High Talent
International Night Speeches from Shane Brown on the newly formed 探花视频 Development Committee and its role and from Charles Ovadia on the proposed Parent Mentoring Scheme were the only ‘business’ of the evening. Straw constructions from each table were judged. The flights of paper aeroplanes flown from the stage by a ‘pilot’ from each table were measured. Raffles and guessing competitions were decided and prizes distributed. The evening was well planned, suitably paced and entertaining. Congratulations to Valda Roser for the idea and to her committee of Ann Kurts and Barbara Taylor for a fine job. The organisation managed by Valda from conception to completion took 5 weeks – a great effort! We hope to stage an even bigger event next year.

International Night – “and a great time was had by all” Not only were there commercial belly dancers – there were a number of parents who were very competent in the art. There were not only the three Greek dancing boys from Sydney Boys High they were joined by a great rush of boys (and staff, and parents) all eager to show off their Greek dancing skills on stage. It was not only the children who made the f111’s fly off the stage and out into the audience but the fathers who could not resist getting into the act as well. There was a lit up, tap dancing Bollywood performer, who upstaged Paul Pang. Paul bounced back with some of his showiest piano pieces. There was a Chinese dragon and games of chance and skill and endless prizes. Jason Phu played the Chinese violin, (and after only one year playing it will sit for his HSC in this instrument this year), and there was plenty of food and good company. The President of the P&C, Shane Brown, also made a low key launch of the work of the Sydney Boys High Development Committee. This Committee, ably chaired by Professor Tailoi Chan-Ling is commencing a major Capital Works Drive to fund the building of the new library hopefully to begin in 2008 the 125th Anniversary of Sydney Boys High. A projected $1.75 million is needed for this. So much of the infrastructure of High is undergoing refurbishment and development that when it was put up to examine on boards at the back of the hall it was a matter of great pride for the school bodies – the P&C, the Senior Executive, the parents and the boys, who are always at the heart of every piece of fundraising, and who inspire everyone who is involved with them.
Huge thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of Valda Roser, who has inspired 6 years of parents
by her efforts at Sydney Boys High, for thinking of and putting on a night which officially
recognises the valued, multicultural nature of Sydney Boys High. The night was ably compared by
Simon Chan who is, incidentally, the architect who is drawing up the plans for the new library.

A Special Note to All Year 12 ParentsOn Friday 17 November (6.30pm - 8.30pm) the parents of Year 11 will host a cocktail party to farewell the Year 12 parents on behalf of the P & C and the whole school family. The function will provide an opportunity to say your farewells to each other and the school in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere and for the P & C to say thank you to you for the input you have had in the school over the last 6 years. Looking forward to seeing you at the function. Chess NewsLast Friday as Eastern Region Champions, the Junior High team defeated Southern Region winners Leumeah 4-0. This Friday they play in the Grand Final against Baulkham Hills, winners of the North v West Regions. The last High team to win the Junior division of the NSW inter-school competition was in 1991.

Wednesday 18 October 2006 at 7.00 pm The Weights RoomWelcome to those boys who have taken up the 1/2 term $20 offer and either re-commenced or begun their Strength Training journey. I remind you all once more that if you aren’t a currently paid up member doing an approved program then you will not be allowed to use the weights room during the forthcoming holiday period (holiday opening times to be published shortly). This week I want to make special mention of a couple of groups of young boys who have had their first taste of strength training, starting in the gym during the late weeks of term 2 and continuing through to this term. They are the year 8’s, or the mini me’s, as I call them. This group of dedicated young men has shown a real purpose in their application to strength train, and their interest to not only listen but also to also train ‘the right way’ has seen them make outstanding progress. To all you boys they are now the Weights Room ‘bench mark’ trainers and the reasons I refer to them as such are simple. I don’t have to keep my ‘second set’ of eyes on them continually to make sure a full program is completed or continually berate them for not adhering to the number one rule of ‘technique first, weight second’. They listen once, implement corrections immediately, and get on with it. They get in early, work together, plan their attack, work solidly, and then get out. The intensity is high, enjoyment high, commitment high and the progress exceptional. These boys have grown incredibly in strength and confidence during this period. Size will come in time. They will all have growth spurts and at different periods over the next few years the volume (not only in the gym but all activity) will need to drop to allow the growing body to adapt. But grow they will. What they have done is set their bodies up to grow, not shrink like the ill informed believe. Strength Training gives you control over your muscles and therefore your body. It excites the neural system and allows the brain to become more adept at controlling more of your muscle fibres than ever before. In the years to come I will watch this group with anticipation. Some of them already have experienced success on the sporting field. From here on in the sky’s the limit……………………. or is it?

