The sharp end of the HSC pecking order
We have some work to do to regain our spot in
the table of all rounders with 10 units at 90. Twenty-five to thirty boys should be able to
achieve at the level required. The percentage of band 6s awarded has risen 40% since 2001. The
percentage of bands 5 & 6 awarded has climbed by 36%. Nearly 13,000 HSC students are earning
on average 2.17 band 6s each. The four year average is 2.26. Our aim should be that every student
gets 2.5 band 6s as a minimum!

We want to be the best boys school in the state. We have the potential. We need to put in the
effort to get there. North Sydney Boys has overtaken us in the last two years. We need to correct
that situation in 2005! Mastery of the new HSC requires more time! Students need to be better
organised and more aware of how questions of various kinds need to be answered. They need to stop
resisting the new syllabus way of doing things and follow the answer guides discussed by their
teachers. They have to commit study time and follow specific exam model answers to the letter.

Summer sport ends dramatically
A very large crowd was on hand to witness the bottom of the table clash between High and Grammar
at the gym on Saturday. These fixtures in basketball usually are emotionally charged but this
event was more tense than most. Grammar fought back well in the seconds game to win narrowly in a
game that our team must have fancied themselves to win. Poor shooting in the final quarter cost
the boys a victory. The first grade game was a tough mental contest with switches in defensive
patterns and attempts by High to shut down the Grammar No. 13. The game was stopped twice for
several minutes while arguments about the correct score were settled. It was an incredibly long
game in the end. Our boys seemed be put off by all the fuss and made turnover errors and loose
shots to give Grammar too much possession.
In the tennis, our boys won the three doubles and all but one of the singles to finish the season
on just a point less than last year. Riverview's dominance was evident in the 10 point margin on
the table. I was very pleased to see the way our boys stayed focussed even though nothing was
riding on the day's play except pride in keeping a fine record going.
At the first grade cricket things appeared to be going according to plan on McKay Oval. Riverview
were held to a 10 run lead being bowled out for 145. At tea I thought we could survive the day.
After tea a combination of accurate bowling and poor shot selection by our batsmen had us all out
with 12 overs left to bowl and 80 runs for Riverview to score. The batsmen ran on everything. The
fielders tried for run outs. The ball was hit in the air. Panic set in on both sides. Seven
wickets fell. A run a ball was always the target after the Riverview openers got off to a flyer.
On the last ball of the last over a jubilant Riverview side made the run, won outright and won
the GPS premiership. Cricket is indeed an unpredictable game!
High Talent
Congratulations to Quan Nguyen who was selected for Sydney East to play AFL: football in the
Sydney AFL championships for juniors.
UNSW Co-op Scholarship Induction
Last Friday I was pleased to witness the induction of our UNSW Co-op Scholars, Calvin Liu, Kon
Moltchanski and Kagan Sevinc. This is a very prestigious program, providing free tuition and
industry placement during vacations. There were 113 scholarships this year, Australia wide. The
success rate in the scholarships follows HSC results trends. North Sydney Girls High had 6,
Sydney Girls and Moriah 5 each, and James Ruse 4. Sydney Boys and Manly had 3 each while many
selectives scored two scholarships. We ought to be getting 4 boys at least into this program.
Interested students in Year 12 are strongly advised to talk to Mr Watson about the following
areas of study where scholarships are awarded: accounting, actuarial studies, marketing, finance,
information systems and management, business information technology, chemical engineering,
computer science, electrical engineering / telecommunications, industrial chemistry, mechanical
engineering, mining engineering, materials science/ceramic engineering/process metallurgy,
petroleum engineering, photovoltaics & solar energy, surveying and spatial information
systems. More boys should make themselves fully aware of the scholarship possibilities in this
wide selection of vocational degrees.
Social Justice Program
We welcome Mr Hugh James (school captain 2003) who is working for us to establish a social
justice program to broaden leadership and service opportunities for senior school students. He is
promoting another antipodeans expedition. He has plans for a community service project in our
local area. I am confident students and staff will support his initiatives.

