Remembrance service for Mr Fittler
In a dignified and moving ceremony at the Steele
Barracks Chapel last Sunday, cadet officers, family, friends, colleagues, old boys and students
paid their respects and honoured the life of John Fittler. High CUOs carried Captain Fittler's
slouch hat and ceremonial sword to the altar and saluted his memory. A large contingent of cadets
stood outside the overflowing chapel to hear the service conducted by Lieutenant Colonel Colin
Aiken, Chaplain of the Army Cadets. Eulogies were delivered and hymns sung. I was very proud of
the High boys for the way they conducted themselves on this emotional occasion.
Oarsmen command attention at Penrith
Our senior rowers were excited after their performances on a muggy morning at the International
Regatta Centre on Saturday. The fours have some ground to make up being >10% off the winning
time. The boys gave their all and rowed hard to the finish. The second VIII had a strong race to
finish fourth, just 4.4% off the winning time and well within the 5% margin of excellence. The
first VIII finished nearly a boat length clear in fourth place, with the chance of a podium
finish at the Head of the River a genuine goal for their training efforts from now on. Their time
was 3.4% off the winner's - a clear indication of their quality. Earlier, the GPS Year 10 eights
showed that low 6m 20s will be the benchmark for 2000m at the Head of the River. Congratulations
to all the boys for their dedication and to Mark Prater and David Luscombe for preparing them so
well.
Tennis victory at Kingsford
A major experiment with the doubles combinations by coach Carl Nielsen paid off as High secured
the three doubles for the first time this season. In hot and humid conditions, Ivan Cerecina
played strongly in his return to first grade. Brian and Dejan had easy wins. Our boys overcame
their opposition in the singles without much trouble except a determined number 5 from Joeys
outlasted Alex Zinzopoulos. Storm clouds threatened to wash out the final matches but Mitchell
Kelly came back in 3 sets to win the final match as the rain started falling. High's result of
11-1 was not good enough to peg back Riverview's 6-point lead as they demolished Newington by the
same margin.
High Store trademark policy
All support groups and committees are reminded that school policy is - everything to do with
clothing and logos goes through the High Store. It is illegal to reproduce the school's crest
without permission of the Foundation through its nominee, Michelle Gentele. Companies caught
supplying merchandise with even remote likenesses to our trademark can be sued and fined. Please
check with Michele before dealing with any supplier of any apparel.
Support for the High Store
Teachers should insist on school uniform being worn,
particularly at sport. This means school T-shirts and shorts as well as school swimming costumes.
We are considering mandating school shirts with our logo to identify our boys. There has been a
call for Saturday trading to be offered at the High Store. We have nominated Saturday April 2 and
Saturday April 30 as possible trading mornings 0830-1030. Michele will open if she has bookings
or expressions of interest for merchandise on those days. Book now to make the trial effective.
Weights Room Shake up
Thanks to Jason Tassell of TJs Gym for attracting 90 boys to
sign up for term 1! A great show of support. Keep it up boys and performance benefits will
follow!
School bus acquisition
Laurie Heil has researched and bargained for some time and
now secured a big bus for school use. School Family committees are invited to discuss ways in
which this asset might be used to reduce transport costs to events. Up to 76 passengers may be
carried on short trips c30mins. A heavy rigid licence is required to drive the bus. Current bus
hire costs are $200 per trip.

Whichever way you say it, it is hard to say goodbye to our
SUSIE MCGUINNESS.
After 27 years at Sydney Boys High School, Susie has decided to retire. Susie has worked with
three Principals and has worn many hats as a member of the School Administrative Staff, most
notably her role as Editor Extraordinaire of the High Notes. The weekly production would not be
the standard it is without her input. This edition is, sadly, her last. We thank her for her
dedication, her loyalty and mostly her friendship. Her shoes will be hard to fill and she will be
very much missed. We wish her much happiness today and always.

