The Strongman Competition From the English FacultyTerm 1 is rapidly drawing to a close. Year 11 students are in the process of undertaking their Oral Assessment tasks as part of their Preliminary Advanced Course together with the completion of their first Preliminary Extension task at the end of week 10. Assessment of Term 1 modules is also occurring in Years 7-10. All students have received details about these tasks from their class teachers. As part of our English enrichment program all Year 7 participated in a very successful excursion to the NSW Art Gallery and the State Library. As an extension to their Term 1 work on ‘Biography and Autobiography’ students were asked to critically and creatively respond to the ‘Self Portrait’ exhibition at the Art Gallery and the Doug Moran Portraiture Prize exhibition at the State Library. During the course of the day students completed a variety of stimulating and challenging tasks which we hope have added to their understanding and enjoyment of biographical writing. It was clear from the reaction of members of the public at both these venues that the boys were a credit to our school. A very special thanks must be extended to Ms Boukatos who organised the excursion. Year 10 students have completed a module of work on Satire. We would particularly like to congratulate the following boys – Sean Lee, Simon Liu, Simin Yang, Richard Hua and Jun Dai – who produced a short satirical film which demonstrated both an exceptional understanding of all aspects of film production and a maturity beyond their years. Congratulations also to Phillip Wu for his work in coordinating class films. Year 12 will undertake Assessment Tasks for both the Advanced and Extension Courses at the beginning of Term 2. We urge students to use the Easter break to consolidate their understanding of content already covered and to revise this content through writing. Any student who needs assistance in organising their revision program for their English Assessment tasks should see Ms Trompetter. On Monday 8th May Marrickville Library is presenting an HSC lecture on ‘Physical, Inner and Imaginative Journeys’ – Year 12 students are encouraged to attend. See Ms Trompetter for further details.
The 2006 ‘Writenow’ writing competition is currently open to students in Years 7-9.

Sir Roden attended the High School from 1932-34. He was captain of the rifle shooting team and was awarded a Blue. He also later became a patron of the Old Boys Union. He was the only Australian artilleryman to be awarded the Victoria Cross for outstanding and sustained gallantry over 18 days fighting in Syria. After the loss of his leg, he was forced to retire from the AIF returning home in 1941. In 1942 Sir Roden was elected the State Secretary of what is today known as the RSL. A year later he was appointed Assistant Deputy Director of the Security Service in NSW and later appointed to the position of Assistant Commissioner for the Commonwealth in the Department of Repatriation, a position he held until 1946 when he was appointed Australian High Commissioner in New Zealand. His posts as an Australian diplomat over a twenty year period included: High Commissioner in Ceylon, Her Majesty’s Australian Minister to Egypt, Secretary-Chief of Protocol of the Department of External Affairs, High Commissioner in Pakistan, Consul General in New York, Delegate to the UN General Assembly, Her Majesty’s Australian Ambassador to the Netherlands and as Governor of New South Wales. It is plain to see why the School Family wishes to commemorate the life of Sir Roden. The date for completion of this stage is 29 May, 2006. Last week your son was given a brochure depicting plans of the project and a donation form, for your convenience, to contribute financially to the project by completing credit card details or writing a cheque made payable to Sydney Boys High School. l. This incorporated the ‘Take It Home’ Competition where boys were asked to have a parent answer three simple questions and sign the attached form to confirm they had read the brochure and High Notes. All correct entries placed in the box at the Main Office by Friday, 5 May will go into a draw for three $50 Coles/Myer gift cards on offer.ALL donations are greatly appreciated. By participating and giving our best gifts to this appeal we will all benefit. The clear landmark of pillars and gates will raise our physical profile within the community and above all remind us to strive to give of our best, as did Sir Roden.

150th Anniversary Celebrations (Sesquicentenary) The Paddington Model School opened for enrolments on Monday 5 May 1856, by order of The Board of National Education, with Mr Thomas Harris as its first Headmaster. On Friday 5 May 2006, the school will commemorate 150 years of continuous public education on the same site, with Mrs Sue Mootz as its current Principal.
