High Talent
Kevin Lui and Ryan Phung (12) have had their HSC work held back for possible inclusion in Art Express. Thank you to Neil Patterson for his renovation skills installing new amenities into the visual arts staff room.

Head Teacher Sport
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Richard Ayre to a new Executive position as Head Teacher Sport, commencing in 2006. Mr Ayre comes to High from Endeavour Sports High School where he has been Head Coach of cricket and baseball for seven years. He is a former NSW representative in three sports, winning several CHS titles. He holds Level 3 coaching credentials in cricket and is a former international baseball umpire. He has event management experience. He was employed by SOCOG in the delivery of baseball at the Olympic Games in Sydney 2000, after successfully fulfilling his role as Billet and Liaison Officer at the preceding Pacific School Games. He has Sports Administration experience as President of North Coast School Sport, as an elected member of the Lismore District Sports Trust, as Tournament Director for the inaugural Asian Baseball Championships and as CHS Baseball Convener. He has been relieving Head Teacher PE at Endeavour (2004-05). Mr Ayre is a qualified and experienced Careers Adviser. He is currently involved in the Performing Arts team at Endeavour and is a former 7th grade violinist. He will provide strength, experience, development and support to our Sports Programs, coaching strategies and administration.

Old Boys Union Response
I received from Mr Livingston emailed confirmation of the OBU policy in respect of student membership as follows:

1. The OBU will provide a Student Extended Membership, for a period of 10 years, to all students who have paid 6 annual instalments.
2. They do not have to be paid in advance – only once per annum.
3. Those who are in the ‘old system’ at $33 can continue until Year 12.
4. All will have the option to converting to Life Membership during the Extended Membership period and have their paid fees deducted from the Life Membership fee.
5. All students who have paid the full fee (one per year for 6 years) will be invited to a function early in the year following Y12, where they will be entered on the roll of the OBU as full voting members.

Chess at High
Mr Harvey has looked after our chess program for many years without assistance. After representations from our Year 7 Parent Group, and with Mr Harvey’s agreement, we will engage Old Boy Alex Feldman as our chess coach. We need to ramp up our skills in junior chess by explicit teaching of chess theory and practice, combined with more frequent competition. Our objective is to build up to 28 players competing in four divisions. To this end, the school will provide coaching services for up to 3 hours per week to build the program. Intra school competitions and a selection tournament will be organised to raise the activity’s profile. I will be allocating an increased budget to chess in 2006 to resource the initiative.

Sculpture by the Sea

On the 15th November year 8acc made their way to Bondi Beach. Our mission was to view ‘The Beach’ and its impact on Australian Literature. We brought with us cameras, sun block and texts responding to the beach.

Once everyone arrived, our class set off towards Tamarama enjoying the sculptures on the way. I really enjoyed the mini bus, pyramid of nails and the huge fried egg. I thought the giant weighing scales were an ironic exhibit considering the body building exercise equipment on the walk!

After the walk, our class visited the Life Savers Museum in the Bondi Icebergs. The class was given a talk by an ‘ex’ lifesaver. She told us stories of shark attacks and rescues.

Lunch was cut short due to the sudden change of weather, the day turned icy cold, wet and windy.

Back at Bondi Pavilion we read through, and discussed the texts we had brought with us that linked the beach to Australian Culture. The texts ranged from songs, to picture books, to poetry and short stories.

A display of some of the work we have completed for this unit and during the year is in the corridor outside the English staffroom. ENJOY!

Linguists Logistics

The German Film Competition
Congratulations to Klasse 8 Deutsch for winning a DVD movie “The Miracle of Bern” for their participation in this year’s Goethe Institute National Film Competition.

The class is to be commended for its insight, perseverance, humour and creativity.

The theme “Time, Light and Space”, was chosen because 2005 is the Year of Physics. Albert Einstein inspired our talented script writer, Michael Zhou, to write “Einstein’s Return”, skilfully directed by Johan Santoso. Our talented story boardist, Mishu Osinski, brought the German script to life visually and the whole crew co-operated to produce a humorous portrayal of time travel from the year 2050 back to the present “when the technological madness first really began”.