This week I have been testing Year 7 using our own "Language Power Test" which thoroughly
assesses grammar and writing. The writing section has the added advantage that we learn something
about the students beyond the condition of their subject-verb agreements and the state of their
tenses. You will find some suitably anonymous past examples on the Communities Web Site at
On the Blog recently you will find (see ) :
- Help for Year 9 with their work on anime.
- Ideas on Wikipedia, for and against, and another good information source.
- Leads for those who are having trouble controlling their English tense use. On this, see also

tenses are all over the place. How can I fix this?"

From the Library
Big thanks to Steve Codey who came in to the Library with 6 very popular books under his arm to
donate to our readers. Three are by Sara Douglas - The Crippled Angel, The Nameless
Day and The Wounded Hawk. He also donated some lovely Robin Hobbs - Assassin's
Quest, Royal Assassin and Assassin's Apprentice.
DONATIONS GRATEFULLY RECEIVED! The Library is delighted to be the recipient of new novels
purchased and already devoured. There is only so much room in your house and so many of you are
well educated readers, your leftovers can be really useful to our students.
NEW FICTION Thanks to the assistance of our lovely and competent office boys the newly purchased
fiction covers are making a bright and, we hope, informative display on the big window leading up
to the library. We are thinking of making similar displays of subject related purchases on
windows near subject staffrooms. It draws attention to the wonderful resources the Library is
currently purchasing courtesy of the Library Fund - A big thanks to all those generous parents
donating to this very worthwhile cause!
WEBSITE A full list of our 2005 purchases will be able to be found on our newly constructed
Website.

PARENT READERS FROM AMONG THE YEAR 8s This is the last call for parents who would be willing to
pre read a novel I have paid for so that the Year 8 Literacy Circles project can kick off with a
little more oomph. So far I have not had a single volunteer parent reader! If you feel you can
give this little bit of assistance to boys reading please email Mrs Crothers at

From the School Counsellors
Assertiveness (adapted from Parenting Ideas 2, Michael Grose) Some young
people find it difficult to be assertive. Assertiveness is a skill that young people can learn.
An assertive response helps them to stick up for their rights and avoid being teased or bullied.
Bullying is not tolerated in NSW government schools, whether it is physical, verbal, social or
psychological. Assertiveness involves the use of a firm voice and strong body language, including
eye contact. Assertive actions indicate control and imply an expectation of compliance. It is
different from Aggression, which shows lack of control and involves a raised voice, the use of
insults and body language which intends provocation to inflame a situation. Listed below are some
suggestions and strategies that may assist your child to develop assertiveness.
If a students needs to stand up for his rights, is being bullied or teased he should:
- Be polite and use the person's name; make good eye contact and use a strong stance; and ask
the person to stop what he is doing. State the request or statement using a firm voice.
- Give the person an opportunity to respond if appropriate. Be polite but firm and avoid
personal insults or using a whining voice.
- If the provocation continues he should walk away, ignoring the aggressor. If the teasing or
bullying continues he should seek teacher, year adviser or deputy to help them settle the
problem.
It can be helpful for a student to practise assertiveness in low risk situations - in front of
the family or even in front of the mirror.
If you would like to speak with a School Counsellor regarding concerns for your child, please
phone the school and make an appointment.

REMINDER TO PARENTS CHANGE OF ADDRESS
If you have recently changed your address or have changed your employment the school needs to
know. There have been a number of occasions when Administration have had difficulty contacting
parents because of change of workplace. This is extremely important in a case of emergency. If
parents are going to be out of the country for any length of time the Principal needs to know
this information as well.
Please ask your son to obtain a change of details form from the Main Office and also change forms
for travel when changing your address Your son's travel passes will be affected if he does not
have the correct address. Failure to complete these forms may result in your son not having a
travel pass.

Basketball
FIRST GRADE
Round 14 Saturday 12 March 2005
Score: 77 - 60
Top Points: C. Conway 33 Second Points: D. Palana 8
High entered this week's game with incredible confidence and vigour. In our previous match
against Grammar we came away with a convincing victory. With Cameron Conway scoring 40 and Dustin
Palana scoring 20 we were looking for the same performance from our two scoring weapons. We had a
good week at training, playing some of our best basketball on Friday.
We came out firing in the first quarter with Captain Cameron putting up about 15 points in the
first quarter alone and with some strong defence from the whole team we went into quarter time
down by only a few points. We continued this strong defence the whole way through the next 2
quarters with this low scoring affair never getting more than 10 points between the two teams.
Pat McDonnell came off the bench with an inspired effort in attack, walking through the key with
ease. Francis Wong and Dustin Palana had strong defensive games to say the least - stopping the
Grammar point guard in the back court and hustling all over the court.
In the last quarter Grammar began to pull away but not without a last push from a determined High
team bringing it back to a close margin with 5 minutes left but it wasn't to be. Cameron ended up
with 33 points. It wasn't quite enough with 1sts going down in the end. It was a disappointing
end to a good season, the crowds were great all season and we hope that basketball enthusiasm
will continue in further years.

