School Within a School – double assembly initiative "Today is a unique event in that we are beginning a new arrangement for assemblies. We are inaugurating one of the first phases of our ‘School Within a School’ structure by making two part assemblies for juniors and seniors. We plan to double up on important presentations, introductions and guests where appropriate, yet have more specialised content for the two part context. We hope to provide more opportunities for leadership, for acknowledgement and recognition, and for student participation, by separating the ceremonies in this way. Assemblies provide public occasions to honour successful teams and individuals who have achieved things worthy of our acclamation, as we are able to today in volleyball, debating and mathematics. Most importantly, it allows every student to attend assembly because we can seat half the school each time. "We honour debating at this time each year because their official GPS season is about to start. The impending commencement of a GPS competition is the fundamental rationale behind holding assemblies for summer and winter sports, rowing and athletics. These rituals demonstrate our ongoing commitment to the GPS fraternity. Debating is a long standing GPS competitive activity alongside sports. It predates football, basketball and tennis in GPS history. We have knock out competitions in various sports and co-curricular activities throughout the year, but our school is part of a prestigious association of schools and we focus on that connection primarily in our assemblies. "Debating and public speaking are fundamental skills supporting people with capacities to persuade, inspire, motivate, or move others. History’s great leaders more often than not gathered people to their causes through charisma transmitted through powerful speech. "The rhetorical arts were highly prized in classical Greek society as fundamental to the democratic process. Politicians today have the startling ability to persuade themselves (and intermittently the majority of the public) of contradictory policy positions – without the blink of an eye, falter in the voice or guilty flush of the cheek. "A vital part of modern education is to develop capacity to understand an argument. Debating helps students to do that. Debating as an art derives much of its challenge from the opposite possibilities in any proposition. It requires the ability to take on a role, to become a true believer in ideas, arguments and emotions that may be antithetical to what you really, think, argue, or feel. You are asked to be an intellectual chameleon. You need to be an instant expert on current affairs, economics, sociology and psychology. Debating training and participation provide students with a balanced understanding of the inherent complexity in life and an enhanced proclivity to perceive alternative points of view and approaches to problems. These skills are highly prized in the world of work. Moreover, the ability to speak in public is a valuable and respected social skill. I applaud the great participation in our program. "I congratulate all our debaters today and wish them well for the season. On your behalf I want to thank Ms Brewer, our fine coaches and the debating committee for making High debating the fine program that it is. Accomplishment involves trying and making mistakes and trying again. As Abraham Lincoln once declared 'your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other thing'. High goals require high resolve to attain. "It gives me great pleasure to introduce our guest speaker this morning. Alex Bodman was a highly involved and successful debater and public speaker while at High. He was the first contestant to win both the junior and senior divisions of the highly prestigious Plain English Speaking Competition. He was a member of the winning team in the Commonwealth Senior Debating Competition and captained the most successful CHS team in the competition’s history. Alex enjoyed periods of extensive international travel before completing a degree in media arts. He won the UNSW Short Film Competition and was runner up in the National Student Union Film Competition. Alex has since travelled through Africa by public transport – an impressive feat indeed. He is currently Senior Writer for Singleton Ogilvy Advertising. As a talented old boy orator, debater and global traveller, please welcome Mr Alex Bodman." Mr Bodman spoke fluently, conversationally yet eloquently around the theme: success is fleeting, failure is transitory. He adroitly explored the academic and sporting implications of this aphorism. He also contrasted school life with after school scenarios of success and failure. He encouraged the boys to be passionate and to commit to what they liked doing in academics sport or co-curricular activities but also to maintain a perspective of school as a segment of life.
Investing in our schools grant has arrived! Video FestivalRose Bay Secondary College is hosting their 8th Annual “V-Fest” Student Video Festival at the Chauvel Cinema Paddington on Tuesday 18 September 2006. The festival has been designed to promote and embrace the wealth of media talent being created in both public and private high schools in Sydney. There are two categories for entries: The Junior Section (Years 7-10) and the Senior section (Years 11-12). There are no limitations on content as the entries are judged only under these two categories. The only MUST is the inclusion of the V-FEST letter “V” somewhere in the action. This letter could be found somewhere in the environment or could be an actual letter “V”. All students need is a camera and a passion for film! If you are submitting a video project in any subject for the HSC, this could be entered for competition (just don’t forget to edit a “V” somewhere in the action on a copy tape). Entry forms are available from the Art Department or from Ms Brewer.
Entries close at 5.00 pm on Thursday, 7 September 2006. Educational Access SchemesMost institutions that participate in the University Admissions Centre (UAC) have an Educational Access Scheme (EAS) for applicants who have experienced long term educational disadvantage. To qualify applicants must demonstrate that their educational performance during Years 11 and 12 or equivalent have been seriously affected by circumstances beyond their control. This year students applying for Educational Access Scheme (EAS) for Universities in 2007 will need to download their booklets and applications forms from the website: . The responsibility for sending the finalised application to UAC by 30th September 2006 rests with the individual student.
Students who require a Statement of Support from the school counsellor should make the counsellor
aware of their situation as soon as possible. The completed EAS form will need to be in to them

Thinking of Trialling for Representative Basketball Teams in 2007? Elite Squad is coached by rep coaches and will prepare you for the trials by exposing you to elite skills, increased training tempo and higher expectations than you get at your domestic teams training. Elite Squad is a training program for aspiring representative players and current representative players during the off-season. The training sessions are aimed at improving and maintaining individuals skills/techniques and current fitness levels. The Elite Squad is highly recommended to athletes wishing to gain an edge over competitors before the upcoming Representative Trials.

