Student Award Scheme
Music Awards Assembly "Special guests, members of the P & C Music Committee, musicians, tutors, staff and students, welcome to our annual Music Awards Assembly. The Performance Music Program is a very important one at High. We have most mornings assigned to ensembles in our off-line timetable. More than 250 boys participate. We have a tradition of training a Marching Band, principally to perform at each Anzac Day march. We have numerous ensembles that have opportunities for public performances at assemblies, in front of their parents and peers. We have musicians who represent the school at school and public functions, in Performing arts Unit ensembles, at Shopping Centres and at private functions, such as the string ensemble performing at Government House at the Sir Roden and Lady Cutler Foundation function. "The assembly today is designed to recognise and reward all the boys who have taken part in the program this year. Some boys have performed in multiple ensembles and have taken up new instruments to augment areas where instruments were needed. In addition, most of our participants practised privately with tutors during the season to maintain their performance standard. In terms of hours spent on an activity, music is as demanding as any sport. It is more costly also. "We acknowledge today those special performers and scholars who have attained excellence in their musical accomplishments. The performance component of the academic music program is enhanced by the participation of these scholars. It is also inspiring for young musicians to be able to be able to perform alongside their more experienced fellow students. Music performance complements ceremonial, celebratory and social events. We often ask our music staff to provide ensembles or individuals to perform for us or others associated with High, usually at short notice. "As usual, I want to thank the Music teachers, Ms Miller, Ms Lim and Ms Kim, as well as our professional tutors, for the time they have devoted to training ensembles for performance. "Musical performance is great for brain development. It stimulates brain growth in maturing students and enhances internal hemisphere communication. Music is important because of the way it allows the brain to have a rest from academic contemplation. It allows you to get into the ‘zone’. It also stimulates cross hemispheric synaptic growth. As a consequence, performing music is good for your personal growth and mental health. I encourage boys to continue with their music, even as support players in ensembles. You can have fun, make friends and accomplish something authentic by joining an ensemble. "We have a program of joint musical / drama productions with SGHS which has enriched the performance opportunities for musicians in both schools. High produces many outstanding musicians. The tradition of multiple Encore nominations continues this year with five boys. High is a great school in which to study music to HSC level. "Thank you to the Music Staff and Ms Louis Graul for their work in administering the music program this year. The Music Committee raises valuable funds through parking activities. This money is used to provide large instruments for our program and to assist musicians with music scholarships. I thank the Music Committee on your behalf for their support. I congratulate those boys being recognised and awarded today and urge as many boys as possible to engage in musical training and performance. "
Orientation Day 2014 
Honeybees ConcertOn Saturday evening the Honeybees performed in the Great Hall. Hosting this event over the past few years has been one of the many activities we undertake as part of our charitable work at High. The evening consisted of great entertainment being performed by the 26 strong acapella choir whilst guests enjoyed the picnics they had brought along. We even got a chance to take part in participating in a rendition of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot – some of us with more musical skill than others! This year the Honeybees were raising funds for Medicins San Frontieres who are leading the fight against Ebola in West Africa. As part of this very enjoyable evening we heard from a nurse from Liberia who is studying Public Health at UNSW. Her very emotional speech struck a chord with everyone in the audience and undoubtedly was part of the reason for the enormous proceeds collected at the end of the evening which came to $5700.
Next year the concert will be on 5 December. I highly recommend you write it in your
diaries!
Orientation & Enrolment DayTHANK YOUMany thanks to the students who participated in Orientation Day and helped our 2015 students and families feel welcome. It was great to see the large number of both junior and senior students become involved. The school tours were popular again this year and our tour guides did a wonderful job. Thank you to the senior students who assisted our Administrative Staff in and around the Common Room. Your help was invaluable and allowed us to move through the enrolment process as quickly as possible. Your assistance was greatly appreciated. Thank you to Mr Mick Aldous, Ms Paris Munro, Mr Paul Scrivener, our Program Managers and our MICs for organising the students and activities. Thank you also to Mr Jim Crampton, Mr Andrew Nguyen, Mr Nathan Smith and the students who assisted with the set up for the day’s events. Thank you to our tireless P&C parents who once again provided welcome refreshments throughout the afternoon for our new families.