All year the Spirit and Determination showed by our boys and coaching staff has led to improved
results this season. Congratulations to all teams! The 3rds, 16Bs, 15Bs and 7th had winning
seasons.
14s
Finally the 14s register a win! Matt Lau opened the scoring for either team with a great 3
pointer! From there it just seemed to get better with Grammar struggling with our height and in
particular Matt. He pulled off some great blocks to keep us ahead at half time 17-11. The second
half started slowly but we did well for the rest of the game, winning 37-27, Daniel top scoring
with 12 points. Well done boys, a great season!
Joshua Tassell (14s Age Captain)
15s
Last Saturday the 15 As and Bs played their last games for the season and at least for the Bs, it
couldn't have gone better. Throughout their match they pummelled Grammar's defence and blocked
nearly every one of their shots. Everything went according to plan. Alistair Taylor stood out as
playing exceptionally well, making hundreds of successful drives and taking some brilliant shots.
He was easily top scorer and without question 'man of the match'. By the end of the game the Bs
had won by about thirteen points which shows just how much they've improved over the season.
Unfortunately the As game had a somewhat different outcome… Before it started we overheard
that Grammar intended to break the 100 point barrier. Suddenly our 'joking' goal of losing by
less than fifty points didn't seem so unreasonable. In the first half Grammar played a full court
press and scored forty four points. We obviously needed to lift our game in the second half, and
so we did. Fourteen minutes into the second half Grammar had only scored four points! The only
bad thing was that we had only scored one. As the game continued we made some great plays, used a
lot of teamwork and continued to defend well. We all wanted to shoot a few threes before the game
ended but we never got the chance. At full time we had unfortunately failed to achieve our goal
of losing by less than fifty points but nonetheless had a lot of fun. Despite the score it was a
good way to end the season. I hope everyone comes back next season. This is the greatest
sport!!

