High Talent
Jumped on at Joeys In rugby, I saw some spirited attempts by our boys, who never gave up against bigger, stronger and faster opponents. A lack of technique when tackling and a loss of shape in defence, allowed Joeys to break our line by running wide or switching to an inside ball to forwards running at opposing angles to the drifting defence. When in rolling mauls or ‘pick and drive’ plays, our boys worked well together and were effective when using their numbers intelligently. However, at Joeys, you need to be patient and to control the ball for as long as you can. We were unable to do that except in the 2nds v 6th match where the play was more even and the score line very respectable. In first grade our boys gave a courageous display and never gave up trying, even when the game was unnecessarily extended by five minutes. Honour in defeat against Joeys is a rite of passage for High boys – we have been enduring it for all but a handful of the last 100 years. I was proud of the character they all displayed.
A New School Library – How much do we really want one? We have it within our power as a school community to fund this project. We will need to change our culture to do so. If we wait for the ‘government’ to fund a new library we will be repeating the history of the six generations of High communities who have wanted a new library before and who expected the ‘government’ would build them one. Some of our GPS competitors raise twice our total target in one year. We have the numbers and community resources to get what we want.
We have a 探花视频 Development Committee operating. It is chaired by Year 9
parent, Assoc.Prof. Tailoi Chan-Ling. Its purpose is primarily to raise funds for school purposes
– principally a new school library. The committee is comprised of the Principal, the
president of the OBU, the President and Vice-President of the P & C, School Council
representatives and our Fundraising Officer, Valda Roser. The committee has as one of its goals
to encourage our majority Asian background school community to engage with the ethos of the
school and to broaden their support for school objectives. To be effective, this committee will
need parents who can communicate to our majority community to raise awareness of our purposes and
projects. We will also need fresh ideas about how we can reach out effectively to sell our
self-help message to them. The next step will be to find ways of brining them together to
generate communal commitment to the cause. We have called upon each Year Group Committee
to provide the communication mechanism to achieve that objective. We need people who believe in
the self-help principle to assist us to make a difference. If you are such a person, please email
me or contact your Year Group representative. Let this be the last 6-year generation of High

All students will receive further information about Parent/Teacher evening next week. Students
will finish classes at the conclusion of period 5 (2.15 pm) on Thursday, 29 June. 2006 Chinese EisteddfodIt was a day to remember. On Saturday 3rd June, Sydney Boys High entered the prestigious National Chinese Eisteddfod. As I walked through the gates of Burwood Girls High, I could see the contestants from ages 4 to over 18 rehearsing their poems. When I walked to the Registration Area, I could see an enthusiastic group of Sydney Boys High students eager to begin their recital. We strolled into the hall and prepared to go on stage. The 13-15 year old age group started at 9am. High entered two teams, a Year 8 and a Year 9 group. The Year 8 group had to go first. We walked up the stage, willing to show off your hard work. In front of a panel of three judges and the huge crowd we bowed. Oops! It was our first time entering this Eisteddfod and weren’t familiar with the rules. We bowed before the bell rung. The ringing sound signalled the start of our recital. We had to deliver a poem named “The wishes of a boat”. We performed as if we understood the poem extremely well. As we finished the recital, I could see the joyful faces. We were impressed with our efforts. We all knew that we had done a wonderful job and had tried our best. We sat down as we listened to other people present their poems. They were excellent. Everyone paid attention to them carefully, learning the ways in which they recited their poems. Result time! We were convinced that we had won because we had high self-esteem and did very well. OH NO! We came second. We sighed as we walked upstairs to take our award for the hard work which was put in by everyone. We rehearsed every lesson and also at lunchtimes on a weekly basis. We knew deep down that we were the best. Even though second was a fabulous result, it was first that we wanted. However, there is always next year to improve. Next were the individuals. That was a great experience. Even though few High entrants had won prizes, I could tell from their faces that they had tried their best. Hopefully next year, with experience, we can improve on our results.

