High Talent
Congratulations to Kevin Ke (Year 11) on his selection in the
2015 Australian Science Olympiad Summer School, organised by Australian Science Innovations. He
will be one of the 80 students selected from the competitions in biology, chemistry, physics and
earth and environmental sciences that attracted 4000 elite science students in Australia. The
Summer School is held at ANU in January. The Olympiad team of 17 is then chosen. Good luck,
Kevin. The program is sponsored by BHP, ANU and the Commonwealth Department of Education,
Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).
Valé Gough Whitlam
Gough Whitlam, who passed away on Tuesday, was an
extraordinary figure in Australian politics. He has generated great respect in recent years on
both sides of politics for his prescience, vision, sense of purpose and drive. He had a plan to
move Australian society forward. His great legacy is the game-changing suite of initiatives in
education, health, social welfare, industrial relations and foreign affairs that he made in just
three years as Prime Minister (1972-75). His crash through or crash approach to getting
things done really shook up the Canberra establishment. His vision was confronting and stirred
intense conservative opposition. A political crisis was engineered which led to action by the
Governor-General to dismiss the Prime Minister. The irony is that Whitlam’s political life
has come to be defined by his dismissal by the Governor-General rather than by the great work he
did as our country’s leader. He will be missed by all Australians who admire people who see
things clearly through a lens of principle and act courageously to do what they see as right for
society.
House Captains
House captains play an important role in the school. They
help to build engagement with school life. Having a sense of belonging and a sense of
contributing to something greater than ourselves are important human needs. When boys are growing
up they are particularly sensitive to these needs. House rivalry brings a sense of tribalism to
the school community. To belong to a House makes you have a bond with all those other wearing the
same colours. You are united in a cause. The House Captains’ role is to provide a rallying
point for members of his House. He needs to lead the support for all competitors in his House at
swimming and athletics carnivals and at House competitions at school, such as basketball.
Collectively, House Captains rally support for whole school events such as GPS carnivals, Head of
the River and home games against SGS. Congratulations to Rick Saha (Eedy), Bennette Jiang
(Fairland), Anthony Allingham (McKay), Leonard Mah (Rubie), Daniel Ahn (Saxby) and Tom Luo
(Torrington). I expect that all students will support their House captains and the other members
of their Houses.
Educational Research and Resourcing at High
Recently conducted student
usage surveys have found that our students make very heavy usage of research and resourcing
facilities at High. Whether they are accessing school-supplied PCs for private research, or using
electronic or hard copy reference material, or privately studying, reading books, newspapers or
magazines, or working collaboratively with friends, or asking research or study advice, students
enjoy the dedicated spaces for these purposes. High is fortunate to have two places, catering for
220 students simultaneously. Each space is headed up by a Teacher-Librarian. Both spaces have
extended opening hours to cater for students arriving early for various commitments or because
travelling is easier early. Both spaces have Support Staff to administer the resources and help
student who borrow books or want to access resources.
One of these spaces (Killip Library) is resourced entirely by DEC – staff and support
staff. The other (McDonald Library) is financed entirely by the school. The
standard DEC cost for a teacher is $104,000 per annum. Each learning space has around $50,000 in
support services and a materials / fiction / subscriptions budget of $15,000. The school invests
$205k of its DEC delivered resources in order to provide services to every student. Similarly,
the school spends $205k of school and community raised funds to provide this range of educational
opportunities. The bulk of tis money comes from tax deductible donations to the Library Fund. In
order to describe the purposes of the Fund more accurately and explain the educational reasons
for enlisting parental financial support more sharply, the Library Fund will be renamed the
Student Research and Resources Fund as from December 1. The change will
be for internal marketing purposes and will not alter the status of the Fund or change its ABN.
Just to reinforce why support for the Libraries is needed, in the Killip Junior Library during
the last calendar year to October, nearly 100,000 people passed through the gate counter, going
in or out of the library. Individual students used the library 24,000 times during breaks in the
school day. Individual laptop use totalled >5,000. Nearly 8,000 resources were borrowed from
the Junior Library during the year. There is no doubt that our boys make great use of our
libraries.
Year 9, 2015 Mentors
In 2015, there will be 30 new enrolments into Year 9.
It is always difficult to transition to a new school, so we need people to help us make the
orientation to High as smooth as possible. In past years, current Year 8 boys have volunteered to
act as Peer Mentors for the incoming students. Some High boys already know students enrolling in
Year 9 as they have played with them in a sports team or went to the same primary school, or live
in the same suburb or know them socially. Some new boys have had visits to the school or have had
holiday training sessions with our boys. The role of Peer Mentor is not very onerous. We need
boys familiar with the routines and policies of high to share these with new boys and to act as a
contact when information is needed. Usually boys swap phone numbers and the Mentor makes contact
before school starts and then is available in the first few weeks of term to act as a support
person for the new enrolment. School Service Award Scheme points are issued in recognition of the
efforts made by effective Mentors. If you would like to help, please contact your Year 8 Adviser
– Ms Eggleton, Mr Fuller or Ms Mack.

MIC of Cricket Report
This term we see many of our teams go on fantastic cricket tours. Our top year 9 cricketers will
be participating in the annual Barberis Cup that is played against Melbourne High School. This
year our boys will be travelling to Melbourne from 16th – 19th November. The U15s and U14s
cricketers participate in the annual East Coast Cup against Brisbane High School and they will be
travelling up to Brisbane from 23rd – 26th November. Then our main tour that the 1st XI
compete in is the highly competitive 5 Highs Tour. This year Brisbane is hosting the carnival and
our boys will be travelling from the 30th November – 5th December.
In the July holidays 2015 we are aiming to participate in a once in a life time opportunity to
play in a cricket tournament hosted in Sri Lanka. We will be representing our school and
Australia in the “World Premier Schools Cricket Challenge” Tournament. This is open
to anyone in the current U15s-Opens cricket team. If you are interested in attending please
notify me by email.

- Make sure they drink plenty of water and carry a drink bottle with them to training and
fixtures.

This was an exciting week for Sydney High Basketball. Sydney Kings players Kendrick Perry
and Tom Garlepp came on Thursday to help coach the 14’s and 15’s. Kendrick is a
recent import from Florida.
For team results this week; 1sts and 2nd both won their games with an unlucky loss in the 16
C’s. It’s good to see that we are maintaining a high win percentage with a slight
drop this week to 65% vs Newington. We should not see this as a bad thing however as it
means we can improve.
A reminder that on the 23rd is a meeting for the USA Basketball tour at 7PM upstairs in the gym
(901). All are welcome to attend. Good luck to all teams next week against The Kings
School and go HIGH!

FITNESS ASSESSMENT September 2014
The final fitness assessment of our Year 7 – 10 students was carried out during September.
In 2014 personal goal times were again set to encourage each student to improve and maintain a
higher level of aerobic fitness. It was very pleasing to see 229 students (29%) achieve their

Special mention: Adam McCaffery and Nafis Rahman in Year 10 have achieved their personal goals in
four consecutive years, a great effort from Year 7 to 10.
The goal challenge will continue in 2015. Goal times for 2015 will be posted in Room 901 during
Term 4. I look forward to more students taking up the 1.6k challenge and achieving their personal

An assessment of 90% or better required a student to run the 1.6km in a time of 6 mins 30 secs.
50% or better, required a time of between 7 and 8 minutes. 10% or less means the 1.6km run was
completed in a time greater than 9 mins 30 seconds.