Cricket
The agony and the ecstasy in cricket and the so close and so far results. A huge improvement in
our Senior teams with congratulations to both the First and Second XIs for great performances
notching 3 wins each. Our Third XI followed suit with 3 wins from only 6 rounds finishing 4th and
our Fourth XI which was self managed, cruised their way to 6 wins. Whilst our intermediate teams
did not record many victories the results were encouraging with several losses by a few runs, the
difference between glory and disappointment for the players. The junior teams have shown great
enthusiasm and our now famous "all out for 6 runs, Under 13 team" now putting 100 plus on the
board as are the Under 14 age group. An edition to take a few results for publication, with full
reports submitted on the cricket website
First XI - (Day 2) HIGH 10 /135 and 10 /89 LOST TO RIVERVIEW 10 /145 and 7 /81
A big effort was required on Day 2 and expectations were high as High chased the remaining
Riverview wickets for first innings. Poised to achieve their goal, which then escaped as a lapse
of control in the bowling attack with several expensive overs saw Riverview get up for the vital
lead. Batting a second time High couldn't put it together to establish a defendable and possible
winning total and were all out for 89. Riverview then took up the chase and won in the last
minutes of round 7 with 3 wickets in hand at 7 /81. A disappointing finish for the boys in a
season where the team showed their strengths and potential finishing with 3 wins from 7 rounds
and 6th on the premiership table. Congratulations to all players and coaching staff. Best
performances Peshala Kariawasam 36 Damitha Fonseka 25 and Mark Carroll 23 s the main scorers in
our first innings (apologies to Mark, for giving his brother credit for his innings in last
week's report). Damitha took 2 /30 and Rajeevan Yoganathan 3 /20 in Riverviews 1st innings. In
the 2nd innings Anuradha Vitanage 21 and Edward Pham 18 were the main scores and Damitaha Fonseka
4 /36 and Adrian Jeyendra 1 /21 took 5 wickets between them in High's attempt to turn the result
around.
Second XI - (Day 2) HIGH 10 /185 - DEFEATED - RIVERVIEW 10 /182
High began the day with the prospect that a win against Iggies and a few results going their way
would see them finish 4th on the Premiership ladder. With that in mind, the team started well,
taking 2 early wickets to have Riverview 2 /25 chasing a reasonably challenging total by High. A
56 run partnership at this point had High panicking and it took Manusha Samaraweera to break the
dead-lock. Interestingly it was the first ball Manusha bowled this season that took a wicket.
Then Suren struck with a beauty that cleaned up the stumps and High were back on top. Iggies 4 /
84 and looking unsteady.
Another 50 plus partnership again saw Riverview in a commanding position and they only required
49 runs to win with 8 wickets in hand. Then in great spells of bowling from both Suren
Wickramasinghe and Mark Samarasinghe Riverview lost 4 wickets for 10 runs and there was a real
buzz around the ground. The tail- enders took the score to 181 before the next wicket fell and
they required 5 more for victory with the No 11 to bat. Then a freakish moment…..The No 11
received a ball just short of a length from Shaheen Kumar and, rocking on to the back foot,
smashed it towards Edward Hibbert. What followed may have been merely reflex but we will claim it
as proof that fielding training works - Edward stuck out his hand and popped the ball up in the
air, catching it at the second attempt. The scene was incredible, the noise deafening. They had
done it again. But unlike their 4 run win against Newington earlier in this year, where the
momentum well and truly shifted in our favour, this match see-sawed and was there for the taking
for both teams at various stages. With the results going as we had hoped for the 2nd XI finished
the season in 4th place, a true indication of the dedication and desire the team exhibited this
season
(Report submitted by 2nd XI Coach - Kieran Lewis)
Fourth X1 - HIGH 7 /140 - DEFEATED- GRAMMAR 10 /80
High won the toss and elected to bat and got off to a slow start, 2 /45 at drinks. But some hard
hitting and quick running saw High score 95 runs in the last 14 overs to end up with an excellent
score of 7/140 from 28 overs with Yaseen Hussain (28) and Faraz Amin (34) doing most of the
batting damage. Early wickets by High kept Grammar on the back foot and never really posed a
threat with Sriram and James Morgan keeping them pegged back with tight bowling and frequent
wickets. Grammar eventually capitulated to be all out for 80 runs.
16 A - ( Day 2) HIGH 10 /116 -DEFEATED- RIVERVIEW 10 /99
After stumbling their way to 116 runs which seemed a dismal but defendable total, High managed to
have St Ignatius 2 /22 at stumps on Day 1. After some determined bowling from High , the Iggie's
boys were 6 /66 at the first drinks break. High decided to use only 5 "quicks" which paid off as
they fought hard, bowled tightly and were able to earn their first win for the season, after a
couple of heartbreaking losses. Riverview was finally bowled out for 99 with Dakshika Gunaratne
picking up 4 /17 (14 overs) and Rommo Pandit taking 3 /28 (10 overs). With grade selections for
Firsts and Seconds coming up next season, this was an important win for all concerned and
hopefully a confidence booster.
( Report submitted by Rommo Pandit)
14 B - HIGH 10 /118 LOST TO GRAMMAR 10 /206
High won the toss and elected to bowl. They put on a wonderful display with the ball but we were
certainly not up to scratch in the field. Despite being hammered for 209, the High boys did not
give up. Best bowlers were Maxim Mikha (0 /17) , Victor Ung (1 /14) and Nafiz Chowdhury (2 /4).
High batsmen decided it was time to show their colours and hang in there and score runs, but were
denied runs for their time at the crease and did not leave much time for our more accomplished
bats to come into play and we finished with a remarkable effort of 118. However not to reflect on
the boys who batted early who did well. Best batting came from Jeffery Chen (42) who has played
consistently well throughout the season followed by Matthew Wong (18) and Victor Ung (12)