A special thank you must go to our Administrative Staff. Thank you for your hard work during the
long weeks of preparation and your fantastic efforts on what is our busiest day of the year. This
year SASS processed the enrolments in record time which was a fantastic effort. Thank you for
invaluable support and for staying until the last student was enrolled.
Remembrance DayAt 11am on 11 November, Sydney Boys High School commemorated Remembrance Day. This memorial was particularly poignant as this year marks the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War. Thanks to the presenters: Thomas Nassif, Chi Mao, Angus Wu and Arthur Chao. The Ode – The Ode is taken from Laurence Binyon’s poem For the Fallen.
Music NotesAnnual Music AssemblyOur annual music assembly held on Monday 10th of November acknowledged all the hard work and achievements of our Music students this year. Thank you to our special guest speaker Professor William Gladstone (UTS), who gave an inspiring address to the boys. Large Ensembles ConcertThe Large Ensembles Concert was a huge success with the Intermediate Concert Band opening up the concert on Monday evening (10th November) followed by Symphony Orchestra, Senior Concert Band and also featuring the 3 ensembles that will be performing in the USA next year (String Ensemble, Stage Band and Concert Band). Thank you to all the parents and friends who came and supported the boys! =) Jazz in the CourtyardJazz in the Courtyard and Small Ensembles will be performing on Sunday 23rd of November, 3.30pm. There will be a workshop for all ensembles before the concert between 1-3pm. The concert is FREE and we ask that you bring along a picnic basket to enjoy with your family and friends. Please support the 2015 Music USA Tour as the music committee will be selling afternoon tea before and during the concert. Performing Ensembles:

High TideSydney Boys High School Sailing8th November 2014 This Saturday yielded great results for High. Winds started off very light in the morning, resulting in a quick paddle out of the bay. Fortunately, the wind later picked up, carrying the fleet over to Rose Bay fairly quickly. There were 2 Fleet Races during the day and Teams Racing was cancelled. The first short race saw High sailors in first (Kai Matsumoto/Darren Lim), third (Angelo Yan/Kai Huang) and seventh places (Darren Taing). In the second race, Angelo Yan filled first position, Darren Taing was second, Kai Matsumoto sailed into third place, with Tiger Zhang and crew sailing into the first four positions. A great result with High sailors filling five out of the top ten places. (Dallas Yan/ Kim Nicholls in seventh place).
The wind grew fickle in the second race; yet High sailors persevered, despite a slightly
difficult start for some. The results from the second race proved, as before, the talent and
skill, as well as the yields of excellent training from High’s Coaches, of High’s
sailors in their ability to adapt and sail superbly in changing conditions. Overall this Saturday
bore consistent results, as well as giving a trove of experience to the newer sailors.

If 17/28 is the worst for SBHS in a decade then it can’t be too bad at SBHS... Nevertheless we need to lift our game and respect the work being put in by the High community. Five consecutive losses in opens were harsh. There were some positive signs with the juniors having a 70% win rate. A close loss in the 14 Bs and draw in the 14 Cs at 17 a piece were results which could have gone differently. The Firsts came within a few defensive stops and a few free throws of victory and have performed really well at times. Next week is St Ignatius who are UNDEFEATED in firsts. Firsts play at Gartlan Centre 1 – 11.15. Support is much appreciated. Good luck and go High!

