125th Anniversary Celebrations
The Lak Saviya Foundation - our Year 10 Charity
The school donated its Tsunami Parking (Boxing Day, 2004) money to this Foundation to help a
devastated high school in Sri Lanka – Kahawa Rathnasara Maha Vidyalaya (KRMV). The school
was supplied with furniture, sports equipment, books and an internet facility in 2006. Staff and
students at the school now require a training program to assist them to use the facility created
for them. The Lak Saviya Foundation is preparing a proposal to develop and deliver such a program
so that regular communications with KRMV can be established. Year 10 boys will be raising money
this year to help this Foundation deliver these services to the disadvantaged people of Sri
Lanka. Academic Achievement List
Year 7 Semester 1 2007 Points were awarded as follows: High Distinction 6 Distinction 5 Credit 3 Pass with Merit 2 Pass 1 with the qualifying total being 45.

See Mr Beringer. Return to IndexChinese EisteddfodThe 2007 National Chinese Eisteddfod took place last Saturday at Strathfield Girls’ High School. More than 3000 candidates participated in this year’s Eisteddfod. This annual event was a poetry and prose-recital competition that provided students with the opportunity to use their acquired Chinese language skills and also to appreciate Chinese literature. Our school participated in both individual and group competitions with 65 students attending this event. This year’s Eisteddfod was highly competitive as usual. The standard of performance had been lifted to a professional level as it’s not only a simple poetry recital competition, but also an act with body movement, facial expression and vocal skills. Our boys were put in the Native Speakers’ groups, although most of them were born in Australia. It was very tough for our boys competing with a lot of students who have only just arrived from China, but they showed great enthusiasm, strength and manners. Congratulations to the 14 boys from Year 9 Chinese (community class), Gareth Chan, Austyn Guo, Hugh Huang, Merlin Li, Tian Yu Li, Justin Liang, Richard Lin, Andy Liu, Daniel Luo, Guangzhi Niu, Adrian Zhang, Leon Wang, Michael Wang and Harry Zhuang, who won 3rd prize in the 13-15 year old group competition. Well done, boys! In the 13-15 age groups, Henry Lu received 2nd place and Tian-Yu Li came 3rd. Congratulations to both of them. Jeffrey Xie achieved 3rd prize in the 16-18 age group with his impressive work. Fantastic! He has won 4 prizes over the last 5 years. Congratulations to the nine students from my Year 12 class who competed in the 16-18 age group. Most of these boys have participated in the Eisteddfod for five consecutive years. I couldn’t have expected more from you, boys. This was certainly the best performance I have seen in the past 5 years from Sydney Boys High. Although you did not win, every one of you is a winner in my heart. Your performance definitely touched the judges too, because one of them came to apologize to me at the end for not giving you the award. Congratulations to all boys who took part in this event for your dedication and achievement. Although it was a bit disappointing that some of our candidates missed out on awards after our three months’ hard work, I am sure you impressed a lot of the audience including me and the experience that you gained through these eisteddfods will definitely benefit you in future learning.

see families being so involved. I am so proud of our boys, not only because of their language
abilities, intelligence, effort and awards, but also the honour they have brought to Sydney Boys

The new details are: GPS Volleyball Results – Round 1Our volleyball competition is divided into two rounds. Since we have just finished the first round we can let you know how well we have been doing so far this year. The Firsts remain undefeated with a clean sweep of 4 wins all without losing a set! The Seconds are also undefeated but have only played 3 matches because not every school can field two teams. On the way to this result they’ve only lost 3 sets. The full results are:

Stan Jones Cup Report The event format was laid out over four pools with three schools in each one, where the top two would go through. Coming first in your pool is a big advantage as you play a school in the quarter-finals that came second within their respective pool. From semi finals onwards, it became knockout. With each school, you would play six sets; four singles and two doubles. All sets were a normal tiebreak set being first to six games and a tiebreaker at six all. We were top seed in our pool, wiping the floor with Sylvania and Gymea by not even dropping a match the whole day. Day 2 was predicted to be a tough day at the office for all of us as we approached the knock out phase. The injured Mitch Kelly was replaced by the committed Ivan Cerecina with thanks to Mr.Ayre who brought him especially down from band camp in the hope of keeping us in contention for the finals. We played Kingsgrove in the semi-final on our path to the finals with long time rivals Endeavour.
After all matches had concluded, we calculated that we were even on sets and games resulting in a
one off doubles tie breaker to determine who would take the title. After a nail biting,
hair-raising close doubles match, John and myself narrowly closed it out by just two points
giving us the win and title we had been hoping to reclaim. Mr.Ayre’s hair went four shades
greyer during that breaker, making him most relieved alongside Mr.Moody and the team who had
smiles all around. This sets us up to compete now in the state titles later this year in Albury.

