High Talent
Talented sailor, Phillip Kurts, won the Tri-Series radial Laser division (1,2,1) against many competitors from GPS and CAS schools. Well done, indeed! Congratulations to Jason Kok and James Mackay (Year 11) who are to compete in Brisbane as members of the NSW State Schools Symphonic Wind Ensemble in the Open A Division of the Australian Band championships in April. Great work by Tim Burston (Year 9 Drama) for his great review of the Short and Sweet festival of plays. A big thank you to D’arcy Blaxell and mum Carolyn for giving up a Friday night (unscheduled) to help out cricket parking in an emergency.

Sir Roden Cutler Charities
On March 7 in the evening, Mrs Roser, Will Clegg and I, accompanied by School Captain Adam Farrow-Palmer, cadets, Year 11s and Prefects, attended a ceremony where one of Sir Roden’s walking sticks was presented to the Sir Roden Cutler Charities by Lady Cutler. As you know, this charity has been assigned to Year 11 under the new charities policy. Along with a dozen others connected with the charity, I have been made an Honorary Custodian of the Sir Roden Cutler Walking Stick for 2006. The real one was accepted by Alan Jones on behalf of the group. He thanked our boys publicly in his acceptance speech for taking on the charity as one of their own. Our boys helped distribute promotional material and acted as waiters to distribute finger food at the reception. I was proud of their demeanour and social poise. They promoted the school very well indeed among some high profile supporters of the charity, including the Leader of the NSW Opposition, (Mr Debnam), The Speaker in the NSW Parliament (Mr Aquilina), The Commonwealth Minister for Health (Mr Abbott), Parliamentary Secretary (Mr Turnbull), and several Councillors. High profile businessmen and philanthropists, including Dick Smith and Harvey Norman, mixed with sporting greats from all codes, including league legends John Raper, Ron Coote and Swans coach Paul Roos. Given Sir Roden’s history with our school, the connection with this charity promises to be mutually beneficial, as we have access to prominent people who may help us in some of our goals too. Getting stuck in was one of Sir Roden’s great qualities. I will be asking Year 11 to get stuck in to help at various events for Sir Roden Cutler Charities this year.

Jumped on at Joeys 4/3
In first and second grade basketball, Joeys sides were very physical but also skilful. They out muscled and pressured our boys into low percentage shots. The home sides were favoured by an ‘anything goes’ style of refereeing, where only 3 fouls were called in a quarter in first grade. While fair to both sides, this style of officiating produces rough games, favouring intimidating physiques more than skill and using the rules to gain advantage. Needless to say we were overwhelmed by the unique Joeys experience. Coaches will need to prepare sides for a different kind of game when we visit. It was the same at the cricket where we talked ourselves out for 58 in first grade and were belted for 200+ in reply. Self belief was not a feature of our day. At the tennis we faced a tough team with a good game plan. We lost the doubles. Mitch Kelly took it up to the Joeys and CIS number 1, winning the first set 7-5 before succumbing in 3 sets. A dogged performance from Ivan Cerecina was our only win.

Riverview Rampage 11/3
I have watched many basketball games since 2000, but I have never felt as much pride in our boys, nor satisfaction for just reward for hard work, as I did last Saturday witnessing High’s big away win against Riverview in first grade. After a start full of ‘hustle’ showed that we had come to play, High lost the first quarter 13-25. Long passes were intercepted or went out of court at least 8 times during the game but we were applying pressure to our opponents each time. By half time the boys snuck ahead 34-32. They held that margin until ¾ time at 49-47, inspired by the penetration to the basket of Dale Sun, the big rebounding, offensive and defensive, by Moussa Farhat who really played well and the occasional downtown bomb from Harry Walker. The boys really stepped up in the last quarter, the intensity in their attack, defence and communication lifting noticeably. Some late free throw shooting accuracy from Lewis d’Avigdor and a couple of late lay ups from Francis Wong, our ball distributor, caught the defence off guard. The boys kept their cool in the dying minutes to record a great win 74-69. The High supporters went wild. It was a huge team effort.

High’s Regatta
Congratulations to Con Barris and his staff for presenting a very efficiently run rowing regatta at Hen and Chicken Bay on Saturday last. I spent time in the marshalling boat with Mr Coan and with Mr Luscombe in the chase boat accompanying the races. Thanks to their efforts and many more volunteers like them, the morning ran smoothly, despite erratic boat handling by several crews. Our Year 8 first quad showed potential but like all crews need to concentrate on the speed of their own boat by facing straight ahead, rowing hard and smoothly and letting the coxswain inform them of their position on the race course. I enjoyed my morning.