NSW Schools Fencing League (Team) Results:
Whilst this year none of our teams qualified for a top three spot in the Schools League, there
were a number of well deserved individual medals. Division A
Division B The SBHS-A team was expecting to win a medal in the Schools Fencing League after our Bronze Medal performance in the AJ Ray Shield back in May. However it proved a challenging competition for our injury riddled team. To earn a medal in Division-A at least three uninjured fencers are needed, something we just did not have. Whilst SBHS-A convincingly eliminated NSBHS-A in the finals last Saturday we were then just as convincingly eliminated by St Aloysius-A, leaving us in 5th place. Thank you to Jeffrey Chan who despite his shoulder problems agreed to replace me in the finals due to my ongoing ankle injuries. The most valuable Division-A fencer of the Schools Fencing League was Yu Lin, given his outstanding team spirit, dedication to fencing and excellent effort under pressure in less than ideal circumstances. Yu Lin’s individual Bronze Medal is a highly deserved one. In Division-B, SBHS-D finished 8th after being eliminated by the number one team, St. Ignatius-B, with Samuel Sathiakumar qualifying for a Bronze Medal. SBHS-E finished a respectable 4th after comfortably defeating Trinity-B, losing to St. Ignatius-B and then to Arden. Congratulations to Julian Byrnes, the most successful Division-B fencer, who was awarded an individual Silver Medal for his efforts, and Addison Clune, who received a Bronze. SBHS-F finished in 13th place with Caillin McKay qualifying for a Bronze Medal, and SBHS-G finished 18th. The MINIS achieved 9th place after being defeated by Edgecliff-A. Ian Ho, Pasan Pannila, Albert Nguyen and Anthony Xu fenced enthusiastically and displayed great team spirit. Remember that you will still be MINIS in 2007, just more experienced ones.
It is important for all fencers to keep training in the off season and if anyone requires
information on UTS training, development camps or extra coaching please speak to me at school or
send me an email. On behalf of all fencers I would like to thank our MIC, Ms May, for her
dedication to fencing, our coaches, Alwyn Wardle, Tuko Maia and Chris Markey for their excellent
coaching, and finally all parents for their support. I am looking forward to see you all back at
fencing in 2007. Final Words From Fencing MICAt the close of the Fencing season this year, my first season involved with this sport, I would like to express my admiration for the High Spirit displayed by the fencers. Every Wednesday, when furniture had to be removed in the Great Hall, Fencers would just pitch in and do it, Senior Fencers waited on Saturdays for the Minis to fence their first ever bouts to offer them support and encouragement, fencers like Kevin Lee and Boris would wait until other teams were fully formed on Saturdays to ensure they would not be required to substitute before heading home and Patrick Duffy would lead fencers on footwork sessions on a weekly basis. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the 2006 Fencing Captain, Amadeus for his outstanding work. He was most dedicated, organised and generous with time, energy and encouragement to other fencers. I would also like to thank all of the parents who attended the Saturdays to cheer on and assist their son’s teams. It was most enjoyable to spend the Saturdays in their company. On a personal note, I wish to thank Gabriele Klocker for her amazing energy and organisational skills. Gabriele registered teams, reserved electrical equipment, trouble shot, ordered and took delivery of student’s fencing gear, booked coaches, patiently explained the fencing rules [over and over] to me, liaised with the fencing association and much, much more. Thank you also to our Coaches Alwyn Wardle, Tuko Maia and Chris Markey who have inspired our boys and to Ms Carol Werner for her work on Thursdays with Years 7 and 8 Fencers. Congratulations to all of the teams for their performance over the season. There were a number of individual medals awarded: Division A Bronze Medal: Yu Lin; and in Division B Silver Medal : Julian Byrnes and Bronze Medals: Samuel Sathiakumar, Addison Clune, Caillin McKay. I am looking forward to the next season and encourage students to participate in any camp opportunities that arise. Students who attended the camps displayed noticeably more skill and confidence.

