Athletics Season From the Library
The “Battle of the Libraries” Anirban Ghose and Tadeusz Davenport of Year 8 got busy with Dad’s architectural software over the last holiday and since and have produced a PowerPoint presentation of their draft of the proposed new library. Colour slides of their efforts will be on display in the library. The PowerPoint will be on the Student R Drive. It is good that Simon Chan our Architect who is to have his 3D model of the new library ready next week has a sense of humour. Simon Chan has been engaged by the Development Committee to produce a 3D model to use as a promotional tool for our newest fundraising effort for the new library - Simon’s model - the real thing - will also be up for everyone to see next week. If this Capital Works Drive is successful the new library looks like a distinct start up for the 125th Anniversary of Sydney Boys High in 2008. Thanks to the efforts of our Development Committee under the inspired leadership of Professor Tailoi Chan.

Recount of the Year 8, Semester 2 History Excursion to La Perouse After learning that we would not be going on a bushwalk to Henry Head and that there would be no sandcastle competition we were treated to a fantastic recount from Mr. Hannon of the events that happened to La Perouse and his men in Samoa. After this we watched a video called Benny and the Dreamers which was about the discovery of a remote Aboriginal community in North Western Australia and how they were sent to a mission where their standard of living fell drastically and they eventually returned to their home land. The video ended and everyone went outside to board the buses. We eventually arrived at La Perouse where the rain was falling intermittently. We climbed a muddy hill to see a grave in which lies the Ship’s Doctor of La Perouse’s ship who was severely wounded in a battle with natives in Samoa. We then proceeded to a monument to La Perouse that we attempted to sketch but the rain thwarted our artistic attempts. Conceding defeat to the encroaching storm we retreated to the warmth of the Cafes in which we had lunch. Due to the abysmal weather lunch was extended in the hope that it would blow away but, needless to say, it didn’t. We regretfully left the warmth of the cafes for the freezing wind and rain outside. To protect ourselves we formed huddles of umbrellas that kept out the worst of the weather until it was time to visit Bare Island. By this time the wind had intensified and the rain was driving into you at the horizontal. Resolutely we pointed our umbrellas into the wind (which was too much for some that gave way) and pressed on across the bridge linking the island to the peninsula. By the time we reached Bare Island we were soaked through (it would have been hard to get more wet swimming) but this wasn’t the worst of it. The Gates were locked and we had to make our way back across the bridge (which thoroughly soaked the other side of us) to the road where we waited for the buses to arrive. By the time the buses had arrived the weather would have passed for monsoonal and there was not a single square inch of any of us that had remained dry. On the way back to school there was about three centimetres of water on the floor (having drained off us) and every single person was visibly steaming. There was some singing from the back of the bus and there were some vain attempts to keep the windows from fogging so that we could see where we were going. We arrived back at school at around two thirty where everyone was dismissed except for those who had to stay at school who went to the hall and tried to dry off. After turning on all of the heaters we took off all of our wettest garments wrung them out and hung them in front of the heaters to dry. Mrs Valda Roser was kind enough to offer everyone a brownie as she passed through the hall going about her business and we were treated to some fantastic Piano by Paul Pang. I returned home at about eight thirty after debating to watch the news which showed footage of a tornado ripping across the bridge to Bare Island and taking the roof off one of the houses directly behind the café that we had been in only a half hour before hand. I was just thankful that we weren’t sucked up! Despite all of the wind and rain it was a fantastically fun excursion and I wish that more of them would turn out like it did.

Full minutes of the AGM will be posted shortly on the rowing page of the school website. Fencing UpdateOn the second Saturday of the Schools’ League the SBHS-A team defeated NSBHS-B 9:0 - taking only 8 hits, and giving 45 (Amadeus 15:2, Yu Lin 15:2 and Patrick 15:4). The next day of the competition will be a big day for the A team, as we are up against Hills Grammar, the clear favourite. SBHS-B went down 0:9 against Oxley-B and were then narrowly defeated by NSBH-A 4:5 with Khalil Amilbangsa giving his best performance yet, winning all of his bouts. In the Senior Division B, SBHS-D was defeated 1:8 by St Ignatius-B with Samuel Sathiakumar having the only win. The team then convincingly won 7:2 against Oxley-C with Samuel and Shek-Him Yuen winning all their bouts, and Patrick winning one of his. SBHS-G was up against a strong Trinity-B team, losing 1:8, with Andrew Wu winning one bout. The Mini team - Ian Ho, Albert Nguyen, Anthony Xu and Pasan Pannila - had their first taste of fencing for High. Their first match was against a more experienced SACS team which SBHS could not win. Disappointingly, Newington-D misread the timetable and the match was forfeited, resulting in a 9:0 win being recorded for SBHS. To make the Minis’ entry into competitive fencing less daunting each Mini was paired with a senior fencer - thank you to Yu Lin, Kevin Lee and Boris Zolotarev for staying behind and helping me with this. All SBHS-Mini fencers are very young novice fencers who will be eligible to fence again in the Mini category next year. Enjoy the team spirit, have fun and even if you do not win, this competition helps you to gain valuable fencing experience. By this time next year you will be a much more experienced team. The presence of so many parents and Ms May on the day was much appreciated, and I look forward to seeing you supporting our teams in the future.