Adam Richards’ and Anthony Hopkins’ concept for the time machine they built was also praised by the panel of judges, who viewed our film with 15 others chosen from the 61 school entries, on a Fox Studio cinema screen!

We gratefully acknowledge the support of Mr Osinski, who provided the camera equipment, expertise in the field and joined us many early mornings on locations around our school campus.

Unity in Diversity, SCEGGS

On Wednesday, 16th of November, a handful of very fortunate students from year 10 were given the opportunity to participate in a student Symposium, Unity in Diversity 2005. It was the very first of its kind; a large scaled open discussion that aimed to effectively open the eyes of our generation to the underlying issues of our world that threaten to break our society. Such issues include terrorism, responsible world leaders, poverty, the United Nations and the relentless reign of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa. Held at SCEGGS Darlinghurst, the school were host to various private schools including St Spyridon, Brigidine College, St Mary’s Cathedral College and of course Sydney Boys, because we’re special.

The symposium was conducted through various small group discussions, poster board making and at the end a large scale group discussion whereby everyone had the opportunity to voice their opinions and thoughts that would be drafted into a letter to be sent to various organizations, newspapers and the Prime Minister.

The main issue of the day explored the divisions and gap between groups in our society, with the focus question being ‘In light of major world events, has there been a greater move towards unity or is the gap between groups in society and the world becoming larger?’

It was a great day and I’d like to thank Ms Luithle for allowing us to participate in such an enlightening experience, which turned out to be more than just a free meal but an eye opener to the world in which we live in and the world that we should thus care for.

Amnesty International Australia @ High

When everyone is born they are given inalienable rights: the rights to justice, equality and freedom. We are lucky to live in a country like Australia, where most of its citizens can afford to take these rights for granted. Unfortunately however, there are countries in which human rights are treated like a luxury.

Day in, day out, all over the globe, people become prisoners of conscience – declared as criminals solely for their beliefs, gender, sexuality or ethnicity. All they do is peacefully express their rights: nonetheless they are imprisoned, tortured or ‘disappeared.’

Amnesty International Australia (AIA) is an international organisation dedicated to taking action on behalf of these people suffering from human rights violation. Since 1961 AIA has influenced many governments to restore the freedom of countless prisoners of conscience – all because of the enthusiasm and effort of its members.

School groups are an important foundation to AIA. As a student, you have the opportunity to act as a human rights defender and effect positive change to our often bleak state of international affairs. With your help, and the help of many others, AIA will be more successful in defending our essential civil and political rights in the future.

Over the last few weeks we have devoted a lot of time and energy to the high profile case of Van Tuong Nguyen, the Australian citizen convicted of drug trafficking in Singapore who is scheduled to be hanged on December 2nd. Help us to do everything possible to stop the execution, and take action today. Text ‘SAVE VAN, your name, suburb, state and optional message of support’ to 1977 4539. Amnesty will deliver your message to the Singapore High Commission.

Friday November 25th begins a campaign of 16 Days of Action to stop violence against women. It is also White Ribbon Day, when NSW Amnesty International members sell white ribbons to people in the community to raise awareness of human rights and their abuses, and to raise much needed funds to keep this important organisation going. Our members will be selling ribbons in the community today, and within the school in the sixteen days of action. If you see an Amnesty member selling ribbons, please buy one in support of stopping violence against women.

St Johns Park Public School

Mrs Nan Catmur, a long serving member of the teaching staff of St Johns Park Public School, is retiring at the end of the 2005 school year. Mrs Catmur has been a dedicated teacher for the past 25 years. St Johns Park Public School are organising a special assembly to allow present and past students to farewell her in the manner in which she deserves.

Many past students of St Johns Park Public School are now attending SBHS and are invited to say their farewells.  The special assembly will be held on Monday, 19th December and will commence at 2pm. If more details are required please contact the school on 96101311.