MIC of Cricket Report Our 2nd XI had Riverview on the back foot from the start. But a starring role from a Year 8 student scoring 83 helped them post a respectable total of 189. Raphin has improved his bowling remarkably and deserved to take his 4 wickets. The 3rd XI had Riverview 3-10 also setting a good platform. But on MPW 15 it’s hard to restrict the runs. They have a good chance to chase the total down. The 5th XI were accompanied by some U15 players and it came down to Arunan to try and score 11 runs at the end to win the match. He hit a fantastic straight drive, but they were unable to get the victory. 16As are also looking in a good position with Louis Saunders finally getting to his half century (especially running out Sabesh for 22). 15As have by far been the most improved side. At the start of the season they were struggling to score over 30 runs. Now in the past two matches have posted very good scores and look to be in the driver’s seat to win this match. Well done Jay Patel securing the school’s first fifer in an innings. Bowling his left arm mediums he was awarded with his continual line and length hitting the top of off stump. The 14As had a mixed day. Having Riverview 3-60 at the half way mark, 32nd over, Riverview managed to pile the runs on at the end. On Tuesday 11th November, Remembrance Day, our 1st XI played their 4th round match of the Alan Davidson Shield against last year’s winners, Kirrawee High School. Vishnu managed to lose his first toss for the season after winning 11 straight and we were sent in to field. Our bowlers bowled to our game plan and that was to attack the stumps. They were rewarded for their efforts having them 6-35. Unfortunately our sundries let us down giving away 30 extra runs that allowed them to post, what was still a below par score, 95. Although we always felt comfortable in winning the match we did make it difficult for ourselves having a middle order collapse at 5-50. But our dogged little opener Vishal Nomula held his wicket and won the game with an outstanding 47* which was well supported by Peter Yu, 17*, putting on a 40 run partnership. The boys will now play in the South East Regional final later in the term. This term we see many of our teams go on fantastic cricket tours. Our top Year 9 cricketers will be participating in the annual Barberis Cup which is played against Melbourne High School. This year our boys will be travelling to Melbourne from 16th – 19th November. The U15s and U14s cricketers participate in the annual East Coast Cup against Brisbane High School and they will be travelling up to Brisbane from 23rd – 26th November. Then our main tour which the 1st XI compete in is the highly competitive 5 Highs Tour. This year Brisbane is hosting the carnival and our boys will be travelling from the 30th November – 5th December. In the July holidays 2015 we are aiming to participate in a once in a life time opportunity to play in a cricket tournament hosted in Sri Lanka. We will be representing our school and Australia in the “World Premier Schools Cricket Challenge” Tournament. This is open to anyone in the current U15s-Opens cricket team. President: Glen Schofield President’s Report The Sydney Boys High P&C have enjoyed a productive year providing support to the school and students in line with our requirements under the P&C constitution. In 2014, the P&C worked closely with the Principal and the school executive, providing assistance and resources where requested. Examples of this support through 2014 include:
In 2014, the P&C was grateful for the support offered by a dedicated group of parents who generously gave their time serving on the executive committee. Thank you to Ron Trent (Vice President), Nea Saunders (Vice President), Glynis Bartley (Secretary), and Lawrence Ho (Treasurer) for their work throughout 2014. Thank you also to Usha Arvind, Nan Chen, Danny Flynn, Elaine Saunders, Glen Schofield, Darwesh Chand, Francisca Sjahry, Julie Connolly, Geoff Andrews, Jeremy Goff, Peter McGregor, Dora Shapiro and Minhua Zhang, all of whom undertook P&C roles on the various school governance bodies - or provided help and expertise in their specialist fields. Jason Chen, Nan Chen and a team of hard working parents continued to operate the mentor programme helping new parents in their transition to High. Thank you to all. This year, as in previous years, the Year Group parents’ representatives have been active in disseminating essential information and organising social evenings for their Year groups and we thank them for their help and support. At this time every year, we farewell many Year 12 parents and carers who have supported the school in a variety of ways during their boys’ time at High. The P&C and the school community owe them a debt of gratitude for their tireless efforts and wish them well in the future. These parents and carers can be found involved in the many activities that make up life at SBHS- whether it be in sport, debating, music, selection panels, governance bodies, canteen, or parking. Thank you to the following Year 12 parents who have helped sustain the ethos of the school through their work on P&C projects or through the P&C co-curricular sub-committees: George and Darunee Comninos, Anne Wall, Nina Liu, Irene Ben, Nick Evans, Yvette Hauser, Craig Phillis, Jim O’Sullivan, Frances Salmon, Carrie and Geoff Waring, Stamatina Farrugia and Jason Chen. Thank you to those Year 12 parents not mentioned who nonetheless contributed throughout the years in so many ways. P&C Funding Contributions to School Programs Consistent with the P&C’s objective of assisting “in providing facilities and equipment for the school”, the P&C has a distinct focus on raising and distributing funds for projects and programmes within the school. The financial capacity to provide this assistance is made possible by the support of parents through