High Talent
Congratulations to 2006 students Vinh Pham (University of Sydney Outstanding Achievement Scholarship) and Long Chen (University of Sydney Entry Scholarship) who will be recognised in a Scholarships Ceremony this month. Tom Castleton (Year 12) has had two of his pictures hung at the Mosman Youth Art Exhibition – a good recognition of his standard. Well done to the 2nd-4th XV for their commitment and courage when playing St Joseph’s College 17As and Bs last Saturday. Great spirit! Congratulations to the 1st XI and 1st XV for their morale boosting wins in trial games last Saturday.

General Service Contributions
Thank you to those families who have paid their contributions. I entreat parents to pay their invoices in term 2 so that we can plan to spend the money for the benefit of your sons in this academic year.

Dedication of the Sir Roden Cutler Memorial Gates
On Thursday, May 24, the Governor-General will dedicate the Sir Roden Cutler Memorial Gates. Considerable variations to our routine will be necessary. All students except Year 11 charity collectors and cadets will go to period 1 and then Years 7, 8 & 11 will go to the assembly in the Great Hall to be seated by 0950. Years 9, 10 & 12 will go to period 2.The Governor General will arrive at 0950 take the salute and inspect the honour guard. By 1000 the Governor General will arrive at the main foyer to greet the official party and important guests. 1005-1035 assembly in Great Hall. The Governor General makes his way to the main foyer for photographs and then to the Junior Quad to start the wheelchair roll, after which he will join our guests in the courtyard for morning tea. The Governor General is scheduled to depart around 1100.

Sir Roden Cutler Charities – Collection Day and Wheelchair Roll
On May 24 the Sir Roden Cutler Charities launches its wheelchair roll which will be expanded this year to include 100 country towns. The campaign will commence from our Sir Roden Cutler Memorial Gates, escorted by our Year 11 students. Year 11 students in groups will spend a couple of hours collecting money in the morning peak period from: Circular Quay, Wynyard (George St. and York St.), Town Hall, Martin Place, Central (all three exits), Edgecliff Station and Bondi Junction. Boys volunteering for the last two venues will be taken by bus from school at 0700 and picked up again at 0900. Old Boy Richie Irvine is our liaison person with the charity. Collectors will be issued with a personal collection bucket which they will return to the help desks, located at the transport hubs. Students will make their way to school to be seated in the Great Hall by 0950.

After the dedication of the gates by the Governor General, the wheelchair roll will be launched. Year 11 students will be involved as wheelchair attendants or as an honour guard. The roll will cross Anzac Parade and move to the SCG, where Year 11 will form a guard of honour as the wheelchairs roll out onto the ground. Year 11 will then have lunch provided by Sir Roden Cutler Charities. The Roll will proceed to Victoria Barracks and then down Oxford St. Year 11 boys will be asked to either accompany the roll as roving collectors or to return to their morning locations for a lunch time collection 1200-1400. Once collectors have returned their collection tubs they are free to go home.

Regulation of Drugs in Sport
In 2006, the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority Act and regulations, established the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority. ASADA implements the National Anti-Doping Scheme which involves testing athletes by taking and analysing samples to detect violations of ant-doping rules. Testing may be done without advanced notice in or out of competition. Unlike the NSW Sports Drug Testing Act (1995), the Commonwealth legislation does not stipulate procedural requirements for the taking of samples from minors. The World International Anti-Doping Standard for Testing (2003) makes allowances for third parties to be notified prior to testing. Advice to the AAGPS highlighted the conflict between state and Commonwealth legislation on this matter. The NSW Rowing Association website warns Club and School Regatta competitors about drug testing. The term ‘athlete’ (Regs. S4) is defined very broadly. Parents should be aware that sportsmen who compete at state or national competitions are likely to have their names added to the Registered Testing Pool.

Recent publicity surrounding attempts by ASADA to test rowers at two GPS carnivals necessitated a meeting of GPS Heads. The Heads were of the view that no testing should be allowed on school sites or at school fixtures without a set of protocols, training opportunities for coaches and athletes and information made available to parents. A set of draft protocols has been circulated. Further meetings of the Heads will be required to safeguard the rights, privacy and well-being of our state level athletes.

GPS Heads Meeting 24 April
The Heads re-affirmed their previous decision to change the date of the athletics season to before the rugby season This was the majority view of the Heads after notification by CAS Heads that they would keep their rugby season before their athletics season. A meeting of Heads and Sportsmasters was convened to determine an appropriate model for the AAGPS to hold a stand alone winter season, without trial game fixtures with CAS schools if necessary.

