High Talent
Congratulations to our GPS swimming team on their results this season. In the overall point score, our senior squad finished 6th, our juniors third and our intermediate squad, second. The High team came third in the GPS overall – a very respectable result. At the final GPS Carnival, great individual results came from Christian Haddo (100 points) and James Luo (96 points). Kazuo Nakamura and Max Menzel won individual events and two of our relay teams were successful. Thank you to Mr Loizou for his organisation of the season and management of the team. Congratulations to Lucas Wong on his 100/200 sprint double at the invitational athletics carnival last Saturday. Marcel Chew ran well to win the U13 200m. Luke Schofield ran an impressive 3000m time

High Spirit
This week the sportsmanship shown by our first VIII in congratulating other crews after the race at the Head of the River was the subject of a very positive letter from an Australian representative rower and Joeys Old Boy. He writes: “Your young men should be congratulated from the highest level…Your young men are winners on the day. No, they didn’t win the race but they won the respect of every Joeys parent that saw them walk through as we all knew why they had come over. They had their heads held very high. Congratulations to you and those fine young men. You have developed some real champions of sport. It didn’t go unnoticed as you can see”.

Weighing Down in Rugby
Lighter weight students who love rugby but are a bit on the small side should be heartened by the GPS decision to allow boys who are 16 to play down in the 15s if they meet the weight restriction and for 17 year olds to play in 16s. The dispensation is designed to keep more boys playing rugby as they get older.

Annual School Report
The hard copy of the Annual School Report has been distributed. The document has many contributors. I would like to thank you all for your efforts. Ms Lynne Williams was again the editor and did the bulk of the layout and composition of the ASR. On your behalf I thank her for her professionalism, persistence and patience. The ASR is not a document to publish and forget. It is an expression of what we have done, are doing and want to do this year. I will use it as a blueprint supporting the Management Plan for 2014. The Executive will be analysing data from various sections of the report and refining our practice or responding to suggestions as appropriate. I commend the report to you. National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)
In May, NAPLAN tests will be held nationally for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The results of these tests provide information to schools about what each student can do and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child’s level of achievement, reported against the national standard. On Tuesday, May 13, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) will be held, along with Writing. This year’s writing will be a single common task requiring a response to either a persuasive or narrative writing prompt. Additional information about NAPLAN can be found at .

Communicate to Prevent Cyber Bullying
Last Friday, March 21 was the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. Cyber bullying causes distress and can lead to loneliness, depression and suicide. For parents, communication is as important as setting boundaries. To prevent cyber bullying parents are encouraged to: learn about what is happening in their children’s lives and discuss issues that arise; talk to their children about what they are doing online and actively monitor their internet use; reinforce family values and encourage their children to match their offline values with their online behaviour; and keep up to date with programs and apps and use them with their children.

Next week High is having a Cyber Awareness Week with activities across the school designed to raise awareness about how students interact with technology at all levels. I encourage parents to attend the Cyber Awareness Parents Meeting in the Great Hall from 6:30pm.

Lak Saviya/Harmony Day BBQ

On the 25th of March 2014, Sydney Boys High School embraced multiculturalism and diversity through a BBQ-Mufti day by raising $2257.20 for the Lak Saviya Foundation.  All the proceeds go to KRMV, our sister school in Sri Lanka, which was devastated in the 2004 tsunami. The event also celebrated Harmony Day, raising awareness for multiculturalism in Australia.  Naturally, the mufti was themed, with students urged to wear either cultural or orange clothing in support of these two causes. The annual basketball match between SBHS 1st XI vs SBHS 1st VIII also took place during lunch, which also celebrated diversity within our school. The Rowers were victors of the controversial match, taking the title for yet another year.  A big thank you goes to all involved, as none of this would have been possible without their help:  Mr Phillipson, the CSC and all the helpers of the Mufti collection and BBQ for their hard work during the day.

The City of Sydney aims to improve road safety with a workshop for supervisors of learner drivers.

DONATION THANKS
Our Library would like to thank Mrs Kwan Sin Wong - mother of Lingyu in Year 8 - for her thoughtfulness in donating 10 fabulous books to our Library.  If you are wondering if we accept donations – we love them.  Popular paperbacks get ruined easily.  We just ask that the books are less than 10 years old. All of the books in our workroom at the moment are donations as we had a large and quite new books bequest last year. Young adult literature is particularly welcome. Apologies are due to Mrs Christine Rahardja – mother of Kinzey in Year 8 - who donated a box full of books over a month ago and who was not acknowledged at the time.

The Ethics Teamwork Project

The following students have been successful in their applications to participate in an exciting series of three half days workshops to develop their skills and understanding of collaborative learning and ethical motivation.

Year 8: Dev Lalwani, Abhijot Singh, Marcus Cameron, Lachlan Fong, Brian Nguyenm, Symeon Zeigler.

Year 9:Hugh Barley, Connor Fisher, Hin Huang, Jason Huo, Jack Karnaghan, Andrew  R Li, Dennis Pan, Louis Saunders, Dharmesh Sharma, and Jason Yang Zhang.

