The Athletics and Cross Country Carnivals In the cross country event, the competitors faced a tough course at Mount Steele and changeable weather but the participation was tremendous. Take it Home Competition Harmony DayPlease find following the contents of a letter received by SBHS from Alison Wood, the Acting College Director of Randwick TAFE regarding our participation in the Harmony Day Seminar and Workshop: "I am writing to thank you for the participation of Sydney Boys High School in the Harmony Day 2006 Seminar and Workshop held at Randwick College on 22 March 2006. "I felt that the morning was a great success, providing a forum for honest and positive discussion about multiculturalism. It was encouraging and refreshing to see such a focus on the positive aspects of living in a multicultural society when there has recently been so much negative attention. I have enclosed a summary of the workshop discussions/recommendations for your information. "Please pass on my special thanks to Rouna Daley and your student representatives, Lachlan Street and Thomas Lindeback, for their attendance and contributions. We were impressed by the maturity and articulateness of the students.
"It was noted by many attendees that educational institutions have a responsibility for ensuring
that the next generations of Australians live in a harmonious and united society that is proud of
its cultural diversity. Thanks to your participation in this event, I feel that we are making a
positive move towards achieving this." New Library Status UpdatePlease find following the contents of a letter received by SBHS from Carmel Tebbutt, MP, Minister for Education and Training regarding our Library facilities: "Following my visit to Sydney Boys High School, I raised the issue of the library facilities with the Department of Education and Training’s Asset Management Directorate. "I understand that further discussions about the library areas have taken place between yourself, the School Education Director and the Asset Management Unit, Sydney Region (AMU). "I am advised that the audit of areas within the school has been completed and that action to make the best use of the current facilities has been initiated. I am also advised that during Term 2, 2006, the Department will seek architectural advice on this matter from the Department of Commerce. "In terms of capital works funding, the Department has established a regional prioritisation process for examining project proposals, which are also considered against competing demands across the State. The AMU will be pleased to provide further information on this process, should you require it.
"I would be pleased if you would inform staff and the school community of the actions taken by
the Department to date on this issue." From the School CaptainOn Friday 7 April, Kevin Kim and I had the pleasure of going to Parliament and Government House as part of the DET secondary school student leadership program. We joined about 130 School Captains and Vice Captains to learn about state government and leadership. Members for Albury, Heffron, Sutherland and Canterbury spoke to us about their role in the lower house, political parties and local area. They shared the insistence that we should all write to our local MPs to tell them what to do (advice I have since followed). We had a tour of the lower and upper houses (the seats of the upper house were much more comfortable) and had our horizons broadened with a speech from an Afghan-Australian woman who has set up four orphanages for deposed children and has also organised brother and sister school programs with Sydney schools. Socialising with other school leaders on the way, we walked down to Government House. After a tour of the extravagant rooms and grounds (amazing views) Governor Marie Bashir spoke to us about her job as Governor and the high expectations she has for my generation. Kevin and I really enjoyed the day; it reinforced my faith in Australian democracy and talking to the MPs was heartening – they were intelligent, genuine and community-minded. On a side note I was glad to see that the 130+ school leaders from around Sydney accurately showed the multicultural nature of our city. Thanks to Mr. Kesting for the day.
In the second last week of school a blood donation bus came to the school making six trips
carrying boys to give blood at the Clarence Street centre. I heartily thank all those boys who
took part. As you can see from their advertising, the Red Cross has a great need for blood this
winter and your donation made a real difference. If you missed this time (or last) due to my
lacklustre organisation, there will be another opportunity this term for you to help save
‘up to three lives’! I’ll be in touch. Roden Cutler DayOn Monday, 29 May at 4.00 pm we will be holding a function to celebrate the life and legacy of Roden Cutler and the completion of stage one of the Sir Roden Cutler VC Memorial Gates. The function, to be held at the School, will be hosted by Dr Jaggar, Lady Cutler and the Sir Roden Cutler Charities. The celebrations will commence at the completion of the Roden Cutler Wheelchair Roll which is a 17 kilometre journey from the Lt Roden Cutler VC Statue at Manly Village Public School to the Sir Roden Cutler VC Memorial Gates at Sydney Boys High School. The statue at Manly is a gift from the Warringah ‘Australia Remembers’ Trust to the people of Australia and will be unveiled by His Excellency, Major General Michael Jeffery AC CVO MC, Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia at 10.00 am on Roden Cutler Day. or visit . The Onion Bag 2006I’m sure by now most of you would know that football MIC, Nic Morris, has accepted a transfer to Bowral High, starting second term. On behalf of the High football family I would like to thank Nic for his dedication to High football during the past 5 years. In his time as MIC he has overseen the development of the sport, to become the school’s highest participation sport, fielding 26 teams on Saturdays. He was instrumental in raising the code’s profile in the school and securing fixtures on the school’s premier venue, McKay 1. Nic has put in place a football development program at High, which consists of professional coaches assisting staff and old boys. On behalf of all players, coaches and staff, Thanks, Nic! Our first trial for the year was our traditional clash with the strong football school, Trinity Grammar. First grade came up against a highly skilled and organised outfit, including at least one junior Australian rep. The final 2-6 score line does not reflect the effort the boys put in, with four of the goals scored in the last five minutes of each half. What we must take from the game is that quality opposition will always punish lapses of concentration. 2006 has seen the return of one of High football’s favourite sons, Nick Apofis, to the coaching ranks. Nick has supported Sydney High football as a player, coach and technical director. Both the First and Second grade players can look forward to learning plenty about how the game should be played from Nick. His experience and knowledge will be invaluable. Second grade, coached by Nick, registered a respectable 1-1 draw. The game was the first opportunity for several Year 10 boys to display their ability against open grade players. All of them performed admirably, with the only sour note being a broken arm to Pat Locke. Results from the other age groups suggest that we need to work hard to improve our game. Only one team registered a victory and several were on the wrong side of some very lopsided score lines.
Hopefully we can turn things around this weekend.
Quote of the Week School Athletics Carnival 2006Over two glorious days late last term the School Athletics Carnival was held at nearby ES Marks field. The Carnival is intended to provide for all standards of athletes and boys are strongly encouraged to participate in at least three events on the day for the Student Award Scheme. The participation levels at this year’s carnival increased from the previous two years thanks in large part to the new event forms supplied by Mr Dowdell and the student award scheme. The Carnival went very smoothly thanks to the efforts of staff, student volunteers and willing competitors. Particular thanks to the computer team of James Rudd, Toby Rosengarten, George Qin, Alexandro Lai, Ziggy Harrison-Tikisci, Anthony Ho, Nic Lochner, Varan Perababthan and Alex Shapilsky for donating their skills and expertise over the two days. Our Carnival is now one of the few large school Carnivals held at ES Marks and it continues to be a thrilling and exciting event. Congratulations also to the Age Champions – Michael Phung (12 Years), Derk Trang (13 Years), Joshua Tassell (14 Years) Lachlan Street (15 Years), Ty Linegar (16 Years) and Dakshika Gunaratne (Open).

