High Talent

Well done to our Water Polo team who finished Runner-up to the powerful Kirrawee High in the Dave Woods Shield Sydney East Final this week. This is our best CHS Water Polo result since I have been at High. Congratulations to Jamond Tan (9T), Jiazi Chen (9T), Brooks Feng (9S), Mark Yan (9F), Anay Gautam (8R). Oliver Yin (9T), Jamie Jin (9S), Jack Francis (8T), Nicholas Peakall (8E), Kester Jan (8S) and Ryan Chai (8S). Well done also to Jake Rowlands (Head coach).

Warning re Wearing Correct Uniform

Due to the large number of students who are forgetting to pack items of their school uniform on their non-sport days, the school is considering a change in the uniform policy. Allowing the students to wear their sports uniform to school when they have PDHPE practical lessons first period or before school training, has been a privilege the school allowed for the convenience of students. However, given the ongoing patterns of students forgetting to pack items of clothing such as their shoes, shorts, socks and tie, it may be necessary for the uniform policy to be changed. All students in Years 7-11 have the next four weeks to demonstrate that they can wear their sports uniform in the morning for physical activities to start the day, without forgetting items of their school uniform to change into. If students are not able to demonstrate this then the uniform policy will be changed, where all students will be required to wear the full school uniform both to and from school on their non-sport days. This change would just bring High into alignment with all the GPS and CAS schools who insist on students wearing school uniform to and from school. The one sentence version: If you want to keep your privileges, show respect, dedication and integrity when getting dressed in the morning.

Scholarships Offered at High

SBHS offers only two scholarships/bursaries – the Phillip Day Memorial Scholarship and the Sir Roden and Lady Cutler Foundation Scholarship. All enrolled or enrolling students are eligible to apply for the Phillip Day Memorial Scholarship. It is a one-year credit on the school account for $1,750. The Selection Criteria covers talented boys in an academic area or a co-curricular endeavour. Good all-rounders qualify as do students with special needs – financial or otherwise. There are many boys in the school who would make good candidates for this award. I urge them to take the trouble to download and complete the application form. The Sir Roden and Lady Cutler Foundation Inc Scholarship is a two-year award with a credit at the school account for $1,500 for each Year – 11 and 12. Only boys enrolled or enrolling in Year 11 are eligible to apply. The criteria for this scholarship are different. It has an emphasis on a prior record of service to others, to the school and / or the community. Boys with initiative, compassion, a record of school or community service and leadership skills, are invited to apply.

Look for the details on the school community website and select Scholarships from the navigation bar. Do not assume that you are not worthy or eligible. Applications close on Thursday 30 November.

Sentence Conscious Pedagogy:
Writing Summaries – What Method?

Students need to know the purpose, the audience and the format for the summary. Summary Sentence – Coherent sentence identifying the main idea of a text. The Single Paragraph Blueprint [see HN 11.8.23]. Students use this method to identify supporting details, generate a topic sentence, select and sequence supporting details, write the details as notes and generate a concluding statement. The Multiple Paragraph Blueprint - To create coherent, thesis-driven multiple-paragraph compositions, students need abilities to distinguish among general, specific and thesis statements; to generate a thesis statement that conveys the main theme of the composition and incorporate it into the introduction and conclusion; and to provide transitions between paragraphs.
