From the Principal
Two sports afternoons
Naturally there were some teething problems as we attempted to get this initiative off the ground.
However, within a short period of time we expect this major change to operate quite smoothly. Boys
will have to get used to the fact that there are no more Wednesday morning assemblies.
Communications about sports arrangements, venues and commitments will be accessible via five main
sources: mango sheet, noticeboards, school website and links, word of mouth and the student
internal website. Mr Dowdell intends to clone sections on the internal website and make them
accessible to students on the R drive. Parents of Years 7 & 8 will be affected most by the new
arrangements as some students will be training off campus on Thursdays. Once staff get used to
Thursday afternoon arrangements, more effective training for boys will result. Please bear with us
while we get used to the new arrangements.
Ascham Proposal
Just before Christmas I felt it necessary to withdraw from negotiations with the representatives
from Ascham School. I sent the following letter on December 23, 2003.
Mr. J. Charrington
Chairman
Ascham School Foundation
Dear John,
It is with great regret that I write to you withdrawing my support for an agreement between
Ascham School Council and Sydney High Foundation Inc. in respect of shared usage of the
Outterside Centre.
I no longer believe that it is in the best interests of our two schools for me to be involved in
any further negotiations.
The reasons for my revised position are:
- Controversy surrounding a proposed agreement between our two organisations has spread beyond
our school communities. At state level both The Federation of Parents and Citizens Associations
of New South Wales and the NSW Teachers Federation are now involved. The Department of Education
and Training has stated its opposition to the proposed agreement. The possible arrangement is
being viewed symbolically in terms of the state debate between private and public education. I do
not wish my actions to fuel the fire of that debate.
- I am concerned that should an agreement between the Sydney High Foundation and Ascham School
be reached, these representative bodies will use their influence to prevent its implementation.
At the very least a negative campaign against an agreement will cause a level of embarrassment
and stress to both our school communities such that a tenable agreement between us might become
impossible.
- The focus of attention has shifted from the agreement itself to the person at High who
supports the agreement -the Principal. I have been painted as the sole proposer of such an
agreement, against the wishes of my school community. In my judgment, a campaign of opposition to
an agreement on ideological grounds will lead to negative consequences for educational programs
in place or soon to be implemented at Sydney Boys High.
- The Sydney High Foundation is divided on the issue and I have been persuaded that it is not
in the best interests of the school if the Principal's vote is the deciding one.
I have greatly appreciated the professional manner in which your organisation has conducted
negotiations. I consider that a great opportunity has been lost.
Yours sincerely
Kim Jaggar
My changed position was a personal decision and did not purport to represent the position of the
Sydney High Foundation Inc.
Saturday Sport 30/1/04
At the Sydney Grammar School Regatta, crews tested each other for the first time in GPS racing
mode. Benchmark performances were established. Once again it was Shore leading the way with very
stylish crews who powered away from the field. A cross wind over the starboard quarter gave the
boats a push along but made coxswains keep alert for sideways drift. The Year 8 5th and 6th quads
had good rows, being 3rd overall on times. The first VIII is currently 6.8% off the pace; the
second VIII is at 7%. The row of the morning was by the 1st Year 10 VIII. Their time was the 4th
fastest of the 8 crews competing, but the margin off the pace was 1.6% - very competitive indeed!
Well done to all boys who competed in the regatta.
First grade basketball was against Joeys. They had a couple of very useful players and a very
tall centre who dominated the rebounds. Our team was under strength but very willing. The boys
fought back to within 8 points in the third quarter. Unfortunately, we failed to capitalise on
our fast breaks and the boys tired towards the end of the game, allowing Joeys to extend their
lead. It was an enjoyable game. High showed that they could defend well. Now we need to lift our
shooting percentages and hussle for more turnovers. At Shore, the first and second XI teams were
batting. The firsts were sent in on a greenish pitch with high humidity in the morning. The ball
swung enough to make runs hard to come by. At lunch we were 3 for 71. They had a good young leg
spinner who mesmerised our boys after lunch and wickets tumbled cheaply. Matt Shiner hit a
stylish 41 only to lose his wicket with a good fifty in sight. The tail-enders took the long
handle to the Shore spinners, with an entertaining partnership of 37 for the last wicket. They
showed how to play spin - wait and whack or use your feet to get to the pitch of the ball and
make a full toss of it or at least kill the spin. The total was never enough. The pitch flattened
out in the afternoon sun and Shore passed our total for the loss of five wickets. Our boys will
have to focus and dig deep next week to salvage a draw.
Swimming Carnival Success
Congratulations to Mr Ockert (MIC Swimming) for his organisation of the school Swimming Carnival.
The rain stayed away, the competition was spirited and the administration of the event most
efficient. More than 60% of the students attended - a strong show of support for the event. I
urge more boys to compete next year and earn a valuable Student Award Scheme category. Tom
Miller, our school captain, re-wrote the senior record book at the carnival, breaking records in
four events - one set in 1967! Tom smashed the 50 metres (25.1), the 100 metres (55), the 200
metres (2m05sec) and the 100 fly (1m.02secs). What a great way to finish off six years of school
carnivals!
The GPS relay team: Tom Miller, Andrew Reis, Ellis Louie and Barry Dubovsky, stunned the crowd
with a very strong second place - our best effort for many years.
New Appointments
I am pleased to announce that Mr Robert Devlin has taken on the role of MIC Athletics, replacing
Mr Tiedgen who has transferred to Riverside Girls. Mr Andrew Fuller replaces Mr Jordan in
mathematics. Ms Betsy Berger has accepted the role of Year Adviser for Year 11.
Premier's Awards
At the ceremony on Tuesday afternoon at the Darling Harbour Convention Centre, the Premier shook
hands with 801 HSC students who scored 90 or more in 10 units. These students represented 1.2% of
the 2003 candidature of 65,311. 54% of the awards were earned in state schools. Heavily
represented schools were: James Ruse Agricultural (72), North Sydney Girls (39), Baulkham Hills
(38) North Sydney Boys (35), Sydney Grammar (35) Sydney Boys (26), Sydney Girls (26) PLC (26)
Abbotsleigh (22) St George Girls (18), Barker College (18) Hornsby Girls (16) Fort Street (14)
Moriah College (13) and Sydney Technical High School (12). The top ten schools listed here earned
42% of the awards.