Over the coming term the athletics coaching staff will be targeting training of athletes in long
jump, shot put, hurdles, relays and longer distance runners. These training sessions will be held
at lunchtimes on the flat and after school on the Bat and Ball Fields. Over the next couple of
weeks all aspiring GPS Athletes need to collect their athletics’ training program from the
History Staffroom. The training at this stage should be about skill acquisition and should not
interfere with winter sport activities. Anyone interested in joining the athletics team this

The regatta is a sailing event open to all students of any Australian Secondary School. Nearly 200 boats compete every year. It is held on Lake Macquarie after Easter and runs for 5 days. Boats are divided into classes where there are sufficient boats of a particular type. This year Sydney Boys High excelled! In the Pacer Class, Brian Lung and Tadeusz Davenport took out first place, with Jed Coppa and Calum Martin second and David Toh, Julius Macefield and Nikita Slinko (Nikita and Julius sailed on alternate days) in third. In the Laser 4.7 Class, Phil Kurts took first place. While the wind was a bit fickle on most days we had good weather throughout the regatta. One of the highlights was meeting students from other schools. The sailors were excited, competitive and friendly.
A very special thank you must be extended to the Kurts Family for organising, feeding and looking
after the team. Food for Thought

150th Anniversary Celebrations (Sesquicentenary) The Paddington Model School opened for enrolments on Monday 5 May 1856, by order of The Board of National Education, with Mr Thomas Harris as its first Headmaster. On Friday 5 May 2006, the school will commemorate 150 years of continuous public education on the same site, with Mrs Sue Mootz as its current Principal.
