Clearance Forms Staff members are reminded that they have a reciprocal obligation to help students fulfil their obligations by checking off textbook / equipment returns even if a particular teacher is not available – eg HSC marking / leave. Boys frequently complain to me that they have been turned away at department level when attempting to get sheets signed. My suggestion is that a list of textbooks or equipment required for certain classes is located centrally so that multiple visits to staff rooms do not have to be made by boys trying to comply with Clearance Form policy.

New Financial Arrangements For 2007, I am proposing the notion of ‘Global Plus’ in respect of certain activities. The rationale for the exercise runs like this. Say 89% of 1140 boys paid $665 in a global fee. Total collections would be $674,709. Half of the fees collected are allocated to the sports program as per the agreed formula, say $337,354. Sports administration – GPS fees, umpires, entries, casual salaries, weights rooms, speed training – costs $100,000, leaving $237,354. Athletics is between seasons for everyone - $10,000, leaving $227,354. We assume boys play sports in winter and summer, so one season’s total would be $113,677. The proportion of global fees funding any individual sport is thus no greater than $100 per head per season. Therefore, big sports like basketball (280) and football (312) are being funded appropriately at $30,000 each. Cricket is growing in popularity and needs its $25,000 budget. Other sports, like rowing, sailing, tennis and rifle shooting, are inherently very expensive to operate. These sports repeatedly overrun their budgets due to rising costs of delivery. The idea of Global Plus is to levy a ‘co-payment’ on expensive sports once their budget is well in excess of the $100 / head benchmark. Boys doing sailing ($277/head from school budget) currently pay $200 per term to help defray the costs of boats, sails, safety equipment, entry fees, professional coaching and support vessel. The cost of rowing to the school budget is $475/head. It is reasonable that even though rowing is a most important GPS sport, a ‘co-payment’ of $200 per season is defensible. Target rifle shooting is even more expensive ($588), so $200 per season will be required from boys to fund it. Tennis is quite a large sport (140) but requires a heavy commitment to professional coaching and court time. It is currently absorbing $214 per head. A co-payment of $75 per season is necessary to develop tennis as a GPS sport. The school is not intending to move towards a ‘user pays’ method for funding its activities. The current system maximises opportunity and students’ choices. However, in the interests of equity, excessive expenditures on particular sports need to be borne in part by participating families. One of the great things about this school is that the 5% of families who cannot afford to contribute are covered anonymously by the generosity of the 90% who can. I would like again to exhort the 5% who can afford to pay but choose not to, to appreciate what a difference their contribution could make to the operations of the school. We are very conscious of the possibility that the introduction of co-payments could inhibit participation in expensive sports. We are developing an endowment fund to augment the Student Assistance Scheme so that, on application, co-payments could be funded for needy students. Talented sportsmen can also be funded tax deductibly via the ‘sports scholarship’ section of the Australian Sports Foundation, Sydney Boys High School Sports Development Project. In addition, donors can give to ‘sports development’ for the sport of their choice. Pooled funds will be used to fund sports development and assist individuals in meeting the extra costs of participating in the sport of their choice.
We hope that the introduction of Global Plus will be seen by our community as a fair and just
modification to the global notion of one fee covers all. Ultimately, all students and their
families will benefit from a broader distribution of the school’s funds. Secure Internet Browsing and EmailImportant message for ALL students. On 20 November, the school will be switched over to “Secure Internet Browsing and Email”, a DET initiative for all schools. Under this system all students and staff will be required to login to the DET Portal () for internet browsing and email. All students will be issued with a Department username and password. Also students will be issued with a Department email address. The email address will be in the format: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it The username and password will be needed by students to access this email address. It will also be needed every time you wish to browse the internet from school. Web based email accounts such as Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail etc will not function under this new system, and are completely blocked. When you wish to login to the school network, you will login as usual with the username and login that you do now. However, when you wish to browse on the internet, you will be prompted to enter your Department username and password. Also, if you wanted to check your Department email (ie. @education.nsw.gov.au) you will need to enter your Department username and password. Although the change over is 20 November, it is advisable that you login before this date, as the first time you login you will be required to change your password and you may experience difficulty with this if you leave it until after the 20th. You can find out your username and password from the SBHS Student Portal, accessible by clicking the “Students” link at the bottom of the Sydney Boys High website ().
All students must also read the DET Acceptable Usage Policy available from the SBHS Student
Portal. Notice to All Year 11 ParentsIn 2002 the current Year 12 parents hosted a Welcome Party for us and we are now returning the favour with a Farewell Party for them on Friday 17 November from 6.30 pm - 8.30 pm. All Year 11 parents are asked to make a contribution towards this event by either donating a plate of finger food (sandwiches/sushi/spring rolls/mini bagels/dips/fruits etc); a flower arrangement; or a small cash donation. Whichever option you choose, please contact us promptly so that the event can be organised.

big difference! From the Rugby Master’s DeskLast season several players took advantage of having a professionally fitted mouth guard made by O-Pro mouth guards. This company has offered the same service again next year. A qualified dentist will visit the school and take dental impressions, have the mouth guard produced and delivered to the school before the rugby season. O-Pro has suggested the best time to take the impressions will be in March 2007. The cost of the mouth guards is around $100 which can be claimed from most private health funds. If you would like to use this service, please see me before 30 November 2006 (O-Pro deadline).
I would strongly recommend all rugby players to use a professionally fitted mouth guard, whether