P & C General Meeting

Climate Change and What We Can Do as Individuals and as a School Community
The topic for our next P & C General Meeting on Wednesday 16 May at 7.30 pm in the Staff Common Room will be 'Climate Change and what we can do as individuals and as a school community'. Guest speakers are Stephen Dickey from WWF Australia and Danielle Ecuyer, President of WFCA.

All parents, staff, friends and anyone else interested in climate change and sustainability are highly encouraged to attend. There will be free drinks and snacks and the usual socialising and networking after the meeting.

CBD Get Together and Business Network

The High Club is having another social event in the CBD. All old boys, parents, friends and family of the school are invited to what promises to be another happy, enjoyable and informal event. If you’re in business, work in a business and will be in Sydney, be there!!

Rugby Committee Meeting Summary

The second meeting of the SBHS Rugby Committee for 2007 was held on 2 May 2007. The following is a summary of the meeting:

Present: Rob Fetherston, Serdar Bolen, Kel O’Keefe, Katherine Deacon, Geoff Stein, Christina Chow, Julie Blomberg, Judy Fetherston, Shirley Tickner, Geoff Andrews.

Apologies: Julie Connolly
President commented on how good it was to see the so many parents at the meeting. It is a good sign for the season.

BBQ Coordinator: Position is still vacant. Parents of Year 7 or 8 players are encouraged to apply for the position. We need to establish a system whereby parents will undertake these tasks for two of three years and then pass them on to the next generation. For 2007 J Blomberg to act as coordinator, R Fetherston to look after the gas bottle, D Blomberg and Mr Ambrose to set up, Mr Bolen to close. S Tickner to observe this year with a view to coordinate in 2008. G Andrews volunteered to purchase new BBQ utensils.

President’s Strength Training Award: Gareth Deacon and Daniel O’Keefe both appreciative of the award. Both are requested to see Jason to finalise award.

Correspondence: Email received from Laurie Heil indicating that the hot water system at the Fairland pavilion has broken and that a plumber had been called for Friday to fix it. Electric jugs and an urn had been supplied as a temporary measure.

Treasurer’s Report: Outstanding debts from 2006 have now been paid. The washed out fixture against Cranbrook did not help our early season finances. Current balance was $1800. Most of which would be accounted for by outstanding bills. Recent parking money ($1240.00 from 21 April 2007) requested to be transferred to committee.

Cancellation of Games at McKay: The committee is concerned at the decision making process made about closing the McKay fields. Rugby concerns are to be expressed at the next P & C meeting. High Teams for 2007 There will be an opportunity to increase the number of teams we field this year if coaches feel it is appropriate.

Did you know that 115 judges have been appointed to the Federal Court of Australia in the 30 years since its foundation in 1977? Seven percent of them attended Sydney High. The first old boy to be appointed was John Gallop (1947) who served 1978-2000. Two old boys are currently on the bench - Rodney Madgwick (1958) and Peter Jacobson (1961).

Fencing Report

Schools State Championships
Seniors Julian Byrnes, Patrick Duffy and I (Yu Lin) competed in the Schools State Championships Seniors on Saturday 28 April at Newington. The day started brilliantly, with a victory from everyone. 4-2 from Julian, 5-0 from Patrick, and 5-4 comeback from me after being down 0-4 with only two minutes left in the bout.

Julian managed to beat the top seed in his poule and ended up winning five out of six bouts before being seeded 11th for the direct elimination (DE) round. Patrick ranked 16th and I ranked 25th. at this stage; both of us were out of form and fenced inconsistently. Julian and Patrick got a bye for the first round of the DE, whereas I had to battle to stay in the competition. I regained my form and won my first DE bout 15-0 in a little over four minutes. Unfortunately, due to my low ranking, I had to face a strong opponent in the second round and was knocked out 8-15 to retain my rank of 25th.

Julian fought hard for the entire nine minutes of his first DE bout to snatch an exhilarating 14-13 victory, but was defeated in the third round and ranked 12th overall.

Patrick had to face the 17th seed and was unfortunate to lose the closely contested bout. He ended up ranking 19th overall.

Saturday was an enjoyable day, and was a good opportunity to gauge the quality of our opponents for this season. A big surprise is in store for them next time, as we’ll be getting back to some serious training without any distractions.

