High Talent
The Co-Curricular Supervision Levy So as to clarify why the levy is necessary and should be supported, I want to share with you the direct costs to the school of management, supervision and duty of care. Staff members are remunerated by way of allowances (time free from face-to-face), or the period equivalent in money or a combination of the two. Non-teachers are paid the equivalent of the period allowance that would be offered to teachers. Sports organisation and supervision: $182,918. Co-curricular organisation and supervision: $79,581. Last year the Sports Levy raised $95,000. The community contribution thus is only a fraction of the cost borne by the school. As from December 1, the levy will be renamed: ‘The Co-curricular Supervision Levy’.

IMPORTANT: Due to a world wide shortage of vaccines Varicella vaccination (Chicken pox) will be withdrawn from the vaccines offered on the third visit 2014. Nurses will prepare a letter and a Chicken pox Fact Sheet to send to parents who have consented for their child to receive varicella vaccine.

‘Bring Your Own Device’ Program UpdateIn late July, the expansion of the Sydney Boys High School Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Program was announced. A letter was sent to Year 7 and Year 8 parents as well as an advertisement placed in High Notes outlining the program and inviting your feedback. As a reminder: In 2015 students in Years 7 – 10 will be expected to bring their own computing device to school every day. The BYOD Program is designed to give you, as students and families, freedom to make technology choices that suit you and all your circumstances. Last Opportunity for CommentSince the launch of the program, we have been refining the program policies, developing operational protocols and analysing your feedback. A number of parents took the opportunity to provide feedback to the project team. All comments are taken seriously, and all parents were provided with a detailed response. HistorTea for AmnestyLast Friday, the History Department hosted a HistorTea to raise money for Amnesty International. The History teachers were baking overtime to produce enough cakes and brownies for the 35 boys who had bought tickets to the event. It was a great opportunity for different Year groups, and teachers, to socialise. We had great tea and cake and raised over $150 for Amnesty International.

You need JavaScript enabled to view it The SAGSE Ball 2014On Friday, October 24, the annual Black Tie Ball took place in Doltone House on the water’s edge in Pyrmont. The occasion? The awarding of the scholarships to the twelve winners from New South Wales. Excited students, happy parents, representatives of German industries and the Consul General as well as a delegation from Germany were attending. There were of course also former scholarship winners who talked about their experiences in Germany. A short film showed last years “Stippies” in situ – one of them not quite sure which way round a cello is to be played (Sagar Nagaraj!) – which was very entertaining. After the main course each student was called to the stage and presented with his/her scholarship certificate by the sponsor. As I was taking photos a lady tapped me on the shoulder and asked: “Have you got another student this year?” (She had remembered me from 2013) to which I replied: “Two!”
It was a fabulous evening and I am sure that the Australian students will have a wonderful time
in Germany and be excellent ambassadors of their home country.
High TideSydney Boys High School Sailing25th October 2014 Again gentle breezes (less than ten knots) assisted the lighter Sydney High crews to gain excellent places in the three races held on Saturday morning on Rose Bay. Thomas Shortridge and Ethan Tay as crew were “on fire”, with podium finishes in the first two races held. Their boat, “Charlotte”, (at right-14) named after a first fleet convict ship, also skippered by a Thomas (Gilbert), twice benefitted from a pin end start and led the fleet for the first three legs of the long race. These two good placings will see Thomas close in on the leaders in the Saturday Sailing Point Score rankings. His greatest challenger is probably High’s Kai Matsumoto, who sailing with Remington Lim as crew, also added to his pointscore tally with an excellent race three result, second place across the line. Other skippers sailed well in the limited breezes and adapted well to the changed course when the wind turned to the SW. With more consistent Fleet Race results, High’s sailing is using the races to provide greater experience for our mainly younger crews, who after the Fleet Races, then sailed home to DBSC in the softening breeze. The crews then completed an excellent de-rig in a quick time and this saw the boys finished, washed, smiling and out of the clubhouse just after 1 pm. Another great day in paradise on Sydney Harbour.

