High Notes, Vol 23 No 26, August 26 2022From the PrincipalFirstly, I’m very pleased to say that there are a large number of individual feats to report on this week. High TalentCongratulations to Oscar Shi (10S) for his outstanding results in the 2022 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in London this week. Oscar won the individual Cadet U17 Men’s Sabre, defeating his British opponent 15-12 in the final bout. In doing so, he won the first ever gold medal in the men's sabre by the Australian Team in the Commonwealth Fencing Championship. Furthermore, in the team division he won the bronze medal in both the Men's Junior U20 Sabre Championship and Men's Cadet U17 Sabre Championship Teams. Well done Oscar on such an incredible and historic achievement! In other fencing news, Henry Lin (10S) came equal 3rd with the bronze medal in the NSWSFL U16 Foil Individual Competition held at Riverview last week. Well done Henry on a great result! Isaac Ayoubi (12F) continues to excel in basketball. This week he competed in the NSW All Schools team, completing an undefeated run to win gold at Nationals. He has also been selected as part of the All Australian team. Congratulations Isaac on your continued success! This week Jiazi Chen (8T) had the honour of being accepted into the State Wind Band for 2022, gathering together in Sydney under the direction of professional conductors. The program culminates with two performances in the Sydney Opera House at both the NSW State Festival of Instrumental Music and In Concert. We look forward to hearing more about your experience Jiazi. Meanwhile, debating continues to excel in our school. Jerald Joseph (12E) and Cosmo Song (12E) were selected as part of the GPS Representative Debating squad, with Archie Wolifson (12R), Timothy Hanna (12R) and Abrar Chowdhury (11F) selected in the combined CHS team. Well done to all of you on your achievements and we wish you all the best in the upcoming competitions. Additionally, Totoro Nakagawa-Lagisz (8R) entered a student poster competition in the Congress of the European Society for Evolutionary Biology against approximately 400 international PhD students and was selected as a finalist. He was awarded a Special Outstanding Poster Award for the Youngest Presenter. Congratulations Totoro and I’m sure we’ll be seeing more great things from you in the years to come! Wear it Purple DayOutside of all these incredible individual achievements, this week the Equality Team coordinated our Wear it Purple Day events for Friday. As an annual part of our school calendar, this is a day to reinforce the importance that all members of our school community and society at large always feel safe and can be proud of who they are. At High we will continue creating a supportive environment for LGBTQIA+ people both at school and outside through our words and actions. This Friday is a time for us to celebrate society’s progress in this area and to continue reinforcing the powerful message of showing compassion for our fellow citizens. Conduct on Public Transport
On this note, I’d like to remind students to continue this notion of compassion and respect when
in public. It’s essential that we’re always mindful of those around us, whether giving up our
seat for others on public transport, providing time and space for fellow passengers to move
freely, keeping noise to a minimum to not disturb others, and being considerate of the things
being said that others may not want to overhear. At this time, mask wearing is also a way to show
compassion for others to help stop the spread of COVID. I ask all students to follow these
principles at all times to demonstrate the values we stand for as a part of Sydney High. |