enjoyable and valuable experience for everybody. From Chess
Round 5 of the inter-school championship saw the Senior team go down 1-3 to a Fort Street A team
featuring the no. 1rated student in New South Wales. In Intermediate grade our A’s
continued their good form 4-0 to St. Andrews and the B ’s defeated Fort Street B 2.5-1.5.
Junior A’s are still unbeaten after a 4-0 defeat of Trinity Grammar C, the B team had a
3.5-0.5 win against Marcellin B, C’s enjoyed a bye and the D team were victors over St.
George Girls High 3-1. P & C Parking Day

From the Rugby Master’s DeskVeritate et Virtute – truth and honour. It was on display in last Saturday’s 1st XV match at Hunter’s Hill for all to see. The truth was St Joseph’s were a very good side and they brought their “A” game to play, as expected. The honour was in the High performance, sticking to their game plan, supporting their team mates and playing with courage and commitment, as expected. Both teams were warmly applauded at the end of the match, generating a feeling of pride amongst all the High supporters – students, parents, staff, friends and old boys alike. Congratulations to the young men of the 1st XV who stood tall in the sky blue and brown last Saturday.

you on Saturday 19 June at McKay for the King’s School matches. Rugby Committee Meeting SummaryThe third meeting of the SBHS Rugby Committee for 2006 season was held on 31/5/06. The following is a summary of the meeting: Attended: Rob Fetherston, Serdar Bolen, Kel O’Keefe, Susan Udall, Adrian Vertoudakis, Christina Chow, Andrea Freiman, Geoff Stein. Apologies: None Rugby Website 2006 – Website is up and running. Advertising fliers will be posted at the next rugby parking day as well as at Randwick Rugby Club. Rob Lack (Class of 1978) is donating the first 100 membership key rings OPRO Mouth Guards – Four boys took advantage of the offer. Hopefully the feedback is positive and we can nurture this association. Chris Whitaker’s Last Home Game – 28 boys represented Sydney High at Chris Whitaker’s last Waratah home game of the regular competition. A colour of some of our boys photo appeared in the Daily Telegraph. Treasurer’s Report – Account transactions for April and May were tabled. Current account prior to meeting was $8507.99 Victor Sports has donated $2000 worth of medical and training equipment. Future dealings will be done at very competitive prices. 2007 headgear and shoulder pad deal may be arranged. Possible fundraiser for the committee. High Notes in future should make reference to major school assemblies and include a parent invitation. Students are not passing the invitation on to their parents. Cake and Coffee Fliers to go out to junior teams prior to home games. Donations to support canteen fundraising. BBQ Voucher/Encouragement Awards to continue this season. Awards to be supplied to junior coaches for distribution. 1st XV Afternoon Tea to be coordinated by S. Udall. The Committee thanked to Sue for taking on this job. Sue will be seeking assistance from other 1st XV parents. Year 12 XV, in school uniform, are welcome at the afternoon tea and will be expected to contribute to the afternoon tea similar to the 1st XV. Physiotherapist has been hired, at late notice, for two McKay days at a cost of $45/hour.
Next meeting Wed. 28th June 2006, 6pm in Room 901. All welcome. From PD/H/PE:“This is what science says is the most effective strength training for kids” – Raphael Brandon Is it bad for children? Puberty provides a great window of opportunity for boys to develop strength through training because of high testosterone levels. If regular training is maintained, the large possible gains at this time last into adulthood. Many coaches and parents believe that strength training is bad for children and even potentially dangerous. For instance, a myth exists that heavy weight lifting too young will stunt growth. There is little research to suggest that weight training for pubescent boys is unsafe – in fact, most of it confirms that weight training is one of the safest exercises they can do. A child is more likely to be injured on the football pitch, tennis court or running track than in the gym. Peak performance – Coaching young athletes p55 – 60
We have a great strength training facility on site, at very reasonable rates, under the
coordination of Jason Tassell, a highly experienced and qualified strength and conditioning
coach. I would recommend that every student at some time during their school life get undertake a
strength development program, the sooner the better. You will be amazed at the benefits you will
gain. Fencing News
FIRST MEDAL FOR SBHS THIS YEAR ! We arrived as the outsiders (ranked 15th), but leading for the entire match we quickly and convincingly defeated Barker-A (ranked 7th). The fencer of this match was clearly Jeffrey with his fantastic footwork. Our next opponent was Grammar-A (ranked 3rd). The bout was fairly evenly matched, even though we led most of the time, by time out Grammar had drawn even. The coin was flipped, and I managed to keep my nerve and deliver the finishing blow - 39:38. This was a very satisfying victory after our crushing defeat by them in the Schools Championships three weeks ago. In the semi finals we were up against Hills Grammar (ranked 2nd). Solid fencing on both sides, but they were clearly the better team, defeating us 30:45. After a short break we went into a playoff for 3rd place and convincingly defeated the Newington-A team (ranked 4th). The bronze medal was ours! Rankings in bracket indicate results in the Schools Championships in May). Congratulations - great teamwork won us this medal. Keep training at UTS.
U/17 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS The format then changed to direct elimination, fenced first to 15 instead of first to 5. Patrick was up against the 6th ranked fencer. Whilst Patrick fenced very well and managed to recover some lost ground, it was not enough and he was eliminated 6:15. Yu Lin was up against the 5th ranked fencer, who I had narrowly defeated in the preliminary round, giving us hope Yu might win too, but it was not to be. He fought hard but his opponent’s fencing style did not suit Yu at all, resulting in a defeat of 2:15. In my bout against the 3rd ranked fencer I led for eight and a half of the nine minutes, before losing it, allowing my opponent to score two quick hits, resulting in a draw at time out. The coin was flipped and he delivered the coup de grace. I was defeated 12:13. He went on to win the bronze medal and I remained in 14th position. We were all defeated in direct elimination, and thus our rankings from the preliminary round became our final rankings - Patrick 11th, Yu 12th and myself 14th.

