From the Principal
Investing in our Schools
It was with great relief that we heard the news of our
successful application for a Commonwealth sports infrastructure grant of $150,000 to relocate our
cricket nets and lay two new basket ball courts. The application was made on our behalf by The
探花视频 Foundation as our Government School Community Organisation and the
Foundation will receive the funds to pay the successful tenderers. The Foundation will handle
project management also. There may be a delay of 6 to 8 weeks before the money arrives, but at
least we can now plan for the facilities to be built this year – our centenary year in the
GPS. A site elevation plan and engineering drawings have been prepared. Laurie Heil is organising
new quotations for the proposed works so that we will be ready to go as soon as the money
arrives. We still need your help to complete these infrastructure objectives and tax deductible
donations can be made via the school website go to sports/ sports donations ASF
donation form /facilities development ().
Tennis Courts
The lights have been installed and tested. The fencing has been
completed. The surface preparation and painting is underway. Landscaping works, internal
competitor seating, the umpires chairs, and net installation are yet to be done. We hope to have
a functional hand over next week.
High Hosts Cross Country
Fine weather and a very large field made for a great start
to the cross country running season at the High Invitational Carnival on Saturday. There were
over 100 competitors in each age event but all the places and times were recorded efficiently.
High’s team was plagued by injury and illness but credit must go to Ali Amin for competing
while recovering from the flu. Others in the team had solid runs and I am sure once we get
organised and into hard training, times will improve. Thank you to Messrs Bigelow, Codey and
McDermott who assisted John Prorellis and Clay Kesting with the organisation of the event. Thank
you to our team of volunteers, especially the Reis family, the Farrow-Palmer family, Mr Stadnik
and Mr Bapat. It was an event that did us credit as a GPS school that can handle large event
management.
Sir Roden Cutler Memorial Gates
Work has commenced on stage two of the project and
students are asked to avoid the Gate 9 area as the base is prepared and the sandstone pillars
laid. Construction workers will be on site for a couple of weeks.
Toilet Refurbishment
As a result of a 4-year campaign by the SRC of the school, our
toilets under the Great Hall will be refurbished finally. The construction will take 6 weeks. A
compound will be established outside of the toilet area for the workmen’s offices/ lunch
room and toilets. Students are advised to stay away from the compound area during the
construction period. Temporary toilets are to be located outside the hall in the corner area on
the gymnasium side.
Coaching Impediment to Co-curricular Activities
I am concerned about the incidence
of students receiving coaching and the influence that coaching appears to have over our students.
Coaching in small group classes is of very limited advantage and the more effective personal
tutoring, if necessary at all, should be arranged so as not to conflict with programs scheduled
by the school and certainly should not be allowed to determine student availability for
co-curricular participation. I strongly urge parents to reconsider the coaching commitments made
on behalf of their children. Coaching is effective to remediate or enrich and is not useful as a
substitute for regular classroom instruction. Too often I have been told of instances where
students are inattentive, bored or worse, absent from class, because they have been exposed to
topics in advance of the teaching program by coaches working through textbooks. Please get
involved in school life and demonstrate a healthy life balance!
Weights Training for Sports
After witnessing our rugby teams in action last weekend,
I was again struck by how much more confident and competent boys are who have had the benefit of
a season of weights training. From Year 7 to Year 12, all students in competitive sport should be
signed up for Sydney’s cheapest gym membership at $3.50 per week (less than a big Mac). I
have recommended strongly to Mr Barris that no one should be selected in first level crews who
cannot demonstrate participation in a weights training program. In my view our first grade
football, rugby, tennis and volleyball teams should all be on programs to build strength and
fitness or make way for those who have the commitment to make the most of their abilities in
training preparation.
‘Take it Home Competition’ Winners
There were three lucky winners of our
inaugural ‘Take it Home competition’. Their parents correctly answered that the Sir
Roden Cutler Memorial Gates stage 2 completion date is the 29th of May. Question 2 was Sir
Roden’s attendance years at High, 1932-34. Finally, the cost of UNSW Library membership is
$30 per annum. Congratulations to Victor Wei (9T), Daniel Paperny (8F) and Phillip Roser (9M).
You can collect your $50 Myer Gift vouchers from Ms Lynne Williams in the Senior
Administrator’s office. I urge more boys and their parents to take the time to submit
entries for our next competition, scheduled for June.
Joan Baret Funeral
Sadly, last Thursday I attended the funeral of Mrs Joan Baret,
wife of the late Ken Baret, who was laid to rest five weeks after her husband. The Barets were
involved with SBHS and SGHS for over 60 years. Their contribution through the High Club, various
school governance organisations and the SGHS Canteen over the years was very significant. They
will be missed by all those who have supported the High schools.

