Rowing Assembly "Special guests, Karl Kruszelnicki and Joshua Scharfegger (SHS2005), crews representing High, coaches, parents, teachers, students; welcome to our 2014 rowing assembly. It is great to welcome back two members of the 2005 VIII which rowed 6.06 for a fourth place at the Head of the River – our best result for more than 15 years. Unusually, we gather this year on a Wednesday morning because the CHS Championships are being held at SIRC tomorrow and Friday, followed by the GPS Head of the River on Saturday. High and SGHS are co-hosting the CHS event. We expect to win again the Peter Bond Cup for Champion Boys School in the points score. We will have a close contest with SGHS to retain our Rowing Association Trophy for Highest Points Score School Overall. We dedicate this assembly to introduce and honour those crews who will compete for High and themselves at the CHS and Head of the River. "The Head of the River is a very important event for our school because of its long tradition, its profile in the Sydney sports calendar and its high exposure in the wider community. We have been in the GPS competition since 1906 and rowing is still our most successful sport with 8 wins. The boys in our crews have done a great deal of training to reach this day. Many of them have a hectic schedule ahead with three races and finals ahead of the Head of the River. "I want to thank Julie Blomberg again for her work as MIC rowing. It was another very testing year with equipment and management challenges. Thank you to Beryl Crockford for her oversight of the rowing program as Head Coach. It was back to the future as Simon Hoadley returned to mentor the first VIII. Thank you to Pravin Radhakrishnan who helped with our 2nd VIII, Isaac Eveleigh with the 1st IV and Gareth Deacon and Alan Low with the second IV. I’m pleased to see that we are boating in more races at the Head of the River this year. In the Junior Shed, Hayden Schilling and Koren Fang have guided the quads well. "As always, the rowing program relied heavily on its parental input this year to make a hectic schedule doable. Whether as cooks, stall holders, drivers, dormitory supervisors, financiers or fund raisers, they really give a lot for their sons. Thank you to the Rowing Committee, particularly: George and Noi Comninos, Jenny Nixon, Sylvia Peng, Diana Sutherland, Carol Davis, Hong Zhou, Zixiu Guo, Kate Sands, Tracy Whittaker, Ron Trent and Tevita Katafano. Without your great efforts and those of other parents who helped out we could never deliver the high quality rowing program that we do. "In the last decade in particular there has been an accelerating trend towards more professionalism in sport. Parents expect higher standard coaching for their children at all levels. Schools have more specialist coaches employed now than ever before. The equipment is better and the understanding of training and nutrition is highly refined. In most sports the difference between amateurs and professionals is mainly to be found in superior consistency. Professionals work towards the complete eradication of error during their performances. They train very hard on the simple things and always strive to perform them to perfection. Let’s hope as our new sports policy is embedded we can achieve higher quality training sessions in preparation for competition. "During the last 15 years, crews at High have averaged 6m24sec for the 2000m journey at the Head of the River. When they are goal setting. I know every boy in every crew at the Head of the River will strain to his utmost to help his crew achieve their goals. Just being on the course is its own reward. Soak up the atmosphere of this great occasion. Stay calm and focussed. Push yourself through the pain.