Volleyball Report #15

U17s Match Report from the Metro schools Tournament on 13th November.
On 13/11, the U17s team of Sydney High played in the Metro schools Cup at Olympic Park and came second.

The team consisted of Alex Le, Alex Le, Victor Nguyen, Jamie Tao, Ping Lu, Sam Chhor, Jordan Luong, David Dizon, Terry Ly (as acting coach due to him rolling his ankle) and myself.

We played many schools and all the games were pretty relaxed until we met Cumberland High and Christian Brothers.

The Cumberland Boys were big, much taller and powerful than our short team. There were great spikes from Jamie, Ping and Victor as well as magnificent plays decided by our setter Alex (Le). Sam and Dizon’s loud jeering attitude led to our opponents fall in spirit (and resulting enmity). Through wonderful communication and teamwork, we beat the Cumberland boys 2-0. However, this was not the last we saw of them, for they were refereeing our finals against Christian Brothers.

Although the team played well, we were let down by the fact that we were not being given points even though we had scored them. This made us even angrier and led to even more wonderful spikes by Jamie, Victor and Ping. Also the loudness (and atmosphere) created by Sam, Dizon, Alex and Jordan helped to keep the spirit of High alive – making us fight even harder for the points.

Next time, we will definitely beat Christian Brothers. Good work boys

Rowing Report

Another busy week of High Rowing has been and gone. Last Saturday, 19 November, the annual Head of the Parramatta took place.  The junior eights as well as selected junior quads took part in this prestigious event. The High crews fought hard down the gruelling four and a half kilometre time trial, held between the Ryde Bridge and Sydney Rowing Club.  Special mention must go to both the Year nine first (Alex, Belokopytov, Nelson Ridges, Nick Dimitropoulos, Matt Ling and Pat Desmond) and second quads (Anthony Tsiailis, Dennis Stojanovic, Tom Harvey, Roy Chen and Nick Lindeback), both of which managed to gain fourth place in their respective events, despite tough competition from other crews of the GPS schools.

While the junior crews were fighting it out down the river, the senior A squad, consisting of the first and second eights, took the opportunity to improve their racing technique, speed and performance out at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith. Following the motivational and encouraging words of two High old boys the night before, the boys put it in down the Head of the River course and learnt some valuable lessons about their maximum speeds and ratings and how to take full advantage of the crew’s power and strength under racing conditions as they prepare for the upcoming racing season.

In other words prepare thoroughly now to allow you a chance to handle what is to come………

Physical Preparation for Winter Sports
For those of you who have had a lazy lay off from training over the past few months, now is the time to dust off those trainers & start your preparation for next season. Whether its skill/size/strength/power/agility/speed or endurance that requires work, allowing enough time for physical and neural adaptation to occur is crucial to ensuring a successful preparation. In the weights room there are a number of programs to help you achieve your goals. If its skill you need to develop, see your coach or MIC for guidance.

GPS sport is a tough arena and you compete against schools who take pride in preparing early, preparing thoroughly and preparing to win. So be smart and give yourself a physical fighting chance.
Over the January holidays the weights room will be open during specified hours. This timetable will be put together over the next 2 weeks and will be printed in the High Notes as well as being available in flyer form from the weights room. Some time slots will be allocated exclusively to certain sports groups with others for general use. There will also be no charge for this month so if you have been thinking about starting a program then this is an ideal time to begin as the pressures of school work are less. The only rule for use during this time is that you will have to obtain from the weights room a medical questionnaire/contact details form and bring it back before starting. As the school is not open at this time it is essential that parent/guardian contact details be on hand in the event of accident/injury. This is non-negotiable and you will be refused entry without it.

Strength testing
A yearly Strength Training Honour Board will be put together at the end of each year with age group strength champions listed. Final Testing begins next week.