Chess NewsCongratulations to the boys who played last Sunday in the Macquarie University Australian Schools Chess Challenge.
Representing High in our B team were James Snow, Sean Zhang and Louis Shapiro who were awarded
10th place out of the 32 teams in the competition and our A team (Raymond Li, Johnson Lin and
Peter Boylan) were awarded second place.

The Saturday just gone was intense. With all 16s and 15s winning their games, and an overall win rate of 73 percent, our percentage is “High”… As Mr Hayman says though; “It’s not about winning, it’s about being your best. Winning is a by-product which happens when you strive to help your team to be their best”. Let’s hope Firsts continue to gain momentum. The 16 Ds match going into overtime and coming out on top by 5 points, and the 15 As just scraping a win by 2 points, this week was close. This Saturday is the Grammar match. This is going to be a big week so get ready and train hard. GO HIGH!

SBHS CricketCricket Results 2014 Term 4 Week 3
MIC of Cricket Report During the week we had Cricket NSW come out and host a Milo T20 Blast competition between our U14s and U15s team. The boys thoroughly enjoyed their time and it was a great way to mingle with other players. U14s and U15s playing in the Milo T20 Blast Over the weekend we played our final trial match against King’s in a one-day match. It is great to see our 16As finally get their first win for the season thanks to Sabash Muruganathan (88) and Louis Saunders (46). They boys batted superbly and then followed it up with tight bowling and good fielding. The 4th and 5th XI battled hard in their matches showing great improvement. Well done to Amit Deep who scored his first ever half century in all forms of cricket. The 2nd XI bowled first and kept King’s very quiet with the bat at the start of the innings being only 100 runs after 30 overs. But with a few missed chances allowed King’s to get away with it at the end posting a very difficult score to chase. The boys knew they had a difficult challenge and were unable to contest. The match of the day undoubtedly goes to the 1st XI. Batting first on a spinning deck, King’s worked out the conditions very quickly and threw their spinners on early. Our boys struggle to counterattack and were bowled out for just 81. We knew the conditions were difficult and we felt we were about 30 runs short. When King’s were 2-50 we thought we had an early day on our hands. Our boys then decided to change the field setting and bowlers and this turned things around. King’s collapsed to 8-69 then it became 9-75. We could feel a victory on hand. King’s then managed to hook a short delivery for 4 to win the game. We were very proud of our players and they should feel confident for our first GPS match against Grammar. The biggest blunder of the week must go to Sura Raunuk. Being an U17s player, Sura is allowed to bowl 8 overs in a spell. He was bowling superbly causing a lot of trouble. Then for some unknown reason he was replaced after 6 overs. At the end of the match we questioned why this happened. He told us because he is U16s therefore could only bowl 6 overs in a spell. We then had to remind him of his age that he was actually in fact 17, not 16, and that he could have bowled an extra two more overs and possibly got us over the line. Part of increasing participation, improving our skills and enjoying the game we have decided to create an U14s development squad. Here the boys will learn the basic elements of the game that incorporates breaking down the skill and then moving into fun and active modified games. The boys learnt the art of a forward defence and throwing. Next week we will focus more on fielding and some bowling. This term we see many of our teams go on fantastic cricket tours. Our top Year 9 cricketers will be participating in the annual Barberis Cup which is played against Melbourne High School. This year our boys will be travelling to Melbourne from 16th – 19th November. The U15s and U14s cricketers participate in the annual East Coast Cup against Brisbane High School and they will be travelling up to Brisbane from 23rd – 26th November. Then our main tour which the 1st XI compete in is the highly competitive 5 Highs Tour. This year Brisbane is hosting the carnival and our boys will be travelling from the 30th November – 5th December. In the July holidays 2015 we are aiming to participate in a once in a life time opportunity to play in a cricket tournament hosted in Sri Lanka. We will be representing our school and Australia in the “World Premier Schools Cricket Challenge” Tournament. This is open to anyone in the current U15s-Opens cricket teams.