Year 7 Parent Group 2006 at 6:30 pm Monday, 20 March
in the Staff Common Room, Sydney Boys High School (near the main office).

The Year Group meetings are an ideal opportunity to meet other parents in your year, to raise questions, make suggestions and air any concerns you may have. The Year 7 Parent Group is open to all Year 7 parents. In previous years, the group has put together a Year 7 contact list; organised social functions for Yr 7 families; started up a Yr 7 chess club including coaching; nominated a Year 7 parent to the P & C Executive.

LETTERS RE ABSENCE/LATENESS/ EARLY LEAVE
When your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by a parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required.

If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Beringer, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school.

LEAVE
If you require leave for your son please, apply in writing and address your application to the Principal, Dr Jaggar, stating the reason and length of time of the leave. Your son must then present this application to Dr Jaggar for permission for the leave. Please remember to apply before the leave and not after.

The Principal must approve all leave applications.

High Regatta – 11 March 2006

Last Saturday was a warm, slightly overcast day with little wind – perfect conditions for rowing and also for running a barbeque and food stall for spectators. While Mr Barris and the team of coaches ran a seamless regatta on the water, High rowing parents (past and present) were busily engaged in running the movable feast which accompanies any GPS regatta. There is quite a lot of work involved in moving everything to Bayview Park and back as well as the actual purchasing, cooking and selling, but all the effort yielded a significant boost to Rowing finances.

A small army of helpers deserve thanks for keeping up High’s reputation for running the best regatta. Thanks from the Rowing Committee to anyone who came along and helped out. Special thanks to ‘retired’ rowing parents Selim Stamati and Paul Girdler who must think they have jobs for life at this regatta. Liz Hurrell was on the scene early and late to manage finances for the day. Core catering was organised by Antoinette Farrow, Vicki Angell and Craig Phillis. Drinks were expertly managed and rapidly transported by Andrea Freiman, while Steve Whiting and Paul Eriksson also assisted with transport and the barbeque. Maree Phillis and Sandra Stojanovic worked tirelessly behind the counter all morning and then some. Celebrity chef this year was former Captain of Boats and School Captain from the seventies, David Blomberg. It is to be hoped that some of our current rowers will one day return to work on the parent barbeque at this regatta! !

A final reminder to all parents and supporters of Sydney High Rowing about the huge Boatshed Dinner in the Great Hall on Wednesday 22 March. Please pay through the school office.

High Cricket Bulletin

As we near the end of the season there are some encouraging signs coming from our junior teams who are growing in skills and strengths each week. The three (Year 7) teams in the Under 13 Competition as well as the Year 8 teams are gradually closing the gaps between High and our opponents. The boys have been working hard at sport afternoons and their efforts have translated into better batting, fielding and team skills. We still have plenty to do, but they have put pressure on spots in our top team for term 4, which will add to the competition to be provided from the 10 club cricketers who will become available also.

PARKING ROSTER – 10th.MARCH 2006- SAVED BY THE FEW
The cricket section absolutely embarrassed itself last Friday night when only 3 people turned up to assist at 5-0pm and 2 others fitted in at a minutes notice when dropping a family member attending the Rugby. With the exception of D’Arcy Blaxell (assisting at a minutes notice) not one senior cricketer attended. Just as poor was that no parent attended, from a total of 196 cricketers representing 11 school teams. The task was left to Hugh Huang (Year 8 –U.14Bs), Hugh Howey and myself from 5-0pm and thankfully the assistance of Mrs Blaxell and D’Arcy at a minutes notice. Without Serdar Bolen’s parking organization, this would have been a disaster for our regular parking public. My thanks to those who saved us on this occasion and for those who suggested they were unaware of the times and date, I can’t do more than mention it for the past 6 weeks in advance through High Notes.

Our next Parking Duty is Friday 31st MARCH report time between 4-45 and 5-0pm at the Gymnasium. Please email me of your availability to attend.

THE BUSKER AWARD
Young Hugh Huang (Year 8) on Friday night claimed the award for Best Busker in the school. For two and half hours he worked alone, kerbside, on the main gate directing vehicles into the school and engaging car patrons in dialogue and some great off-the-cuff one liners. He’s got my vote.!! Well done Hugh- you’ll do us anytime in our team.

