Weights Room for 2015
Examinations and qualifications for Year 11 courses Science students have to qualify to study two or three science courses in Year 11, 2015. Mr Kay makes the final decision in the light of a student’s record in Year 10 science. There will be restrictions on boys being allowed to enrol in both physics and chemistry. Students wishing to do both physics and chemistry will require more proof of their overall academic capability, as evidence by their position on the academic rank order. Students who are allowed to enrol in physics and / or chemistry in Year 11, 2015, know that they need to reach band 4 standard (70%) in order to qualify to continue in physics or chemistry beyond the Preliminary Stage.

CONGRATULATIONS TO PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE CERTIFICATES AND
MEDALISTS 26,000 NSW students earned Gold Certificates for completing the Premier’s Reading Challenge - to read 20 age appropriate books per year. Congratulations to Daniel Hu (Year 8) – Platinum Certificate and to Dennis Chan (Year7) – Platinum Certificate. 4,400 students earned Platinum Certificates for successfully completing the Premier’s Reading Challenge over 7 years - 20 books a year for 7 years. Special congratulations to Nicholas Katsilis – Year 9 who won a medal for being among 250 Year 9 students who have completed the Challenge every year since Year 3 – again 20 books a year!! What a wonderfully inspiring literacy program the Premier’s Reading Challenge is - 260,000 students from 2100 schools completed the Premier’s Reading Challenge in 2014! Just a hint to parents – some parents encourage their sons to read by purchasing 20 Premier’s Reading Challenge books - perhaps for Christmas?? This can ensure a result. I only heard of this this year. Premier’s Reading Challenge books held by each school library are identified in the Library Catalogue in a special report on the Home page – thanks to DEC IT magic. This will continue when we migrate to Oliver.

‘Bring Your Own Device’ Program: Advice for 2015Application of this AdviceThe Sydney Boys High School Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program has now been finalised for 2015. All documentation has been updated and is available for you to view on the BYOD website at:
All students heading into Years 7 – 10 2015 are expected to bring a device of their own choosing and ownership to school each day. In addition, any student with a Digital Education Revolution laptop (students in Years 11 – 12, 2015) may also bring their own device to school under this BYOD program. Recommended DevicesYou may elect to bring any device which meets the Device Specification. However, selecting a technology device is not simple, and the Specification is particular. Our recommended devices are designed to simplify your choices and purchasing processes. Sydney Boys High School has again partnered with ASI Solutions to make our recommended devices available: Microsoft Surface Pro 3
The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is the best convertible multi-touch device available. The device has an excellent quality screen and is supplied with the Surface Pro 3 type cover. The Surface is an exceptionally versatile device for use with our BYOD program. Lenovo ThinkPad X240
The ThinkPad X240 is a thin and very light device that fits well in a school bag. Battery life is excellent. Looked after, the X240 should readily complete four years of high school service. Lenovo ThinkPad 11e (Windows)
The ThinkPad 11e is Lenovo’s speciality education product. It features rubber bumpers and a thicker screen surround to help it withstand the bumps inherent with bringing a device to school. It’s heavier and a slower device than the other options, but is well positioned for our BYOD program. Why Purchase a Recommended Device?All our recommended devices are configured to meet the device specification comfortably. All feature solid state disks and so have no moving parts. Warranties are a minimum of 3 years. Lenovo devices feature an on-site warranty which means the device can be fixed by a technician at school, ensuring its maximum availability. A four year warranty option is also available. Additionally, Accidental Damage Protection insurance is available as an option for your peace of mind. Recommended devices are available at a discount from their retail pricing through our device purchasing portal. How to Purchase a Recommended DeviceYou may purchase a recommended device from our purchasing portal. Visit the BYOD website for instructions to access the portal and place an order. The purchasing portal is available to all families of Sydney Boys High School students. You need the following code to register for the Purchasing Portal: Sbhs@14 Note the code is case-sensitive. Devices ordered through the Purchasing Portal will take three to four weeks to become available. You can opt to pick up your order from the ASI Solutions office in Botany (open through the January holidays) or from the school’s BYOD Technical Support office (Room 703) during school term. Other Device OptionsThere are dozens of suitable devices in the market for you to choose from apart from those which we recommend and which you can buy through our purchasing portal. Additionally, no recommended device is an Apple Macintosh laptop, but both the 11" and 13" MacBook Air meet all the Device Specification requirements. Take care to ensure your chosen device meets the Device Specification. Ensuring it meets the requirements for Wireless Network connectivity can be difficult when buying in store. An important note about softwareNo recommended device ships with Microsoft Office, but a word processor and a spreadsheet product are a requirement of the Software section of the Device Specification. Microsoft Office for Windows and Macintosh is available to students for free. Students can log into the Student Portal to find instructions for obtaining this software. High TideSydney Boys High School Sailing22nd November 2014 For the second week in a row, the predicted strong S breezes did not eventuate for High sailors at Rose Bay on Saturday. Instead, the usual light winds from the SW were blowing and shifting to the east. The view from the shore as the Sydney High fleet rounded the point was somewhat reminiscent of the Spanish Armada, with the Scots College and Ascham boats coming out to do battle in the eight knot wind. Without the Cranbrook sailors this week, the racing fleet numbered thirty boats and with Australia’s richest man watching on from his very large yacht in the harbour, the Pacer burgee was hoisted, the Blue Peter raised and the racing was in sequence for a start. The first of the three short triangle races began with Darren Taing and Edwin Zhu continuing High’s recent successful sailing with a second place over the finish line. The second race was similar with Darren Taing and crew repeating their podium positions with another second. The third race was better with a striking, pin end start on port by Angelo Yan and Kai Huang blitzing the fleet and leading around all marks. In second place were Thomas Shortridge and Ethan Tay, sailing well in the shifting winds and Darren Taing and Edwin Zhu rounding off a first, second and third, full podium finish. Good skippering by Stratton Varkirtzis, in his first race as a skipper was impressive, gaining a mid-fleet placing and pleasing crewing efforts by the newer sailors, Hugh Zhou, Thomas Smallbone and Jack Vorgias were also worth a mention.
Series leader, Kai Matsumoto and Darren Lim, had a couple of forgettable results with an over the
line restart in the first race, a mid-fleet finish in the second and a collision in the third.
This will condense the series leaders’ board and make next week (the last racing week) an
important series determining regatta.

