High Talent
Plain English Speaking Awards State Final The impromptu speeches were on the topic ”the good life”. After just three minutes of preparation, the standard of the speeches was impressive, with most contestants able to produce a sustained coherent speech on demand. Kelvin linked experience of the good life to the isolation of the nuclear family and the social problems associated with the consumerist society. Others talked about those who could and could not share the benefits of the good life – children in poverty, baby boomers getting it all at the expense of their children, third world economies as Nike slaves for western consumption or politicians endangering the future for today’s youth. I enjoyed the experience and thought the Grammar boy deserved his win. Kelvin represented us with style, flair and intelligence.

Investing in our Schools Bisley 2006During the end of term holidays, members of the ̽»¨ÊÓƵ Cadet Unit (Sgt Anthony Ho, Cpl Chris Lam, Cpl Denis Stojanovic, Cdt Ishan Nadkarni and Cdt Phil Wu), Knox Grammar Cadet Unit and 323 Air Cadet Squadron formed the 2006 Australian Defence Force Rifle Team and participated in an international shooting competition against cadet units from all over the United Kingdom. Members of the Royal Canadian Army Cadet Rifle Team also made an appearance in the Inter Services Cadet Rifle Meeting, School’s Meeting matches as well as various sightseeing tours. The team stayed two nights at Randwick Barracks where everything from final preparations to new friends were made. A farewell reception was held at Sydney High followed by a flight lasting 20 undesirable hours. Activities in England involved a full day of sightseeing London, a visit to the Fleet Air Arm museum, tour of the Royal Marines Commando Training Facility where we were given a demonstration of the strenuous obstacle course Royal Marine recruits are put through and an introduction to the weapons of the Royal Marines followed by the weapons handling of the British Standard Infantry rifle (SA-80). Last but not least, an educational trip to the historical dockyard, Portsmouth. In terms of shooting, Australia performed exceptionally well against the foreign cadets. A total of seven gold medals and one silver were won, raising Australia’s reputation as excellent marksmen to a new level. Sgt Ho and Cpl Lam each won a gold medal while Cdt Wu won a silver. Competitive shooting may have been the major event, but there were also optional shoots like shotgunning, gallery shooting and air pistol shoot outs. The 2006 Bisley trip was an overall success and wouldn’t have happened without the effort and time of Major Knowles (Commanding Officer, Sydney High), Captain Billingsby (Commanding Officer, Wollongong) and our coach Justin Hill (former High student).
Any individual interested in the Bisley trip are advised to join cadets and rifle shooting today.

Fencing NewsThe NSW Schools Fencing League at Newington started well for Senior Division A, even though the SBHS-A team went into the competition severely weakened. Jeffrey Chan had to withdraw because of a shoulder injury and my ankle is still nowhere near fully recovered. However, SBHS-A defeated St Andrews-A 8:1 and Newington-B 6:3. The best performances were by Amadeus Klocker (83%, +13) and Yu Lin (83%, +11) and we should be well placed in this competition providing there are no further injuries. SBHS-B fenced well against Newington-C and won 5:4, but were then defeated 3:6 by a strong St Aloysius-A team. Best performance was by Kevin Lee (67%, +4). In the Senior Division B, SBHS-D won 7:2 against Newington-F and was then narrowly defeated by Trinity-B. Best performance was by Samuel Sathiakumar (83%, +11) and congratulations to Patrick Tang and Zenghui Lu for their first wins. SBHS-E had an unexpected but narrow loss against SGS-D, however they recovered to defeat St Andrews-B 7:2 and Trinity-C 8:1, with the best performance by David Tran (83%, +14). SBHS-F was narrowly defeated by SGS-C 4:5, and then suffered a clear 2:7 defeat at the hands of Newington-D. SBHS-G was defeated by Newington-F 2:7, with Harry Zhuang and Andrew Wu each winning one bout. Thank you to all of the team Captains who have sent in their reports. It was great to see that all teams arrived on time and very encouraging seeing so many parents supporting High. A special thank you to our MIC, Ms May, for her presence on the day. The Minis will have their first matches this Saturday and should arrive at Newington no later than 11.15. Please report to me immediately so that I can help you to get started.
REMEMBER: All fencers should regularly check the fencing noticeboard and the NSWFA website:

The fifth of August was a very, very rainy day. The under sixteens made their way through the
cats and dogs to Riverview, competing with St Ignatius. The match itself was very ordinary, with
High wining in solid sets. Matt Chan once again passed the balls well, allowing Shorson and
Thomas to set accurately. Nishan and Ritam scrambled the balls excellently, whisking shanks back
in the right direction. And as usual, everyone did their jobs well, except for those who did
their jobs extremely well. Many attempted and succeeded in producing backcourt spikes, which
zoomed at our opponents at an incalculable speed. The speed of Daniel Shan’s spikes was
that incalculable speed times ten to the power of forty-two. Danny’s jump serves were
packed with the oomph of a very hard jump serve. However, some of the serves hit the back of
players … on the same team. On the last set, Mr Kaye, re-inverted and reinvented our
playing scheme, placing players into a position other then the one they are used to. It started
off rockily, but we eventually found the foothold we were looking for, wining the final set with
a close 20-25. Sydney Boys High School Parent/Carer Survey

Both games had to be relocated to Weigall Sports Ground, which was in surprisingly good condition considering the rain. First grade’s hopes were boosted with the late inclusion of Burak Akinci. However, this was balanced out with the late withdrawal of Nick Hannon, forcing Alvin Leung to back up immediately after a tough second grade game. Alvin is another year 10 student who has handled the step up in class with aplomb this year. His efforts in this game belied the fact that he had already played a full game prior. The initial exchanges were tough to say the least. Jeremy Luscombe came off second best after a heavy collision and was forced to sit out the rest of the game, thus further depleting the High’s reserve stocks. Ritchie Xu and Tom Castleton were adroitly rotated with Leung to shore up the depleted right hand side. All three played staring rolls, displaying impressive fitness and commitment. High had by far the best chances of the first half, but were unable hit the target from several promising positions. Nil-nil at half time. There was a noticeable steely determination about the boys in the huddle. Captain Blaxell led the half time talk, coach Gifford could hardly get a word in, constantly being interrupted by a clearly pumped up Blaxell and co. The second half saw High constantly making the play. Their efforts to get to the loose ball and harass the Grammar ball carriers resulted in several turnovers of possession. This pressure finally told on Grammar and High’s efforts were finally rewarded with a well deserved goal to Ed Curran. Several further chances to seal the game went begging, resulting in a tense last few minutes. Pleasingly, High hung on to clinch a thoroughly deserved and moral boosting victory. Second grade put in one of their most polished displays of the season, with a convincing 3-0 victory. Coach Apoifis shuffled the line up around looking to find the strongest combination, with a view to next year. D’Arcey Blaxell scored a brace of goals and had a strong game in general. Pat Locke bagged the other and displayed some very encouraging skills, importantly controlling the flow of possession in and out of the midfield. Other strong performances included Captain Kevin Kim, who set up a brick wall of defence, giving very little for the Grammar forwards to get excited about. The ‘Safety net” of Daniel Campion and Chong Shao at the back made sure that any danger that did get through was quickly defused. Tom Castleton and Ritchie Xu were both outstanding in attack and defence. All games this week are against Newington College.