House Volleyball

“Volleyball is played at Sydney Boys High School as a winter sport for all Years from 7 to 12 and involves competition with CHS, GPS and some Independent schools. We compete in age divisions U14, U15, U16, U17, and Open. Sydney High also competes in the Metropolitan Schools Tournaments, the CHS Knockout and the National Schools Championships held in Melbourne during the last school week of term 4. Sydney High has one of the best volleyball facilities in NSW, with a 3-court gym with high ceilings, a sprung floor and first class lighting.” – School Website

High Volleyball is run by Mr Kay from the science department. Quinton Yang is the newly appointed Prefect of Volleyball and is responsible for improving the image of volleyball at High.

House Volleyball Games for Year 7 will be held in the following weeks on Mondays or Fridays. Everyone is encourage to participate, to discover a new style of team game that is both enjoyable to play, and suspenseful to watch.

Volleyball is played at both a national and international level. It is one of the most intense sports in the Olympic Games. At High, you can experience playing volleyball at a state and interstate level. Every year, boys from 1st and 2nd grade volleyball travel to Melbourne for a 7 day tournament, from which High always come home with great success and memories.

Here is just a basic rundown of the rules of volleyball, to familiarise you with the game before the House Games start:

Rules:

1. 6 people on each team, two rows of 3. Front row (closest to the net) are the
   Setter: sets up a spike
   Outside hitter: smacks the ball Blocker:
   Blocks a return The three people in the back row cannot move up to hit a ball. The front can move back.
2. (stating the obvious) The ball cannot touch the floor.
3. There are boundary lines, and the net with two flags on each end of the net. All shots must travel in between the two flags (or poles).
4. Your team serves if you win the point. If you are receiving the ball, and you win the point, everyone in the team must rotate one position clockwise.
5. Every player gets to serve. Same player can serve if the team wins the serve, if not another player must serve when the serve is returned to that team.
6. Everyone gets only one serve, i.e. no faults
7. Game does not stop if the serve clips the net, i.e. no lets.
8. Maximum three hits on each side.
9. One person cannot hit the ball consecutively.
10. No touching of the net, or stepping over your half of the court.
11. You can step outside the boundary of the court to hit the ball.
12. The ball cannot hit the roof.
13. You can hit the ball with ANY PART of your body, but you can’t hold the ball.

To make these rules simpler, here’s an amended edition:

1. You must have fun!
2. Make it enjoyable for yourself and everyone else.
3. Remember that it is a team game.
4. Encourage everyone to have a go.

Have a go at volleyball at HIGH! Just like any other sport, if the response is good, then the school would devote more energy into it to make it more accessible for other years, and the future years of High. Hope to see you participate next week!

High came up against a formidable foe on Saturday in the form of Iggies. Although they are out of contention for the premiership, they showed form which was premiership worthy, as they white washed us.

In the doubles, Hai and Mitch played a well controlled match, however, their opposition were able to win the more important points and pull off a win. Matt and Ivan showed signs of brilliance; however, they too, were outplayed by their more drilled opponents. Daniel and David played fantastic tennis at times; however, they were unable to keep up at the high level, which handed the win over to their more consistent opponents.

In the singles, Mitch struggled to keep focus and find form in a lack lustre performance – his worst of the season, to go down to an opponent who he would have beaten easily on a good day. Matt had the closest score line in the singles, and was unfortunate to lose, with only a few points here and there proving the difference. Daniel was overwhelmed by his opponent, scrambling from side to side; however, he was able to hit a few spectacular forehands. Ivan played well, but was outlasted by his more consistent opponent. Hai started off extremely well, however, he could not keep up the high intensity throughout the match. David also displayed good form, and the score line was not indicative of the quality of the match.

Though we were dealt a crushing defeat, we can only look forward and forget about this loss, as we try to perform better against a consistent Newington team this weekend.

This week, High played the red hot school which is leading the ladder by a mile – Riverview. Their previous dominations over the schools coming second and third really proved their skilfulness and determination to win.

Thomas and Nelson played a strenuous match that went for over one hour. The quality of play was not reflected in the score line (an injustice suffered by most of our players), and the tough pair fought the last game to 8 deuces before relenting. Jordan’s lateness by over half an hour resulted in the forfeit of the Chapman-Jordan pair, which was regrettable. As with the first doubles, Henry and Kevin had numerous close games with them coming off second best.