1ST GRADE Setter Alex Le and blocker Ping D. had trouble finding the venue in the morning, resulting in the jumping of many fences. The game was a pleasant change to the previous GPS games, with decent passing and balls coming over after the first hit and this allowed High to put set plays into practice just in time before Metro Schools Cup this Sunday. Incredible hitting by Oliver C and Terry L left the opposition dumbfounded, including a well placed hit by Oliver smack-bang in the face! Quick middle balls were being smashed back at Grammar by centre-blockers Warren T. Also, Ping L saw Sam C and David D, plus the various Grammar boys go wild, resulting in Grammar screaming back High’s rugby scores on the weekend… The second set saw banter fly back and forth from each side of the net. Unphased, solid passing and hitting from Victor N and Jamie T led High to victory in the second and eventually third set. In summation, Sydney High is going to win the GPS.
2ND GRADE High began with a shaky start but after getting into the rhythm, fought back valiantly until the very end. The first set ended in an almost shameful way, mainly attributed to the missed warm-up and the lack of acclimatisation to the unanimously agreed larger court size. Not the ones to be pushed over, second grade fought back and with solid passes from Daniel C., Yo-Ha K. and Paul T. that fuelled spectacular hits to outside hitters Stephen D and Captain Jordan L. Impressive blocks by Henry D. and Daniel S. reinforced High’s exceptional game play.
Unfortunately it was a close loss 25-8 21-25 27-25 26-24 but High came out of it as a better
team, with now a much improved team dynamic. Next time, without the questionable court size, High
will definitely come out as the victor. School Event Photographs

