He was a stalwart of Sydney High. He worked tirelessly for years to bring our intranet up to first rate standard. He was widely respected for his work with the cadet unit and dedication to target rifle shooters. He will be greatly missed at our school. Our condolences go to his wife and family.

High Talent
GPS Summer Sport Last Saturday 5/2, a full round of games was played against Scots. Our first XI had a great morning breaking the back of the batting with line and length bowling by Damitha Fonseka who had 4 for 3 at one stage. At the basketball, the second grade side kept within a few points of Scots for most of the game. The last half minute was drama charged. A mix up with the shot clock resulted in the game being restarted at 51-50 to Scots with 20 seconds to go. Scots were fouled on the play and scored one free throw. Lewis D’Avigdor was fouled laying up for the equalizer. Alone on court, Lewis made the first throw. The second throw ringed out and the game was lost. In first grade our boys had a great first quarter, harassing Scots star point guard and holding the rest of the team to very few points. We could not convert many trips to the basket and did not build the sort of lead we could have, with higher percentage shooting options. In the second half, 3-pointers from downtown, fast breaks and steals by Scots broke the deadlock and our poor offensive plays continued. The game ended in a disappointing 48-76 loss. Meanwhile, our bowlers cleaned up Scots batsmen for 74, with Damitha grabbing 7 for 22 and young leggy Sam Robson 3 for 11. At the tennis, Scots proved to be unexpectedly strong in the doubles. Dejan and Brian had a tough three setter, while Peter and newcomer Mitchell Kelly had an easier time. In the singles, Peter Pereira, Brian Ly and Mitchell had easy wins to seal our victory. Back at the cricket our boys were self destructing against accurate bowling. Too quickly they were four down for few runs and it looked as though the impossible might happen and they would fail to make the first innings target. Matthew Fetherston steadied the innings with a solid knock as our boys inched their way to the total. Once over the hump they kicked on to make a modest 94. An outright win for either side next week is possible. At the tennis, Alex Zinzopoulos came back from a set down to beat the big serving Scots number 5 to get us our sixth match. Dejan need to lift to his best tennis to defeat a strong Scots number one in a tough encounter. The 10-2 result matched Riverview’s winning margin so we are well in contention for the title.

Your support is greatly appreciated. Year 7 Parents and StudentsA little over a week has passed and everyone has settled in very well. There have been only positive comments from teachers about how Year 7 have adapted to life at High. They have been punctual and polite, completing tasks to a pleasing standard, bringing their equipment and wearing their new uniforms with pride. So congratulations Year 7. I noticed that when Year 7 attended their first Sports Assembly on Friday, their behaviour was exemplary and I was proud of how mature and sensible they were. I will hold a brief form meeting each month.. Students will need to line up outside the hall at the start of Lunch 1. The meeting will be an informal chat where we can discuss anything of importance. Further information will be made available in the daily notices closer to the date.
I have received several phone calls from parents about a variety of matters and I want to take
this opportunity to remind parents to please get in touch with me if there is anything I can do
to help their son settle in to High. Regarding WestbusIMPORTANT NOTICE No Disruption to Bus Services On 31 January 2005 an administrator was appointed to operate Westbus and Blue Ribbon bus services. Career Central: Change of AddressREMINDER TO PARENTS If you have recently changed your address or have changed your employment the school needs to know. There have been a number of occasions when Administration have had difficulty contacting parents because of change of workplace. This is extremely important in a case of emergency. If parents are going to be out of the country for any length of time the Principal needs to know this information as well. Please ask your son to obtain a change of details form from the Main Office and also change forms for travel when changing your address Your son's travel passes will be affected if he does not have the correct address. Failure to complete these forms may result in your son not having a travel pass.
LETTERS RE ABSENCE/LATENESS/EARLY LEAVE If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Beringer, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 9.00am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by parent or guardian with the name date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up the red leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school.

Laurie Heil BasketballSHOOTI N’ HOOPS The prestigious Sydney High Basketball Newsletter – Issue #1&2 2005 FIRST GRADE Saturday 6th November – High VS Kings (Round 4). High entered the first round of this year unsure of what to expect from the competition leaders, Newington, who had the services of superstar player J. Wang again, returning from injury. It was certain that much effort would be placed into the game, and that High would try its best to defeat Newington. After a tough training schedule during the holidays and a friendly win over SCEGGS Redlands 72-57, High were ready to resume the season where they had left off, winning against Scots for the last match of last season. However, Newington came out hard and played extremely well, outclassing High in the early stages of the match. Newington scored at a very quick rate with J. Wang hitting three after three, despite good defence and teamwork from High. The battle continued for the first two quarters, with High scoring a few now and then, and Newington powering ahead. By half time, the game was virtually over, with Newington leading by 40 points. Their remarkably well-drilled squad was just too good for High. Additional to their star played J. Wang, they were more accurate, determined, taller, stronger and quicker. However, High would not give up without a fight, and so fought back in the later stages of the game with good leadership skills from Captain Cameron Conway and skilful point guard Dustin Palana. Cameron tried hard in the key all game despite an obvious height disadvantage and Dustin controlled our offence well in spite of some excellent defence from Newington. It was a show of High spirit against the might of Newington. At the summer sports assembly Captain Cameron Conway asked for more support at our home games. Hope to see you all there supporting the most exciting sport this school has to offer. Francis Wong | 1st Grade player SECOND GRADE Saturday 6th November – High VS Kings (Round 4). After coming off a Scots win in Term 4, High Second Grade were looking to upset yet another GPS opponent, Newington, for the first match of the season. We were looking forward to continue our streak, and had the intention to win. After a solid routine of vigorous preparation during the holidays, High Second grade were confident and not intimidated by the taller Newington side. The first few minutes of the game saw a skilful and very fit Newington side power up, and start the game off by knocking off a few points. This was soon followed up by High, and solid performances from the team soon brought High closer to the Newington score, although due to many transition baskets early in the game, Newington held on to a solid point margin between High. This was carried on into the Second Quarter. Gradually the game became a very tight battle, matching great teamwork with solid high forwards—well built Kenny Huang and Roger Burrell—grabbing many rebounds and utilizing these to their advantage. However, the close-fought contest was not reflected in the scoreboard towards the end of the game, as many High members were failing to sink the ball, whereas the Newington side got basket after basket, being a stronger and taller team.
The final score ended up as 59-37 in Newington’s favour but full credit to the High Boys
for sticking with them and maintaining a positive attitude and giving great effort to the game.
