High Talent
Congratulations to the first grade basketball team who defeated Tamworth High 81-45 to win a place in the last eight in the state in the knockout competition. Their success is unprecedented since I have been at High. Well done to Albert Ng (Year 12) for his selection as a scholar in the Chemistry Training Program for the Australian Science Olympiads. He was awarded a bronze medal - congratulations.

Additional Year 9 Places Granted
Last week I was informed by Dr. Phil Lambert, Director of the Sydney Region, that the school could proceed with its proposal to create a seventh Year 9 class and select up to twenty boys to join High in 2008. There were concerns expressed about the school growing too large and producing too many selective places for boys, given that more boys than girls already take up selective places in the system. As part of the negotiations I offered to refrain from replacing students who leave the school until the numbers for Years 9-12 fall to below 195 for any one of those cohorts. Further, it was agreed that local area partially selective schools should not be adversely affected by the introduction of a new Year 9 class at High. Our Selection Committee will be sensitive to these and other issues as it assesses applications for the Year 9 vacancies.

In the transition phase 2008-9, places will still be offered to up to 20 students in Year 11 as we seek to reduce the size of Years 11 and 12, from 420 to 400. Simultaneously, in 2008-2009, we will offer up to 20 places for students entering Year 9, thereby increasing the size of Year 10 to 200 by 2009. In 2010, the policy becomes one of up to 20 new places in Year 9, with replacement places only in Years 10-12, if numbers for any one Year fall below 195. Hence, to minimise overall growth as a result of the introduction of the new class, up to six students could leave in any one academic year before one replacement place would become available.

I thank Dr Lambert for his strategic vision in approving our submission which will lead, I am certain, to a stronger, more integrated school culture at High.

New Debating Administration Model for 2008
After meeting with the Debating Supporters Group recently, I have considered the succession plan for debating for 2008 and beyond, when we lose Jocelyn Brewer as a staff member. Jocelyn has developed debating at High into a very large, all year responsibility. When she goes I propose to split the administration of debating along SWAS lines. Years 7-9 will have one Coordinator and Years 10-12 will have another. The job description for each role will be different. The Junior Debating Coordinator will focus on promotion of debating, recruitment, skill building and gaining debating experience and confidence. The junior program is geared towards mass participation with Teacher Trainer / Lecturers and Old Boy coaches. The program is supported by teachers taking teams away to debates and others helping to host home debates for East Side and junior competitions. The Junior Debating Coordinator would liaise closely with the debating Supporters Group and would be an in-school position.

The Senior Debating Coordinator role has a competition selection, preparation and participation focus. The role involves: recruiting, managing and paying coaches; implementing and evaluating the debating coaching manual; selecting teams; entering competitions; organising Friday night competition debates in the GPS season (in partnership with the Junior Debating Coordinator) and facilitating away debates. This role is supported by Ms Berger who accompanies senior teams in CHS competitions. Ms Cradock also supports the program by taking teams to competition debates in school hours. The Senior Debating Coordinator has responsibility for communicating policy, events, team business, venues information and web site updates. Much of the communication occurs via group emailing. End of year functions would be a joint effort involving the two Coordinators and the DSG.

At this stage it is not clear whether Ms Brewer will be able to continue her Senior Debating Coordinator role from off site. It is technically possible for a person to do so. In order to have a smooth transition to the new model for 2008, I would appreciate expressions of interest from staff in respect to the Junior Debating Coordinator position. I envisage it would have the same terms and conditions as an MIC position.

Students of concern
Parents of students identified as not reaching the school standard in academic performance this semester are being contacted by mail. I have sought their permission for the school to offer special support for their boys. The support may take the form of special writing workshops, discussions in small groups about time management and self-organisation issues, study skills training, individual consultations with Year Advisers to construct Individual Learning Plans, or referral to the School Counsellor or external professional. I have asked for the assistance of Year Advisers to try to help these boys get back on track with their learning.

Metro Screen

Pitch For A Free Course At Metro Screen During Our Open Day
Saturday June 16 10am – 4pm

Attend the Metro Screen Open Day and be given the opportunity to win a free place in a short course of your choice.

At 11am the Open Day will play host to an information session encompassing more than 40 courses in Film, Video, TV and Portable Content run by Metro Screen. This session will include details of our Certificate IV in Screen, youth unit and mobile unit. This will be followed by a Debate on the Future of Media Training and your chance to win.

Those who would like to enter the competition simply have to be at the Open Day for the start of this 11am session. You will be given 20 seconds to stand on your soapbox and tell our panel of experts how Metro Screen training will further your career.

The winner will be judged on their wit, flair and creative edge. The funnier the better!

Also included in the Open Day are workshops in camera/cinematography, editing/Final Cut Studio and tours, screenings, makeup demonstrations, info sessions on funding and mentorships as well as our Industry Markets.

Music Notices

Sydney Boys High Cabaret Night
Our Cabaret Night will be held this Saturday 16th June 7.00pm. This enjoyable evening showcases our jazz bands performing a wonderful range of music. Please join us on the fantastic night to listen or dance to the swing of the music. There will be a couple of professional dancers who will help those with Two Left Feet. This will be a great opportunity to meet and chat with other parents of music ensemble members, especially our new Year 7 parents. Please also remember to bring a plate of nibbles and drinks to share with friends and family.

If you have not yet purchased tickets, you may come earlier and purchase them at the door on the night.

Price: $10.00 per head or $25.00 per family.