The Boggabilla ExchangeDuring the State of Origin week our school again played host to the students from Boggabilla Central School, from the far north west on the Queensland border. Many thanks to all the billeting families who opened their homes to these students. When interviewed by the Telegraph the thing that most impressed the Bogga students was the generosity of their hosts. The families of those who billeted were Keiran and Alastair Taylor, Lachlan and Neil Street, Aaron Shuttleworth, Nick and Tom Lindeback, D’arcy and Eddy Blaxell, Gareth and Lachlan Deacon, Jimari Bastable and Ms Plenkovich. The Great Sydney Boys High Piano Competition The Great Sydney Boys High Piano Competition The Music Department will be holding its first Piano Competition for each year level starting in week 8 this term. We encourage all pianists to enter as this is a great performance opportunity and a wonderful learning experience. Solo performance pieces can range from any genre (Baroque to Contemporary) with time limits for each year group listed below. Competition to be held on the following dates at lunchtime

WEDNESDAY 14 JUNE* 2006 AT 7.30 PM Our speaker will be Louise Remond, Clinical Psychologist, Health Psychology Unit, University of Technology, St Leonards Campus, Royal North Shore Hospital co-author with Dr Sarah Edelman of Taking Charge: A guide for teenagers - Practical ways to overcome stress, hassles and upsetting emotions Louise will give an overview of issues teens have commonly identified as stressful and aspects of adolescent development which can make adolescence a stressful period. She will describe the Taking Charge Model which aims to help individuals take 'greater charge' of their behaviours and emotions by taking positive actions and identifying and challenging unhelpful patterns of thinking. Topics will include: problem solving; acceptance of situations beyond one's control; identifying particular patterns of unhelpful thinking; skills for challenging irrational beliefs and applications of particular strategies to managing stress, the 'blues' and anxiety. The talk will provide useful resources for helping teenagers when they are feeling distressed. The presentation will be followed by question time and refreshments.

NON VEGETARIAN BANQUET: Football: The Onion BagRound two of the GPS season was played out in difficult conditions. Low temperatures, strong winds and at times rain, tested the character and skill of all those who braved the conditions. I congratulate all the boys, coaches and parents who made the effort to get to venues with no guarantee that their game was going to be played. For future reference in the event of wet weather each school has a wet weather line, as does Centennial park. First grade suffered a 1-nil loss to a physical Joeys outfit. High’s failure to man mark saw Joeys continually have free men available in attack. Accurate passes to these players resulted in numerous shots on goal. If not for the presence of Lachlan Street in goal, the score would have been substantially more. Yet again High was unable to construct and complete any serious attacking raids, with the movements breaking down. On a more pleasing note, Long Chen’s performance was outstanding, displaying the urgency in both attack and defence that is expected from a first grade player. Second grade continued their unbeaten run, drawing 1 all. After failing to finish several early chances, High found themselves one behind. However, just like the week before they managed to fight their way back into the game with an equaliser from Alistair Taylor. There are no games due to the long weekend. Our next fixtures are against Kings of the 17th of June, as shown right. This will be our first full home round of the season, so lets support all High teams. A reminder to all boys to clean up their rubbish at the end training and the end of games. Empty water bottles and tape are commonly left behind reflecting poorly on us all. Even if there aren’t bins available take the rubbish with you.

It was an 8 am game, and it was dead cold for our team. The game kicked off in good shape, with Jeremy Rajendram scoring his first goal for High, thanks to a keeping error. The game continued, with the forwards missing a few simple shots, but was compensated with two goals to Enoch Hui. Kieran Taylor then scored coming in from the wing right after the break. Joeys still haven't had a shot yet thanks to some brilliant defending by our centre backs, Captain Antony Paul and Tony Xiao. The game finished off with a last minute goal by Enoch, to complete his hat-trick. The whistle blew, and we concluded by shaking our dirty hands with our opponents. Well played 14As!

Student Opportunity!! Kambala Girls School has invited us to take part in a film festival they are running in support of the Oaktree Foundation (), whose work aims to minimise poverty. Much like Tropfest, the films for submission are to be up to 7 mins long, be of M rating and have a signature theme of “FREE”. The films will screen at Kambala on Sunday August 13th. No experience is necessary, just an interest in filmmaking and the dedication to see the project through to completion. We need people to fill a variety of roles and we will provide you will some instruction, guidance and the resources to get the film (or animation) done!