SBHS DebatingDebating MIC ReportLast week I was at FED and watched our Year 10s speak up as Year 11s and do an excellent job at beating the Trinity Year 11 in a definitional debate. Our Year 10s showed themselves to be confident and highly competent debaters and the debate was one of the most interesting I have ever seen. Our three Senor teams won and our three junior teams lost. Well done to all of you. Ms Rigby was at Rose Bay where we had Years 9, 10 and 11 wins on the topic of gender issues. On Monday Riley Irwin debated in a Public School team at Parliament House for Commonwealth Day. Congratulations on being chosen for the team and more congratulations for being chosen as Best Speaker. This is the third year in succession that we have been invited to send one of our students to this debate and the third year they have been chosen as Best Speaker. Just a reminder that NSW trials are on this weekend 15-16 March. Antony and Chris very strongly encourage the seniors to trial, including Year 10s, and especially the boys who have received a callback. The premier’s debating challenge starts its 2014 run this week with our Year 12 team
debating Endeavour High School. Good luck to the boys. Debating Prefect ReportIn last week’s competitions, we had three wins apiece in both Eastside (Years 9, 10 and 11 prevailed against Rose Bay) and FED (Years 10, 11 and 12 prevailed against Trinity). In both competitions we learnt valuable lessons for the season. The senior topic in Eastside was “Hollywood has been damaging for feminism”. This debate descended into an example war with both sides naming female-centric Hollywood films and what feminism is about. In cases like this it is important to know what you are talking about especially the definition of feminism. In the FED competition, the senior topic was “That medical records should be kept online” and this week Arthur Chao (Year 10 Debating Coordinator) has kindly written about his teams’ experience – Last Friday, some Year 10 debaters (Thomas Shortridge, Max Koslowski and myself) went to Trinity and debated against their Year 11s. The topic we received was somewhat vague and hence open to interpretation. Unfortunately, it turned into a definition debate, with us being the NEG. Generally, it is the duty of the AFF to set up the definition and the bounds of the debate in a reasonable manner. If the AFF does so appropriately, then the NEG should agree and debate in those lines, ensuring a normal debate occurs. However Trinity (the AFF team) set up the debate to be that currently we use paper for medical records and proposed this should be changed to keep records on computers and online. In actual fact as we learnt after the debate, the status quo is currently that records are kept online for immediate access by individual clinics and hospitals in a regional or local manner. Evidently, they were not aware of this and so they essentially defined us to arguing for paper. This is a position which is neither fair nor defendable so in these cases the NEG must contest the definition and propose a more compromising definition to set the parameters of the debate. We set it up as that health records will be kept on the internet and thus allowing general public access. According to the adjudicator this was also too extreme and he would've preferred a more central position where there is consent involved. In the rest of the debate neither side agreed on a definition and so what we did was to argue both cases, their case and our case, thereby winning the debate. Tips of the Week

World’s Greatest Shave
On Tuesday 11th of March, our CSC (Community Service Community) held the World's Greatest Shave
to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation, Australia's peak body for blood cancer, who
fund research and provide free services to support people with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and
related blood disorders, and their families. The day began at 8:15, with $2 hair colouring
at the flat and junior quad. This continued until the bell. Then at lunch, the main event
began at the amphitheatre. Over 30 heads were shaved, while speakers blasted music and
encouraged enthusiasm from the crowd. Our donation collectors amassed an amazing $432.50 by
the end of the day. This year WGS was organised by Shreyas Pulapaka and Alexander Hossain,
assisted by Adilmorad Nadir, Soloman Saleh and Ethan Ou. We also had Andrew Nam, Angus
Wu, Bosco Tran, Alif Khondaker, Josh Sangueza, Tahmeed Hossain, Niyaz Mostafa and Joshua
Tran helping with colouring and money collection. Our outstanding shavers were Shayan
Vatandoust, Michael Dadson, Boris Amromin, Nick Phillis, Niyazul Bari and Tarun Sethi.
Gautham Shankar, Michael Dadson, Shayan Vatandoust and Denny Fu lent us clippers to use for
the shave. Thanks to all who participated and/or donated to help make this such a
successful fun day for a necessary charity.

The end of another season, and to the 13s, the end to their first! First grade did not only come in first place, but were UNDEFEATED with 520 points for and a spectacular 352 against, this was an amazing season for first grade (THE BEST EVER!). Another big congratulations to all teams for encouraging the spirit of Sydney High and putting their heart and soul into every game and good luck for next season! The b’ball dinner is at max capacity with 290 approx. in attendance!!! Glanden Zheng is giving up his position as Shootin’ Hoops editor and I will be stepping up to his spot. SHS RowingGPS Head of the RiverSaturday 15 March 2014 Hope you can make the journey to the Sydney International Regatta Centre to experience this impressive event.
This is the big day on the GPS school calendar and it is quite a spectacle with all GPS schools attending. We have our own decorated marquee for schoolboys and spectators so put on the blue and brown and come and cheer! All rowing parents are invited to the Rowing Dinner/Presentation Night that evening in the Great Hall, where thanks are extended to everyone involved in the season – coaches, staff, committee, parents and the boys. 1st Grade
After a disappointing washout last week where First Grade tennis
had a chance to accumulate much needed points First Grade faced Newington at High for the last
round of this season’s GPS tournament. Newington having already confirmed the victory had
proven their ability throughout the season and we were well aware of the opposition we were
facing. However, despite this we intended to finish the season on a positive note. 1 and 2
doubles fought hard in the first two sets both having the opportunities to clinch the opening
sets however where unable to. Stevie and Eddy in number 3 doubles again showed their dominance in
doubles however could not finish off their match before their opponents where able to get back
into the match. In the singles results varied. Newington being a very talented side managed to
win the 1, 2, 3 and 6 singles matches however Eddy and Jack had close encounters lasting three
sets. Both players played great matches showing their consistent improvement but again displayed
our team’s major weakness - not being able to finish off matches. Finishing in equal
7th position it is obviously not a position that we were hoping for but one we can improve
on.