Library Fundraising Campaign
Open Day and Marketing Strategy for SBHS Ms Gowran is working on an overall marketing strategy for the school in terms of brochures, advertising and school image. Articles have recently been submitted to local papers about SBHS successes in National Geography competition and Debating. To date these have not been published. P & C Exec expressed strong support for Ms Gowran’s suggestion of installing a changeable message board on Cleveland St to inform the general public of the school’s many successes.

If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required. If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Beringer, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school.

Parent Saves Annual Music Camp
A Report on the Music Camp Needless to say, the camp was enjoyed by all our boys, who benefited enormously from the guidance of tutors who also attended our camp and our music teachers, Ms Gilmore, Ms Miller and Ms Lim. The opportunity to engage in solid rehearsal time and intensive practice with fellow students, as well as leisure time, was fully exploited. We hope students will take away experiences and lessons from this camp to help them to become better musicians.
A big thanks to parents who helped organised the BBQ dinner at school on the Wednesday afternoon
and bravely tackled the task of feeding 182 starving boys. Having been kept away from real food
for three days (come on! camp food isn’t real food), your hard efforts were reflected in
the standard of the performances in the Final Concert.

Golden Gloves Match reportsGPS Rd.2 v Shore: Saturday June 2nd 1st grade were determine to get their season back on track after a first round loss to Newington. In a dominant first half High created several excellent chances with Jeremy Luscombe and Gehan Karunaratne converting. However, Shore hit back to level the scores at half time, largely through a questionable penalty decision. A raft of missed opportunities in the first half would come back to haunt High. The second half was end to end excitement, with Shore having the bulk of the chances on goal. Excellent defending from Daniel Campion and the odd stroke of luck, in the shape of the posts, saved High from an undeserved loss. The eventual 2-2 result was a huge disappointment after such a superb first half. In other matches, 5th grade put up another good performance beating Shore 3-0 at Northbridge away from home. Ben Lee scored two stunning goals. Paul Phuah got the third goal. Goalkeeper Matt Lee and the defence led by Adrian was again outstanding in keeping yet another clean sheet.

16Bs 3 drew 3 with Shore A good game but most outstandingly played by left-mid Leonard Teng, double goal-scorer and current leader in the MVP tally. The other goal was taken by Mark Lucchitti and with him there was tremendous support from the other striker Kang Lim who came close but missed out on his usual several goals-per-game. That said, the three-two-ones went as following, three to Leonard, two to Mark and one to Kang. Welcome back to Mishu Osinski, returning from his trip to Germany, and Razeen Ahmed, back from injury, both great assets to the team. All in all, a top game with a pleasing result that already puts us higher then where we finished last year, from here on things can surely only get better. THE ONION BAG

William Shao was unlucky not to score a couple of times before William Stefanidis put High ahead late in the second half. From then on it was all High's game and Sam scored soon after. High attacked to the end and thoroughly deserved their win.

No other people will be permitted. Staff and security guards will provide supervision and students will only be allowed to leave before 10:00 pm if we can contact parents for permission. We do request that parents are prompt to collect their daughter/son at 10:00 pm. Boys are to be collected in the Boys School Car Park and girls an the Girls School so as to reduce congestion. Please do not allow them to make their own way home at this time of night. Drinks and chips will be on sale in the Cleveland Quadrangle. Dr Kim Jaggar New Library & Performing Arts CentreTax Deductible 125th Anniversary Project Sydney Boys High School depends upon its community of parents, Old Boys and supporters to further the School’s ethos of the pursuit of all-round excellence. We have a bold vision for a two stage Library & Performing Arts Centre. With advances in information technology, there is a pressing need to create a facility which is able to adapt and keep pace with meeting the increasing needs of our students.