National Meningococcal C Vaccination Program
Our school is participating in this important vaccination program which will ensure that all school
children in Australia, who have parental or caregiver consent, are vaccinated against the disease.
A team of specially trained registered nurses will be visiting our school on Monday 16th and
Tuesday 17th February to administer the vaccine.
This week all boys have been issued with a Parent Information Kit which contains full
details of the program and a Consent Form. [If your son has not received a Kit he should ask for
one at the Main Office].
If you would like your son to be vaccinated against the Meningococcal C disease you must
complete the Consent Form in the kit and return it to the school by Thursday 12th February.
Collection boxes for the completed forms will be located at the Main Office.
NSW Health has prepared a Fact Sheet about the program in ten community languages. If you would
like a copy of one of these or if you have a query about the program, please contact Mr
Beringer.

A message from the Anti Racist Officer
Welcome back to school to all students and a warm welcome to new Year 7 students and their parents.
This is just a reminder to all members of the Sydney High family that racism has no place at Sydney
Boys High School. In recent years I have had very few complaints about racist behaviour in the
school and I will endeavour to make sure that this continues in the future.
If any member of the school family believes they have been discriminated against on the basis of
their race or have been racially abused they should immediately contact Steve Codey in the Social
Science Staffroom.
All correspondence is treated confidentially and immediate action will be taken to overcome the
problem or concern.

From PDHPE
Congratulations to Mr Ockert for a successful swimming carnival. Thank you to the staff and
students for their efforts in making the carnival run as smoothly as it did.
I would like to especially thank Mr Ryan for his invaluable input into the new system we tried
this year. The informal feedback I received on the day was very positive. In an effort to improve
the system for next year, if anyone has any feedback on the carnival organisation would they
please put their thoughts down on paper and place it in my pigeon hole by next Friday 13th Feb.
Many thanks.

Reminder to Parents
CHANGE OF ADDRESS
If you have recently changed your address the school needs to know. Please ask your son to obtain
a change of address form from the Main Office and also change forms for travel. Your son's travel
passes will be affected if he does not have the correct address. Failure to complete these forms
may result in your son not having a travel pass.
LETTERS RE ABSENCE/LATENESS/EARLY LEAVE.
When your son returns to school from being absent he is required to provide a letter of
explanation signed by parent or caregiver. If your son is going to be late for school a note is
also required.
If your son has an early leave note he is required to have his note signed by either Mr Beringer,
Mr Dowdell or Mr Ambler before 8:55 am and handed in to the Main Office immediately after. Each
letter should be signed by parent or guardian with the name date and roll class of your son
printed clearly. Your son needs to pick up the red leave pass from the Main Office before he
leaves the school.