Roden Cutler Day
On Monday, 29 May at 4.00 pm we will be holding a function to celebrate the life and legacy of
Roden Cutler and the completion of stage one of the Sir Roden Cutler VC Memorial Gates.
The function, to be held at the School, will be hosted by Dr Jaggar, Lady Cutler and the Sir
Roden Cutler Charities. The celebrations will commence at the completion of the Roden Cutler
Wheelchair Roll which is a 17 kilometre journey from the Lt Roden Cutler VC Statue at Manly
Village Public School to the Sir Roden Cutler VC Memorial Gates at Sydney Boys High School. The
statue at Manly is a gift from the Warringah ‘Australia Remembers’ Trust to the
people of Australia and will be unveiled by His Excellency, Major General Michael Jeffery AC CVO
MC, Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia at 10.00 am on Roden Cutler Day.
If you would like to attend the celebrations at Sydney Boys High School, please RSVP to the Main

Year 7 Parents
On Tuesday 6 June Brainstorm productions will be presenting the play “Sticks and
Stones”, a play about cooperating and solving problems peacefully.
This is an entertaining way to promote discussion amongst students and establishes the rule NO
BULLYING. The idea is to try and find a win-win solution for both people. Ideas generated by the
performance are discussed in Values Education [Transition] classes. The performance has become an
important aspect of the school’s anti-bullying policy and for this reason is compulsory.
Brainstorm Productions have won the NSW Performing Arts Frater Award – “Best feedback
from schools” category for the last five years.
We are aware that some boys have seen this production but it is important they participate with
their new peers.
Transition teachers will distribute permission forms and collect them. Your prompt payment to the
office, after receiving the permission note would be greatly appreciated.

Old Boy Awarded University Honour
The University of New South Wales’ Faculty of Engineering recently presented former Sydney
Boys High student Indeewa Chandrawansa with a prestigious Dean’s Award. The award
acknowledges outstanding academic achievement in the field of engineering.
Indeewa Chandrawansa is in his second year of a combined civil engineering and commerce degree.
“I feel honoured to receive such a prestigious award from the best engineering school in
the country. This award has also given me confidence and motivation to bravely face the
challenges that lie ahead,” says Indeewa.
The Dean of Engineering, Professor Brendon Parker, presented the students with their awards at a
presentation ceremony held at the University of New South Wales.
“We are delighted with the quality of young engineers we are producing at this university.
Their range of interests, from biomedical engineering to developing infrastructure such as roads,
hospitals, water and communication, shows the diversity of the profession and its value to

Reading Programs
The Year 7 & 8 Literacy Circles Reading Program is now
undergoing intensive preparation. (Ergo I have a lot of reading to do.) Parents who have