Next Year 
Thinks on the horizon include

• Addition and upgrading of some gym equipment at the school weights room and the final touches to be finished at the boat shed weight room.
• 2006 SBHS Strongman Challenge. Date TBA.
• Expanded opening times
• Everyone Bigger Stronger Faster

Whilst a huge number of CLOSE LOSSES this week is disappointing, these results show an improvement on this time last year VS shore.
The results from this term ARE VERY PROMISING FOR THE FUTURE.
HARRY WALKER (Year 10) is starting to make a name for himself in first grade as a prolific point scorer.
STUART SUGITO (Year 9) top scored for the seconds and will prove to be a force in the future.
BEN WANG (Year 9) is unleashing his pure talent in the 16Ds, improving rapidly with every game.
DANNY NG (Year 9) dominated the boards in the 16As.

It is awesome to see the 15As and 14As continue their fantastic seasons!!!

1ST GRADE VS SHORE MATCH REPORT
Score: 53-94 (loss) Top Scorer: H.Walker 20
High were well prepared for one of the toughest games of the season against an extremely well drilled Shore outfit which traditionally suffocated opposition teams by employing a very effective man-to-man defence.
High started the match extremely well by running fast break plays, under the direction of coach Salomon, very effectively through pin point passes by guard Harry Walker, scoring some easy baskets. Meanwhile, forwards Moussa Farhat and Victor Wei doubled teamed Shore’s star forward remarkably well, allowing him only 1 or 2 touches of the ball the whole quarter. This saw a shell-shocked Shore panic, eager to hear the quarter time buzzer while High soared into quarter time leading, 16-15. The second quarter was much the same story, with High running their offensive plays perfectly. As usual, Harry Walker and small forward Dale Sun kept the scoreboard ticking over consistently, while shooting guard Raymond Huynh entertained the crowd by landing two huge 3s. Meanwhile Point guard Victor Nguyen hit a 3 of his own and combined well with Eugene, who finished off an excellent move after a great drive and dish by Victor. However, Shore showed why they were top of the table with some accurate shooting, and they took a slender lead into the main break 35-33.
Unfortunately for High, the fantastic performance in the first two quarters could not be replicated in the second two. Shore gained a lot of confidence from this, and soon dominated play. This time, it was Shore’s turn to run the fast break and they also managed to pull down numerous offensive rebounds. This shut High out of the game for the remaining two quarters and saw the score blow out to 94-53. Despite this score line, High took many positives out of the match which saw them compete with the top team in the competition for two full quarters. The final score definitely did not reflect the effort the High boys had put in all match.

2ND GRADE VS SHORE MATCH REPORT
Score: 31-68 (loss) Top Scorer: S Sugito 11
Coming into the match against Shore, we knew we would be up for a tough contest from the word go. Shore’s culture of playing strong man to man defence was evident from the tip off as they were able to contain our early attacking movements. To our credit we played a strong first quarter in which we matched the team, which many would rank as their favourites for the premiership almost point for point.
A few costly errors and silly turnovers resulted in the lead slipping away from us at the start of the second quarter but strong attacking movements from Justin Chow, Stuart Sugito, Alex Vertoudakis and Alex Lee saw High reduce this deficit as the quarter progressed. Nevertheless, Shore had managed to extend their lead by the end of the quarter.
The 3rd quarter saw High completely outclassed at the attacking end and Shore’s strong full court press resulting in many easy scores. Furthermore, Shore had almost 3 times as many offensive rebounds as we did and these second chance points all but put High out of the game by the break. Our defence, in particular our rebounding, is an area that we must address if we wish to match it with the better teams in the competition.
Playing for pride in the final quarter, High actually managed to outscore Shore with Kenny Huang, Alex Vertoudakis, Alex Lee and David Hu doing well at both ends of the court. As the captain watched on from the bench after fouling out, he was pleased to see the fighting spirit in the boys and if this could be harnessed for four quarters of basketball, High 2nd Grade stands a good chance of knocking off many of the higher ranked teams in the competition. As it stands High remain win-thirsty for yet another week.