Counsellor times for 2005
Estelle Harman will be available for counsellor support each Tuesday and Thursday in 2005. Ms.
Susy Plummer will be available each Monday and every second Friday. Students can self refer to
the Counsellor by going directly to the Counsellor's room upstairs in the McDonald Wing or by
making an appointment at the main office. Parents with concerns can phone the counsellors on
school phone numbers and discuss their concerns or make an appointment to meet in person.
Taking Charge for Teenagers - Managing Stress, Anxiety and the Blues
"Taking Charge"
is a group program for students between 15-18 years, who are experiencing increased stress
levels, elevated anxiety and/or feeling down or depressed. The program is conducted by the Health
Psychology Unit (Director Dr. Anthony Kidman) and is part of the University of Technology,
Sydney, located at the Royal North Shore Hospital. Participants are taught to apply self help
strategies to take greater control over stressful life experiences and thereby reduce anxiety,
and boost self esteem.
The next "Taking Charge" Program commences on Monday 28 February and will run over eight weekly
sessions, between 4.00 and 5.30pm. Each group has 6-12 participants and groups are conducted at
the Health Psychology Unit, located at the Royal North Shore Hospital at St. Leonards. For more

FIRST GRADE Round 12 Saturday 19 February 2005

Joey's had come off a narrow
one-point loss the previous week to the run-away front runners Newington, and were looking for
revenge and an exceptional result.
Josh Kraindler could not suit up for High as he paid a visit to the dentist to get his wisdom
teeth removed. Hopefully the pain and swelling will go away before next week's game. Therefore
since Josh did not suit up, there was no "Shane Time" recorded this week. Sorry guys.
St. Joseph's were a lot taller and quicker than the High boys, giving High little hope of
winning. High started the match poorly and Joeys made them pay. Joey's Australian shooting guard
import, L. Kirwan, hit threes from all angles on the court, while their captain Jake Jones used
every inch of his 6 foot and 6 inches height to gather a huge number of offensive rebounds and
finish with simple put-back baskets. This enabled Joey's to have a comfortable lead at quarter
time.
High played their best basketball during the third quarter. High came out after the break with a
renewed spirit and confidence. Fired up by inspirational captain Cameron Conway, High started
running their plays, which resulted in easy scores. Also smart decision making and some good
passing from the guards allowed for some easy shots. By the end of the 3rd quarter High outscored
the Joey's boys 14-9 through great leadership by Captain Cameron Conway, point guard Dustin
Palana and great rebounding by centre Tom Mainprize.
The fourth quarter showed what High is really made of. Even though the game was well out of reach
due to an insurmountable margin, the High boys continued to fight right to the death with
determination and spirit; refusing to be blown away. High came up with great passages of play
that would have enabled them to compete right throughout the game, but inconsistency had let them
down again. Looking ahead to next week's game against SHORE, High need to improve on their
ability to switch on right on game time and be not blown out after the first quarter. Once this
is rectified, High is a good chance against any outfit in the GPS competition.
Though there was a large difference in points made, its encouraging to see that the High defence
in the second half limited the Joeys offensive juggernaut to just around 30 points. High
supporters should not be too disheartened at this result as St. Joseph's are one of the leading
GPS teams and are current vying for second spot on the GPS ladder. Next week against SHORE we
would like another big turn-up for our game, and since SHORE are going through a rough spot of
their own, we are a great chance to win this one.

High were coming into the Joeys
game full of confidence and were looking forward to a positive result after a week of solid
training. After a quarter of dismal basketball from High Joeys looked to win the game with ease.
Joeys played a full court defence and caused panic right through the High boys which led to many
unfortunate turnovers. Soon the High boys were faced with a 15 point deficit and looked as though
they had no hope. The second quarter saw no improvement from the High boys as the Joey's side
continually ran the court and converted many easy points to lead at half time by 10 points. With
inspirational guard Lewis D'Avigdor leading the High boys a string of good plays and defensive
work closed the Joey's lead to just three points. The momentum with them, the High Boys were
carried into the final quarter and once again vital points from Lewis and two vital shots from
guard Harry Walker kept High within range of victory. The Game came down to the final minute
where the crowd was raucous and the High supporters were on the edge of their seats. Lewis
D'Avigdor came up with a HUGE clutch lay-up in the final minute to give High a one point lead.
Getting over excited and complacent the High boys slacked off on defence and soon Joey's were
able to score consecutive baskets to close the game with a 9 point win. Full credit goes to the
High boys for staying in the game even at times when they were down by 15 points; great teamwork
during the third quarter showed future signs of a promising basketball team.