Nearly all the potential books have been purchased for this program. Thanks to the many parents
who donate annually to the Library Fund. Once again thanks to Lyn Tran for organising the Telstra
Grant of $1000 towards this program and thanks also to Telstra.
Once again the competition is on for the CBC Children’s Book Awards. One of our
English classes will be selected to read the nominations and predict the winner for the Books for
Older Readers. This class may then get the opportunity to listen to the school children responses
to the winning novels.
The nominations are: The Story of Tom Brennan – JC Burke, Double Exposure
– Brain Caswell, No Worries – Bill Condon, Chasing Charlie Duskin
– Cath Crowley, It’s not all about you Calma –Barry Jonsberg, Lost
Property – James Moloney.
Our library and the English Department will be interested in collecting statistics to see if
English wide reading units (Literacy) are making any difference to recreational reading.
Book Reviews
It was a total joy over the holidays to revisit the
“Arkady” novels of Martin Cruz Smith. I must be hungry for a good book because I
particularly enjoyed Polar Star. I also read a non-“Arkady” novel by Smith called
Rose. I am not sure how Russians react to an American like Martin Cruz Smith trying to portray
the Russian “soul” but his efforts appear genuine to westerners like myself. It is
totally hilarious to find that every Russian criminal is a likeable, intelligent, ironic
philosopher. Perhaps this applies to anyone if Martin Cruz Smith is inspired to create you as a
character. For such an understanding deposed detective, Arkady can certainly defend himself with
a brutal creativity. I guess this may be an advantage if you keep having to hide in Siberia from
your former employer – the KGB.
I have also just finished Lionel Schriver’s Orange Prize winner, We Need to Talk about
Kevin. It is rather challenging to write engagingly (or even honestly) about the mother of the
perpetrator of a school massacre. Though this is similar to the theme of Vernon God Little the
Booker Prize Winner of 2004 and DBC Pierre had created an interesting survivor with Vernon. I
think Schriver’s Eva was honest. I can’t imagine why she didn’t pick up her
hapless second child, Celia, and run the moment she was born. Celia’s accessibility and
vulnerability to Kevin’s psychopathic tendencies were very obvious to her. Eva kept trying
to convince us that she was anything but stupid. At the end Eva seems to feel that Kevin is
becoming normal. Being brutalised in gaol seems to have removed his braggadocio. Killing is no
longer clever. But providing him with a bedroom in your little flat when he was released after
only 5 years!! Please! Even if he does look like you! Is the feisty Eva really just a willing
Celia-like victim? I am not so sure that this novel belongs on a Literacy Circles Reading list. I
am not convinced it deserves the Orange Prize either.
Ex Student and “I feel like a Tooees or two” advertising man and brewing Chief Exec
Bill Widerberg dropped us in two copies of The Big End of Town. This novel purports to tell us
how this end of town thinks. The novel is crime fiction with a rather Matthew Reilly style hero.
Is murder and siphoning off shareholder profits to personal accounts in island tax havens the way
the big end of town thinks?? Another ex-student, Russell Crowe thinks we should approach the
“big end of town” for a donation towards our new library. Perhaps we could set up
Sydney Boys High as a new principality (tax haven). We look forward to copies of Bill’s
next novel due this June. Meanwhile this novel joins our library’s Old Boys
Collection.

Rugby Committee Meeting Summary
The second meeting of the SBHS Rugby Committee for 2006 season was held on 3 May 2006. The
following is a summary of the meeting:

Treasurer’s report
Parking transfers received for Matt Bowman’s coaching services. Floats for Saturday have
been made but will now be held over until 17/6/06 as BBQ and canteen will not run this Saturday.
1st and 2nd XV camp
Congratulations to Serdar Bolen and his crew for a very
successful camp. S Bolen said that a surplus had been made from the camp. This money would go to
the tape costs for the 1sts and 2nds.
OPRO mouth guards
Four boys have taken advantage of the offer. Dentist will come to the school tomorrow to take
impressions.
Chris Whitaker game
28 boys paid for tickets to represent Sydney High at Chris
Whitaker’s last Waratah home game of the regular competition.
More parent representatives
Year 12 and Year 7 parents are still required as
representatives on the Rugby Committee. All welcome.

From Visual Arts
Welcome to term 2 from the VISUAL ARTS department. This term we are excited to inform you about
an important upcoming exhibition coming to Sydney.
The Biennale of Sydney – Zones of Contact begins on the 8th of June and continues until the
27th of August. It is shown at 16 different sites around the city, mostly at the Museum of
Contemporary Art at Circular Quay and The Art Gallery of New South Wales. This year the theme
Zones of Contact, represents a dialogue between people and cultures. It is free. Sydney Boys High
students and Families are encouraged to see this contemporary exhibition as it is a rare chance
to see some of the world’s most avant guard artists showcased in our city.
Also if any HIGH families have not yet seen the ARCHIBALD, WYNNE AND SULMAN PRIZES at The Art
Gallery of New South Wales, why don’t you pop along after school sport one Saturday. The
show will close in a few weeks on the 28th of May. The Archibald is Australia’s richest
painting prize. The AGNSW also has the ZEN BUDDHIST show coming up on the 17th of June, involving
the art of ink painting and calligraphy. Many students have been introduced to calligraphy at
home and viewing this show may deepen your interest and understanding of this particular art.
The VISUAL ART department would like to wish you the all the best with your creative energy,
lateral thinking and imagination this month.

CONDUCT IN DEBATING COACHING
Debating is a privilege not a right at
High.
With over 130 debaters in 2006, I have no time, nor patience for those who wish
to be a disruption to coaching. ANY student who creates disruptions, by calling out, being
disrespectful to their coach or to others in the session etc will be asked to leave the session.
"Repeat offenders" may not be allowed to continue with debating.