From the Rugby Master’s Desk

Another season of High rugby kicked off last week with some very encouraging results. I congratulate all the players who made their rugby debut for High. I know you will find the experience of playing rugby in one of the toughest schoolboy competitions very rewarding. The 1st XV against SCEGGS Redlands turned around a 0 – 36 loss in 2006, to run out winners 14 – 10 on Saturday. The 13As, 15As and 16As also performed well against their age counterparts from SCEGGS. This year we are playing in age teams for the first time since 2002 which I believe is a positive step in the future development of rugby at High.

We have adopted a different training approach this year for the juniors. The two afternoon training sessions will be devoted to individual position and unit skill development as well as improving physical fitness. The sports afternoons are aimed at developing teamwork and patterns of play. The High Rugby Committee has employed extra coaching assistance to help reduce the player to coach ratio and hopefully increase the quality of learning in the precious amount of training time we have each week.

The Rugby Committee’s focus is the support of High rugby players. Our fund-raising activities include the home game BBQ and canteen sales and the infrequent parking day. James is a dedicated rugby player, well respected by his team mates who had worked hard during the off-season. He will be sadly missed. I look forward to his speedy recovery and return to the team.

Volleyball

High Hosts NSW Girls Inter Regional Tournament
Each of the 10 sporting regions in NSW sent their best girls volleyball team to High last week to play off for the top place.

Regional teams are composed of the best volleyballers from any school in that region. The net result is 10 very good teams and a close competition. The Inter regional is also used to select the NSW team to play New Zealand later in the term.

The tournament was won by Sydney North in a hard fought final against Western region.

High boys officiated throughout the tournament and received huge praise for their work ethic and polite manner. Thomas Nguyen was one of the two First Referees and was commended by all coaches and the state convenor for his professional demeanour.

A big thank you to the Ambrose, Connolly, Ng , Taylor, Du and the Denny-Smith families for taking billets.

The boys Inter regional is being held this week at Penrith. 5 High boys were selected to play in the Sydney East team. They were Victor Nguyen, Terry Ly, Ping Du, Alex Le and Oliver Konakoff.

The first round of GPS Volleyball kicks off this weekend with High playing Scots at Scots.

Weights Room

All boys should be well into their physical preparation for summer sport 2007. If you haven’t already started then get a move on. Time waits for nobody and the time is NOW! Opening/closing times remain the same with some minor adjustments for sprint training to be confirmed this week.

Hard Work
I give credit where credit is due and I would like to give a pat on the back to one boy in particular, Kevin Sheng whose work ethic in the weights room is second to none. The saying “hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work hard “, will most certainly apply to Kevin when he comes up against a more talented tennis player who hasn’t put the physical work in and is relying on talent alone. With the work you’re doing you’ll wipe the floor with more and more of your opponents as time goes by. At the very least they will have to work extremely hard to beat you. “There is no substitute for hard work, an iron will and the strictest of discipline”. Keep it up, Kevin

Discipline
Please keep the floor area outside the weights room free from clutter. We need all the space we can get and clothing and bags lying on the floor and posing a danger to others will be swept into the car park. Boxes are provided. If none are left place your gear neatly and safely against the wall out of the way

Peer Programs
If you are a long term senior attendee to the weights room then I will be asking you to take some responsibility for making sure that

1. Younger boys are lifting correctly/appropriately
2. New boys are following the standard warm-up/injury prevention system
3. Discipline is maintained at a high standard in training/gym cleanliness and gym etiquette.

It is important that you all begin to take some ownership and pride in the weights room and with that comes the enforcement of standards and discipline from within the student strength training community. By teaching others you will in turn obtain a greater understanding yourself.

Sydney High Football: The Onion Bag

Bill Turner Cup
I had the pleasure to view the 15s play a Bill Turner Cup match against Grammar last Wednesday. I was genuinely thrilled by the skills, attitude and maturity displayed by all the boys. Standouts were captain Anton Paul, attacking dynamos Jeremy Rajendram and Enoch Hui. The following is a match report supplied by Enoch Hui.

Round 1, 2nd May
SBHS 15As vs. Sydney Grammar 15As

Wednesday arvo was a good day not just because we all got sixth period off but we also had the chance to send Grammar packing in the Bill Turner Cup. The opposition had trained for a reasonable amount of time in term one, while our 15As had not trained a single session. The game started with High playing half-field football, with Grammar sent huddling in a disorganized bunch inside their own half. The scoring opened with a break down the left wing with Enoch cutting the ball in, Andy dummying and Jeremy comfortably slotting it past the keeper, who glared as the ball wisped past him into the net. Goal number two pretty much sent Grammar home with Andy sliding it past the keeper. Our orchestra was finalised with Anton heading the ball past the keeper, thanks to a nice corner by sub Mike Carr.