In the singles, Thomas played an impressive match, at one point forcing a dive and a frustrated “What a fluke!” Chapman played some of his best tennis and dramatically reduced the number of double faults, but it was not enough to overcome his opponent. Henry kept pace with his opponent in the early parts of both sets, but lacked the oomph to really dominate the games. Nelson underwent a complete reversal of his game: he started smashing winners, missed his first serves, and forgot to approach the net. Pity it didn’t work. Without the warm-up of the doubles, Jordan went into his singles unprepared and he was sorely punished. Kevin had a great start in the first game, but choked, and gave points away to his opponent.

Despite the one-sided result, our performance was no worse than most of the other schools. Without a win and with only two weeks left in the season to get one, 2nd Grade matches are about to become a whole new ballgame!

16s MATCH REPORT
After a relatively good performance against St. Joseph’s, the 16As were at home to the GPS tennis powerhouse, St Ignatius College. The Riverview 16As side was well-drilled but unspectacular from 1 to 4. Nevertheless High had its chances in the doubles. Poor strategy cost us the number 1 doubles, but one couldn’t fault the effort of our second pair. Ben played a consistent and heavy hitter at 1, while Jason lost to a hard but rash hitter at 2. Alex served himself out of the match at 3, while Cary went down to an able opponent at 4. The mental component in tennis is probably greater than that in any other sport and if we can build in that area, coupled with our ever-improving stroke-play, the players in the side can go on to much bigger and better things in the next few years. Our immediate focus though will be on the fixture with Newington this week.

Despite losing all the As matches, it was pleasantly surprising to find that the Bs were more than capable of providing resistance and ensure SIC would not have a walkover. It was especially satisfying to see Daniel Chim winning so comfortably in his match. James Ip also backed up from the Cs to play as B4 and did not disappoint winning 6-4.

The Cs and Ds experienced one way traffic as usual in favour of High. Congratulations to Matthew Rusli for winning in style 6-0. The Ds bounced back from last week's massive losses to have a clean sweep winning all 6 matches.

1st Grade Match Report
Score: 36 – 86 (loss)

After coming off the recent win over Woolooware, High were confident of staging an upset against Joeys. However, High were given an immediate reality check with Joeys achieving a convincing victory over them.

High started the game well, denying the ball to Joeys’ star point guard and rep. player Lachlan Kirwan, and also making most of their shots, thereby gaining an early lead 13-12. However, High’s shooting percentage dropped dramatically for the rest of the match, allowing Joeys to slowly pull away through fast passing to their big men under the ring for easy baskets, for a big lead of 48-26 at the main break.

The third and fourth quarters were much the same story. High took too many shots under pressure, while Joeys slowly accumulated their points through solid play by their forwards. The game coming to a lacklustre end with Joeys comfortable winners 86-36.

It was an extremely disappointing performance from High who could not seem to rebound from the easier playing conditions posed in the CHS competition, and regain the consistency required in the GPS. However, some positives from the match were the performances from forwards Moussa Farhat and Wei Zhuang. Each pulled down a respectable 12 rebounds, with Moussa taking a charge as well. Rising star Justin Chow also made the most of his time on the court, running the floor well and starting some well constructed baskets.

The darkest gym in the GPS is home to St Josephs College, High’s opponent for round 11 of the GPS.

High started the game on the defensive end with a full court press once again, however the strategy was no surprise for Joeys and they calmly passed the ball and scored easy buckets. On the offensive side High were struggling from a tough man to man defence that limited our options and forced us to rush shots and decisions. The end of the first quarter however ended with a few solid shots to close the quarter 11-15 in Joey’s favour. The game proceeded with tight defence and evenly matched play from both sides. In the third quarter however the exhausted High side from great defensive pressure from their opponents opened the door for Joeys to engage in a run of easy fast break lay-ups.

This pushed the margin to as much as 15 points in the quarter. The game was still played with passion from the High boys and this was reflected in a mini run which showed glimpses of a great press and running game involving High guards, Alex Vertoudakis and Stuart Sugito. Full credit goes to forwards Eugene Wong, David Hu and Kenny Huang for containing one of the Joey centers who weighed about twice the combined mass of the High guards. Overall the game was played with High intensity but on the day Joeys came out winners.

Joeys were hacking and fouling the whole game but our guys were strong with the ball and sank our free throws. (We were in the foul bonus with 10 min to go in each half). It was a tied ball game with 3 min to go and we got stop after stop on defence and ran it down the other end for easy lay-ups. Special mention must be made for Michael Wang who had a roll of ‘and 1’ baskets which spurred his team on. Sydney high basketball is on fire!!!!