The Eastside Competition Finals - CONGRATULATIONS!!
The Eastside Debating
Competition concluded last Friday with Sydney Boys High taking out the Years 10, 11 and 12
divisions, debating the topic "that we should allow mining in Antarctica".
Year 12 had been a three way tie, with Scots, Sydney Girls and High winning a debate each. The
winner was determined on points with Sydney Boys being declared the winner.
The team was Faraz Amin, Sriram Srikumar and Romesh Abeysuriya.
The Year 11 team of Michael Coutts, Kelvin Yu, Blaise Prentice- Davidson and Anthony
Morris beat Sydney Grammar.
Year 10 continued their unbeaten record against Grammar. Zid Mancenido, Lucian Tan, Dom
Bowes and Patrick Locke made up the year 10 team.
Years 7 and 9 were beaten by Sydney Grammar and Year 8 by Sydney Girls High.

To The 6 schools in the competition, the coaches and teachers, the
adjudicators and especially to the SBHS Debating Supporters Group.
In particular Mrs Angela Pal the DSG treasurer who has collected the subscriptions and
paid the adjudicators, Mrs Alice Paul for organising the supper helpers and Mrs Dimie
Katsikaros for her massive sandwich making efforts and catering skill.
Also to Barbara Taylor and David Rudder for their help at home debates.
A mighty thanks also goes to Antony Paul, Puneet Baweja, Angud Chawla, Christian
Katsikaros and Ashwin Rudder who were excellent help on the night with the million
little things that needed to be organised and set up in order for the event to run so
successfully.

The Onion Bag
HIGH V Redlands
We have experienced several teething problems during the last two
weeks of trial matches. Several parents have raised concerns about a lack of coaches and coaches
not attending fixtures. I agree that this is an unfortunate situation and I am endeavouring to
rectify the problems. High football survives on the goodwill of dedicated staff, parents and old
boys and I am open to offers from all those groups to help out. Training sessions are one day per
week (1.00-2.45 either Wed. or Thurs) and 7 Saturday mornings.
On the topic of helping out, High football has been allocated a parking day this Saturday, 13/5.
This is a valuable fund raising opportunity and the more helpers the better. Barbara Taylor, our

On a more pleasant topic, High teams had a pleasing return to form last weekend. 1st, 2nd and 3rd
grades all scored comprehensive victories with the most pleasing aspect being the style in which
their football was played. Extensive periods of possession, coupled with strings of passing
interchanges and decoy runners led to many scoring opportunities being made and accepted.
I also had the pleasure of being able to watch some of the future stars of High football in the
13s, 14s and 15s. All players displayed the passion and commitment that we are famous for at
High. I congratulate all the boys who participated in the games on the weekend.
This weekend’s fixtures are at a range of venues and of course times. Pleasing ensure that
you know where and when you are playing and organise your travelling arrangements.

- Students are to make there own way to the fields (see attached map).

Eastern Suburbs Zone Secondary Schools Annual Athletics Carnival – 2006
Dear Parent
The Eastern Suburbs Zone Athletics Carnival will be held at Hensley Athletics Field
(EASTGARDENS) on Friday 23rd June all day (8.00am – 3.15pm).
Your son has been selected to represent Sydney Boys High at this carnival. Senior athletes need
only attend for their events (they may go back to school to attend their normal classes).
The boys will need shorts (Light Blue or Black) and a High athletics singlet or a House PE shirt.
A canteen will operate at the venue on the day, athletes are encouraged to take their own food.
Theft at carnivals is a common occurrence so please ask you son not to take valuables to this
event.
Any athlete who finishes first or second in this event will be selected in the zone team to
compete at the Sydney East Area Carnival in August.
Please complete the permission slip and return to Mr Devlin by Monday, 22nd May.

Our speaker will be Louise Remond, Clinical Psychologist, Health Psychology Unit,
University of Technology, St Leonards Campus, Royal North Shore Hospital co-author with Dr Sarah
Edelman of Taking Charge: A guide for teenagers - Practical ways to overcome stress, hassles
and upsetting emotions
Louise will give an overview of issues teens have commonly identified as stressful and aspects of
adolescent development which can make adolescence a stressful period. She will describe the
Taking Charge Model which aims to help individuals take 'greater charge' of their behaviours and
emotions by taking positive actions and identifying and challenging unhelpful patterns of
thinking. Topics will include: problem solving; acceptance of situations beyond one's control;
identifying particular patterns of unhelpful thinking; skills for challenging irrational beliefs
and applications of particular strategies to managing stress, the 'blues' and anxiety. The talk
will provide useful resources for helping teenagers when they are feeling distressed.
The presentation will be followed by question time and refreshments.
