In the EBE Plan Your Own Business Enterprise Competition, Aiden McManus (10R), Brannavan Prabaharan (10R) and Dimitri Tsovolos (10T), claimed 2nd place in NSW for their business idea of glass solar panels. Well done, boys! Summer Sport Co-payments: Term 4The rolls for summer sports and activities have now been finalised. In many activities co-payments are levied for the season – in this case for Term 4 2023 and Term 1, 2024. Other sports have a policy of fixing co-payments on a term-by-term basis. In either case, invoices have now been posted. For Years 7-10 this means that the summer invoice will be included on individual Clearance Forms. These forms will need to be cleared prior to boys receiving their reports. The base co-payment for sport for this summer season is $190 for 2023-24. Higher charges are levied by individual sports as a result of resolutions passed by the Incorporated Associations or P & C Support Groups / Parent Committees responsible for supporting particular sports. Year 11 boys have been invoiced for Term 4 or their full summer sport, too. Parents would not have had these charges on the Cl for their sons prior to them receiving their reports. It would help the MICs for these sports greatly if families could pay for their sports in the next ten days or so. Children’s Week 21-29 OctoberCoinciding with Universal Children’s Day, Children’s Week celebrates the right of children to enjoy childhood. It is a time for children to demonstrate their skills and abilities and to have fun. The theme for 2023 is ‘children have the right to relax, play and join in a wide range of leisure activities. Parents are urged to encourage their children, particularly in the Junior School (Years 7-9), to engage deeply in the co-curricular offerings of our school. Have a go, make new friends and enjoy the organised activities. In World Mental Health month, it behoves us to reconsider how well our students are doing psychologically. A 2022 Youth Survey of 18000 15-18 year olds revealed that 29% of the respondents reported feeling psychological stress. Activities with others relieves our stress. In selective schools where expectations and pressure to succeed academically can be overwhelming, it is particularly important to have enjoyable downtime. Students are urged to ask peers, teachers and counsellors for help if they are not OK and need assistance. Sentence Conscious Pedagogy: Using quotations.
Quotations from text can strengthen argumentative essays. Cite evidence from text to support
claims and quote the text they are relying on (attribution). Students
often quote without any context, introduction or attribution. They
need to be judicious about selecting the text they’ll quote. They need to know when and how to
incorporate that text smoothly into their own writing. Whose words are they? What does the
quotation mean? How does the quotation relate to their own text? Eg Convert the text they want to
quote into note form, using key words and phrases. A pithy phrase, paraphrasing text, can work
well. Use when the author of the text has said something particularly noteworthy or has worded an
observation in a striking way. Use IQE - introduction, quotation, explanation. X
states “…According to Y…As the author puts it”… Paraphrasing sentence after the quote – In other
words, X is saying… Therefore, according to the author…Y’s point is….Z’s main argument is… |
