From the Principal

Valè Robert ‘Bob’ Outterside AO

The school community was saddened this week to hear of the passing of Bob Outterside, former Principal of Sydney High from 1977-91. Bob commenced his days in the school as a Mathematics teacher spanning 1958-60, during which he also played rugby at a club, State and national level, earning two test caps playing for Australia in 1959.

On returning as Principal of the school in 1977, Bob brought a wealth of experience as an educational leader and sportsman to strengthen High’s scholar-sportsman ethos. His services to education and the community led to him being appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1990.

A number of current staff worked with Bob in his days as Principal and he is always spoken of fondly. His legacy as a highly respected educator and leader is well known across the school and will continue to be felt in the years to come.

While leading the school, Bob drove the concept of the ̽»¨ÊÓƵ Foundation, established in his time as Principal. To this day, his name continues to be heard on a regular basis across the community, with our Abbotsford boatsheds - the Outterside Centre - named in honour of him.

In order for the school to celebrate Bob’s incredible life and contributions to the High community, we will be holding a commemoration service in The Great Hall later this term. Details will be provided in due course.

High Talent

In sporting news, the final fixture of the NSW Schools’ Fencing League - Foil Team Premiership was held last weekend. Our U19 Foil Team of Dean Johnsun (10F), Alvin Liu (12S), Jayden Chu (11M), Daniel Low (12T), Henry, Lin (10S) and James Pullinger (10T) were undefeated in their matches and won the gold in their age category. Our U14 Foil Team of Benjamin Pham (8R), Lyndon Chow (8E), Pranav Gupta (9M), Raphael Xiao (8S) and George Mermelas (8F) finished with silver. Well done to all the boys on a fantastic achievement!

Community Services BBQ

On Monday this week the Community Services Committee organised their first BBQ since Covid began, with the smell of cooked sausages wafting across the school grounds and enticing a long line of eager boys to queue for a taste. The team’s effort raised $1,690 for Headspace, while promoting the importance of mental health services to the boys. Well done to the CSC on your efforts for such an important cause!

Prefects Elect 2023

In other news, this week we saw a number of Year 11 students proudly sporting their new prefect ties. Congratulations to our Prefect Interns of: Austin Ah-Koon, Sumanth Bodidi, Octavio Carbajal Zapata, Samuel Choi, Abrar Chowdhury, Liam Fiene, Harrison Francis, Edward Ly, James Matthews, Mohammad Medlej, Subhan Mustafa, Hikun Nguyen, William Nguyen, Isaia Park, Benjamin Pirom, Rachit Saini, Aditya Sharma, Jason Sung, Allan Tan, Moshi Tao, James Wachsmann, Tony Wang, Ryan Woo, Jaden Yi, Samuel Yun and Tommy Zhang, who will be led by the 2023 leadership team of Sean Lim (School Captain), Matthew Lam (Vice Captain) and Landrie Zuo (Senior Prefect). We look forward to seeing you thrive as outstanding role models, inspiring students of all ages in the year ahead.

This weekend the Prefect Interns will be leading the way in cheering our sporting teams on for the final round of the GPS winter season against Grammar. It would be fantastic to see as many boys as possible there to support the 1st and 2nd teams as they look to wind up the winter competition (and in many cases their school sporting careers) on a high.