Saturday 12 August 2006
High executed their game plan to perfection, not that we had one. The first set saw centre
blockers; Weiping Lu and Warren Trac control the net with multiple quick plays and HUGE blocks.
Jamie Tao also joined in on the fun with his first ever block in his career, hats off. Brilliant
setting by part time BMX cyclist Alex Le allowed outside hitters Sam Lee and Oli Chow to bombard
the timber with powerful spikes. Both players as well as utility David Dizon targeted gaps in the
flimsy defence. Before long High clinched the first two sets behind an onslaught of consistent
attacks. However in the third set Grammar rallied as luck turned their way. High regrouped with
the injection of Ping Du late into the game. His presence on court was enough to guide us across
the line in a ‘hard fought’ straight sets victory. From the Office

First of all the staff who have generously given up their Saturdays to coach and supervise up to five games on any one day. Long term supporters of GPS sport at Sydney High, Mr Pearson, Mr Watson, Ms Eggleton, Ms Dam, Mr Farrington along with a new member to the football family, Ms Evans. GPS football as we know it would not exist at High without your help. Also a big thanks to Mr Dowdell who set and packed up the Moore Park West fields every Saturday. Thanks to Mr Hayman, Mr Broadhead and Mr McQuillan for assisting at training sessions on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. I would like to acknowledge the parents who helped to coach teams. Greg Robertson and Steven Sheldon, Peter Reid, Vince Vlatco, Patrica Stefanidis and Frank Caetano for their work with the 13s teams. Also Peter Lee who has been a long term coach. It is great to see parents so actively involved in sport at High. I would also like to thank the old boy coaches who so kindly gave up their time to come back and help out High football. Max Kletski, Michael Allies, Pat Chen and Jason Vongratsavai with the 16s. Andrew Bennie Przmek Zajic, Steven Lau and Kon Moltchanski with the 15s. Tim Wu, Pu Shen Xu, Nathan Raheja and Simon Lai with the 14s. I hope you all enjoyed the season and will continue your association with the boys next year. A special mention must go to Nic Apoifis who coached Second grade and assisted with First grade. Nic has been involved with football at High for close to 13 years as both a player and coach. His passion and dedication to the game is an invaluable asset. A big thank you to the boys who refereed games this year. On any given Saturday High may need to supply referees for up to 20 games. The majority of boys who did referee often did two or more games as well as play their own games! For me it is one of the most pleasing aspects of being involved with football at High, seeing boys take on this significant responsibility. Finally thanks to High’s first grade captain and resident football tragic, Eddy Blaxell. Eddy’s passion for the game is unsurpassed and he has been a great help organising the grade teams as well as referees. The last round of the GPS season against Newington College was played out under bright, sunny skies. Both High’s first and second grade teams had the chance to upset Newington’s dual premiership hopes. First grade found itself under early pressure from skilled opponents and were down 3-0 after 20 minutes, although each goal had an element of luck or controversy. The second half saw a stronger display by High but despite the improved share of possession High was unable to breach the Newington defence. The final 4-0 score line was not a true indication of the closeness of the two teams. Well done to all the boys who played first grade this year. You displayed the colours of Sydney High with pride and honour. The Second grade fixture was hard fought affair ending in a 0-0 draw. As has been the case all season High was able to create several promising attacking raids only to falter when a composed finish was required. After ending up only just one win from the premiership, the boys may well look back at the year as one of missed opportunity. Once again Daniel Campion was outstanding in defence along with Kevin Kim.

Referees course Quote of the Week
“Football is not a matter of life or death, it’s more important than
that.” High Cricket BulletinThe 2006 / 2007 Season is rapidly approaching and an exciting programme has been established to cater for all of our cricketers as we embark on a course to establish High’s credentials as a force in the AAGPS Competitions. We have had an encouraging response for coaches and we welcome back some ex students who met recently and are aware of our goal to see High teams perform at their potential best in competition.
TEAM NOMINATIONS PLAYER INCENTIVES – In past seasons due to the lack of a full compliment of team coaches many of our cricketers have remained static in teams when they deservedly could have been promoted to a higher grade in their age group. This season with coaching support, players will have that opportunity to be rewarded for consistent performances. In teams where we have junior cricketers (Years 7 – 9) who are experiencing GPS cricket for the first time, or who have had limited opportunities through lack of previous regular coaching, will see teams nominated in age groups of a comparative standard. The result of this move will enable our less experienced players to enjoy their cricket as well as learning from their experiences in competition with other boys of similar abilities. NEW CRICKET NETS – The great news is that our new nets are on the way with a proposed commencement in the first week in September (subject to weather conditions) and in full service for Term 4. There will be 4 synthetic practice wickets with 7 metre run-ups, an overhead net cover and safety nets to contain the balls when players are driving during sessions. We now have access to an additional bowling machine and will make use of both machines to improve techniques under the guidance of batting coaches. SPORT AFTERNOONS – This season teams will practise as a group on sports days and coaches will attend on Saturdays to conduct the team’s match plans and assess strategies for future practices. There will also be post school practice sessions on a rotation basis for Years 7, 8 and 9 teams which will be advised in advance.
CRICKET COMMITTEE AGM The Cricket Committee AGM will be held on WEDNESDAY 30th August at
6.00 pm in Room 901 in the Gymnasium. The Agenda will be as follows Election of Office
Bearers CENTRE WICKET SELECTION TRIALS – This season we will be conducting Centre Wicket cricket trials for Year 7, 8 and 9 team selections on SATURDAY 23rd. Laurie Heil Basketball: Shooting Hoops
THE COMING SEASON The results of High Basketball have been on the rise and it has shown that even the slightest improvements make a difference on court. If every team managed to score an extra 8 points last year, an extra 27 games would’ve been won in last year term 4 alone! That only requires 2 extra points from 4 people within the team! So shape up a little and let’s get those close games going High’s way.