Tennis
FIRST GRADE
Sat 12 March Grammar - vs High (R7)
The final match of the GPS season was a somewhat unusual experience. We had secured second spot
on the ladder (a mathematical hope of coming first) and Grammar were entrenched at the other end.
And for four of us, it was the last time we would represent High in tennis. As such there were
mixed emotions - there was no great incentive to win, but a chance to go out on a high note. The
number one doubles pair of Dejan Bodrozic and Peter Pereira won the first set in ten minutes and
the second almost as quickly. Mitchell Kelly and Hung Neo at three won comfortably after a
Grammar player was late. Brian Ly and Ivan Cerecina had to work a little but the former's awesome
serve saw them through. With three doubles in hand, we wanted to make a clean sweep of the
singles as well, as we hadn't won a match 12-0 since 2002. We came very close to achieving
this.
Dejan, Brian, Mitchell and Peter were workmanlike in straight-sets victories. Hung struggled to
find any consistency, and Ivan steadied himself to go through in three. The final result was
11-1, a satisfactory result which leaves us on 63 points (one short of our total last
year).
The team has performed quite well this year, although a premiership would have been most
satisfying. There have been some outstanding individual performances - Dejan and Brian being
named numbers 1 and 2 in the GPS Combined firsts team, in particular. There are a few other thank
yous that we owe- to the parents for the sumptuous afternoon teas and support all year; to our
supporters (especially the year 12s against Riverview); Dr. Jaggar for his continued support of
tennis; Mr Boros, for another fantastic season; Carl Nielsen for his dedication to coaching us;
and finally Ms Tuthill, our hardworking MIC whose work behind the scenes keeps us on the courts.
As this is the last GPS match for many of us, it would be remiss of me to not mention the school
for affording us such a great opportunity to play each week. It has truly been an honour and
privilege to represent Sydney High at the highest level for many years, and it is to be hoped
that our successes can be continued into the future.
Peter Pereira - 1st Grade Captain
SECOND GRADE
Sat 12thMarch.- Grammar vs High (R7)
Looking to cement the 6th position of the ladder, High seniors were also hoping to end their High
tennis career on a high! In the no1 doubles Alex & David played a patient controlled match to
win 0-6, 6-1, 6-2 while Hieu & Hai cruised in the second doubles despite a minor hiccup 6-2,
0-6, 6-1. Martin & Paul were unlucky to go down spoiling their perfect, to date, winning
streak. With two doubles out of three, Alex and Hai extended High's lead to 4-2, preserving their
impressive scores throughout the GPS season. David, Hieu, Paul and Martin showed signs of
excellence but their respective opponents were too consistent and Grammar raced away with the
matches and the final scoreline.
As Captain of the Sydney High 2nd Grade Tennis 2005, I'd like to thank my team for their
commitment and support week in and week out. Having been involved with GPS tennis for the past 6
years, I'm sure many of the seniors will agree with me that positive experiences truly outweigh
the downsides regardless of the match outcomes and it's something that I'll cherish for the rest
of my life. To junior players of the 2nds Tennis, I wish you the best of luck in your pursuit of
1st Grade selection and hope that you have learnt as much as I have from being part of a great
team.

13's As No results entered, this week. A very good effort by the new team
Bs 2 boys have been selected by Carl Neilsen for a trial period to
Cs play Friday a.m. with the squad. Thanks to the whole team
Ds and their parents for a great start at SHS GPS TENNIS.
15s
It was a weekend of many missed opportunities for the 15s. The Ds were, as usual, exceptional in
blitzing Grammar to a 6-0 match total. Of note - Alex and Edwin who are yet to be beaten this
term. Congratulations boys. Tam showed no signs of nervousness after being told to step in to D4
at the last minute.
In the Cs the unbeaten run of duo Matthew Rusli and James Ip came to an end, although James took
consolation in being another team member who was undefeated this season. Daniel Chim also took
things easy in his singles and has been constantly improving.
The Bs results were the most frustrating to swallow because in the 2nd doubles, Adrian's singles
and Simons singles matches were all leading comfortably in the final stages but unfortunately
celebrated too early and actually ended up losing it.
In the As, Grammar was simply a superior outfit. The Grammar As would definitely be up there in
terms of competitiveness with SIC, so boys should be commended for their effort regardless. The
bright spark amongst the As though remains to be Jason Cohn, who seems to have a knack of winning
tough, tight matches and has developed immensely throughout the season. I have had a great season
with the 15s and hope to continue next season.