3rds make it 2 in a row!!!!
After a tough win over a well-drilled Kings side the
week before, Sydney High 3rds went into the fixture against Joeys full of confidence that we
would be able to perform against the larger opposition. From the tip-off this confidence was
converted into some solid defence that repelled constant attack from Joeys throughout the first
half. Our offence, however, was somewhat lacklustre with far too many turnovers early on.
However, our defence led by David Greenup, Philip Tripp and William Xu held its own, and we went
to the break up by six. The beginning of the second half was dominated by Walter Hong, who scored
seven points, including a huge three, in the space of 5 minutes. Our intensity continued to lift
throughout the game, and, despite a few lapses, refused to descend to the level of Joeys, who
decided to stop playing basketball, piling up over 10 team fouls in the process. All in all it
was a great effort by the whole team resulting in a winning margin for High, 36-24.

15 As
On behalf of the 15As, I would like to welcome our newest addition, Stuart, to the team. He made
a great impact on Saturday's game, scoring some great goals and playing some very tight defence.
Everyone else also played brilliantly, and had it not been for Joeys' many fast breaks, we
wouldn't have lost by nearly as many points. At the end of the first half Joeys were leading
30-8, having scored every one of their goals on a fast break after either intercepting a lob pass
or winning a rebound. In the second half (much to our benefit) we stopped doing lob passes and
started making more of our drives. Somehow Joeys still managed to score more points then us, and
their lead only increased. Although we left the court with a loss, we also left with the
determination to beat them next time. Well done 15 As.

All teams came into Saturday's game hoping to carry their form from last week.
The Ds, Cs and Bs all won their matches comfortably with solid defence and great teamwork. The As
however were a different story. The Joeys team contained the likes of 1st grade rugby
five-eighth, Kurtley Beale. Nevertheless the As were confident for another win. We started the
game off with a half court man hoping to force some turnovers. To Joeys credit they executed many
pick and rolls causing our defence to crumble. Hard drives from Alex Vertoudakis and Jamie Tao
kept us within striking distance. Half way through the 1st half we switched to a zone hoping to
force Joeys into shooting. Instead their big men posted down low and with their height and power
could perform simple lay-ups. By half time the As were losing by more than 15. In the 2nd half,
with the zone obviously not working, we changed back to man again. This seemed to work for a
while with our strongest team on the court. Jaffe Chiu and Moussa Farhat played hard defence
causing many turnovers and our offence was organised well with Victor Nguyen dishing out many
assists. As the game entered its final stages, fatigue set in. Joeys took advantage of this with
strong defence and endless fast breaks. Missing many shots form the free throw line the lead
increased to 19, leaving the score at 46-27. Beaten mostly by 3 or 4 players who we had never
seen before in all our years of playing, with Shore next week the As hope to get the season
back on track.

Cricket
Sportsmanship is far from lost in the GPS competition as High have experienced in the last two
weeks. As you may recall last week the report how Scots Under 16 team bowled an extra over to
give our High batsman Louis Yang on 49, the chance to achieve his 50. Last Saturday in the 14 B
fixture against St. Joseph's where we were obviously outgunned in the batting department, the
team coach approached me and offered to limit his team's innings to give our boys a second
opportunity to bat which we accepted. The premise of the discussion was that both teams had
arrived to play cricket and participation was the keynote, not a crushing defeat by one team over
another. Our congratulations to both Schools' coaches for these acts of sportsmanship.
FIRST XI (Day 1) High 9 /214 versus St. Joseph's
After a poor start on a wicket playing in favour of the bowling team we saw Mark Carroll on
debut, play his strokes for a solidly made 43 to steady the innings in the pre lunch session.
After the lunch break High buckled down and worked their way back into contention with
disciplined shot selection and by valuing their wickets to help High reach 9 / 214 before play
was abandoned due to the storm arriving from the south; Damitha Fonseka finished with 70 no. Next
week High have the opportunity to put St.Joseph's under pressure in chasing what can be regarded

