Year 12 Careers Interviews and Reports
This week Year 12 students received their reports and discussed their vocational options. Unfortunately, some boys still have not had appointments with Mr Watson to discuss their futures. I consider this preparation as vital as any other support mechanism helping boys to build motivation in their final year of schooling. I will be insisting on compliance with the policy.

High Talent
Rahul Badethalav (2004) won a place in the Bachelor of Accounting cooperative program at UTS. The scholarship value is $37,500 with 11 months full time work training with high profile employers. The pursuit of excellence can be rewarded well! I urge high achieving students to find out about opportunities that exist for financial assistance in the tertiary sector. Again, Mr Watson is the source for this information.

Education Week performances
Congratulations to Kathy Jackson and the High band that performed at Eastgardens last Friday. Leila Rock, marketing officer for the complex wrote, "the boys were fantastic and a real credit to their conductor Kathy and the school". The Music Committee might well plan to support more opportunities to present the school in such a positive way through public performances.

Cranbrook weekend
Early starts for football at Dangar fields did not detract from the quality of the games I saw. Second grade created numerous chances against a fit, skilful and determined Cranbrook side but were unable to finish. Our boys weathered the early storm in each half and then settled down to play quite enterprising football. Despite being scoreless, the game was an entertaining one with good skills on display from both sides. First grade was played at a pace that we have only seen in GPS competition for the last couple of years. Cranbrook was a tall side with speed on the flanks. I was pleased with the way our boys started to construct moves better with good communication. The defence at the back was very solid with Burak Akinci and Nicholas Roucek snuffing out opposition raids. Eddy Blaxell and Ed Curran had good understanding in the middle. High applied most of the pressure and Blaxell's goal was a deserved outcome. A hand ball penalty to Cranbrook was successfully taken, giving them more impetus and flattening our attack for a while. Phil Zhang played his best game for a long while to slot one home. Newcomer Shuttleworth was tentative in the first half marking a representative opponent but came into his own in the second half creating chances and using his speed. Mischa was fast and determined as usual. A two all draw would have indicated the quality of both sides but a late, well executed goal saw the home side snatch a victory.

At McKay, the 15As rugby faced a particularly tall Cranbrook outfit with a bit of pace out wide. I was most impressed with the discipline of our boys. They worked hard for territory, got themselves into position and scored tries through the forwards when in the zone to do so. Cranbrook used their speed to score a couple and the game was poised at 12-10 to High at half time. The team came out playing with great determination and the boys were rewarded with a try. They stretched their lead to 22-10 before a late charge from Cranbrook brought the margin to 5 points. Our boys had not beaten Cranbrook in two previous attempts and were rightly thrilled with their victory. Back at the Horden Field at Cranbrook, the home side were led out by a very large No.8 to the cheers of a large contingent of supporters. Though outweighed in the scrum, our boys held their ground most of the game. Cranbrook wheeled the scrum at every opportunity, allowing their speedy half to harass Pat McDonnell and spoil a lot of our ball. Huge line kicking by Cameron Conway and fierce rucking by Tom Mainprize were features of the game. Mark Carroll had another great game, scoring a good try and setting up Suren Wickramasinghe to score out wide. I thought our backline was gaining some combination and our forwards showed plenty of 'ticker' and rucked well throughout. One long rolling maul in the first half was also really good team work. With a couple of minutes to go the scores were locked and High received a penalty 15 metres away from Cranbrook's line adjacent to the posts. Inexplicably, Ian Kwok opted for a scrum. This sensational decision was probably prompted by a feeling that High were the better side, having a controversial charge down try scored against them, and deserved to win with a try not a kick. After a brave attempt, the game was drawn at 17-17. It was a good game to watch but terribly frustrating for the players and a nightmare for coaches.

(No answers were submitted by parents - Shame! - but I suppose I can give you an extension!)

Attendance information

A copy of each boy's attendance information is placed in his home directory on the computer network on a daily basis. If boys wish to avoid detentions, they should check this file (absences.txt), note unexplained absences and explain them. If there are any problems, see Mr Dowdell.
NOTE: If your copy of absences.txt is completely blank (no name, no other information), your home directory is full. Delete some files. A full directory will not be acceptable as a reason for unexplained absences.

Parents can receive a copy of their son's attendance information on a regular basis, by emailing Mr Dowdell, stating their son's name and Roll Class. Please indicate whether you would like the information emailed on a daily or weekly basis. The information supplied is most readable in a font such as Courier New.

• We would like to remind Year 12 to make the most of the revision program now in place. A new writing task is available at the beginning of every week and can be collected from the English staffroom. This is an excellent opportunity to revise Course content, strengthen writing skills and receive individualized feedback. If you are committed to improving your performance in English you will complete as many of these revision tasks as you can.
• There are currently a number of exciting creative writing and essay competitions available for students to enter. Several of these competitions have significant prizes attached to them. Further details and entry forms about the following competitions are available from English:

Debating

This year over 130 students have registered for debating, (with over 50 in year 7!) and we have already had 8 weeks of social debates in preparation for the 2005 GPS Debating Season (which runs from week 1-7 of term 3). This year the debating program has been expanded significantly to accommodate the large number of students and provide practical opportunities for students to gain experience in debating.

Coaching for all years started in week 5 of term 1 and we are very excited to welcome our first female coach, Julia Bowes, who has a wealth of debating experience, including being CHS and National Schools Debating representative. We also welcome old boys Tanvir Ahmed and Daniel Wodak as coaches; they both represented SBHS in the Firsts last year.

A huge congratulations to the Year 8 and year 9 teams who won their final of the Inaugural Eastside Competition held at The Scots College on 20/05/05. The Year 8 team of Chris Evans, Beau Greenslade, Christian Katsikaros and Stephen Garofano were undefeated throughout the 6 week competition. Simon Lui, Dominic Bowes, Zid Mancenido and Lucian Tan in Year 9 were victorious over a tough Sydney Girls team.