ES Marks At the Scots / Newington Invitation Carnival the High Athletics Team was presented with the challenge of facing torrential rain and gale force winds, however upon arrival, it was announced that all Field events were cancelled. This meant it was up to the High track team to face the elements and compete bravely in those events which were not cancelled. In the 3000m young Harrison Lane showed good staying power to hang onto to the much older field and he could be one of High’s rising stars of the future. In the Hurdles the officials reduced the events to Championship only due to the dangerous conditions, however the High runners competed valiantly. The High boys were all ready for the 800m races with many having ‘warmed up’ in the rain. However the lightning and thunder put the nail in the coffin and the officials wisely made the decision to call off the carnival. Big thanks must go out to all those High boys who braved the weather to turn up at the carnival but remember that the GPS Championships, this Saturday, will be run no matter what the conditions, so be prepared.
This Saturday, 16th September is the Combined GPS Athletics Championship which will be held at
the Sydney International Athletic Centre at Homebush. I hope everyone, students, parents and
teachers will come out to SIAC to support the High Athletics Team and participate in one of the
greatest events in the GPS calendar. Following this there is a BBQ at Abbotsford for athletes and
parents of athletes. On Saturday I would like to see all the High competitors running, jumping
and throwing Personal Bests because every competitor we beat adds to our school’s points
tally. CHS Athletics ReportOver the course of 3 days High competed strongly at the prestigious Combined High Schools Athletics Championships. High came away with 3 medals, a solid achievement considering the pool of schools competing is many times larger than the GPS. The winds were strong, with tempestuous rains testing the boy's mettle, but High overcame the inclement weather to post impressive results. In the 12 years age group Michael Phung sailed to 4.37m in the long jump, the considerable winds making his result more incredible. In the 13 years our prodigious sprinter Shadman Ali was feeling under the weather but still managed 13.35 in -3.1m/s winds. In the high jump, Chris Morrow jumped 1.5m to come in the middle of a strong field of 20. In the 14 years Jeremy Ireland placed a credible 6th with a promising time of 4:48 in similarly atrocious conditions. In the 15 years Lachlan Street competed in the 200m and the hurdles, unfortunately not being able to snare a podium finish. The 15 year 4x100m relay team has been going from strength to strength, running a time of 46.34 and coming third to fellow regional rival Westfields. This gives, them along with James Barker, the track performance of the meet. In the 16 years Ty Linger galloped to a 2:04, a very quick time, a PB and not far off a national qualifier; unfortunately it was a very quick final, and he ended up in 6th place. In the 17 years Roger 'Buzza' Burrell was extraordinary in his placing of second in the open age group throwing 14.82m, a national qualifier, giving him the field performance of the meet from the High boys. He also competed strongly in the discus, throwing just under 40 metres for a courageous 5th. Come and support Roger as he is a firm favourite for the GPS Championships this weekend. Also in this age group James Barker ran the first event of the championships, the 3000m, and managed to come away with a 3rd place - beaten by the state record holder 1st and the National Cross Country Champion 2nd, it was a sterling effort. He backed up on Saturday to run the 1500m where he was just edged out for fourth. The boys should be commended on the results in such a high standard of competition - with each of the events having 20+ competitors, it was not an easy ask for our small group of boys, but High rose to the occasion. Thank you Mr Ayre for coming out to cheer on each of the boys in wind, hail or rain. Every boy should come and support High at the GPS Championships; it attracts the largest crowd for any athletics event in the nation. Come give our boys that extra push over the line.

Enthusiastically yours in Basketball, Music NotesThe year 12 HSC music performance exams were held last Wednesday and Monday with the students practicing diligently on their instruments leading up to their exams. We wish all our boys the best in their preparation for their musicology exams coming up. Well done on all your hard work and efforts so far in this busy time of the year, also a big thank you to Jason Phu and Paul Pang who performed brilliantly at the Inaugural Family Night last Saturday held in the Great Hall; a most fun-filled and entertaining evening.
China Music Tour 2007 Expression of Interest As well as participating in the Grand Parade in Wang Fu Jing and the music show of Olympic Opening Music, students will visit renowned tourist sites around Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Nan Jing. The anticipated cost of this tour will be approximately $2000 which includes all meals, accommodation, and entries. Congratulations Year 11 High Cricket BulletinNext Wednesday and Thursday we swing into nets and trials in our pre season which will put us in a solid position for the start of AAGPS Competitions in Term 4. I would like to welcome our new cricketers who are now joining the most consistent performing sport at High and well done to all who have returned from last season and prepared to carry on the task of helping High become a leader in the field.