SECOND XI (Day 1) High 10 / 125 versus St. Joseph's 1 / 16
St.Joseph's put High into bat on a strip not usually used by senior teams which seemed unusual as
our openers put on 60 runs, before losing a wicket and in the 10 overs before lunch High
collapsed to be 5 /85. At the resumption the rot continued and High were all out for 125 in the
54th.OVER. St.Joseph's then had their turn at the crease and were 1 / 16 when bad light and
weather saw play abandoned. Best Batting - Shaheen Kumar 32, Manusha Samaraweera 25 and D'arcy
Blaxell made 20. In the short stint at the bowling crease, Nathan Frazi finished with 1 for 3

THIRD XI-(Day 1) - High 10 / 117 versus St. Joseph's 0 / 60
Buoyed with 3 wins from 4 matches, High went into bat pumped up for a good result. After the
openers got off to a good start, the wheels started to fall off and wickets were lost every
second over and we were soon 4 for 24. The captain Anisul Islam came to the crease and in a blitz
of 4 overs of the bowling, finished with 51 and High had some respectability with 117 on the
board. Joey's batted for 17 overs and finished the day at 0 for 60 See website report.
UNDER 14 A (Day 1)- High 10 / 78 versus St. Joseph's 6 / 171
In trouble at 5 wickets for 7 after electing to bat, High ground out the overs finishing at a
creditable 10 /78. After an early breakthrough having Joey's at 2 for 6, we let them off the hook
and they recovered to 6 /171 at stumps. Our best bowler on the day was newcomer Shadman Ali with

UNDER 13 A - High 10 / 53 defeated by St. Joseph's 3 / 243 (5 batsmen retired)
A remarkable turnaround from last week and a spirit lifter for the team which should engender
more confidence. This week at sport we concentrated on defensive and driving batting drills, as
well as tidying up some bowling actions. It will be interesting to see the results this
week.

Further improvement in our final score this week, but we are quickly developing a "duck farm" in
company with the 13 As which we trust will not increase this week. Together with the A team,
drills were the focus at sport this week and we look forward to the boys achieving more
satisfaction with their cricket

CRICKET COMMITTEE and GENERAL MEETING.
A reminder that the meeting of this committee will be held next Wednesday in Room 901 at the
gymnasium at 6:00pm. The Cricket Dinner will be discussed and final arrangements made for the
night's organization.
CRICKET DINNER and PRESENTATION OF AWARDS.
Will be held on SATURDAY 2nd April from 6:30pm for 7:00pm in the Great Hall at School. DRESS for
all cricketers attending is SCHOOL UNIFORM on the night as photographs will be taken. Awards will
be presented to each team from 1st XI, through to all of our junior teams for Batting, Bowling
and Team Player / Fielding and award winners are expected to be present on the night. Payment for
the Dinner is made at the school office and the final date for those attending is THURSDAY
24th.March 2005. The cost of dinner and drinks is expected to remain the same as last season for
all teams. Liquid refreshments for adults will also be available on the night.

FIRST GRADE
Sat 19thFeb. - St Josephs vs High (R4)
High Lite: 11-1
Sydney High had its first home match of the season against a St
Joseph’s side coming off a recent win. This did not at all deter us; rather it gave us the
incentive to really put the cleaners through ‘Joey’s’. With Riverview extending
their lead to 6 points, we needed to maximise our return in this fixture. I noted last week that
we would show no mercy to the opposition, and that’s exactly what we did. We altered our
doubles combinations to increase our chances of taking all three and this move had the potential
to completely backfire. Brian Ly and Peter Pereira blitzed the opponents at 1,Dejan Bodrozic and
Ivan Cerecina played well to win at 2 and most notably, Mitchell Kelly and Alex Zinzopoulos came
through7/5. 7/5 at 3. Taking all three doubles was a terrific effort, and virtually ensured we
would win. However, we needed as many points as we could get. Brian overwhelmed his no.1
counterpart, Dejan mauled his rival, Peter overcame illness to win and Alex never quite found his
rhythm at 5. This left Mitchell and Ivan on court, and as the day progressed, the main opposition
was not coming from the opposition, rather the heavens. Ivan finished first, scoring a solid win
at no 6, leaving Mitchell with the honour of closing proceedings. He did this with aplomb,
battling some indifferent form and holding his nerve to win in three sets.
The 11- 1 result is certainly pleasing and matches Riverviews’s result against Newington.
Thus the next two weeks will be crucial for us if we are to truly challenge for the title. I
believe the team is beginning to peak and this should hold us in good stead for our clash this
week with a capable Shore outfit.