The workshops will be facilitated by Dr Andrew Crosbie, who has previously assisted us with preparation for Philosothon. The first meeting is Wednesday 2nd April to be followed by 2 more sessions over the coming weeks.

On July 30, 8 of these students will be putting the skills gained during this experience to use by working with 8 students from each of the following schools: St George Girls High, Sydney Girls High and Sydney Technical High in a day of creative collaboration on an ethical theme. 32 students will be working in small groups, to solve hypothetical problems and in the afternoon they’ll have a chance to present their perspectives and insights. The day is non-competitive and the aim is the sharing of ideas in a relaxed atmosphere, and a chance for the students to enjoy each other’s company.

We are all very grateful for Dr Jaggar’s support of this initiative and for our Deputy Mr Con Barris’ enthusiasm and commitment to making it happen.

‘Bring Your Own Device’ Year 9 Review Survey

Sydney Boys High School introduced a ‘Bring Your Own Device’ program in 2014. Year 9 students are expected to bring a device of their own to school each day; Years 10 – 12 have the option of bringing a device of their own instead of their laptop issued under the former Digital Education Revolution scheme.

We are now evaluating the effectiveness of the scheme so far, particularly the way communication was handled as to:

1. why BYOD is necessary and important
2. how you could obtain an appropriate device.

and how you responded to this. Additional space is provided at the end for other comments you may have.

Music Notes

MUSIC COMMITTEE MEETING
Thanking all parents who attended the music committee meeting on Tuesday evening (18th of March). A list of agendas that were discussed in the meeting included the Music Camp BBQ and fundraising especially for the upcoming 2015 USA music tour.

ANNUAL MUSIC CAMP 2014
Music Camp will be on Wednesday 28th May - Friday 30th May @ Naamaroo Uniting Venues. Camp forms have been handed out this week. Forms will be placed outside the music staffroom. Please remember to also complete the online form (Online form instructions on last page). Payments and forms must be completed by Wednesday 2nd of April (Term 1 Week 10).

MUSIC INSTRUMENTS ON LOAN
Students who are borrowing music instruments from the school are to see Ms Kim ASAP with their instrument(s)!

BIG NIGHT OUT
The SBHS Big Night Out event will be on Saturday 29th of March commencing at 5pm. Intermediate and Senior Stage bands including the Saxophone Ensemble will be performing at this event. All parents, friends and family are welcome to come along to this eventful evening!

MARCHING BAND
All students in Junior & Intermediate Concert/Stage Bands, Senior Concert/Stage Bands and the Saxophone Ensemble must attend Marching Band rehearsals as there are only 3 weeks left till the end of Term 1.

Basketball: Shootin' Hoops

RESULTS

This season of basketball for Sydney Boys has been an absolute thriller. First grade smashing the championship (undefeated) with an incredible 520 points. What is more impressive however is that the whole program is doing well. The Old Boy coaches on the junior and lower grade sides are the reason that we are successful.

But while being the being the champions takes hard work, determination, and faith, it really takes heart and soul to stay in the game when you haven’t won a game all season.  The 14As (our Year 8 side) will need the school’s support going forward. Michael Jordan didn’t get picked for his college basketball team when selection time came. He went home, and practised.  Be like Michael and never give up.

To all the coaches and people behind the scenes that made this season possible, from all the players and parents, thank you.  Without you we couldn’t experience the feeling you get from playing in a High basketball team.

Have fun over the holidays and try getting some one-on-one going with your mates.

SBHS/SGHS Junior Dance 2014

March 8 2014

Dear Parents and Guardians

The annual Junior Dance for students who are currently enrolled in Years 7, 8 and 9 at both Sydney Girls High School and Sydney Boys High School will be held at SGHS in the Multi Purpose Hall on Monday April 7th, commencing at 6pm and finishing promptly at 9pm.

The dance is fully supervised by staff from both schools. Music will be supplied by Mobydisc, which also will provide atmospheric lighting and strobe effects.

The SGHS Prefects will award prizes for Best Dressed and Most Creative and will also judge a Dance-off, awarding prizes for best performances.

The SRC at SGHS are responsible for selling tickets. Cost is $10 per ticket.

Soft drinks are available for sale on the night. Water is available from bubblers outside the MPH.

Proceeds from the dance, after costs have been taken out, will go to the SGHS's Stewart House charity.

Parents are asked to be sure to arrive to collect their daughters/sons promptly at 9pm.
It is not anticipated that any staff would be required to wait around after the dance for any student to be collected.

Students whose families expect they will be driven home by a friend's parent MUST have the relevant section on this Permission Note properly filled in.

Parent Information Evening- Cyber Awareness- Monday Night

A reminder that an information evening for parents and carers on Cyber Awareness is to be held this coming Monday 31st March at 6.30 – 7.30pm in the Great Hall.

The evening includes a presentation from Psychologist Jocelyn Brewer and Senior Constable Craig Parkinson, Crime Prevention Officer Surry Hills Local Area Command. Jocelyn Brewer will speak to: How much is too much? Screen time and digital nutrition.  Senior Constable Craig Parkinson will discuss legal ramifications of the internet and mobile phone technology for young people.  SBHS School Counsellor, Estelle Harman will be in attendance to talk to parents about individual concerns.