The Eastside Competition was created this year in response to the large number of junior debaters that are coming through the ranks. At present Scots, SCEGGS, SGHS and SBHS are in the competition with at least 3 other schools keen to join the competition in 2006.

Selections are currently underway across all years for the GPS and PDC (Premiers Debating Challenge). They are an integral part of selecting the best teams possible from a large number of talented and enthusiastic students. Please see your coach for details on selections.

Supporters Group (DSG) meets on the second Tuesday of each month during the school term to discuss issues relating to debating. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday June 10th at 6.30pm in the Staff Common room. All parents of debaters are invited to attend.

A 2005 Debating Season Calendar has been distributed to all students as well as emailed out. Please note these dates in your diary.

Macquarie University Parent Liaison Program 2005

The Parent Liaison Program aims to give parents and families of Year 12 students information regarding study at Macquarie University.

Information evenings led by the Vice-Chancellor will be held at Macquarie University on Tuesday 28 June and Wednesday 27 July 2005 from 6.00pm - 7.30pm. These sessions will provide information on admissions, the UAI, transition to university from high school and HECS-HELP and FEE-HELP university loan schemes.

Amendment to the Strategic Plan

Please find following amendments to the Strategic Plan. This process is for school community discussion.

As requested at the last School Council meeting, the following amendment has been prepared for the Strategic Plan.

THE STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS

In future years, the plan will include:

1. A statement of where the SBHS is positioned in the present day, in all aspects of its operations covering issues and shortfalls to be addressed
2. A vision of where the SBHS wants to be positioned in the future in all aspects of its operations and endeavours
3. A statement of its mission, values, objectives and strategies (including partnerships and communications), tactics and methods to realise its vision
4. Plans of action detailing tasks, completion dates and responsibilities for individuals and committees to make the vision a reality.

These plans and processes will include:

5. An organisational plan covering roles, responsibilities and training
6. A financial plan covering all sources of revenue, costs of operation, capital works, reserves and cash flow for review against budgets
7. A process to allow the School Council as the SBHS executive and policy making body, to:
   
   1. review progress each month and to subsequently take corrective action and
   2. amend the plan as dictated by changing circumstances.
8. A process to pro-actively and forthrightly seek the views of teachers, students, parents, Old Boys and patrons during the preparation of the strategic plan, and to keep all parties informed of progress each month and to pro-actively seek their feedback.
9. A process to pro-actively seek information on emerging trends in the areas of politics, Department of Education, family, training, business, universities, colleges, social, community, spiritual and the military that will have an impact on the way in which the school educates and trains boys for their roles as men in our society
10. A process to allow for the SBHS Council to invite commercial training organisations focused on teenage education to present their services to the School for consideration, and to invite respected professionals in the field of education to review the operation of the School and to make recommendations on improvement for consideration.
11. A process to allow for the appointment of a Strategic Planning Committee from the School Council under the executive management of the Principal to undertake the work required.
12. A process to allow for dispute resolution and mediation by a respected professional in the field on major issues of contention between members of the School Family including committees, supporting organisations, individuals and with the executive.

German 'Selingua Columns' Competition Final 2005

Congratulations to the following students for their excellent performance in the Selingua Columns competition.

A mix of German knowledge, strategy and speed were required to win in this Computer "Tetris" style game. Speed and Strategy may have resulted in a score up to 7500.

To get 8000 plus, you needed to know your German vocabulary well.

Those with an 8000 plus scores have demonstrated their excellence in matching German words with their English Translation.

From the Office: Reminder to Parents

Change of Address
If you have recently changed your address or have changed your employment the school needs to know.

There have been a number of occasions when Administration have had difficulty contacting parents because of change of workplace. This is extremely important in a case of emergency. If parents are going to be out of the country for any length of time the Principal needs to know this information as well.

Please ask your son to obtain a change of details form from the Main Office and also change forms for travel when changing your address

Letters Re Absence/Lateness/Early Leave
When your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of explanation signed by parent or guardian. If your son is going to be late for school a note is also required.

If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Beringer, Mr Dowdell or Mr Prorellis before 8.55am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each letter should be signed by parent or guardian with the name date and roll class of your son printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up the red leave pass from the Main Office before he leaves the school.

Leave
If you require leave for your son please, apply in writing and address your application to the Principal, Dr Jaggar, stating the reason and length of time of the leave. Your son must then present this application to Dr Jaggar for permission for the leave. Please remember to apply before the leave and not after.

Remember at all times the Principal must approve all leave applications.

Volleyball Report #2

High Vs Newington Second Grade The High second grade team entered the match against Newington College determined to win in straight sets. The pre-game talk by captain Sam Chhor rallied the team and boosted much needed confidence, as for many second graders, it was only their second match ever.

Upon stepping onto the court, High immediately took a streak of quick points with exceptional passing and hitting from Ping Lu and Stephen Duong.

This momentum, only to be slightly interrupted by several mistakes on the High side, was continued with an 8 point win streak due to Ed's blinding serves and Sam's strong spikes. This streak not only won critical points but also shattered the Newington side's confidence.

The end of the first set saw the High team comfortably taking it 25 - 9. The team talk once again addressed the mistakes that the High team were encountering in an attempt to minimize the points conceded.

Strong passing and hitting by both David's and the uncanny knack of High's centre blockers, Henry Dang and Balraj, to place the ball where it was least expected carried High through to win the match 3 sets to none; 25-9, 25-14, 25-15.

Overall, the match against Newington was a very important match to High in terms of developing teamwork and gaining match experience, two very valuable skills which will bear results in the future.