First Grade Captain
2nd Grade
High Seconds were confident going into the last rubber of the
season to see all their blood, sweat and tears to be put into action. With an unfortunate wash
out against Joeys, High were ready to finish the season strong. Doubles 1, Richard and Bohan,
fought against tough and aggressive net players and were overwhelmed, losing 6-2 6-2. Doubles 2,
Carl and James, fought against tough baseline players. However, aggressive net play resulted in a
6-4 6-2 win. Doubles 3, Danny and Aaron, played consistently combined with solid net play,
overwhelming their inconsistent opponents and comfortably winning 6-0 6-1. With 2 out the the 3
doubles won, High were confident with only 3 more matches needed to bring home the win. Number 1,
Richard, played consistently with a tough baseline strategy tiring out his opponent and winning
in an intense 4-6 6-2 6-2. Number 2, Carl, played a chip and charge style with the inability to
play consistent ground strokes and unfortunately had an unfinished match due to time restraint
with a result of 6-2 5-7 3-4. Number 3, Danny, played a strong and fast paced opponent and was
overpowered resulting in a 4-6 2-6 loss. Number 4, Aaron, played a tough baseline style player
and was outplayed in consistency and power, losing 1-6 1-6. Number 5, James, played with solid
ground strokes and aggressive net play comfortably winning the first set 6-1. However loss of
focus after a 3-0 lead in the second led to a 4-6 loss. But regain of concentration allowed for
him to finish his opponent with a 6-1 4-6 6-3 win. Number 5, Bohan, played a consistency type
player but consistent play from Bohan too led to a tight but unfortunate 1-6 6-3 3-6 loss. The
rubber finished with 4 wins per team and 1 draw resulting in an overall 6-6 draw. This was a
great way to finish off the GPS season against one of the strongest schools, and High are
confident for the coming season.

5th Grade
It was the last match of the season, and High Fifth Grade was
looking to end the season on a high note, playing Newington College. Doubles 1, William Du and
Gordon Qian had a tough match pulling through at the end with a 6-5 (7-5) win in the tiebreaker,
coming back from being 5-2 down. Doubles 2, Michael Hauser and Jason Garrett played a stronger
game than their opponents winning 6-4. Despite the great doubles match results, W Du and M Hauser
unfortunately lost their singles match 4-6 and 3-6, respectively. However J Garrett won his
singles match swimmingly, outplaying his opponent with a 6-0 win, as well as G Qian also winning
6-4. Overall, High has had a great tennis season greatly enjoying the GPS tournament. Hopefully
coming back next year with a new and stronger team.

Junior Results
16 As
It is the last match of the GPS tennis season and everyone arrived
early to prepare for the devastation of Newington College. Although the Cs and Ds matches took
longer than expected and took up our warm up period, that did not deter us. The matches started
off with doubles as usual with the A1 pair winning 6-2 but the A3 pair losing 6-2. In the singles
area the A1 lost 6-3, the A2 pulling off a 6-1 win. The A3 performed well and managed a 6-2 win
but the A4 lost 6-1. Today was an overall win for the As good effort this season.

Congratulations on the outstanding results on our last match against
Newington. SBHS 14A tennis played at Newington courts on the 8th of March. A1 and A2 doubles we
won 6-0. A1 singles we won 6-1 and A2 singles we also won 6-1. A3 and A4 doubles we won 6-3. A3
singles we won 6-5 and A4 singles we lost 3-6. Overall we had an amazing game and we won 5 sets
to 1. Congratulations and see you next season!

P&C General Meeting - 2013 HSC Analysis
The P&C thanks Dr Jaggar for his presentation at our General meeting last Monday where he provided an analysis of the 2013 HSC and ATAR results. We had a large number of interested parents in attendance and the information provided was invaluable in gaining an understanding of these complex processes. This was the last P&C meeting for Term 1. The next General Meeting will be held in Term 2 at 6:30pm on Monday 12th May in the Staff Common Room. We look forward to seeing you there.

NSW Government Announces Light Rail Bridge for Students of SBHS and SGHS
Many of you would have seen the item in the Telegraph this week announcing changes to the Light Rail in the Moore Park area, including provision for a separate bridge across Anzac Parade between the schools and the Light Rail station to provide safe crossing for students. The P&C was represented on the Light Rail working group and would like to thank those involved for their work in bringing this issue to the attention of the Departments involved. The co-operative and collaborative approach adopted by the two schools was a key element in this positive outcome.