Our hard work and dedication through the pre-season was useless
if we were not able to bring our best ability to the first round clash against Scots College. We
huddled prior to the rubber commencing and outlined the goal for the day, which was to let the
process of every shot be the deciding factor in the outcome between winning and losing. The
doubles kicked up and we were able to assert our dominance over Scots quickly by sealing the
first three matches, alleviating the pressure on us and instead placing it on Scots as they then
knew they had to win five of the next six singles match to get themselves the win for round 1.
Unfortunately for them this was not going to happen as our singles also were a step above theirs.
Although Eddy struggled against a high level opponent we were victorious in all other matches.
This comfortable win of 11-1 placed us at the top of the GPS ladder and with one round left this
year against SHORE at home we will do our best to sustain this position.

Second Grade travelled to Scots College on a warm day for the
start of the 2014-2015 AAGPS Tennis Competition, knowing that a win was essential to begin our
campaign for the premiership. The boys were excited about the match and well-prepared from all
the training sessions and trial matches this term. The number one doubles pair started positively
and held two match points at 6-4 5-4 which were well saved by the opponents. From here, silly
errors resulted in a poor match tiebreak and a loss of 6-4 5-7 6-10. The number two pair played
against very good opponents and took a tight first set. After losing the second set, they were
calm under pressure and played the important points with confidence, winning the match 6-4 3-6
10-6 The 2-1 lead in the doubles gave the team a small boost going into the singles rubbers. At
number one, Richard dispatched his opponent 6-1 6-4, although he should have finished the second
set much quicker. At number five, Branko played a solid opponent and had match points in the
second set tiebreaker which were not converted. Loss of concentration led to a 6-3 6-7(9) 3-6
loss. Wanyu’s great form continued as he crushed his opponent 6-1 6-0. Overall, the team
enjoyed an important victory of 5.5-3.5 and earn 3 bonus points. However, rivals Kings and
Riverview both won 9-0, so a victory of a similar score is necessary against Shore in the 2nd
Round if the team is to have any chance of winning the premiership.

On the 23rd of November, Sydney Boys 15As team played against
Scots on Moore Park. We fought hard but they were more skilled and we were unlucky. Our team
overall lost. Bad luck boys better luck next time.

On Saturday we played against The Scots College at Moore Park Courts;
our performance was commendable but our results did not reflect this. Our tenacity was not enough
to overcome our opponent who played very well. Our score for D1 and D2 doubles was 2-6 to Scots,
D4 and D5 doubles score was 4-6 to Scots; while singles scores were D1 lost 6-1, D2 lost 6-0, D3
lost 6-1 and D4 lost 6-1

On Saturday, the 14Cs played Scots College. They were formidable
opponents who overpowered us with their final score 5–1. Although this was a loss, it was
an improvement from the past few weeks. It was great to see our second doubles team of Daniel and
Thomas win their match 6–0.. Another notable mention was Thomas who made an impressive
comeback. Unfortunately, his efforts were in vain as he lost in the tie breaker. Everyone has
shown an improvement over the last few weeks and it is hoped that we will keep working on our
consistency.

The last week of trial matches for High. Just scraping a 50% win rate, we are still staying on top. Another big week from the 15s and a convincing win from the 16 As is good to see.
The Rashcke Cup and Yeend Shield were both highly contested by both the Firsts and Seconds. The games are 15 minutes running clock (even for FTs etc). These games are in a different format to the AAGPS Saturday match but indicate results which are based mostly on athletic personnel within each squad. The tables from the Raschke and Yeend for were:

The first AAGPS competition match this season will be against Shore. Last game against Shore, our win rate was right up at 76%. This is a big number to achieve and we should be aiming to maintain this to make up for last week. ALL OPENS AND 16s ARE AT HOME THIS WEEK. BRING YOUR SUPPORT!!!!!!!!!!