Tutor of the Week
Our featured tutor of the week is our violin tutor Denis Kasza. Denis teaches the violin and viola at four Sydney schools including High. He has performed with several orchestras in the United Kingdom and Australasia and also held teaching appointments at Houcerton College, Cambridge. Denis has since been teaching and freelancing as an orchestral and chamber music player since he moved to Sydney in 1979. He is a dedicated teacher, attending SBHS camps and concerts.

Student of the Week
Muhamed Mehmedbasic is having a great week. He has been selected to attend a day at work with Ivy League records in conjunction with radio station Triple J, this Friday 15th of June. The photographers for the Wentworth Courier were at school last Friday preparing a feature on Muhamed for the Sydney Youth Orchestra and along with the rest of the Jazz group, Muhamed will be performing at the Opera House in the Sydney Region Music Festival later in August. Well done on all your fine achievements!

Piano Competition
The Sydney Boys High School Piano Competition will be held again this year in Term 3. Please stay tuned for more details on the Junior and Senior divisions. This is a wonderful performance opportunity for our piano players to shine and there will be a featured guest adjudicator for the competition.

Music Tuition Scholarships
The music department is offering scholarships to students who would like to play;
Oboe, Bassoon, Double bass and French horn.

Dolan Cup
It has been brought to my attention during the week that the Dolan Cup leader board was incorrect. An audit was commissioned and found a glitch in the algorithm used to calculate the scores. Updated Dolan cup standings are given below. Apologies to fifth grade.

Match day procedures
A reminder for all players about their responsibilities on match day.

• Plan to be at your venue at least 45 minutes prior to the scheduled kick off time. Contact either your coach or a team member if you are going to be late.
• If you get there an hour earlier you can cheer on your mates playing before you.
• Keep all comments positive and avoid derogatory comments towards officials and players.
• Make sure you have plenty of water to drink before, during and after your game.
• At the end of the game thank your opponents and the referee. Don’t forget to shake hands.
• Collect all of your rubbish and dispose of in an appropriate manner.
• If possible, stay around after your game and support your 1st and 2nd grade teams at McKay 4, from 12.00 as they take on comp. leaders Riverview.

Referee’s course
Graeme Bancroft, referee instructor FFA and Branch coach SSSRI, will once again run an introductory referee’s course. The course is open to boys from Years 9 to 12. Boys interested in participating need to register with Mr Gifford at the IA staff room.

Parent-Teacher Interviews

Parent-teacher interviews for Years 10, 11, 12 will take place on

Thursday, 21 June 2007
3:00pm – 7.30pm

Please note the following arrangements:

• Boys from all Years will be dismissed from class at the conclusion of Period 5 (2:15 pm) on this day. School Special buses will run to normal schedules and there will be supervision in the Junior Quad of boys waiting for these buses.
• Boys in Years 10, 11 and 12 have been issued with details of arrangements for interviews. They should complete the Record of Appointments section in consultation with their teachers. It is the responsibility of boys to negotiate interview appointment times with their teachers.
• Details of interview times with teachers should be recorded in the Record of Appointments section of this booklet. Teachers will sign to confirm the appointment.
• If a teacher is unavailable this fact should be recorded in the Record of Appointments section and signed by the teacher as confirmation.
• All interviews will take place in the Great Hall and adjacent classrooms in the Main Building. A map and details of locations of teachers have been provided.
• Interviews should not exceed five minutes’ duration. If there is insufficient time, a further appointment may be made for a later date, or contact by telephone arranged.
• Timing of appointments should allow for movement from one location to another between interviews.
• Tea and coffee will be available for parents throughout the evening in the Main Foyer.

Interviews for parents of boys in Years 7, 8 and 9 will be held on Wednesday 27 June, from 3:00 pm

Junior Dance

There will be a Disco for Year 7/8/9 students held in the School Hall, Sydney Girls High School on Monday. 1 8 June from 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm This function is only current students at Sydney Boys and Sydney Girls. No other people will be permitted.

Staff and security guards will provide supervision and students will only be allowed to leave before 10:00 pm if we can contact parents for permission.

We do request that parents are prompt to collect their daughter/son at 10:00 pm. Boys are to be collected in the Boys School Car Park and girls an the Girls School so as to reduce congestion. Please do not allow them to make their own way home at this time of night.

Drinks and chips will be on sale in the Cleveland Quadrangle. Students will be allowed to go into the Cleveland Quad from the School Hall and all this area will be secure.

New Library & Performing Arts Centre

Tax Deductible 125th Anniversary Project

Sydney Boys High School depends upon its community of parents, Old Boys and supporters to further the School’s ethos of the pursuit of all-round excellence.

We have a bold vision for a two stage Library & Performing Arts Centre. With advances in information technology, there is a pressing need to create a facility which is able to adapt and keep pace with meeting the increasing needs of our students. The estimated cost of the combined project is $4m. Stage one requires $1.8m; we have $400k. A new tax deductible monthly giving program has been introduced to help fund our development goal.

We have implemented an arrangement with ANZ Bank for automatic monthly deductions from a nominated credit card. You can elect to give $50, $40, $30 or $20 each month for a period of twelve months. Your nominated amount, along with your name and credit card details will be sent to the bank electronically. At the end of the financial year, the school will issue an annual statement as evidence of tax deductible donations. You can opt in or out of the scheme provided you notify the school in writing five working days before the fifteenth day of each month.