SBHS. Fencing UpdateLast Saturday the NSW Schools Senior Individual Championships were held at Newington. High was represented by six fencers - congratulations to Patrick Duffy who finished highest with a 7th place, followed by Jeffrey Chan 8th, Yu Lin 16th, Amadeus Klocker 18th, Boris Zolotarev 30th and Kevin Lee 37th. Thank you to our MIC, Ms May, for giving up her Saturday to cheer us on. In the July holidays two High fencers (Patrick Duffy and Yu Lin) competed in the National Championships, Yu Lin finishing 55th and Patrick 75th. The Schools League kicks off on the 5th of August and High will have a strong presence with eight teams, including one Minis team. However, a number of junior and senior fencers indicated that they would not be available in September, and hence some missed out on selection altogether. The teams have now been registered with NSWFA and are up on the fencing noticeboard (outside the Welfare room). As soon as the timetables are available I will compile the data and put it up on the fencing noticeboard. It is very important that all fencers check this noticeboard regularly for changes. It is your responsibility to know which team you are in, find out when you are scheduled to fence and to make sure that you arrive at the correct time at Newington so that no matches have to be forfeited. Note: You have to arrive at Newington half an hour before your scheduled starting time, report to the NSWFA desk, collect your electric equipment and gear up promptly. The first fencer in each team is the one in charge of that team; he registers the team order prior to the match and advises the referee when he wants to bring in the reserve. Reserves must also be allowed to fence, whether or not there is a team member missing. If this is your first time at a fencing competition, please report to me at Newington, or to Ms May if I am fencing, and we will take you around and help you.
IMPORTANT: The school pays for electric equipment hire only, hence if you forget to bring your
jacket, under-plastron or mask you will have to pay for the hire of these items yourself.

Last Saturday saw a Sydney High team riddled with injury make their way to Scots’ home
ground, confident of adding another win to its high standard GPS record. After accurate sets from
Alex and Victor and a barrage of quick balls down the middle run by Ping L and Danny the Scots
side was disinherited. With consistently perfect passing from Jamie and David the game was soon
over and High won in three sets. Handshakes were exchanged and the team went home with high

It was heartening to see the enthusiastic support given to the 1st XV last Saturday at
Northbridge by our junior players and their parents. As the game had been transferred to an away
fixture, there were no junior matches and the weather looked threatening throughout the day, it
was an effort “above and beyond” but one appreciated by the firsts. The biggest cheer
of the day occurred when Alex Vertoudakis crashed over for his try. A number of people commented

Award last Thursday. Both boys delivered sophisticated and insightful speeches. Congratulations

DEBATING SUPPORTERS GROUP - MEETINGS The 2006 Debating DinnerTraditionally the Debating Dinner is held on the Saturday after the final GPS debate and celebrates the strength of debating talent at High - 2006 will be no exception. This year’s Debating Dinner is being held on Saturday September 2nd in the Great Hall at 6pm.
Last year the dinner at the Outterside Centre was so successful it sold out! So this year we have
moved (back) to the Great Hall in order to ensure everyone is able to attend. The cost of the
dinner will be $30 per adult and student. Payment for the dinner can be made at the main office from Monday July 26th until Friday August 25th. The 1st and 2nd grade fixtures were moved to Northbridge to a field that was barely fit for play and certainly unsuitable for fast, open play. First grade suffered a 3-2 loss. As has been the case for most games this year, they displayed typical High spirit and fought back twice from being a goal down. Outstanding performances were headed by Lachlan Street in goals, who continually denied the Shore attack with a technically superb display. It is easy to forget that Lachlan is still only in Year 10 and was eligible for the U15s Bill Turner Knock Out Competition! Jeremy Luscombe added spark to the front line, consistently creating opportunities with his pace and tenacity. Ed Curran stood up and directed the team with a typically wholehearted display. Gehan Karunaratne was once again a major headache for the Shore defence using his speed and skill to consistently get in behind the line. Congratulations to Long Chen for breaking his GPS goal scoring duck. I always knew he was a striker. Second grade kept in contention for the title with a gritty 1-0 win. Impressive performances came from George Lo up front who belied the difficult conditions with several scything runs through the Shore backline. Tom Castleton followed up a shot parried by the keeper and was rewarded for his efforts with the only goal of the game. Chong Shao was solid in goals, fearlessly putting his body on the line on numerous occasions. D’arcy Blaxell signalled his return to the team with a blistering drive that was tipped over by an alert Shore custodian. Thank you to Ed Hibbert and Martin Lunney who acted as assistant referees for the games.

On the last day of term two many of High's finest athletes went to Hensley Athletic Field to
compete against some of the best competition our area has to offer. After being deferred due to
weather from the week before, there hadn't been a great improvement, with rain showering
throughout the day. Despite this setback, there were many excellent performances that deserve
mention as Athletics 2006 heats up. Lachlan Street, Michael Phung, Benjamin Wang and Shadman Ali
were some of the standouts on the day, however, there were many others in fine form. Mention must
also go to athletes who competed in the 12s, 13s, 14s, 15s and 16s relays, all of which will be
competing at the Regional Carnival to be held on the 7th and 8th of August. After some pleasing
results, we can only hope that High can build on these results and be much more competitive this
season as we strive to better our last year’s performances in the GPS competition. Sydney Boys East Area Athletics Team

Sydney University The Great Sydney Boys High Piano Competition The first ever piano competition at SBHS will be held this term from week 3. Due to time restraints the competition was postponed, please see below for further details. Students interested in entering can still submit forms to the music staff by Friday 28th of July 06 (End of week 2). There will be great prizes for the winners of the competition. We encourage all pianists to enter as this is a great performance opportunity and a wonderful learning experience. Solo performance pieces can range from any genre (Baroque to Contemporary) with time limits for each year group listed below.