Our final result for Saturday's game was: Joeys 67, High 13. Joeys had very good young team full of kids who have obviously played for a while. We struggled to get the ball over half way and defence seems to be a concept not yet grasped. However, our boys fought hard. Andrew Ye top scored with 8 points, while Max Kobras hustled well for the whole time. Chris Morrow showed a lot of promise rebounding well and changing a lot of shots with his height and long arms. This team could have a lot of success in future years. All the boys listened very well and have a lot of potential. See you Thursday boys - lets work hard!

High vs Riverview 1st grade wins again!

After a disappointing performance against St Joseph’s last week, the High boys were eager to prove themselves against traditional basketball powerhouse St Ignatius.

Unfortunately, St Ignatius started the better of the two teams, running a disciplined transition game and rebounding well to build a solid lead 30-15.

However, the second quarter saw a dramatic change as High took control of the game. An effective press was employed, which led to many defensive stops and transitions baskets for High. Meanwhile, High’s half court offense was led by the accurate shooting from ever-reliable guard Harry Walker (17 pts.) and strong drives to the basket by small forward Dale Sun (17 pts.), who was able to wrong foot the defence numerous times with his superior speed. This enabled High to go on a 19-2 scoring run to enter the main break 34-32.

Despite High’s seemingly unstoppable momentum, Ignatius fought back well, scoring the first basket of the 3rd quarter, quickly levelling the scores. However, High’s forwards put out one of their best performances of the season. Moussa Farhat (10 pts., 7 rebounds) and Wei Zhuang (13 pts., 8 rbds.) dominated the area under the ring with help from the experienced Victor Wei. Meanwhile, an explosive 5 minutes from super-sub Lewis D’Avigdor saw him score 4 points and gather 3 steals, 3 rebounds and an assist to help High maintain the two point lead over St Ignatius entering the final break, 49-47.

Ignatius once again started the better of the teams in the 4th quarter, and similar to the 3rd quarter, they quickly levelled the scores. However, urged on by a large crowd of High supporters, the High boys lifted, and with several drives by Captain Francis Wong, were able to establish a 5 point lead. However, just as High looked comfortable to take out the match, with 10 seconds left, an Iggies player was fouled shooting a 3, resulting in 3 free throws. He made two, but with the remaining 10 seconds, High inbounded the ball, and when Captain Francis Wong was fouled, he was able to calmly put away the two free throws, and lead High to a very memorable victory 74-69.

Finally and very importantly, the High boys would like to give a HUGE thank you to Dr Jaggar, the statisticians, David and Hugo, the rowers and everyone who attended the 1st grade match after their respective games at Riverview. The support from the sidelines was phenomenal and definitely contributed to the win, thank you.

THE EASTSIDE DEBATING COMPETITION.
Round 4 will be on VS Grammar AT HOME the 24/03/06 (topic area- Domestic Politics) and the final heats are VS SCEGGS AT HOME on 31/03/06 (topic area- The Environment). Teams rotate throughout this competition and information about the teams and venues etc are emailed to you each week.

Model United Nations Assembly

Year 10 and 11 Student Opportunity
Model United Nations Assembly or MUNA is about developing appropriate minds for a peaceful and purposeful global future. MUNA events are mini versions of events negotiated in the same style and using the same protocol as in the UN. MUNA challenges young people to respect and tolerate differences of race, religion and nationalism whilst retaining their own individualism and the best of their national traditions. MUNA is a unique and important opportunity for students to research issues from different perspectives and gain a greater understanding of issues facing and shaping our world. It is a very challenging day for the students who have to synthesise their research with what is presented by other nations on the day and re-evaluate their stance with regard to what has been presented.

There are two MUNA events being held in our region in 2006.

Sydney Rotary MUNA
Saturday May 20th.
Nan Tien Temple, Wollongong
Year 11 students- two teams of three people This is a senior level competition in which students are allocated a nation to represent. Successful teams may go on to represent NSW and Australia at higher levels of the competition. Further details  

Randwick Girls High School MUNA
Thursday June 22nd.
Randwick Girls High School.
Year 10 Students- up to 12 students This competition is in its second year and is a great introduction to the protocols and conventions of the UN. Last year SBHS came a very close second place.

Preparation and research is the key to success in MUNA events. SBHS provides coaching by university students with experience in MUNA. No experience in debating is necessary.

Head of the River 2006 - Parents & Supporters Bus
