Invoices for School General Service Contributions
All parents should have received
their invoices for the year’s voluntary contributions. Over the last three years nearly 90%
of families have paid the ‘school fees’. This terrific response has enabled the
school to move ahead with many improvements and additional services directly benefiting students.
We rely very heavily on this income from parents. Once again I ask for your cooperation and
support to make 2005 the most successful yet in terms of resources available for your boys.
Please pay promptly so that we can implement our plans fully in term 2 instead of later in the
year.
Tennis Court Development
Update I am expecting ground-breaking draft licence
agreements to arrive this week from DET authorising the ̽»¨ÊÓƵ Foundation to do two
things: develop the tennis courts to the approved plans and manage the courts for 5 years with a
5 year option. I hope that this first agreement will be the model for a series of such agreements
with the Foundation in respect of its management of the High Store and SBHS agreements with it to
use the Fairland Pavilion and the Outterside centre for storage of equipment and sports
activities.
Retaining Wall update
We are to the stage of picking a successful tenderer to
construct the retaining wall at the end of McDonald Wing to stabilise the bank so that the
cricket net slab can then be laid. We hope to get the successful contractor to do the job in the
school holidays.
Staff Changes
Regretfully, I announce the departure of our School Senior Assistant,
Gayl McLachlan, who has taken up a Development Office appointment at Cranbrook School. On behalf
of the staff and students at High, I would like to wish her all the best in her new role. We will
remember her for her strong work ethic, sunny disposition, caring and compassionate nature and
meticulous financial administration. She moulded together a happy and efficient team of School
Assistants. Her leadership skills will be missed. She has acted wonderfully as my
‘Bursar’ for 4 years - at times a highly stressful, overloaded and certainly
underpaid role. Sharon Smith has agreed to take on the position of Acting Senior School
Assistant. I welcome Sharon to the role. She has demonstrated skills in ICT and financial
administration. I trust all members of the school community will support her as she learns the
intricacies of our financial administration.
We welcome also Lynne Williams who will take over from Cathy Meaney in the McDonald Wing Office,
doing Sue McGuiness’ job. Lynne has a background in ICT and HR and has all the skills
required for the role. Cathy will move to the Main Office to do Sharon’s job in finance.
Diana Acuna also left us last week. She and her family are taking a two year contract to live and
work in Venezuela. Diana was very skilled in ICT and was familiar with a wide range of software.
She was a trained librarian. Her combination of skills will be missed. We welcome Julia
O’Hare to take Diana’s place. She will be working Wednesdays and Thursdays in the
Library and three days in the Main Office. Julia has experience in library and office work so she
should fit comfortably with Diana’s duties.
HSC Results Analysis
On Monday evening in the Great Hall, I will present an analysis
of the HSC results for 2004 and a review of trends in performance since the new HSC began in
2001. I invite all interested parents to attend the meeting. Data to be presented and reviewed
will be available on the school website at at the About - HSC Results page.
High Talent
Cameron Conway was chosen in the combined GPS second grade team - a just
reward for his strong season in a lowly ranked team. Congratulations to Andrew Reis, Kenny La,
Jeffrey Jiang, Ellis Louie, Cameron Halls, Ben Chow, Philip Tripp - our CHS swimming
representatives. Good luck to all our competitors in the CHS rowing championships this weekend.
Computers in schools upgrade
By the end of this term SBHS should have its
entitlement of 38 computer units (taken as servers, PCs or laptops) delivered and installed. We
are entitled to another 17 units that will become available some time in second term.
Data points installed in science labs
As part of our ICT strategy for 2005, every science lab has a data point connection to allow
teachers to deliver multimedia science lessons. We expect that every science teacher will be able
to deliver more flexible lessons in Term 2 as a result of this initiative. More data projectors
and laptops will be required to make the delivery of AV and WAN resourced lessons more
widespread. I am looking forward to a leap forward in science curriculum delivery over the next
couple of years with technology integrated into a majority of lessons.

Fundraising
SOMETHING FOR MOTHER
Mothers Day falls on Sunday, 8th May.
Lindt LINDOR CHOCOLATES (six chocolates in every box) will be available for boys to purchase as a
gift for Mother, Mum, Mummy, Nanna and Grandma.
$4.00 buys one box
$12.00 for three boxes (tied with ribbon)
This project has the support of the Principal, Dr. Jaggar, the P&C and the School
Representative Council. Funds raised will be directed towards the New Library Fund and current
school projects.
To make this project a major success you can be active in two ways:
1 - Order a carry pack of 18 boxes of chocolates and sell to your work mates, neighbours and
relatives
2 - Have your son purchase a box from one of the SRC sellers at school over the week of
2nd - 6th May.
The school needs to place its order before the end of Term One for the estimated number of carry
packs to be sold.
Please indicate below and return to office by Wednesday 6th April the amount of carry packs (each
containing 18 individual boxes of chocolates to be sold for $4.00 per box) you wish to sell to
your contacts after 2nd May