Sydney High produced an impressive performance against the 4th ranked school of the
GPS competition, St Josephs. The no. 1 doubles David & Henry 6-1,6-2 lost at the hands of a
more disciplined consistent partnership, while Martin & Paul easily disposed of their no.3
doubles opponent 6-2, 7-5. Meanwhile Hai & Hieu were unable to outlast their opponents in a 3
setter marathon going down 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. Henry and David commenced their respective singles
Henry winning in straight sets 6-1,6-1. but David being defeated. At 3 rubbers to 2, the 4
remaining singles would determine the final scoreline. Hieu and Paul were cruising comfortably at
6-2,4-1 and 6-1,2-1, when the forbidding clouds became torrential rain & lightning. Play
stopped for 40mins, then out came the squeegees, Hai & Martin went out to even their score 1
set all. Unfortunately Hieu & Paul were not able to play as the remaining courts were
flooded. On previous occasions High 2nds have been defeated through lack of judgement or skill,
not battling treacherous weather. Hence the last 4 singles were drawn, giving Joey’s a win
6.5 – 5.5. On a positive note we thank SHS cricket players for their enthusiastic support,
and look forward to Shore next!

The Stan Jones Knock Out is run immediately after the GPS Season. Tennis players in Senior tennis
are invited to apply to try out for the team. There are 4 places with 2 reserves.

This excerpt is to assist players who
may be without knowledge in relation to coaching during a match and unreasonable delays. 1.
Coaching A player shall not receive coaching from any person during a match. First offence a
warning, second offence a point penalty, third offence further point penalties. 2. Leaving the
court A player shall not leave the court area during a match without the permission of the
referee. Penalty: default of that match

As the season draws to a close keep the above dates in mind. The remaining highlights are the
Junior dinner, which is for all Year 8 & 9 crews. It is held at Abbotsford and all parents
are welcome. Dress is full school uniform. The unusual part of this season is the early Gold Cup
Regatta which can be viewed from the grounds of St Ignatius College.
The Rowing Assembly is held the day before the Head of the River and all parents are welcome. It
begins at 11:30am and there is an occasional address, a junior rowing report by the stroke of the
1st Quad and a speech by the Captain of Boats. Crews will be presented to the Guest speaker.
The CHS Rowing Championships will be held at Taree on April 2 & 3 and will involve the 1st
& 2nd VIIIs, the 1st & 2nd IVs, some members of the Year 10 VIIIs, 1st & 2nd Quads
from Year 8 & 9 and selected others. Our contingent will be about 65 boys. There will be a
dinner on the Saturday night at Taree High School in school uniform.

School Access Upgrade
UPGRADE OF ACCESS TO SCHOOL - ANZAC PARADE APPROVED
Plans have been approved for the construction of three sandstone piers to hold patterned steel
gates and fencing, which will honour the memory of notable Old Boy, Sir Roden Cutler.
D.A. approval has now been granted so work can commence. Due to financial constraints it will be
necessary to complete the project in stages.
Construction on Stage One will commence once the figure of $37K is reached.
Previous generous donations towards the project have been held in trust and have gained interest,
however, a further $7K is needed to commence and complete Stage One.
I urge all School Family members to carefully consider a Tax Deductible Donation to the project
so as work can commence no later than Second Term.