Tennis: Networking

FIRST GRADE Sat 12th Nov - Shore vs High (R6)
High Lite: DBLS1: 1-3-6,3-6,DBLS 2: 0-6,3-6, DBLS3:1-6,5-7/2/3
On Saturday, High came up against a red hot Shore team (who are favourites to win the comp).

In the doubles, Mitch and Ivan played well together however, they were outclassed by a stronger duo. Hai and Boris (who stepped up from 2nds) worked well together. However, once again their opposition was too strong. David and Henry played a great match, and the match was closely contested. They were unlucky to lose the second set, after being 5-2 up. Nevertheless, they gained valuable match play.

In the singles, Mitch started off well, however, frustration crept into his game, and he was never able to regain momentum afterwards. Ivan put in a great effort, but his opponent was too strong on the day and simply hit him off the court. Hai started off slowly; however, he played a great second set which  could  have  gone  either way.   David played well, and hit some great
shots. However, his lack of consistency cost him the match. Boris and Henry both stepped up and played great tennis. However, once again the Shore players were simply too good on the day.

Overall, High gained some great match play from the day, and I’m sure that we will improve on these results this weekend against Newington.

Last Saturday, High went to Tennis World to play Shore under extremely hot conditions. With Boris moving up to 1st grade, Nikita came in to play for us. In the No 1 doubles, Chapman and Nikita teamed up and played bravely, losing mainly due to unforced errors. In the No 2 doubles, Thomas and Nelson lost the first set, with the intense heat causing both players to play badly. However, the pair played much better in the second set, coming back from 3-5 down to lead 6-5. The game went to a tie-break and once again at the crucial points they failed to convert the chances given to them and eventually lost the tie-breaker 8-6. Jourdan and AJ played a strong match, especially in the second set, but in the end  lost out to a more consistent pair.

In the singles, Chapman stepped up as No 1. Chapman played some good tennis but once again inconsistency caused him to lose the match in straight sets. Thomas started off strongly in the No 2 singles, leading 4-1 due to some strong winners and volleying. However Thomas, who had just recovered from a fever, was affected by the heat and began to hit some dismal shots, causing him to lose his lead and eventually the set 7-5. As the match went on, the sweltering heat proved too much to handle and he eventually had to forfeit the match as he was starting to get sick.  Nikita  tried gallantly but was defeated by a more consistent player.  Jourdan and AJ at No 5 and 6 put in great efforts but lost out to stronger opponents. However, the  spotlight should be placed on Nelson, who came back from an extremely unlucky  loss last week to win his first singles match for the 2nds as No 4! Nelson played very consistent tennis to beat his hot-tempered opponent in two straight sets.

COMPETITIONS

NATIONAL 1   TENNIS CHALLENGE – ALBURY  2005
Dejan Bodrozic  and Brian Ly are returning to finishing School with a trip to Albury to play in the National 1 Tennis Challenge. Last year Michael Hayes and Tim Neville joined Dejan AND Brian in the same tournament, where they came third, finishing a grand year of tennis as a team. GPS Champions, CHS State Champions as well as third in the country!

This years team will be:

This is a highly competitive team event with 6 days of matches. There are team matches of 3 sets in the morning and Individual matches in the afternoon. We wish them good luck, & good tennis!

High Cricket Bulletin

One more week of competition and all parents will breathe a sigh of relief in not having to dispatch our young cricketers on Saturday mornings until Term 1 2006.  We have two visiting teams in December, firstly the Year 9 Barberis Cup, 7th – 9th December, and Cheltenham (UK) College visit on Saturday 17th  December to play an invitation senior team from High. If you can assist on one or any of these days please contact me via email and details will be provided for the areas to be covered.  We will also need some assistance with scoring and post-match barbeque and lunch during the Cheltenham visit.