Trials Saturday May 5
Finally we were able to play our first trial matches last weekend, with mixed results across all grades. Highlights included a convincing 6-0 win to the 1st XI over Oxley College. Dynamic midfielder, Shuttleworth bagged a hat trick, reborn striker Luscombe chimed in with a brace of well taken goals and the ever elusive Karunaratne the other scorer. One of the most solid backlines High has had on the park in a number of years was rarely threatened and pleasingly offered extra options in attack. A full team, full field performance.

The 2nd XI played an internal trial and produced a style of play that pleased and encouraged co-coaches Dickson and D’Souza. Dimitropoulos opened the scoring with a sweet header. Flamboyant midfielder Blaxell showed his class scoring twice. A new look backline took their time to adjust but managed to keep 3XI scoreless with committed defence from Jeremy Ireland and captain Harry Walker.

In other fixtures both the 15A and 16A travelled to the GPS football powerhouse of Newington and registered respectable odd goal losses. The mighty 14Cs had a comprehensive 2-0 victory over our Eastern suburbs neighbours and the 13D had a great start to their football careers at High with a 5-0 thumping of Barker.

McKay 4
This weekend sees the return of 1st and 2nd grade to the spiritual home of High Football, McKay 4. Both games will be played in the traditional afternoon timeslots of 12 and 1.15. It is hoped that this will give the opportunity for most of the junior players to attend and cheer on the 1st and 2nd grade teams when we play our home fixtures.

Planning Your Day
On a disappointing note several teams started without the full complement of players and there was one game where High managed to field only 8 players. Please ensure you know exactly where and when your game is and allow plenty of time to find the venue. Organise your travel arrangements and plan to be at the venue at least 45 minutes prior to kick off. As a courtesy to the team, if you are running late, a call to either the coach or a fellow team member can greatly reduce the disruption to the team. The earlier this info is received the easier it is for the coach to reorganise and/or borrow players from another team.

Music Notices

MusicFest
MusicFest is the Australian edition of Fête de la Musique, a unique international event that takes place on 21 June each year to celebrate the summer/winter solstice. Initiated in France 25 years ago, its name and concept have spread throughout the world. At present Fête de la Musique brings together more than 120 countries and 250 cities in an exciting live music celebration. Participating cities include London, New York, Berlin, Rome, Bamako, Tel-Aviv, Havana, Tokyo and Cairo.

The second Australian edition of the Fête will take place Thursday June 21. Sydney Boys High musicians have registered to perform again in this event.

Education Week (13-19 May 07)
A number of our senior students will be performing at Eastgardens for Education Expo Week on Thursday and Friday. We would like to invite any parents to come and support the students in this performance.

Annual Music Camp
Our Annual music camp will be held this term from the 28 to 30 of May 2007 (Week 6). Students are asked to collect a note from the music staffroom which includes all required information. All music ensemble members are expected to attend and there will be a camp dinner and concert on the Wednesday evening in the Great Hall. Year 7, including training band, training strings and guitars are all expected to attend.

Real Rowing for Rigour Racing Shells on the Parramatta River

If you want to learn Rowing in Sydney, then this course of 6 classes is for you. Whether you are a raw land lubber or have some previous experience, come and learn the skills of rowing. If your son is a rower then here is another experience that you can share. If your son does not row then you are still most welcome to join these classes. Rowing is the ideal aerobic sport for the entire body as it is low impact and has a low incidence of injury. You will also enjoy messing about in boats as well as the magic moments of early mornings on the water. Further courses will be planned for Terms 3-4. Under 18 Learners must be accompanied by a participating adult.

Learning Outcomes
At the completion of the course participants will possess the following skills and knowledge:

• Basic knowledge of rowing style and boat rigging
• Basic navigation rules and river etiquette
• Ability to row with a crew in a racing shell

Other Information

Complete crews are desirable but not essential. Other adult participants from a number of Community Colleges will also be in attendance. Make-up crews can be arranged in the IVs and VIIIs used.

Safety Notes: Participants must be able to swim 50 metres and tread water as a safety requirement. All participants must sign The 探花视频 Foundation Indemnity Form, stating swimming ability, before they are allowed on the water. Qualified coaches will be appointed to take charge of each crew.

Participants should bring: a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, snack, water, well-fitting shorts and top (loose clothing may become caught in rigging), football socks as well as a change of clothes to wear home. All participants must wear suitable footwear (no thongs or sandals) for carrying boats in wet areas.