Ms J Brewer Rowing NewsThe senior selection was held on Friday November 3 at SIRC at Penrith. The day was a full one which required a monumental effort form the coaches, Oliver Wilson, Dave Luscombe, George Barris, Fin Murray, James Gerofi, the coaching director Mark Prater and the support team of Chris Watson and David Daish. Mr Daish commented that the return boatloading was amongst the best that he had seen. The school minibus left at 6.00am from the sheds to head to Penrith with Chris Watson and Mark Prater in charge of students. Dave Luscombe towed the boats from the sheds with David Daish watching carefully over the boats. All arrived together at Penrith to allow the sculling time trial to begin before 8.00am. Andrew Pham recorded the fastest sculling time with David Vien placed second followed by Ty Linegar and Tom Hurrell.. All other rowers had to go through seat racing to gain their place in the first and second VIIIs. The seat racing is based on margins between crews with different combinations and racing was very close which meant that the differentiation between the crews is very slight this year. Crews are provisional at this stage and the second selection for these crews takes place on January 16. Seat racing was made possible by the new coxswain Anton Jurisevic rising to the challenge and the efforts of Patrick Desmond from the juniors and the old hand Andrew Huang. Robbie Chen returning from injury filled in as the fourth coxswain. The day proved to be long but far less eventful than last year with the looming storm once again providing the inspiration to load the boats quickly for the return journey. The senior VIIIs will be competing in the Head of the Parramatta on November 18 and will be joined by a selection of other crews including the first Year 10 VIII which has been selected at this stage by a combination of ergometer scores and seat racing. Junior crews have only been placed in tentative crews at this stage and their formal selection will take place on the days outlined in the Rowing Calendar in late December. At the moment we are boating four Year 8 crews, from Year 7 boys, and seven Year 9 crews. We have enough rowers for two and a half Year 10 VIIIs so there is still room in the third Year 10 VIII for any interested Year 9 boys who can swim.
Tom Hurrell is this year’s Captain of Boats with Andrew Pham the Vice Captain. With the
assistance of Chris Watson and Joshua Hui we have been able to produce cds of Rowing photos of
2005-6 season. These are available from me for $5 and contain over 600 photos. LETTERS RE ABSENCE/LATENESS/ EARLY LEAVE If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Beringer, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by a parent or guardian with the name, date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up a leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school.

430 394. The High ArmadaRainy and cold weather kept some sailors off the water this weekend. In the Laser Division, Muhamed’s mast snapped even before the racing began. Quick work on land meant he was back on the water and ready to start with all the other competitors for race one. Jed was our other Laser sailor, and he kept up with the pack. By race three, both Muhamed and Jed were in the leading group, and we expect their results only to improve. The Pacers also had a great sail. Three Pacers hit the water. Once we were on the water, we were flying. Luckily the wind that kept us off the water last week had calmed down. We managed to get in 3 races. In each race we were getting better. For future races we need to pull on everything tighter and get the extra height we desperately needed. On another note our sailors are keen to race as a team. This is a different type of sailing race. The recognised format for Teams Racing involves racing in two handed dinghies, three a side (in our case Pacers). The two teams of three, race to try and achieve a winning combination of places - the lowest score wins. The scoring system is usually: 1st place - 1 point 2nd place - 2 points 3rd place - 3 points and so on. The team racer has two main weapons. Firstly, he can position his boat between the wind and his opponent, thus blanketing his sails and slowing him down. Secondly, he can use the right-of-way rules to his advantage, approaching his opponents in such a way that his competition has to change course or incur a penalty. To maintain order, and keep everyone out of the protest room, the racing is followed by umpires in small inflatables. If protested against, a competitor can accept his punishment and complete a 360° turn or he can wait for the umpires to give a decision which may result in a green flag for 'no penalty' or a 720° turn if the protest is upheld. Everything happens very quickly and tactical decision making and understanding of the rules is critical. On Mondays, after school, sailors are learning more about rules and sailing tactics. High is disadvantaged by the difference of our height and strength but by playing smart and training hard. The wins will come-keep working lads!!

An important change to the billing in the MUSIC PERFORMANCE PROGRAM This year’s Spring Music Festival will be a twilight concert starting at 5pm on Sunday the 19th of November in the school’s Great Hall. All members of the music ensemble program except for stage bands are to attend. Information and order forms are outside the music staffroom and tickets can be purchased through the main office and picked up from the music staff once payment is made. Tickets will also be sold on the night, but we encourage you to buy them prior to the performance so the concert will begin promptly on time. We also ask that all students bring a plate of food to share (tea and coffee will be supplied) as there will be a short interval in the middle of the concert. We look forward to a wonderful evening of quality performances by our talented musicians and hope you are able to attend to support their efforts and hard work.

Play was abandoned for the 5th XI, 3rd XI (Day 2), 16B, 15B, 14B and 14 C teams on arrival at the grounds. However the pleasing feature was the attendance by all boys selected with the exception of the 15 B team which for the second time had several boys missing without advice of their non attendance.