MIC AROUND THE GROUNDS
The 1st XI worked manfully during Day 1 against Shore who were at home for this third round encounter.  On a relatively hot day on the North Shore, High dismissed Shore for 211 and at stumps were 1/35 in reply, which should make Day 2 a very interesting contest.  The match can be won from this position and High’s line-up will need to bite the bullet and produce a determined and  consistent batting performance to achieve the result.  A full report appears herein.
The 2nd XI were at home on McKay 1 to Shore who batted first and were finally out for 151, assisted by 34 sundries (12 n.b., 12 wides, 10 LB/Byes) from an undisciplined High bowling and fielding display (12 dropped catches) High then went to the crease and at stumps were 5/34 and in a great deal of trouble.  Day 2 will be an uphill fight for the team to secure first innings points.
The 4th ‘Xtreme’ XI which contains several competent cricketers who could be playing in higher senior teams, ‘cruised’ to victory according to the bush wireless.  Hopefully I will receive a match report by carrier pigeon in the next day or so and we can all share and enjoy the result.  The team’s winning record is now 3 from 5 matches.
The 15As struck a very good and sustained bowling attach in batting first and could only muster a total of 48 against Shore.  At stumps Shore were 2/171 with Alisdair Brown and Timmy Lin the wicket-takers.  A focused effort in High’s 2nd innings this week will be required to avert an innings defeat but the boys in this team have the potential to achieve their goals if they put their minds to it and show a ‘bit of grit’.
The 15Bs are to be  congratulated  on a gutsy effort against  Shore in  being  all

out for 72, their best team total this season.  Mark Lucchitti (13), Lachlan Brown (13), Raghav Saggar (10*), Anthony Hopkins (9) and Julian Byrnes (9) all contributing to a good team performance.  Tasneem Choudhury took 2 for 30 off 5 overs as Shore went into a big-hitting mode and finished the day at 3/132.  This result should give these boys a lift and indicates just how much they are improving.  Well done lads.  The 14Bs were again given a team incentive, and continued on their upward path and produced their best team score this term, all out for 80.  Best batting from Nelson Wang, Adargh George, David Ma, William Lee and Duncan Latto.  Shore was 5/200 at the close of play which included a total of 26 sundries given up by High.  William Lee, Bill Wang and Daniel Latto shared the bowling honours.

PARKING – My thanks to those who turned out at short notice last Saturday Night and in particular to our ladies Rebecca Coutts and Judy Robinson, as well as Kieran Lewis and the 2nd XI boys.  Well done and we are now $2158 better off which will go towards the support of our young cricketers.

BILLETS – We are requesting all volunteers who will be providing billets for the Melbourne High School Year 9 visitors for 2 nights to confirm their number(s) by Thursday 1st December.  Players will have Parent Consent forms and Billet Returns on Thursday 24th November to take home for parents to fill out and return.  Please ask your son to produce the handout from the bottom of his schoolbag, which seems to be the permanent filing cabinet for High Notes and all handouts!!!                Laurie Heil, MIC

MATCH REPORTS
The 2nd XI will need to really fight tomorrow to save face after a great start to the season.  Thariq Razeen led the side well, after Eddy Blaxell received his well-deserved promotion to 1sts during the week. But with 6 dropped catches, 34 sundries and the heat to contend with Shore amassed 151.  Shore were 6/84 at lunch.  Batting at the end of the day is always tough on McKay, and High slumped to 5/34 at stumps.  Poor shot selection contributed to 4 wickets, while Razeen received a short ball at his head which he fended to the short leg fieldsman.  The boys have been out to prove all week that their early season form was no fluke, and aim to be placed at or near the top of the table over the Christmas break with a good performance here.

High are in a promising position at Northbridge in the 1st XI match against Shore.  On a typically good batting deck and with plenty of space on a large outfield, Shore gradually accumulated a total of 211.  Debutant Eddy Blaxell bowled tidily without luck (much to the disappointment of his 2nd XI supporters), while Malik Razeen again bowled well to claim another 4 scalps.  When High batted the team simply wanted to make it to stumps with all wickets intact, and they so nearly made it.  High lost their only wicket on the last ball of the day.  It is still, however, High’s best start to an innings this season and they aim to build on it tomorrow.  The firsts are a good chance in this match, and hopefully someone can get a big score and bring the team home.
