPS arena and some encouraging performances which will see improvements as a result of the trial
match experience. Run scorers were Kerrod McPherson 40, Andy Liu 14 Avindu Vithanage 10. Wicket
takers were Karan Rao 2 -13, Kogulan Sriranjan 2 -13, Daniel Simpson 1 -20. Andy Liu 1 -10 and
Kieran Taylor 1 -10. See the Cricket Website match report
2nd XI GRAMMAR 6 -109 - d - HIGH 8 -108
Our second young “senior XI’ who
had trouble with their shot selection in their allotted overs and paid the penalty for the lapses
in concentration. A pleasing feature however was the regularity with which our bowlers took
wickets when Grammar came to the batting crease. See the Cricket Website match report
3rd XI GRAMMAR 7 -171 - d - HIGH 7 -119
A creditable performance from a team being
initiated at this level of cricket.
Grammar batting did not have it all their own with the High bowling attack using 7 bowlers in
taking wickets regularly. Damien Tse 3 wkts, Timmy Lim 2 wkts and one each to Ritam Mitra and
Nicholas Lindeback were the most successful wicket takers. When it came to High’s turn to
bat a mini collapse occurred with Ritam Mitra (50 retired) and Toby Rosengarten (28) the only
batsmen to give the team a respectable total in a brittle batting performance due to some poor
shot selection coupled with inexperience at this level in their initial outing as a team.
4th X1 HIGH 3 -214 - d - GRAMMAR 5 -154
Off to a good start and the “Mighty
Fourths” showed the way with a solid batting performance batting first in this Limited Over
fixture. A fine knock from Alistair Taylor (52 retired) supported by James Ip (41) and Lachlan
Street (39) saw High set a formidable total in their allocated overs. High then took the field
and Grammar regularly lost wickets with pressure being applied by James Ip and Patrick Locke at
the bowling crease with a (direct hit) run-out by Gary Truong a highlight of the fielding
display.
15 As GRAMMAR 3 -249 - d - HIGH 11 -120
The trial match showed us the need for
concentration and determination when it’s our turn at the crease. Soft dismissals and
inexperience with shot selections came through but it is an area that we can definitely improve
in with the help of nets and bowling machines. Best batting Samir Kinger 36, Shimon Danziger 23
n.o. and Nathan Kok 23. Best bowling performance Andrew Huynh 1 -39 (6 overs)
14As GRAMMAR 8 -117 - d - HIGH 6 -116
A narrow loss to Grammar has given this team
the motivation it needed in its first match in the Under 14 comp. Solid batting from Ahdil
Ansaren, Aman Saksena, Sudam Dias and Krishnendu Dutta and a great bowling display by Aman
Saksena
14Bs GRAMMAR 1 -72 - d - HIGH 9 -71
Best batting on the day after a poor start to
our innings came from Dhruv Sabharwal 7, Ben Wilcox 8 and Tejas Iyer 11.
Wicket takers were Shi Feng, Dhruv Sabharwal, ben Wilcox and Tejas Iyer completing the
“double” for three of the players. See the Cricket Website match report
14Cs GRAMMAR 9 -120 - d - HIGH 10 -34
Disappointing for the 8 players who showed
commitment to be let down by the 4 boys who did not attend the trial.
But in true High spirit and teamsmanship, (short of fielders due to the absentees), the boys put
in a great fielding and bowling performance taking 9 Grammar wickets as they put together 120.
Just imagine how close it may have been if Grammar didn’t have the advantage of only having
6 fieldsmen to hit the ball through, if you take out our bowler and wicketkeeper. Main run scorer
with 14 runs was the Skipper Allen Fu who led from the front. The main wicket taker was Jeremy
Yao and S Quazi took a “ripper” of a catch as well as Z Rizvi doing well behind the
stumps as a first time wicket keeper, according to the coach.