a combination of P&C membership fees, provision of event car parking within the school grounds, funds raised by whole School community events and profits from the School Canteen. In 2014, over $100,000 has been disbursed by the P&C for a number of projects and programmes identified and prioritised by the school, including: further donations to the Governors Centre building fund; continued funding for a third Year Adviser for Years 7 and 8; ongoing assistance with funding for the Community Services, Student Support and School Liaison Officer; provision for an upcoming replacement of the large school bus; provision of rebates for school expenditures on road upgrade works; continued funding and co-ordination of the Staff Common Room improvement works. A very special thanks to the Canteen Sub-committee, led by Sharon Hughes and the retiring Frances Salmon, who together with the Canteen staff, Karen and Tracey and their dedicated group of volunteers, have returned $85,000 back to the School to augment parent donations for the purposes above. The dedication and energy of the Canteen team continues to produce outstanding dividends for the school and our students. P&C Big Night Out and New Parents Welcome The Big Night Out and New Parents Welcome are annual events that are organised, funded in large part, and resourced by the P&C and parent/carer volunteers. Both these events require substantial input by those involved and the P&C would like to thank the many volunteers who helped make these events a success through co-ordinating the events as well as the many parents, carers and friends of the school who set-up, cooked, cleaned and marketed for these two important dates on the school calendar. P&C Co-curricular Sub-committees Sydney Boys High is unique as a state public school in its involvement in the demanding Athletics Association of Great Public Schools (GPS) competition. This, coupled with the extensive co-curricular programmes available to High students and its selective school status, provides boys with an educational experience unmatched in the state education system. Parent/carer involvement is essential in maintaining these opportunities now and into the future. Co-curricular Sub-committees and supporter groups are in the frontline of this involvement in marshalling volunteers and raising additional funds through parking, canteens, barbecues and providing other support as required. Thank you to the Sub-committees and their teams of volunteers for their hard work and selflessness throughout 2014. P&C Projects, Issues and Participation in Working Groups P&C Executive and Year Group representatives provided a high level of commitment in several ongoing school and school community projects and issues, including:
Governance Bodies- P&C Representation on the 探花视频 Foundation The 探花视频 Foundation is responsible for managing key school assets including the Outterside Centre, Fairland Pavilion, the High Store and Tennis Courts. The P&C wishes to thank Geoff Andrews (Foundation Chair), Peter McGregor and Glen Schofield for their contributions to the business of the Foundation on behalf of the P&C in 2014. The Foundation’s annual report is available for your interest. Governance Bodies- P&C Representation on the School Council Thank you to Julie Connolly (School Council President), Nea Saunders and Ronald Trent who represented the P&C at School Council meetings in 2014. Major issues discussed and dealt with at the School Council this year included the proposed light rail and Tibby Cotter bridge projects within the Moore Park precinct, school budgetary issues and Sports Council issues. P&C- Representation on Selection Panels During the year, the parent community once again participated on selection panels for the appointment of teaching and administrative positions within the School. Thanks are due to those parents who continue to support this important administrative role within the school on behalf of the P&C. A special thanks to Anne Wall and Irene Ben who have served on these panels numerous times and leave the school this year. P&C- Relationships The objectives of the Sydney Boys High School P&C are to “promote the interests of the school by bringing parents, citizens, students and teaching staff into close co-operation; and to assist in providing facilities and equipment” and “promoting the recreation and welfare of the students at the school.” The P&C executive believe that our commitment to these goals in 2014 resulted in a high level of co-operation between the P&C and School stakeholders, including the Principal and school executive, teaching and administrative staff, the School Council, 探花视频 Foundation and the Old Boys Union. We would like to thank all of these individuals, groups and organisations for their part in maintaining a positive relationship with the P&C and we look forward to working together in 2015. On behalf of the P&C, I extend our warmest thanks to Dr Jaggar, the teachers and staff at High who continue to provide a unique and outstanding educational experience for our sons. Finally, the P&C offers the warmest thanks to the parents, carers and friends of the school who have once again given of their time unstintingly throughout the year to help retain the special nature of this great school, Sydney Boys High. P&C Thank You PartyThis year’s P&C Thank You Party will be held in the Great Hall on Monday 8 December at 6:30pm to 9:00pm. There are a large number of parents and staff at High who contribute in a multitude of ways to the school throughout the year. The P&C would like to acknowledge these invaluable contributions and the P&C Thank You Party is one we can do this. We would ask anyone in the school family that has helped out in any way this year to come along and share a light supper, refreshments, some pleasant conversation, and let us say “thank you” to you and your partners.
